Can we agree that it's time...
..to rebuild this team. No more changing out the role players, or waiting for chemistry to develop. We need to rebuild. Aldridge and Batum are the only players we need to retain and build around. But I propose that they need to be the #2 and #3 option on a championship team, therefore we need to do whatever it takes to acquire a superstar option. We do this by either trading our expiring contracts, or letting them expire and signing someone with cap space.
As for what position the superstar plays, that's up for debate. Obviously PG is preferable, but good luck with that. Deron Williams would be an okay choice, but appears to have zero interest in playing here. You'll never get Rose or Paul, Steve Nash is at best a 1-2 year solution, Wall and Lin are off limits and haven't shown they can play on the superstar level. Maybe Rondo? Although he seems like more of a 2nd tier player as well.
Superstar centers are a fantasy we have toyed with for decades now. I'm convinced that we are cursed and shouldn't even consider putting our eggs in that basket ever again. Power Forward is covered by LMA. A superstar SG/SF may be the only option, but I can't see any that we have a legit shot at. Any suggestions?

yeah
except you would have to trade one those two to get a superstar.
no, not yet
I say do some trades before the deadline that don’t effect us long term. Try to get a big and a PG without giving away the future – look to other teams that will be wanting to rebuild and see if we can come out with a solid team, reintroduce ODEN, get into the playoffs and see what happens…Then make the moves necessary in the offseason.
I wouldn't mind seeing the young guys play if this is the product
we’re going to see every night, but there are no real fix it players out there. if we rebuild it likely will be a lengthy process. You ready for that?
If this team is gonna blow it up....
I still think it can salvage its season by getting a pg, but one pg only. Yes… Nash. If the blazers are gonna blow it up. Might as well try and nab Nash and try to make a last ditch push. At least this way we have a chance to compete and at the same time have the luxury come summer to “rebuild”.
Plus how do you think LMA would feel if you came up to him and said…
“hey LMA, look we arnt going to make the playoffs. We are gonna blow it up and start over. Don’t worry about winning, we want that high draft pick, and sorry buddy…. Don’t worry about winning a ring in the next 3 years. By then your 30. It’s OK, maybe when your 30 and at the end of your prime we can finally compete.”
Yah think about it… I’d see him saying F this, I’m out.

This is NOT rebuilding.
There are only two types of teams in the NBA: contenders and non-contenders. “Re-building” is what happens when a team goes from contender to non-contender. Currently, this team is a non-contender and the question is if it can become a contender. By keeping LA and Batum all you are doing is changing out the role players – exactly what you said we need to stop doing. If the Blazers are going to ACTUALLY rebuild, that process cannot include LA.
Gerald Wallace is not a role player
..Neither is Felton or Wes. You’re talking about “blowing up” the team. I’m talking about tearing it down to the foundational players and bringing in a SUPERSTAR to rebuild around. The only players I view as essential to moving forward are LMA and Batum.
Don’t try and play semantics games without reading the context of my comments.
It's time to re-rebuild.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
If you want to play semantics games, “stripping the team down to the foundational players” is the same thing as “changing out the role players”. Wallace is what, the Blazers third or fourth option on any given possession? That’s the definition of a role player. Just because he makes $11 mil does not make him something more. My point is that LA, by your own admission, is someone you can build around. Everyone else is just a rotation/role player. Whatever term you use, it’s the same thing. So let’s look at the possibility of acquiring a superstar.
Here are two trades that would net us Dwight Howard (we would probably add Kurt Thomas after March 1 to make the salaries a little more even, and you can also swap Crawford for Matthews) or Deron Williams. I say “or”, because Batum is the key player in both trades (also, Deron Williams only really becomes a possibility if Howard is traded somewhere other than NJ). My question is, would you do either of those trades? I say yes in a heartbeat. So would the Blazers, IF Howard or Williams would agree to sign an extension to stay in Portland. The problem is, neither player wants to be here. Nor do other superstars. You know the problems: small market, bad weather, high income taxes. They don’t care we have a top-5 home court in the NBA. They aren’t going to sign here as FA, and no one else is available via trade.
So you either have to accept that the Blazers can win a championship with LA as their best player, or if you think they can’t then we have to commit to a re-build which means blowing it up. You have to trade everyone to acquire high lottery picks and blue-chippers. Anything in the middle is just changing out the role players, not “rebuilding”.
Nope.
The FO went into this season (note: probably only made the decision after Brandon retired) signing a mediocre team of backups to short term contracts, allowing them future financial flexibility. Blowing up this team of short term contracts now in desperation would be a pretty unwise fiscal decision.
Competitive decision is TBD, depending on who the FO can convince to sign here next year.
