Nate needs to go!
I have wanted Nate out of here for at least 4 years. He is a talent killer. He destroys the fun and creativity that players have with his strict dogmatic coaching. The players are like robots. Notice how we always trade away the creative minds. Andre Miller, Rudy Fernandez, Sergio rodriguez. All flourishing again by the way. Fernandez luckily got the hell out of here before it was too late. Rodriguez was destroyed mentally by Nate. (playing well in europe again). I remember a video on comcast where McMillan explained how he teaches his guards how to time the dribble to pass to a player coming around a pick. Are you kidding me? wow! I know Nate needed this kind of training because he was a robotic player who played hard, but had no creativity whatsoever. He is probably one of the most overrated guards in history. His stats are 5.9 points, 6.1 assists and 1.9 steals. Wow, that is great!. 6.1 assists falls into the realm of what I like to call "assists of attrition." These are the number of assists you would get by handling the ball all game. Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, Rubio. They get their assists by making great passes that lead directly to a basket using creativity, court awareness and timing.
Nate did none of those and doesn't understand it, so he dumbs down his team to match what he understands. "we ran our sets" he always says. Remember that game on the Road where Batum went nutts, but didn't see the ball in the last 10 minutes of the game? The players and coach said they just weren't used to seeing him? What? is that how basketball works? If I was playing I would have looked for him. You have to ride what is working over and over again. Look and Jeremy Lin for example. He is hot and keeps getting his shots and making great plays. They keep going to him. But you have to admit, he wouldn't even sniff the court on our team. McMillan hates developing young talent. Yes they get to play in the D league from time to time. I am sick of this BS. It is time for him to step down.

We traded;
Sergio because he was terrible.
Rudy because he was for too inconsistent and a whiner. (terrible)
Dre because he couldn’t hit an outside shot to save his life (terrible from 3), so the defense always sagged off him and just packed the middle, forcing us to hit 3s (which we can’t do).
We traded those players away because they weren’t what the team needed, not because “Nate killed their talent”
I’m fully on the Fire Nate train, but there are plenty of actual reasons to do so. Saying he kills players talent is a stretch. Under- or mis-utilizes sure, but doesn’t kill their talent.

Except for the part where you mention firing Nate. I don't think it's his fault that the team struggles. I think management has been piss-poor of late.

We still have management? o.O
I do think it’s time for a new coach, but that has more to do with the complete lack of offensive development over the last few years.

sending the Rhino to the bench is inexcusable!
FIRE NATE!

seriously
how long have we been needing a backup PF that bangs, rebounds, and has a low post game. We finally get one and what happens? he sits on the bench and a shoot first miss second crazy, no conscious SG/PG from Seattle gets to roam free with no restrictions. FIRE NATE!

umm.. this dude has done incredible consider the players he's been dealt and injuries he's had to deal with over the years.
I personally think Wallace and Batum said it best per Ben’s recap last night:
But both Wallace and Batum said clearly that the poor play was on the team, not McMillan.
“I don’t think this has anything to do with the coach,” Wallace said. "This is all the players. The coaching staff, they do a great job of drawing up the execution that they want us to do out on the court, it just comes down to us executing.
“The coaches can’t get out there, they can’t get the rebounds for us. They can’t pinpoint the passes where they have to go. Those are some of the main things killing us. Turnovers in bad situations and at the wrong time, and rebounds. We play pretty good for 23 seconds and we give up a big rebound, second chance, that has nothing to do with the coaches.”

swapping coaches out right now doesn't change our roster at all. Jamal, Felton, and Wes still remain terrible.
You’re placing all responsibility on the coach, none on the players. Look at how well Nate had the team humming at the beginning.

You need to go!
Stop with all this fire Nate stuff. This teams problems have nothing to do with him. Did he twist LA ankles? DId he make Felton fat? Is he forcing Crawford to make bad passes at critical times? Is he the one missing open three after open three? Is he the one that cant finish a three on one break that any team filled with 7 year olds could do? Is he the one missing countless buckets right at the rim? Our problems are because of our PLAYERS PLAY, not our coach. And if you really think that by playing the rhino, elliot williams and nolan smith more is gonna solve our problems then you need to get a reality check. There is a reason they dont play alot!
Nate’s doing the best he can with the players he got, if your gonna blame anyone blame our teams front office. Nate can only cook with what he’s given, if he’s given crap then whatever he cooks is gonna taste like crap no matter what he does.
exactly.. see my post above. even the players realize that ;)

maybe it's time
I think Nate is good for some fundamentals, but is lacking in the area of in-game adjustments and strategy/tactics. He know some pieces, but can’t put them all together consistently. Player rotations are stiff and predictable. Adverse to taking some risks. He is better for young teams that are terrible and makes them respectable. I don’t think he has what it takes to get a team over the top.

I actually think a coaching change may give this team a spark
in the short term, but wouldn’t do anything to fix what really ails us; terrible guard play!

Nope because at the end of the day you still have 4/5 guys not willing to accept there roles or responsibility for there play .

I still dont understand some of the roles these players are supposed to have
whats the role of Nic, Jamal, or the bench?
The tensions are so high because the stakes are so low!
Wait till the end of season, Bro
You don’t switch horses mid-stream. Even if that horse stumbles a lot.
Completely agree
I should have qualified that I would not argue replacing Nate at the end of the season. Definitely not mid season. I like Nate and think he is a good coach, but not a great coach. He gets more criticism than he deserves, but not all of it is unjustified.
The first order of business at that level is getting a general manager as others have said. That process needs to happen now.

Huh?
This team lacks TALENT! We have become the Charlotte Bobcats, and that is somehow Nate’s fault? We don’t have a freaking GM, for chrissake!!!
The only valid argument I can see for canning him (since no better option is out there) would be to tank the season and move up in the draft.

We have talent
We have proven we can win games, we are just inconsistent and playing under our talent level… If we got a little confidence we could be winning games
The tensions are so high because the stakes are so low!
Seriously? We have a lot more talent than the Bobcats and most of the league.
Is our talent at the elite or contender level? No. Is it top 10 in the NBA and at second round exit level? Yes. We have multiple players better than anything Charlotte has, give me a break. LA has played like a top 10 player so far this year, #2 PER for power forwards. Batum has the #7 PER for small forwards, yet he doesn’t get the minutes deserved with that, which would be the coach’s fault. Gerald Wallace, while inconsistent, is a solid starter on any team and a past all-star. Camby is one of the best defenders at his position in the league. Crawford was the 6th man of the year a couple years ago, but has been forced to play out of position. Felton, of course, has been horrible and is responsible for many of our problems. But to say we lack the talent to be any better than we’ve shown is a joke. Our length and talent should make us a very scary team, which is why we can play so well at times and look like the better team when we play the elites, like OKC. We have underachieved this year, no question. Blame the players or blame Nate, but don’t blame talent.
Dre ain't got no love for these pros
Hmm.
I don’t think it’s worth arguing, since you feel so strongly, but I think you overvalue our guys. LMA is out only consistent producer right now. Most teams have more than one guy you can count on for consistent production. Of course every team has talent, be it plenty or sparse. Ours is sparse and most of the second tier guys, talent-wise, are aging rapidly.

The Lin jab really doesn't make any sense.
Lin only got his opening after being dumped by several teams and coaches, and wouldn’t have even made it with the Knicks had they not had so many injuries and inconsistencies themselves. You’re basically arguing that if Felton, Crawford, Smith, Williams, LaMarcus, and Wallace all got injured, Nate still wouldn’t start Lin if he was on the team. Of all the criticisms of Nate, the “he doesn’t start young and unproven talent” one really seems like the least of them.
generally agree
…but if your starters are consistently playing horribly, far below what is expected of them, far below what they have shown they can do, maybe the unprovens should get some burn.
That wasn’t one of my criticisms of Nate, but at some point a change may need to need made when the play is horrible and the team is losing.

beeeeep...wrong!
Nate doesn’t play young talent at all. He blows as a coach. just admit it.
Batum first to the bench last night
is why I say fire Nate. He consistently benches his hot hand first. I have watched it for years now. It happened last night. Nic had 11 of 24 points, it was a back and forth game. Nic hits the bench FIRST and the Wizards go up and stay up the rest of the game, Nic’s touches go way down when he gets back in and the game is over.

Assuming this isn't a sarcastic post.....
Miller and Rudy aren’t playing any better, at least statistically, in Denver than they were under Nate.

yes but sergio is "flourishing"
as a back-up point guard in europe. clearly he was nba star material.

Lin only got playing time
when the knicks were devastated by injuries. every coach would stick with him given the tear he’s on but there was a lot of luck that went into getting the opportunity.
Just admit you guys!
Nate McMillan is a talent killing crappy coach who has no idea how to play the game. I know a lot of you fools love him, but you probably suck at hoops yourself. Trust knowledgeable people.

So who takes his place?
Lots of “fire Nate” here, but nary a suggestion on who would be a preferable alternative?
I certainly have issues with Nate’s coaching, but do consider him an “above-average” NBA coach. I don’t think he’ll ever lead a title team. I’m all for replacing him with someone better, but is that coach available?
short list (likely unattainable)
Phil Jackson
Jerry Sloan
other than that, who ’ya got?
by selurnedo on Feb 15, 2012 8:58 PM PST reply actions 2 recs
Agree
I agree. There isn’t a good alternative to Nate. Even with Sloan, you’d need a better PG than Felton if you want to see successful pick n’ rolls.
Nate isn’t as bad as we all make him out to be. I feel he brings way more good than bad.
However, I’ll disagree that he’ll never lead a title team. If the Blazers let him go, he’ll end up in Miami for sure. During the Olympics, the Heat’s Big Three will vouch for him, especially if he is fired.
by FreewheelinDylan on Feb 15, 2012 9:50 PM PST up reply actions
If the Heat canned Erik Spoelstra, Pat Riley would promote an assistant coach (e.g., David Fizdale), ...
hire someone with whom he has a past relationship (e.g., JVG), or return to the sidelines himself before hiring an outsider like Nate McMillan. Riley, without a doubt, possesses a long history of promoting from within, as well as has an apparent aversion to outside hires.
"other than that, who ’ya got?"
Do the research yourself, O.K.?
Good, because I’ve tossed out countless names already and am tired of doing it.
nate has his flaws
but he is a great coach and has done an amazing job with the situations hes had to deal with. We could all say he needs to play young talent more or whatever but we aren’t at the practices. Other people above have explained very nicely that Nate is not the problem. The bottom line is you can’t win basketball games at any level when you continuously give up offensive rebounds and make bad turnovers. At the nba level the players should be held responsible for those deficiencies.
