Gameday Open Thread: Wizards vs. Blazers
Blazers status:
Early in the first quarter, LaMarcus Aldridge rolled his ankle when landing on the foot of a Wizards player, and left the game with an ankle sprain. He won't return, and Ben has any further updates. After his departure, the shell-shocked Blazers fell apart against the Wiz, leaving them wide open for dunks and three's, falling behind by 12 at the half in front of a stunned Rose Garden.
Fan status:

Hang out here and watch the second half, if you dare. -- Tim
PS -- Before you ask, no you can't post more pictures. :)

If we loose this one, then tommorow is defenitly a loss.
looks like lottery time for this team
Yep.
Thats why I say we trade for prospects and throw them in the fire to see if they can play. Its a good season for that, best case we find some gems. Worst case we get a better chance at Andre Drummond. Bomb like the Spurs got Duncan? :) BRIGHT SIDE FTW !
"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
Does this affect the mood for Valentine's dates at the RG?
Like there won’t be much scoring for the rest of the night?
Well, what would you expect other then panic
when your best player goes down after we lost our other two franchise building blocks to injury?
On the bright side, Batum will have a chance he is more then a role player. Hoping to see Nolan Smith & Elliot Williams soon.
"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
Faried 13 pts, 7 reb
In 21 MIN tonight. Guy is going to be a player, and we passed on him to trade Miller for felton and draft Smith. What an epic fail
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
I honestly wonder how good we would be with Andre + Faried
:O
"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
We need Faried kind of rebounding presence
In the worst of ways
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
I know, major bummer.
For what its worth, Mike Moser in the upcoming draft has a similar if not more versatile skill set(can play & defend the 3 spot too).
"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
also, for what its worth
we need Andre’s Point-Guardery™ just as much with Smellton.
"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
we could also use a big to defend the paint against penetration
something faried will never be able to do
dinasour type of guys choir boys
Faried's got wingspan
Hes averageing 1.1 blocks in 11:48 MIN this year
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
cjohnson gets blocks too.
doesn’t mean he can actually play defense.
dinasour type of guys choir boys
Faried can play defense
His best asset is defense and rebounding. Question is really whether he can average double digit points if given starters minutes, but he’ll get double digit reb
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
his best asset is rebounding.
he couldn’t defend in college and that was the biggest knock against him.
including his inability to score on anything other than a putback.
dinasour type of guys choir boys
I find it hard to believe
The best rebounding player in college basketball was a poor defender. By definition, getting extra possessions for your team means playing good D. He’s obviously agile and quick enough seeing he wasnt rebounding with brute strength or height. I think he’ll be a good on the ball defender. We’ll see.
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
When Faried does find himself in a pseudo-isolation situation in the post defensively, he struggles to hold position as the video above indicates. Clearly lacking some bulk, particularly in the lower body, he’ll need to continue adding weight to his frame so he can deal with rigors of the NBA. Though he’ll deflect an entry pass and come up with a steal from time to time at the college, he’ll get sealed out of the play entirely almost as often, and will make some questionable reads defending off the ball.

If he was tought by Kurt Thomas from day 1
and went through with the adding of the bulk, I bet he would be able to defend just fine against backup PF’s.
"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
Fair enough
Just saying he’s athletic, long, and quick enough to be an above average defender – with the great reb ability too. He needs to add bulk no doubt, and that report is accurate for sure
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
fine.

They have to loosen up.
If there were ever a time to play like they did the first couple games, today would be it.
ok, so seriously...
even with aldridge down, the rhino doesn’t get off the bench? did i miss something? did he try to pickup Nate’s wife? what the hell is going on? he’s good!!!

he's a bit predictable
teams pretty much know exactly what he’s going to do now. Still weird that he isn’t getting some minutes. I agree with that.
Yeah, I don't really understand it.
Maybe we’ll see him in the second half. Some interior scoring would be nice.
ok I just laughed really loud at that one!!! I was wondering the same thing.

Long
Term its a blessing if we keep losing.. This organization cannot afford a 1 and done. we need to eat this year. Gets some value out of Felton, Wallace and camby. Then pick high next year and build around Aldridge, batum and hopefully a talent we got for the three and our new high draft pic. 1 and done puts us into no mans land again next year.
You couldn't trade Felton
For a pair of stinky basketball sneakers at this point. Camby isnt worth anything either
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
miami would gag to have camby.
if it netted us one of their young guards, i’m in.
by blazersunited on Feb 14, 2012 8:19 PM PST up reply actions
camby has been amazing this season
as long as a team doesn’t need their center to score, he’s been rebounding like a maniac
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
Did you notice no one disagreed about Felton having the trade value of a stinky pair of
basketball sneakers?!!!!
He's old and breaking down
He still rebounds well, but the end is nigh
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
his contract is expiring
so even if the end is nigh, i probably won’t hit this year.
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
Do not
Under estimate cap room. You could help a big market team free up 20 million with expiring contracts. That is huge for big market teams to sign big names that we can’t.
that's true
But you wont get much young talent back. Maybe a first rounder
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
completely agree. If I was a player who was going to remain, I'd wouldn't kill myself in these
btobtob games etc. Would just have as much fun as possible and take it as it comes.
I have been without access to blazers related news for like 5 hours.
So uhhhh what is going on here?
Is it to early to ask what players will be in the lottery next year.
We went like this, he went like that. I say to Hollywood: Where'd he go? Hollywood says: where'd who go?
I am sure this has been discussed on Blazersedge already (I'm not sure though)
but I think Lin is Brandon Roy reincarnated. Very similar games, and Lin’s crossover step back jumper very much reminds me of Roy’s (and his drives to the hoop and methodical play).

His BB IQ is extremely high, and he has very good court vision and balance. Great body control. His TO’s will come down. Nailed GW shot with 0.5 sec. Saw the game too, and Im CONVINCED this guy is a player

Nate
Game plan is failing. This was his team. He pushed to get rid of miller and wanted Crawford. Passing on Faried was a huge loss. This team would be so much better with miller and Faried right now. Really a shame. Nate is not good at talent evaluation.
I'll go to my grave believing
We passed on Faried as a part of that Felton deal. That’s what makes this so much worse than just having Felton.

Didnt want miller. Nate had issues with him from day one. Pushed to get him out. He is to blame for this bad move. Buchanan will get the blame, but it’s all sarge.
Nate was probably just jealous

could have draft Faried and a point
IF we didnt do the trade with Denver we would have got another first round pick for trading Rudy and Petteri, and could have draft another point. We definitely fail. Fail-ton..
if it helps you enjoy watching the game to think about what sort of control nate has on this team makeup, go ahead.
PA has never listened to much input on the draft or trades from his GMs, why is he suddenly going to listen Nate this past year?

is that another message board post from someone who made it up
because he wants to believe it ? Just wondering on the source.
nate wanted miller to start from the beginning.
roy didn’t. nate took the smart route and put the pressure on himself to deflect criticism from roy.
eventually he brought roy around to what was best for the team.
dinasour type of guys choir boys
I'd argue that was an error from Nate, but I have to admit I'm not up for that discussion tonight
Not when we’re getting blown out by the Wiz at home.
Like I said, I disagree with you guys, but honestly meh tonight, plus I'm working on the recap.
I think this isn’t “you either do what Brandon wants or you’re in trouble”… there is more than two options.
tough for Nate
coach isn’t as important as star in the NBA. Sometimes you got to play the politician.
accepting that, I would fault Nate for not standing up to Roy
way more, way sooner.
Anyway, I was appalled at the draft last year.
Andre was integrated into the team, and was working well with the team.
A PG change is a big deal, considering his central, controlling role.
Andre was good for at least another year, unless a really compelling star PG was available. We saw Andre step up often to save games, now, no such saves.
And, yeah, Faried looked interesting, a fun addition – a lot more fun than Smith, who we could have probably picked later anyway. Camby rebounds are great, but we need backup for that role.
As far as PA goes, I don’t know if he listens to counsel, though I like to think so. If not, then the history of bad decisions is on him. I tend to expect Nate has influence on decisions.
In any event, WHOEVER is making destructive decisions is really frustrating.
so LMA goes down, rhino plays 0 minutes?

Yeah I can pick on Nate with the best of them
But Nic’s only making himself look bad by picking up his game when he gets a start. If he did this every night, there would be no question of the starter, he’d surpass Gerald quickly.
I believe he started a couple of times this year when Camby was out didn't he?
#52--------I believe in Greg Oden
Very possible.
I lose track of random starting nights. But yeah, overall, Nic has shown he can float around the court on any given night, starting or otherwise.
Also worth noting, so has Crash.
maybe nate gets bored with batum standing in no-mans land on defense.
shot goes up, batum neither boxes out, or leaks.
he just stands still if he feels like it’s no in his zone.
wallace refuses to guard anyone without he ball.
he waits until his man has the ball to try.
kurt can physically only guard the ball in the post, he can’t rise up or move quick enough laterally for help d.

Elliot Williams appears to have much more talent that Nolan Smith. Give him the minutes
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
I wonder if he lost explosiveness
After that knee injury kept him out all last season
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
it was precautionary surgery to improve patella tracking.
shouldn’t effect him in the least.
dinasour type of guys choir boys
It's weird, what does the coach see in practice that doesn't gell with what casual fans see in actual games.
Seems like guys like Batum and Williams are getting passed over by inferior talent.
Yeah, I can't wake up from it either...

Would
Have been nice if the kid had had some more playing time earlier in the year. Going to be rusty.
yeah if you mean the team collapses the most without him
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
This feels like the beginning of the end for this team...
…other then not being able to shoot, defend or rebound we’re really not that bad!

LOL Jamal got owned. Just secure the ball

WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE
Wow
Crazy how many layups and dunks Washington is getting. We’re really hurting on the interior defense without LMA.
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
Has anyone mentioned that maybe this injury happened because Nate has been too stubborn to change rotations and play rookies?

going to rec you now
just because you’re trying to bring logic and common sense to a barren world
I don't get it.
LMA got a foot under his landing from the other team. How does starting rookies help that?
yeah that was a rookie making a stupid mistake on defense
or a dirty play
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
But if I was commissioner, I'd automatically suspend any player who does it.
Accidental or not.

yeah. even it was a stupid mistake there have to be penalties
to prevent players from pulling that.

It force him to play other options.
He has to change his line up and find players that can put points on the board.
The injury isn’t his fault but in some ways I see it as ironic or some form of karma.
Being a Blazer fan is not exactly healthy.

he just explained, it's ironic.
c’mon, that wraps it up. game set match.
dinasour type of guys choir boys
it's not.
just seems that it is easier to get injured when fatigued..I didn’t see the play. Would it have happened if LMA was quicker or ….????
LMA had no control on it
He went for a fadeaway, and the doofus Wiz player leaned in too far and stuck his foot right into LMA’s landing spot.
rookie had his foot where LMA need to land
from the fade. No real way to avoid it unless someone shoots the rookie before it happens
He's saying that because Nate refused
To utilize his full complement of bench players, the injury occurred (via karma) and now Nate is forced to dig into the bench.

I didn't word that very well.
What I mean is this situation now forces nate to find other options. Not so much for the PF position but more so in the scoring, ie Batum. Allowing him to be more of an offensive option now.
Being a Blazer fan is not exactly healthy.

We are nearly talentless.
I’m the last guys to say something like this but I’d rather watch a buncha rookies with those two guys then this collection of misfits.
We got nothing… FOR THE FREAKIN WIZARDS!!!
#7... GO BLAZERS!!!
This
Is good whatever it takes to make a smart move at the trade deadline. 1 and done with this bunch is not in the best interest of this team. Play for next year.
Do you think nick young is available?
by ZenGarden on Feb 14, 2012 9:06 PM PST via Android app up reply actions
Yes
He most certainly is . . . he took his Qualifying Offer for 3.7M which means he is a virtual lock to leave D.C. after the season. Wizards would love to unload him now before he becomes a RFA.
I remember Ben ripping into him a year ago for being really really stupid.
OSU '06
GForce Crash Wallace FTW!
he can shoot
and do it pretty well . . . but not much else. His one-on-one isn’t all that bad though. Hes improved under Flip and now Randy.
Well Wes clearly can't shoot

just unreal

Yeah it's time to blow it up...
Trade everybody not named LaMarcus and Batum for draft picks and crappy contracts to suck it up for a couple years, acquire a dynamic guard and a defensive/rebounding C, be reloaded and back in the playoffs before LaMarcus’ contract is up…
The smarter you are, the more likely you are to be tripping balls at any given moment.
/keep Batum/ /trade for Bogut/
Is it too late to go back to the future 2 weeks
And grab Lin off the scrap heap?

I knew this was a transition year, but to me that means all the more reason to develop young guys, and/or at least see what they got.
Trade Wallace and Crawford for whatever you can get, play the young guys around the LMA/Batum/Matthews foundation, and look to regroup this summer with picks and capspace

the one thing this team doesn't have
that our undermanned squads in the past few years have had in spades – heart.

yeah they play defense like zombies
miss rotations, stand around when the shot goes up, won’t cut aggressively. With Aldridge out the picture is sadly very clear.
We’re a fringe playoff team with LMA but muuuuch worse without him.
Not
That he would get playing time, but we could have used farieds 9 rebounds a 15 points tonight maning the middle.

by ZenGarden on Feb 14, 2012 9:25 PM PST via Android app up reply actions
Their Crawford averages 11 points on 36% shooting. Ours averages 15 on 39% shooting.
Jordan’s game tonight is an aberration.
The sad thing is that even without LMA
Batum/Wallace played very well, and Mathews/Camby played well. Felton and crawford killed us again. Felton went 2-5, 4 PTS, 6 AST, 1 REB, 2 TO is 27+MIN and Crawford went 1-5 in 21+MIN against a horrible Washington team. Interior defense sucked too as per usual

Yes LMA's defense goes underrated by the national media.
Which is why some say that he’s the best PF playing today, because he plays on all ends of the court, unlike the other contenders for best PF Kevin Love and Blake Griffin…
The smarter you are, the more likely you are to be tripping balls at any given moment.

Where do you go from here? First of back to back to back. Seems like they are all content to continue jacking up jumpers and not play defense or rebound. Don’t see this changing with this personnel.

But how embarrassing for these guys. Not going to get those contract extensions, or so it seems.
