Gameday Open Thread: Wizards vs. Blazers

Blazers status:

Early in the first quarter, LaMarcus Aldridge rolled his ankle when landing on the foot of a Wizards player, and left the game with an ankle sprain. He won't return, and Ben has any further updates. After his departure, the shell-shocked Blazers fell apart against the Wiz, leaving them wide open for dunks and three's, falling behind by 12 at the half in front of a stunned Rose Garden.

Fan status:

Hang out here and watch the second half, if you dare. -- Tim

Yep.

Thats why I say we trade for prospects and throw them in the fire to see if they can play. Its a good season for that, best case we find some gems. Worst case we get a better chance at Andre Drummond. Bomb like the Spurs got Duncan? :) BRIGHT SIDE FTW !

Well, what would you expect other then panic

when your best player goes down after we lost our other two franchise building blocks to injury?

On the bright side, Batum will have a chance he is more then a role player. Hoping to see Nolan Smith & Elliot Williams soon.

Faried 13 pts, 7 reb

In 21 MIN tonight. Guy is going to be a player, and we passed on him to trade Miller for felton and draft Smith. What an epic fail

We need Faried kind of rebounding presence

I know, major bummer.

For what its worth, Mike Moser in the upcoming draft has a similar if not more versatile skill set(can play & defend the 3 spot too).

Faried can play defense

His best asset is defense and rebounding. Question is really whether he can average double digit points if given starters minutes, but he’ll get double digit reb

his best asset is rebounding.

he couldn’t defend in college and that was the biggest knock against him.
including his inability to score on anything other than a putback.

I find it hard to believe

The best rebounding player in college basketball was a poor defender. By definition, getting extra possessions for your team means playing good D. He’s obviously agile and quick enough seeing he wasnt rebounding with brute strength or height. I think he’ll be a good on the ball defender. We’ll see.

by zeusmith on Feb 14, 2012 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

When Faried does find himself in a pseudo-isolation situation in the post defensively, he struggles to hold position as the video above indicates. Clearly lacking some bulk, particularly in the lower body, he’ll need to continue adding weight to his frame so he can deal with rigors of the NBA. Though he’ll deflect an entry pass and come up with a steal from time to time at the college, he’ll get sealed out of the play entirely almost as often, and will make some questionable reads defending off the ball.

If he was tought by Kurt Thomas from day 1

and went through with the adding of the bulk, I bet he would be able to defend just fine against backup PF’s.

Fair enough

Just saying he’s athletic, long, and quick enough to be an above average defender – with the great reb ability too. He needs to add bulk no doubt, and that report is accurate for sure

Term its a blessing if we keep losing.. This organization cannot afford a 1 and done. we need to eat this year. Gets some value out of Felton, Wallace and camby. Then pick high next year and build around Aldridge, batum and hopefully a talent we got for the three and our new high draft pic. 1 and done puts us into no mans land again next year.

I am sure this has been discussed on Blazersedge already (I'm not sure though)

tough for Nate

coach isn’t as important as star in the NBA. Sometimes you got to play the politician.

by poorwebguy on Feb 14, 2012 9:19 PM PST up reply actions

accepting that, I would fault Nate for not standing up to Roy

way more, way sooner.
Anyway, I was appalled at the draft last year.
Andre was integrated into the team, and was working well with the team.
A PG change is a big deal, considering his central, controlling role.
Andre was good for at least another year, unless a really compelling star PG was available. We saw Andre step up often to save games, now, no such saves.
And, yeah, Faried looked interesting, a fun addition – a lot more fun than Smith, who we could have probably picked later anyway. Camby rebounds are great, but we need backup for that role.
As far as PA goes, I don’t know if he listens to counsel, though I like to think so. If not, then the history of bad decisions is on him. I tend to expect Nate has influence on decisions.
In any event, WHOEVER is making destructive decisions is really frustrating.

maybe nate gets bored with batum standing in no-mans land on defense.

shot goes up, batum neither boxes out, or leaks.
he just stands still if he feels like it’s no in his zone.

wallace refuses to guard anyone without he ball.
he waits until his man has the ball to try.

kurt can physically only guard the ball in the post, he can’t rise up or move quick enough laterally for help d.

Give Batum a break man

He’s playing huge minutes coming from the bench. He’s hustling out there, and Nick Young has made some ridiculous shots.

He has to change his line up and find players that can put points on the board.

Trade Wallace and Crawford for whatever you can get, play the young guys around the LMA/Batum/Matthews foundation, and look to regroup this summer with picks and capspace
