Nates Contract

Bedge is in Debbie Downer mode after all these close game losses and a lot of blame seems to be falling on the players who just joined us. So this seems as good/awkward a time as any to bring Nate's Contract up.

  • What is Nate being paid? How long is Nate's Contract?
    • Answer: 2 Year through 2013 ... undisclosed pay
  • Does Nate get along with the players?
  • Does Nate have a consistent offensive/defensive system that the players can get behind?
  • What is Nate's role on Team USA (will they bring him back if the Blazers do poorly this year)?
  • And the facetious question: Does Nate get bonuses if the starters reach peak minutes per game?

Star-divide

Basically I am just very curious how people feel about Nate. I don't think its a good idea to fire him in the midst of a compact season and I would be nervous if the blazers opted to add even more instability to their front office. Also I wouldn't mind seeing some new ideas thrown into the mix, so maybe a different coach would be a good idea.

Either way if anyone wants to give a shot at any of the questions above please do!

yeah

I was largely behind a lot of the nate changes this season, but there are the tendencies he used to show still ever present from my nate bashing days.

The biggest puzzle to me is Nic Batum’s minutes. Dudes PER is 7th among small forwards and he barely sees court time compared to guys that are just stinking it up out there. Ray Ray clunked 3 shots in a row in OT with Batum on the bench, our most consistent outside shooter (that ain’t saying as much as is, but he is the best we got at the moment).

Then someone has the audacity to ask about btum’s minutes and Nate goes all ‘how dare you’ on them.

sigh

Nate is a decent, yet not great coach.

But he’s been here for 8 years and all he has to show for it is 3 1st round exits. It’s time for him to go. I appreciate the culture change that he helped bring along with Roy and Aldridge, but it’s time to get somebody new in here and see what they can do…

The smarter you are, the more likely you are to be tripping balls at any given moment.

Greg, Roy, Aldridge and Nate...

It just wasn’t our destiny. I think it’s time for a new era to begin and Nate has showed us what he brings — it’s not all that great.

he worth 7 million? Id rather than money get pushed into scouting or player development. He doesnt seem worth it.

nate is worth every penny

Nate has done an amazing job turning the jail blazers era back into the rip city era. Stop this stupid whinny oh nic doesnt get enough playing time, and sorts. Nate sees him every single day we don’t. There are reasons for what he does. He is handed injury after injury but yet he still wins games. Nics defense has been far worse this year then in the past years and he is not focusing on his defense enough. Nate is a good coach and if other teams were faced with the injury problems he was i would like to see them do the things Nate did. Nate gets so much respect around the league for a reason.

Dang - if the blazers had this much passion they would be undefeated at home!

Or maybe this is the account Nate uses to browse bedge?

i wish i was Nate

i would have millions in the bank right now but i’m not.. Nate is a great coach tho everyone needs to show some respect to the man that has single handed brought back rip city.

You can respect a coach and still criticize their work

It’s totally ok, and both sides of this debate are always welcome.

I don't think Nate is a bad guy and all.

And I don’t mean to be ‘personal’ against him.
I am just long frustrated with certain aspects of the team, which the coach MAY (well) have a role in. He has been here a long time, made millions. I think he could use a break from this aggravation to enjoy his wealth, and let someone else deal with the mess.
Best wishes, Nate

I'm not sold on the idea of firing Nate

I know that he has some deficiencies. I know that the team doesn’t have much to show for his tenure here as far as postseason success is concerned. However, there have been plenty of positives. However, I’m not convinced that we could readily get a coach that does as much with what he’s given. Furthermore, I’m of the opinion that the problems with the Blazers run much deeper than just Nate.

agreed.

Seems silly that so many people want to fire Nate pretty much because our guards are not performing. If our guards were hitting shots this wouldn’t even be a debate.

One thing that does worry me about Nate as our HC is that I felt that he was truly out-coached by Carlisle in the playoffs. And he doesn’t really develop our young talent..

i don't know

Mchale has next to nothing and he is outperforming Nate in the win loss column.

I am not about to spend my time bashing Nate, he has changed many things that used to frustrate me about him, I will give him some rope to work with at this point, a little latitude.

My only observation is some of the tendencies he has shown in the past that I always found frustrating are resurfacing. Not playing the hot hand, getting mad when a reporter asks why he is not playing the hot hand, that sort of stuff.

I am sorry, but asking coach a perfectly valid question like why isn’t the small forward that has the 7th best PER in the league for that position getting more usage/time on the court is just not something that dese4rves a defensive smart alleck reply like Nate gave about it yesterday. That sort of thing bugged me in the past, the good questions he gets mad at, the stupid questions he gladly answers with a variety of platitudes.

The reason i always liked Bobby Knight, despite some of his deficiencies is if the reporter asked a stupid question he gave a stupid answer, if they asked a good question he answered it as best he could.

you know why this is?

because his guards are playing well. Portland has more talent but their guards are not playing even close to as well as houstons. If they got any contribution from our guards this team would be so freaking good! just look at the games when our guards played well, we won games against good teams!

by jpark on Feb 14, 2012 4:54 PM PST up reply actions

What's our poor guard play have to do with Nate not maximizing the talent he has?

We’re not a title contender, but have a lot more talent and potential than our record shows. Whose fault is that? Yes, blame can go multiple ways, but I don’t see how Nate doesn’t deserve any of the blame. He’s been given the benefit of the doubt many times in the past, but needs to be held accountable now. He’s not a horrible coach, but he’s far from a great coach too and has some big flaws.

Unless we could land Lionel Hollins or a top tier assistant like Mike Budenholzer

I think you are taking a risk of going down in terms of coach talent. Though Paul Allen’s Seahawks have looked good under Pete Carroll, so don’t put it past him to look to the college ranks. Just go way out of the realm of making sense & hire Ben Jacobson from Northern Iowa, I wanted him to coach U of O before Altman was hired.

The

Guards he hand picked. Nate wanted miller gone. Done. He wanted Crawford, done. He loves Matthews and won’t bench him. This is Nates team, Nates problem. I’ll say it, think of this team with miller and Faried, compared to what we have now. That is on Nate. This is probably why he’s being testy.

by Cabbol on Feb 14, 2012 5:15 PM PST reply actions

You know, eventually the Blazers are going to win a few...

and then everyone will be saying that Nate is just fine. The problem is, I don’t think that will be true. Nate is a mediocre coach. He’s got enough talent to hide that some of the time. However, HE doesn’t have enough talent to help the team reach it’s potential on a regular basis.

by kuhnsmith on Feb 14, 2012 5:41 PM PST up reply actions

"He doesn’t have enough talent to help the team reach it’s potential"?

Potential is based on talent so if you aren’t reaching your potential, it’s not because of a lack of talent.

Actually there are tons of coaching options in the NBA

Personally I see the “who will replace him” question a bit of a red herring. As long as you have a competent front office, you can find a very good NBA coach. And when you sometimes just need a new voice, that’s more than enough.

That being said, I suspect you’ve already pinpointed the bigger concern in the above paragraph, so I doubt I need to highlight it.

by Timmay! on Feb 14, 2012 6:21 PM PST up reply actions

Well, I think whether we keep Nate depends on where we want to go as a team.

If we blow it up and rebuild, I think he is worth keeping. He has a solid track record of growing young, inexperienced teams.

But if we are in win-now mode, he has to go. I just don’t think Nate has demonstrated the chops to make adjustments on a highly competitive level or to run a high-performing team at optimum capacity.

No reason to fire him

it would just be a waste of money paying off his contract. Let him coach to the end of his contract and then decide. The Blazers aren’t going anywhere this year and will have to make some kind of a big change to the team for next year but probably won’t be a contender by that time either. Just look to improve the team now and worry about the coach after next year.

by XBlazerfan on Feb 15, 2012 8:51 AM PST reply actions

Yes

But we wont develop any young players. Next year we still wont know what we have in Nolan and Elliot. Other teams, even winning teams are getting quality minutes from late picks. Nate is stagnating growth. What if he moves Batum back to the bench as well? We cant afford Nate from a development stand point.

by Cabbol on Feb 15, 2012 9:21 AM PST up reply actions

You have a good point

However he did play two players right out of the gate namely Wes and Nic. He was basically forced to play them he had no choice. That is what I envision with a revamped team. All of Felton/Wallace/Camby/Crawford will probably be gone. They will have some new draft pick or more and at least one FA. Anyway it will look a lot different and I suspect he’ll have to play Nolan and Elliot more and more. I don’t see this team being blown up by Allen & Co., but this summer is set up for change by default.
