Gameday Open Thread: Wizards vs. Blazers
UPDATE: LaMarcus Aldridge landed on the foot of a Wizards player and badly rolled his ankle in the opening moments of tonight's game. He has a left ankle sprain, and will not return. See Ben's post below for live updates (I'll update the GDT too).
Note: Nicolas Batum is replacing Wesley Matthews in the starting lineup tonight, according to Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com and Blazers Radio's Brian Wheeler.
It's the start of a back-to-back-to-back, all nationally televised. Tonight, the Washington Wizards visit the Rose City to play the Portland Trail Blazers (7:10 tip-off). You know how this works by now, it'll either be a blow-out, or come down to the wire. After a contentious practice, will the Blazers come out inspired tonight?
Injury Report: Marcus Camby has a bruised ankle but is expected to play.
Read: Dave's Preview | Blazers Media Notes | Facebook | Ben's onsite updates on Twitter

Just heard about Batum also
Looking forward to it.
It should hopefully motivate matthews to improve
But this was not so for Brandon Roy who listened to teammate Nicolas Batum, "You're an All-Star, a 3-time All-Star. Take the ball. They can't stop you. You just have to believe in yourself."
by speakers92blazers on Feb 14, 2012 6:03 PM PST via mobile reply actions
Or it will push matthews to the brink mentally
Just kidding though, I think this is an excellent coaching move. Shakes things up a little bit and gives Batum some minutes and the second unit a different look.
The tensions are so high because the stakes are so low!
I'm afraid he'll never be the same;
he’s rapidly heading toward the Blake/Outlaw/Bayless/Fernandez global (FG%) cooling phenomena.
I would have benched Felton and Gerald, myself.
Those guys can’t shoot or finish consistently.
Come on, let's all hug it out.

are you suggesting that the reason PA doesn't hire a GM
Is because Bedge supplies him all the advice he needs to run the team?

happy vday everyone! especially to our veterans!
wait— it’s not veteran’s day.
go blazers.
I don't always root for an NBA franchise, but when I do, I prefer the Portland Trail Blazers.
Still, lots of "veterans" that could use well wishing on this team.
Camby’s playing with a bruised ankle? For a guy with a history of not playing unless 100% he sure is putting in the time this season.
I will call this a victory
Only if our guards make more assists than turnovers and LMA plays less than 32 minutes.

If LMA has to play 44 minutes to eke out a narrow win, and if our guards continue their reckless play, we might as well pencil in the following 5 games as losses

THE LAMONSTER ERA IS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Need a solid win here
and then OKC, Hawks, Suns and Memphis need to win tonight. Pistons are hopeless.
We’d be back in 6th with Houston having the tie breaker over us and a couple losses back from Dallas.
I’m pretty sure Houston won’t finish in the top 4. If we somehow magically survive these next 7 games it would be nice to stay as close to 4 as possible.
I think houston is playing way over themselves right now
they are peaking real early, I hope we hit our stride at the right time
The tensions are so high because the stakes are so low!
Just when I said Nate wouldn't change the lineup because of something Quick wrote ....

I laughed too. I suspect he'd already made the call, and was just being ornery today
Wesley has probably known for a bit. He’s a pro, he should handle it well, he knows why he got demoted.
Personally I kind of leaned toward leaving Wes to try to find his groove
And instead start Crash at home, and Nic on the road, then let the better player that night finish the game.
here's hoping We$ comes out firing off the bench
whatever is going on with him might just yield to his competitive nature
Since I'm on a roll making predictions today ... I'll predict that Nash is NOT coming to PDX.
There that should do it. We’re getting Nash …
OK just my wishful thinking. But Nash and Hill are being held out the game tonight (yeah, its the 2nd game of a B2B2B for Phoenix) … Rice has been tweeting about Nash all day (yeah, Rice is never right about those things) … and Dwight Jaynes said tonight that he heard that Nash was ok about being traded to PDX (yeah, Dwight is even less reliable than Rice).
But hey, I can dream …

"After further review, prior to the spiking of the pass, the clock went to zero. The game is over."
Dang
Hes tearing it up, I really wonder what type of pay day this will earn him
The tensions are so high because the stakes are so low!
I think 27 pts and 11 assists.
He tied the game on a an and 1 and then won the game on a last second 3. Had 8 TO’s though.
Who gives a damn about the TO's
It’s his 6th game playing full time minutes and possessing the ball all game. He’ll get better in that category. What a player though. Damn reminds me a bit of Nash except less refined.
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
don't try to figure it out

And run who at PG?
Crawford? And Felton running the second unit? Or Nolan? Nah. Our hands are kind of tied with Felton right now. He just has to shoot and pass his way out of this slump.
"Luke is our go-to Chalupa man," Matthews said. "Designated."
Suns need to actually score some if my evil schemes are going to work
preferable need at least a couple pts in the 2nd quarter.
ya i have a few friends in ny who are totally caught up in all this
and i have to watch freaking raymond felton play every night.
i feel so happy for lin and ny, but man…. why can’t something like this happen to us?

I think Brandon's play in years past occasionally inspired similar jubilation.
Maybe it wasn’t as extreme because it wasn’t as unexpected, but that guy had some amazing stretches.
It's killing me.
Even a weakened Brandon could flash greatness that made me believe in something great. Right now, I’m not getting much of that.
"All is vanity and vexation of spirit."

LaMarcus has had near half a season at the same level as 08-09 Roy, but the rest of the roster is dreck… just like NYK.
i keep dancing on my own.
lamarcus can be as productive as hell
but i dont think he can ever evoke the emotions from me that broy did
PHILLY!
yeah but that’s partially because of the state of the franchise. The state of the Knicks franchise is a lot closer to today’s Blazers than the sexy “team on the rise” Blazers of 08-09.
i keep dancing on my own.
He also had a flair for the dramatic.
LMA hasn’t hit many game-winning shots. Brandon made you believe he could single-handedly impose his will on the end of any game.
he's had a lot of clutch moments denied to him lately
first with the block that got called as goaltending, then with Crawford not passing him the ball in overtime.
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
Yeah, the Dallas game really had the potential to be one of those Brandon-esque nights for him.
LMA hit big shot after big shot. Pity the Blazers couldn’t close it out.
Lin is hungry for awesome plays ... Felton is ... hungry

no
they’re still committing over half their cap to guys who don’t pass or play defense, one of whom has uninsurable knees.
i keep dancing on my own.
It's certainly a great story, and it must be fun for them.
Of course, it’ll probably vanish in an instant as soon as Carmelo comes back. Then they’ll just be the Knicks again. I’d love to be wrong about that, though. Lin’s a lot more enjoyable than either of the two “superstars” in NYC.
If Carmelo messes up Linsanity, NY fans will probably string him up or run him out of town on a rail!

So I'm watching the first game on NBA TV tonight, MIA/IND...
…and it had one ugly play. LBJ stole the ball, and took on a 1-on-2 fast break. He used his off arm/elbow to push one player out the way, took either three or four steps (including a full hop), then got a foul call and hit the layup. He then celebrated his great play.
Stuff like that just kills my enjoyment of the NBA some days.
How can they miss a full hop?!?
They can miss the arm or the third step… but a full hop?
Inexcusable.

Honestly
I’d rather give Armon Johnson another try just because… you never know.
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
I'm ready to see Blaze suit up...
…but yeah, Armon might not be the worst PG on the team anymore.

No he's in street clothes this game

I bet he's wearing a jersey underneath.
Now if only he could find a phone booth…

yeah. he had a decent run there to start with before people figured him out
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
Nolan lol this was your chance man
don’t need to be a star. Just make some decent decisions.
Batum first to the bench?
back for 2 minutes and finally getting his first touch?
PLAY THE HOT HAND

no idea
i miss him, he must got on sarge’s bad side

And his defense was...
…not on the court. Ever.
"Luke is our go-to Chalupa man," Matthews said. "Designated."
Nice pass by Felton to Thomas
There, I tried to be positive
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
Half the time we can't lose
and half the time we can’t win
It's a sub .500 team without LMA
For sure.
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
Ughhh Crawford shot there
I mean chuck
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
This is... Not looking good
But this was not so for Brandon Roy who listened to teammate Nicolas Batum, "You're an All-Star, a 3-time All-Star. Take the ball. They can't stop you. You just have to believe in yourself."

RUN A PLAY FOR BATUM

Big sigh tonight
I do think the Blazers will eventually come back tonight. Probably after halftime when they get their wind and can correct their mindset.
of course he travels when they finally get the ball back to him

The Wizards...
Blazers basketball? Just basketball you say? More like a way of life
Washington attacking the rim with impunity
With no Portland front line to stand in the way
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
"Wizards brimming with confidence"
Yeah, that’s what happens when you stick your foot under the other team’s All-Star player in the first quarter.
I still hate Bruce Bowen.
Blacked out and tempted to finish work
This looks terrible from the Game Cast perspective. I’m really wanting to just close that tab and MAYBE watch the replay if there is one tomorrow.
If Aldridge is out for any extended period.
It would be a good time to blow this sucker up and rebuild.

Pretty sure he wont
Reports are that he just has a sprain, but they are still having xrays to be sure

High ankle sprains and can be a lingering issue.
I think I am slowly drifting towards the AK view of things.

get the first pick in the draft and pair him with LaMarcus & Batum
proceed to dominate the league.

Aldridge Xrays negative
won’t return tonight
tempo slowed considerably after nolan and crawful came in
still hasnt picked back up now. crawful is a ball stopper
PHILLY!
Wow. I just realized I had tickets to this game.

we let them to the rim every time
while our guys take horrid contested fade aways
From Game Cast
It appears that we cannot defend off of the dribble, rebound either defensively or offensively, shoot (not a shock there), make good decisions (again), or penetrate. Sound about right to those that are able to view?

not only is Ray a bad PG, but I'm starting to think he's one of the worst players in the league

Felton is absolutly terrible in every way a guard can be.
He can’t shoot, he can’ run a pick and roll, he can’t run a team, he doesn’t play defense, he can’t even make a decent kick out chest pass. He must go or we are not even going to be a 500 team.

In a half court set,
how about we not set screens with both the bigs at the same time, hmm?
-8 in rebounds already?!?
Sweet Baby Hay Soos! How can they have forgotten basic defense principles? Pack it in I guess.
Lose Roy, Lose Andre
not to mention LaMarcus rolling his ankle in this game who is the only thing holding this team together besides Camby/Thomas.

Outside of Batum and maybe Camby, it seems like we’ve come to the realization that the rest of the roster is mediocre at best.

We are 37% from 3
That’s bad, but not terrible. 40% all around, not good. -9 rebounding. We got some issues. How about Johnson? He at least can jump.
no ball movement and bad defense
move the ball around and get Wes/Nic some open shots.
I have been without access to blazers related news for like 5 hours.
What am I uhhhh walkin into here?
GDT?
We went like this, he went like that. I say to Hollywood: Where'd he go? Hollywood says: where'd who go?
I am sure this has been discussed on Blazersedge already (I'm not sure though)
but I think Lin is Brandon Roy reincarnated. Very similar games, and Lin’s crossover step back jumper very much reminds me of Roy’s (and his drives to the hoop and methodical play).
