Still Waiting On Blazers C Greg Oden

Friday Update:

Portland Trail Blazers Acting GM Chad Buchanan said Friday that center Greg Oden is still not clear for surgery on his left knee because of the ankle blood clots.

"Nothing new," he said. "The doctors in Colorado are addressing his blot clot and once that is complete Greg will have the surgery on his left knee."

Friday marks two weeks since Oden's right knee surgery. The Blazers had said repeatedly the plan was for Oden to undergo left knee surgery within 10 days to two weeks.

Tuesday Update:

Here are a few more quotes from Blazers Acting GM Chad Buchanan regarding Oden's left knee procedure. Buchanan said that the decision to go forward with the procedure has not changed even though a firm date has still not yet been set.

"Still kind of up in the air on a date," Buchanan said. "Nothing is set in stone on when they are going to go in and work on his left knee at this point. It's kind of a day-to-day update we get from the doctors there [in Vail] on when they are ready to do it."

Buchanan said that the "minor" blood clots discovered in Oden's left ankle on Feb. 3 remain the deciding factor in determining the date of the procedure, and that there haven't been other setbacks.

"I can't give you an exact date, but it should be here shortly, assuming everything goes as planned."

Monday's Post: The waiting game continues for the latest round of health updates concerning Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden.

On Feb. 3, Oden underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure on his right knee. Blazers Acting GM Chad Buchanan said after the procedure that the team hoped that Oden would undergo a similar procedure on his left knee within two weeks, although some "minor" blood clots in Oden's left ankle had to be addressed before that procedure could take place.

On Feb. 5, Jason Quick of The Oregonian reported that the date for Oden's surgery was tentatively set for Feb. 13.

Feb. 13 has arrived, and Buchanan said via text message that he had "nothing... at this point" to report regarding Oden's left knee but that an Oden health update is "likely" expected "later this week."

This Friday, Feb. 17, would mark two weeks following Oden's right knee procedure.

Oden's left knee has been operated on twice before during his time with the Blazers. First, after Oden fractured his patella during a Dec. 2009 game, and then again after he suffered a non-contact injury during his rehabilitation process that required microfracture surgery in Nov. 2010.

Somethings not right

when a blood clot becomes a minor issue. i really hope he plays again though

Blood clots are fairly common after arthroscopic. Takes time for the blood thinners to work and then you have to ease off of them. Don’t want to be doing another surgery while on them.

lol, I'm sure that's exactly why Ben does it.

The truth has nothing to do with it,right ? Hey, I honked once too. That plan isnt working so well.
But it is what it is. When do they get an exception ? That’s all I really want to hear from Larry. Chad should be out scouting for someone to draft, who is going to play. If they can handle it themselves, with no gm, they need to do so. ;)

just win baby !

aren't 3 injured players required for injury exceptions?

and I’m not sure how a lack of constant updates about Oden’s surgeries means the team isnt scouting college players/potential draftees

Oden is a beast!

Me and the other guy, well they hypnotized us to say Oden is a beast! from time to time. It was never true but they hypnotized a lot of us and we kept repeating it and well Oden got some big money and so did his agent and the fans had some thrills so all in all I guess it worked out pretty good.

I knew it all along

They’re secretly working him out in syberia in the frigid cold using old style tactics of training. All these “Surgeries” are just to throw the wool over the opponents eyes. When the time is right, when the Oden Call (Giant fallice in the sky) is put out. He will show up on that night and destroy all who stands in his path.

Fire shall rain down from the heavens

And the feaux-centers of the league shall tremble in fear of he who was once called “Bust”. He shall have been reborn as the mighty thundergod Oden, a center the likes of which the league has seen only with the turning of generations. Only the great heros Dwight and Bynum will be able to stem the tide of his anger, and even they will be left broken in his path. And so shall the Blazers ascend to the heavens.

But nah, in all seriousness I think he makes it back by the playoffs and makes a serious impact in 15-20 mpg, shuts up all the doubters.

Sorry but he is done

some bodies are just not meant to play pro sports, see Brandon Roy. It’s sad, but true. I bet Oden has spent more time in a hospital bed than on the court during actual games. That is just sad.

Who?

Who is still waiting on Greg Oden’s progress? I played the “cautious optimism” card all the way up to the announcement of the new round of scopes.

There’s been a lot of theories about what the cause is. Genetics, body mechanics, alcohol. All three or maybe just those hard years of time traveling with Dr. Who. The moment the team used the “setback” as grounds to bargain him down to 1.5M, that was proof they stopped waiting even before I did. In WARP terms, that puts his projected value somewhere around Chris Johnson territory. 8 times the talent, 1/8th the minutes played. He’s probably completely capable of living a normal life, but professional athletics are basically off the table.

I don’t blame Greg. I’m really sad it’s played out this way. No hard feelings, but I think he’s gonna be allright sooner than we are.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice they're not.

I always bite!

Everytime i see a picture of Oden and a headline i always read the story only to be left with that same empty feeling.
A story that there is no new news reguarding Greg Oden. I can’t help but hope he actually plays again for the Blazers.

by kjironman1 on Feb 14, 2012 7:11 AM PST reply actions

To me?

Very unfortunately the parameters of Blazer basketball reality in relationship to Greg Oden are…still rehabbing….no return in sight…on a rapidly expiring 1 year qualifying offer that will leave Oden an unrestricted free agent.

I don’t mean to be cold or callous, but everything else really doesn’t seem like news. Tell me if for some reason it sounds like Oden might actually play. ( I doubt it, at least this season). And this summer? However the Oden situation plays out, will be news. But mid-season athroscopic procedures? I hope and expect they will go well. But we aren’t going to get much news beyond that. Sarcastically I think they could accidently amputate Odens leg…sew it back…and we would get the usual “The Surgery Was A Success” press release.

To be clear...

..it is unclear when exactly he will or will not have a procedure, that will render his status for the remainder of the year up in the air. This is a minor setback from him being “on schedule” for a return sometime this season (possibly) to be re-evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

There is no reason for Portland to get rid of any player right now let alone their number one pick. I could see if we had 14 other

all stars lined up to play here, but Oden isn’t holding up someones spot on this team. I don’t get why fans like yourself repeat this message. What affect does Oden being on the injured list have on you?

absolutely nothing.

If anyone is still waiting for Oden to appear in a Blazer's uniform, they are going to be wating a LONG time.

I expect that he will spend this entire season rehabbing on the Blazer’s dime (Thank God they were able to reduce their offer to him), and then hit the FA market where he will likely traipse off to join LeBron and friends on the Heat, making us look as sad as Cavaliers fans. Well, hopefully not as pathetic, but I wouldn’t put it past Larry Miller to issue a nasty email proclaiming that the Blazers would win a championship before Oden ever did.

by rhaegar on Feb 14, 2012 3:52 PM PST reply actions

I never want to hear about Oden again, unless it is either

1. He is suiting up tonight and is expected to play limited minutes in his first game back in 2.5 years (or whatever it’s been) or
2. He has been traded as part of a package for Steve Nash or (fill in the blank)….

This includes weird pictures of him or his bizarro female friends—not interested.

It would be glorious if he plays for us one day, but I spend zero time thinking about it until one of these non-informational posts pops up.

Tell me again why we traded Miller?

Breaking News: Oden is still injured.

by tyeforshee on Feb 17, 2012 2:19 PM PST reply actions

I want the truth. . . and I'll wait for the book. Is someone writing one?

Look, I understand the Blazers can’t really tell us the situation, and Oden and his agent can’t tell us the real situation. There’s a multi-million dollar contract this summer in the balance, so of course they can’t be honest with the public. And the doctors are blocked by medical privacy laws blah blah blah. But I want the truth. I feel like Oden, or some writer, owes it to Portland for a full honest explanation. It should be in a book, Oden’s biography (authorized or not), that comes out in 10 or 15 years. Is anyone currently working on an Oden book? Or maybe an ESPN 30 for 30, but that might not contain enough detail. But I want someone to explain what was discussed behind closed doors to me, in a series of interviews with now-retired Oden, all the Blazer GMs (KP, Cho, Chad, 2012 GM, etc.), Allen, Larry Miller, McMillan, etc. Just lay it out for us. I’ll pay full price for the hardcover, I just want to know the truth. And don’t give me too many “you can’t handle the truth” responses, they are overplayed. Are we clear?
