Andre Miller appreciation thread
I never like the Felton/Miller trade. I got into arguments with my friends when it happened.
The rationale: "Felton's younger! He can shoot and will open up the floor!"
"Andre is old and can't make a three." "He is a cancer and doesn't get along with Nate. Never won in the playoffs!"
All I saw from Miller is someone who made LMA an All-Star player, could break down defenses, get to the line, and provided stability that we had sorely lacked before his arrival. The more I watch the Blazers now, it is clear that the trade has been devastating to the team. Felton cannot shoot any better than Miller and may be the worst PG in the game right now. He is an average passer (as a side-note - how many Alley Oops to Aldridge this season?), out of shape, and a choker. His defense is overrated. This trade may have eliminated any change this core group of players goes anywhere in the playoffs.
Miller, meanwhile, continues to chug along, making his teammates better in Denver.
I understand not everything is Felton's fault. But, he sets the tone for the offense and it isn't pretty. Now may be dependent on a sixth-man instant offense shoot-first guard to carry the PG duties. I like Crawford, but that isn't his job nor should it be.
Sad.
We miss you, 'Dre.

I was pretty bummed when we traded Dre
But I will say that having an abbreviated training camp and preseason to integrate Felton into a new system is very difficult, though his shot and decision making have largely been poor to this point.

Is "spilt" a word? Is that how it's spelt?
Ok I changed my signature. Do you like it better now?
You cannot integrate into a system smoothly
if you show up completely out-of-shape. It makes me feel he doesn’t take his job seriously. He isn’t enough of a natural to work himself into a groove during the season. The lockout excuse wore out 10 games ago.

Get over it.
While I understand that you are upset that we don’t have Miller anymore, it is probably simply because Felton has not worked out well for us to date. Let’s move forward and not continue to dwell on the woulda, shoulda, coulda. I wish we’d never traded Clyde Drexler but, hey, it’s done.

I kid, I kid. As with all things in life — good, bad, or indifferent — it must come to an end.
didn't we already have one of these?
probably when the trade was announced

we've had about thirty of these

yeah. everybody loves Dre and Felton turned out to be a complete failiure, so I guess it's inevitable.
I only expected Felton to be an average point guard, but I’m pretty sure no one was expecting him to be this bad unless they knew he was going to pull a Shawn Kemp over the lockout.

I Understand your feelings here
but Miller is gone and he aint coming back, and talking about him only makes me dislike Felton(Failton) even more. Hindsight is 20/20—at the time of the trade, I thought wed be ok, now that almost half of the season is gone with no improvements from Ray, I keep inching towards the trade Ray for Nash bandwagon. If after 33 games Ray is still sucking this bad—I pray pray pray they trade him.

Miller might yet return
He knows a good fan base when he sees one.
Anyone is better than Felon though. Felton is so bad that no one wants him anymore. Nash would be nice but we’d have to give up a lot more than Felton.
Ok I changed my signature. Do you like it better now?
At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if Dre gets a standing ovation at the Rose Garden...
the next time his team comes into town.
The cake was a lie.
"He knows a good fan base when he sees one."
Why would Andre Miller care about the overly entitled Blazer fan base? Smartly, Miller treats the NBA like a profession. For Miller, the two things most important to him are financial security — as is the case with most everyone — and a starting job; that’s it.
One place I could see Miller go to is Utah — as that’s where he played his college ball — which’d allow Devin Harris to slide to shooting guard. Since C.J. Miles and Josh Howard will likely exit via free agency, the Jazz could then sign Miller. That’d form a ten-man rotation next season of Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap, Gordon Hayward, Harris, and Dre starting, with Enes Kanter, Derrick Favors, Alec Burks, Raja Bell, and Earl Watson coming off the bench.
damm, that is some forethought

I honsetly thought Utah was going to try and get rid of their veterans
and give their young players the starting positions, but I guess they’re doing fine just keeping their young and generally promising rookies and sophomores on the bench for a few more years.
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
The main thing is that those youngsters receive playing time.
Is Al Jefferson the long-term solution? No, but he can hold down the fort this season and next as Enes Kanter refines his game. Then, in 2013, Jefferson will leave and Kanter can ascend to the starting center spot.
Yet, if Andrew Bogut checks out healthy this summer, Utah should consider trying to work out a trade with Milwaukee that’s centered around the former Ute for Al Jeff.
Gordon Hayward is starting at the 3, so he’s already claimed his spot. Rookie Alec Burks, on the other hand, is currently playing behind Raja Bell and C.J. Miles at the 2. For Burks, though, the question is whether or not he’s a long-term fit at the 2 or the 3. Many folks see him as a future starting 2, but I see him more as a backup 3 — think Marquis Daniels — which means that next season he should receive the minutes presently going to veteran stopgap Josh Howard.
In the 2012 NBA Draft, the Jazz should target a shot creating two guard like Jeremy Lamb — who should be available with the pick that Golden State owes Utah, which is top-seven protected this year — and, if it misses the playoffs, use its own pick on a true 7-footer like Meyers Leonard to further solidify its frontline depth. The Jazz’s own pick, however, would go to the Minnesota T’wolves if Utah makes the playoffs, as it’s lotto-protected this year.
http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/draft/future_drafts/detailed
I sort of assumed Burks was more of a starting 2 and they needed a point guard
This draft doesn’t seem to have many lottery-worthy PGs anyway, so they’d probably be better off going with what you suggested.
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
Yeah, this is an extremely thin draft at point guard.
That’s the biggest reason why I think that Utah signing Andre Miller to a two-year, MLE-level contract would work out well for both parties.
I think we should have
one of these every time Felton has a crappy game (which will probably be almost every game left this season).
I feel like we've appreciated him plenty at this point.

I can never have enough appreciation threads for Andre Miller
And, oddly enough on BE, that isn’t sarcasm.
I love me some Andre Miller! Highest basketball IQ in the NBA. Put up 52 to win in Dallas. Schooled LMA on the roll part of pick and roll. What’s not to like.
Go! Andre Miller! Go!
LaMarcus "Macrohard" Aldridge
I want truth in advertising!
It’s also not really an Andre Miller appreciation thread, when most of the original post is about how bad The Miller/Felton trade was, how bad Felton is, and how Crawford shouldn’t be playing PG longterm.
It’s more of a lets trash the trade and crap on Felton thread.
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"
My people will...
…be contacting your people…It’s going to be hard for me to prove damages because you are probably right…but it’s the principal of the whole thing….
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"
A couple of things.
The people that no doubt were most disappointed by the Andre trade were LaMarcus Aldridge, Wesley Matthews, N. Batum and M. Camby. These are the players whose games really benefitted from his passing and team-first style of play.
Secondly, it was the acquisition of two chuckers, Raymond Felton AND Jamal Crawford that has really hurt this team on top of the loss of Andre. A team can have one guy who doesn’t look to facilitate the best shot on the floor for a teammate, but two on the floor at the same time is lethal.
Finally, and I’ve said this before, there were plenty of us that screamed foul when the trade was proposed and made. And plenty of us who didn’t believe the treatment Dre got when he arrived. But that is the american way: style over substance. Blazersedge fans just seem to be particularly easily duped in this way.

yeah its Crawfords fault that Wes is not a NBA starter and that the management brought in Felton and Crash two known ???
Crawford is one of the leagues best 6th men and is one right now even though weve done nothing to actually put him ina position to succeed .

Too late for this thread
But to go along with it I miss Dre, he was so old school laying out Blake Griffin, throwing alley-oops to LMA, worst mistake the Blazers have done since 2007, and we all know what happened in 07. But what ever too late, lets get rid of Felton AkA “Cup Cake” AKA “Fat turnover” AKA “FAT Mistake”
not mad at Felton,
but Dre gave himself an assist off the backboard and faked a timeout to complete a layup. He also made a pass that created the play of the year.

Wish Andre would read some of these...I have a feeling other teams have felt the same
way after he is gone.
I liked him the whole time he was here..but he is gone now. And I’m sure there is another point guard out there who will work very well with the new coaching staff the Blazers are going to hire when the team decides to purposely tank the rest of the season in order to make sure this happens…or not…!!!
by Natsthecat on Feb 13, 2012 10:34 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
The team tanking, as in a less than .500 record, will simply lead to trading off expiring contracts for draft picks,
Or even worse, just letting them walk at the end of the season. Next year’s starting line-up: Smith (or new draft pick), Mathews, Batum, LAM, and cheap FA or new draft pick. It’s not rebuilding, just retooling with younger guys!!! Maybe E. Williams will win 6th man of the year award!
Philly missed him terribly
but they have recovered nicely this season

I loved Miller
Still do. You’re talking about a 18 career PER player in 1000 career games. That’s a hell of a career, especially for a PASS FIRST oriented PG. Dennis Johnson has a 13.5 career PER, and he’s in the HOF (although he was a GREAT defender at position). The thing that bugs me about some people’s perspectives of Dre is that he isn’t “valuable” because his range didn’t extend beyond 18 feet; heightened perhaps by his unathletic appearance and stoic demeanour. And who can forget the ‘Dre has never won a playoff game’ comment from his detractors.
But Miller is a gamer. As hard-nosed as they come with incredible basketball IQ. He rarely does more on the court than he’s capable of, and excels at getting the ball to his teammates in ideal scoring position. And regarding the lack of playoff success – I can understand this comment if Dre were the ‘Go-To’ guy or main star of the team, but he isn’t. He was a nice 3rd option scorer and 3rd cog on a club in his prime. You CANNOT blame lack of playoff success on Miller, because he’s never played a playoff game with a seeded team who had home court advantage. He was never the “guy” to lead a team to a championship, but rather, a facilitator. Miller’s best shot was with Carmelo Anthony is Denver, and we all see how good of a Go-To guy he is.
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB

"Dennis Johnson has a 13.5 career PER, and he’s in the HOF (although he was a GREAT defender at position)."
And K.C. Jones is in the Basketball Hall of Fame with a career 10.4 PER.
That said, though, it’s weird to me how Jones and Dennis Johnson have been enshrined, while Jo Jo White is still on the outside looking in at the HOF.
It's mid February...
Full Disclosure:
I liked Andre Miller.
I thought he played well for us.
I was for the Felton/Miller trade because of many of the reasons stated.
I think there has been enough Andre Miller appreciation threads, posts and articles. The Blazers gambled. They traded aging talent for a younger player. So far? It hasn’t worked.
Yes Andre Miller was and is a great player. But, in 4 years or less? I’m guessing all comments about him as a player will be retrospective.
I liked Andre Miller a lot…and I get that a lot of people liked him, appreciated him and now miss him.
It’s mid February…time to move on.
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"
I was just saying that I missed Dre the other day
I was not mad that he got traded, although I would have preferred it if we kept him.
Ray Ray can still work this out. What I can’t figure out is what the change has been since the opening of the season when we were running at a somewhat faster pace. IS it really the defenses that changed to slow us up or have we done it to ourselves?

ironically miller and feltons numbers are identical
except MILLER has a better shooting percentage.
Age won't affect Andre Millers game
as much as most. his game is not built around “speed” or “athleticism”. It’s about intelligence and timing, Reading situations and making the smart play. we would be far better off with Andre than Ray Felton. I’m thinking 6 or 7 games better at this point. I think Andre would make Jamal Crawford look like an Allstar allowing him to get open to shoot which is his more natural skill set. It took me a while to warm up to Dre but I really miss him now.
