Lloyd: Kyrie Irving Talks About "Best Friend" Nolan Smith

Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal has a nice look at the friendship between Cleveland Cavaliers rookie point guard Kyrie Irving and Portland Trail Blazers rookie point guard Nolan Smith. Irving says the two are "best friends" after teaming up for Duke University last season. -------------------------- Irving lost his mother when he was a child and Smith’s father died when he was 8. While they never really spent much time talking about it, that connection immediately bonded them. That’s why Irving agreed to participate in the foundation, which is geared toward children who have lost a parent. Washington Wizards point guard John Wall has also agreed to participate, Smith said. "We want to reach out to kids who are like the three of us," Smith said. "We know what it’s like and hopefully we can help others in a similar situation." ... "He had a lot of doubters," Irving said of Smith. "Last year when I got hurt, it put him in a perfect position to be successful. He got to show everyone who the real Nolan Smith is." -------------------------- -- Ben Golliver | benjamin.golliver@gmail.com | Twitter
