Haynes: LaMarcus Aldridge Hoping For 2012 Olympics Invite
Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com reports that Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge would like to be considered for Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics.
---------------------------
"It would be an honor to play for my country this summer if I was asked to," Aldridge told CSNNW.com. "I would do it in a heartbeat. Hopefully I get a call."
---------------------------
Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports that the first round of Team USA cuts are coming in two weeks. 18 players will be selected, with six of those eventually serving as alternates who won't make the 12-man team. He reports that the group will include members of the 2008 Olympics team and the 2010 World Championships team, with Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin the only outsider that is being considered.
Aldridge was selected for the Team USA program in 2010 but backed out prior to the World Championships in Turkey. Blazers coach Nate McMillan, a team USA assistant, said at the time that he wished Aldridge had been on the team.
At the time, Chris Tomasson of AOLnews.com reported that Team USA Director Jerry Colangelo said that Aldridge's decision was "not a positive" development for his 2012 Olympics team hopes but that he would "never close the door."
Barring injuries, here's my guess for the 12-man 2012 Olympics team.
PG: Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade
SF: LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony
PF: Chris Bosh, Blake Griffin
C: Dwight Howard, Tyson Chandler
I think Minnesota Timberwolves forward and Portland native Kevin Love is the 13th man right now.

Interesting guesses
Although I think Aldridge & Love would be selected over both Bosh & Griffin. We’ll just have to see.
Chandler and Bosh have no business being on the team
Stoudemire, Love, and Aldridge should be chosen ahead of everyone not named Dwight Howard for the post players.
"Sasha? That's a sissy name." -Mike Rice
Throughout his career, Chris Bosh has been tremendous in international play.
For whatever reason, the Bosh hate has reached levels of pure idiocy at this point.
"I Am Mine"
Bosh is a good player, but as power forwards go, he doesn't rank higher than aldridge, love, or randolph
stoudemire would also be better than bosh although he’s constantly at risk for injury and probably wouldn’t want to take that risk.
The great thing about Bosh is he fits in absolutely perfectly at Miami
people just forget he’s there.
Johnson, Johnson, Smith, Smith, Thomas, Williams, and Babbitt: the Blazer's law firm.
Man, that's a good team
When D-Will and Carmelo are your third-stringers, you’re probably in pretty good shape.
Get Bosh outta there though. K Love and Aldridge would be better for International style of play.
But if Aldridge wanted a shot, he probably shouldn’t have backed out a couple years ago. However, wasn’t that when his Mom was sick? 2016, LA.
Me too.
It would be extremely exhausting for him.
Me three.
I do NOT want him participating in the Olympics until after he has participated in a deep Blazer run through the playoffs.
The only personal accolade he should be considering is being an All-Star.
LET THE LAMONSTER ERA BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah I remember thay well
Aldridge got all sorts of flack for being soft and not going to Team USA. Turns out he was a) helping his mom who had cancer and b) becoming awesome. Don’t see how Griffen gets in over him. It’s not a Toyota commercial, its the Olympics. And nobody would think Blake gives you a better shot at a gold medal.

Blake Griffin is really good at basketball.
Don’t pidgeon-hole him as a flashy dunker. He’s a beast on the boards, getting tons of tips and put-backs. Has a some quick moves to the rim, including a very effective spin.
He can grab a rebound, dribble down the floor, split defenders, and finish at the rim. Blake’s also a great passer for his size, with a good feel for the game.
His face-up jumper has been really off this year. But the USA team should have plenty of outside shooters already. I envision Blake wreaking havoc on the less athletic front lines he’ll see in Olympic play, especially on the fast break.
He’s also more fun to watch than any other big in the NBA and has the kind of name recognition that will help drive up viewership. So I think he’ll definitely make the team.

For international play
a more experienced and skilled 4 is ideal.

Blake Griffin and Kevin Love are more skilled ball handlers and deft passers than LMA, so yeah.
"I Am Mine"
but Aldridge is a much better defender than any of the power forwards mentioned.
bosh, griffin, and love are all pretty horrible on the defensive end
I wouldn't say Griffin's a better passer, he just racks up more assists.
At least, he doesn’t look like that much better of a passer. Slightly better handles, but I think LMA is a little underrated in that regard. He turns the ball over very little for as often as he touches the rock (not that turnovers are a good indication of a guy’s handles).

He can't play defense.
Post D is very important in international play. Love is smart enough to play zone, I’m sure, but he could never hang in the paint with the Gasol bros.

I agree on your roster choices
people are quick to take shots at Chandler and Bosh being on the team – but remember this isn’t NBA basketball it’s international ball, and Bosh is one of our best defenders on opposing bigs, because most bigs in the international game are mid-range type of guys and not conventional lost post bangers. Chandler is also pretty rangy as a defender for the center position.
Love is good and would be solid in the global game, but I like Griffin on the roster. Imagine a lineup of Rose, Durant, Lebron, Griffin, and Howard – how the heck are you supposed to stop that?!?
As far as LMA goes – he burned his bridges when he pulled out. He was exactly the type of player they wanted, but one of the things Colangelo asked them all for was loyalty/commitment to the program, and when he pulled out before the WCs they pretty much wrote him off. Barring injury to a couple of players on the front line, they’re not going to give him a spot – especially with adequate replacements in Bosh, Griffin, and Love. Bosh isn’t quite as good as LMA, but he has a very similar size and skill set.

Lamarcus is a versatile defender
but the international team might want some toughness in the paint at the 4 spot. You’re not getting any post D from Griffin and Love, but they have their skill sets.
All things considered, LMA fits best alongside Howard as his help D is now such that they would make an unstoppable front line.
Is Nate still on the staff? Would that affect any player considerations?

Howard/LMA would be scary

Yes, I think Nate is. And you would think so wouldn't you?
LMA plays enough during the regular season..though wouldn’t mind him
mixing it up with massive competitors…as long as he doesn’t have to play a ton of minutes.
LMA would be great on the international team
He’d play both ends of the floor and do what needs done to win. He’s still the most consistent guy we have.
just imagine Aldridge running the PnR with Paul/Rose
……… now enough of that, this is a family friendly website

LMA should go over Bosh for sure.
Chandler has that whole NBA champion thing that he helped to earn….
If LA doesn't go to the All-Star game then I'm basically counting him out of the Olympic team.
But this was not so for Brandon Roy who listened to teammate Nicolas Batum, "You're an All-Star, a 3-time All-Star. Take the ball. They can't stop you. You just have to believe in yourself."

Off topic it looks like OKC is going to lose Eric Maynor for the year. I'm surprised Ben didn't post a clip
of twitter.
The only thing sad about that,
is that Fran Fraschilla didn’t realize that Al Horford plays for Dominican Republic.

Last July, here were my comments on a potential Team USA for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
“At point guard, I’d go with Chris Paul and Deron Williams. As it is, Williams is more suited for international play than either Derrick Rose or Russell Westbrook.
At shooting guard, I’d go with Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade. Rather than Ray Allen, I’d want Chauncey Billups back as the veteran leader, fifth guard in the rotation, and 11th/12th man on the team.
At small forward, I’d go with LeBron James and Kevin Durant. Skip Carmelo Anthony here, but not altogether. In all reality, Anthony is more suited to play the 4 internationally.
At power forward, I’d go with Anthony — as this is where he fits positionally — and also Kevin Love, whose court vision and long-range shooting are useful skills for this style of play.
At center, I’d go with Dwight Howard and Lamar Odom. Yes, Odom. Make no mistake, Odom did fantastically for extended minutes at center during the 2010 FIBA World Championship. Chris Bosh, who did a terrific job as the backup center behind Howard during the 2008 Summer Olympics, gets the final spot over Chandler."
http://www.blazersedge.com/2011/7/30/2306418/randy-hill-dreaming-up-a-perfect-mix-for-2012-olympics#73383883
Looking back, I’d pull Chauncey Billups due to age and Lamar Odom due to poor work ethic. I’d replace Odom with Blake Griffin — even though I get the argument for Tyson Chandler — and Billups with Derrick Rose, who I skipped over the first time around.
C: Dwight Howard
C: Chris Bosh
PF: Carmelo Anthony
PF: Kevin Love
PF: Blake Griffin
SF: LeBron James
SF: Kevin Durant
SG: Kobe Bryant
SG: Dwyane Wade
PG: Chris Paul
PG: Derrick Rose
PG: Deron Williams
Also, I shake my head in disgust reading nonsense that some folks spout about how Chris Bosh is worse than LaMarcus Aldridge. It’s some of the most ridiculous stuff I’ve read on here in ages.
As a #1 option, I’d take Bosh over Aldridge each and every time time. As a #3 option, I’d take Bosh over Aldridge each and every time. As a role player, I’d take Bosh over Aldridge each and every time.
Once again, I’ll explain why.
“Yeah, in all fairness to Chris Bosh, he was a more statistically productive #1 option in Toronto than LaMarcus Aldridge has been in Portland. For proof, view Bosh’s age 25 season last year and Aldridge’s age 25 season this year: [Link]
I also feel pretty safe in assuming that Aldridge would’ve wilted in Miami like a flower without sunlight if he played next to LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Like Bosh, Aldridge would’ve withered away as an ancillary option. I’d argue even more so than Bosh, though, as y’all’ve seen what happens with Aldridge when he steps aside for somebody else — such as Brandon Roy, who doesn’t hold a candle to James or Wade — and fades to the background."

I'd take Aldridge over Griffin
not because I think he is better, but because Team USA will need all the shooting it can get to avoid the upset via zone defense. Aldridge is deadly as a shooter at PF. We can’t have 10 players whose best move is charging towards the hoop.
Kevin Love earned his spot in 2010. He played against bigger players and did quite well. Gerald Wallace would have made the 2010 team as well if he didn’t get injured during practice. He should definitely get an invite to tryout for his defense. He would be the best one on one defender on the team.
The projected roster needs more defense and shooting so they don’t repeat the mistakes of other USA teams. This is why the 2008 team had Prince and Michael Redd.
there is really no way for the US team to lose.
If LBJ, Wade, Howard, and Rose all play for the team, the US squad should be able to steamroll even an all-star team made up of the international competition, much less single countries’ teams. Those four are the best in the world at their positions.
Surround them with guys like Paul, Anthony, Williams, and K*be, and you’ve got an absolute juggernaut.
So the other guys are basically there to round out the roster, keep things interesting, and contribute on the edges. Griffin’s athleticism, great off-ball movement, and cuts to the rim will be great for busting zones. Also great for getting people to tune in.
So I don’t think that LMA has a very good shot at making the US squad (assuming all those other guys play).
I’m not saying that LMA is not a great player, or that he would not do well in international play. I’m saying that the other available PFs are better, more exciting, and more likely to make the team.
Definately
All griffin does is dunk. Really that’s it. Nothing else to it. Can’t shoot, can’t block shots, or steal the ball, can’t make free throws. You know why his fg% is so high? Cause all he does is dunk
by TheShougPanther5 on Jan 8, 2012 4:43 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
if he wanted it then he should have put in the time
with no international playing experience, i doubt he has much of a chance barring a slew of major injuries to the other hopeful bigs.
was his mom really sick the summer of 2010? i seem to recall something like that – if so, tough choice but i think he made the right call hands down.
I think it would be a mistake not to take Love, especially with the international 3 point line. A solid case can be made for Aldridge, but its close between Bosh, Griffin and LA. Don’t think I’d take Chandler. Bosh or LA can handle the backup C— Bosh was the most effective 5 for the US in Beijing.
Chris bosh is so overrated
He’s a decent player, but is in no way an elite player. The only reason why is doing “well” is because he is the only post the heat have, just like how it was with the raptors. And Tyson chandler is good but not USA good. Lamarcus and love SHOULD be on USA. But since everyone except Portland seems to hate the blazers and the east coast (ESPN) doesn’t even bother to watch the blazers games because they begin at about 10:00 there. I doubt lamarcus will get on the team, even though he deserves it. There is no question that lamarcus doesn’t get the love he deserves.

Barring injuries, here’s my guess for the 12-man 2012 Olympics team.
PG: Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade
SF: LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony
PF: Chris Bosh, Blake Griffin
C: Dwight Howard, Tyson Chandler
I think Minnesota Timberwolves forward and Portland native Kevin Love is the 13th man right now.
Carmelo mostly played PF during the world champs so the team doesn’t really need to add another big assuming everyone else falls into line. Injuries may play a part as well – with compressed NBA season and with a few people already nursing naggin injuries – Wade, Kobe and Lebron etc. All of whom could be playing well into May/June and could open the door to Billups, Eric Gordon or Rudy Gay.
I hope LMA does get an invite though because unlike Griffin and Love, LMA has experience playing Center so like Bosh he can flip between the two spots. it is a long shot admittedly, but he would look great next to either Dwight Howard and Tyson Chandler or even playing with Chris Bosh.
