A large contingent of Portland Trail Blazers fans was irate on Thursday night when TNT did not air the first half of Portland's game against the Los Angeles Lakers because an earlier game between the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks went into triple-overtime. Because of the exclusivity of TNT's coverage deal, the first 24 minutes of the most anticipated game of the season were lost for good for virtually the entire country.

Mike Tokito of The Oregonian obtained this statement from Turner broadcasting regarding the situation.
-------------------------
A Turner spokesman sent The Oregonian a quote from Christina Miller, senior vice president of strategy, marketing and programming for Turner Sports.

"The Hawks-Heat triple-overtime game was an exciting national telecast," Miller said. "This was not a regional telecast and we would not leave our first game until its conclusion."

Asked if Turner considered making the Blazers-Lakers game available on another Turner network, spokesman Tom Caraccioli said Turner's other networks had commitments to programs they could not break.

I really feel sorry for Crash and LaMarcus

because they were robbed of some national exposure. TNT could’ve split the coverage by showing the late game on its western affiliates. I mean Wade and LeBron weren’t even playing!!!

This is a joke.

You would think instead of making excuses about trying to convince people to watch a heat Team without it’s stars playing against the hawks that they would want to try and capture a huge LA / Pdx market. Instead they put everyone thru one of the most exscruiating and terrible OT’s I have ever been forced to watch. Did hawks even score in third OT? That wasnt basketball.

by comptoncory on Jan 6, 2012 2:33 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

I agree with schedule change. Change the first game start time, back it up 1 hour

also be flexible with a certain amount of time to start the 2nd game-say up to 15min but no more than that. Or have game 2 on a sister network.

TNT SUCKS! I like the Kenny, Barkley show but this always seems to happen to game 2 on TNT. Then to not even apologize, what gall. How offensive!

I think the league needs to do something about this, because it seems to me like TNT is voiding their contract by not showing game 2. They say they have contractual obligation to show the game 1, well then they must have it to show our game, therefore by not showing our game, they are voiding their contract.

Or 5 letters: NBATV

Turner owns that, too, and they were showing some “classic” game from the 90s or something.

I can’t believe she used the word “exciting” to describe the Heat/Hawks overtime. It was more like watching a bed-ridden 95 year old with pneumonia: you know it’s going to end eventually, but it’s excruciating waiting for it to happen.

by superfly05 on Jan 6, 2012 3:44 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

As noted elsewhere, Turner does not own NBA TV

It’s leased to them and they run it. But the NBA owns it.

by Timmay! on Jan 6, 2012 3:48 PM PST up reply actions

That's hardly a mitigating factor

In fact, without being a contract lawyer, I’d say it makes an even stronger case for why they should use that channel for overflow. It’s the NBA’s product; win-win. I can’t imagine the league itself perceives crappy archive footage of some 90’s game as being superior content on an all-NBA channel to a current, live game of what is really a premiere western conference matchup.

by superfly05 on Jan 6, 2012 5:16 PM PST up reply actions

It's often not that simple when it comes to broadcasting agreements

They can’t change them on the fly. Like I noted elsewhere, contingencies should be planned for in advance. I don’t know if NBA TV is an option as a contingency due to the ownership setup.

by Timmay! on Jan 6, 2012 5:34 PM PST up reply actions

I'm just saying

There’s only two entities involved here (the NBA and Turner Broadcasting), that should have a common interest: showing fans professional basketball on television. The fact that the NBA and TNT manages to screw it up (repeatedly!) with lawyers and bad planning does not excuse that it is a screw-up.

What other sport has an entire half of a game pre-empted because of the previous game? Why does the west coast game always have to have a late tip-off, why not make Miami/Atlanta go an hour earlier once in a while?

Similarly, I constantly have this conversation with my wife, who is a chronic under-estimator of how long things take. If you never accept the idea that it usually takes longer than 10 minutes to get from Beaverton to NE, you will always be late. Honestly, I’d rather have to listen to Reggie Miller and Charles Barkley fill some post-game minutes than always missing the front end of games on TNT.

Time to adjust my medication?

I must be really out of touch. Because while I can clearly understand Blazer fans frustration and even local medias frustration at being locked out of coverage. I find myself siding with TNT.

As much as I personally don’t like it, I think 2 of their statements absolutely true. #1. Its a national telecast not a regional game. You cut away from the Hawks/Heat game, you upset a greater majority of fans that probably already invested 4 quarters PLUS into the outcome of the game in progress.

#2. Turners other networks had commitments to programming they could not break.

I think with the unexpected and unpredicatable nature of the unfolding of a 3 overtime game, it’s not quite as easy as simply flip a switch and show The Blazer/Laker game on some other venue.

I might be really out of touch or out of step with my fellow Blazer fans, but I’m not surprised nor too upset that TNT stayed with the Hawks/Heat game. If I was an executive charged with the decision of whether to stay with an multiple overtime game OR cut to the start of another game? There is no decision…you stay with the overtime situation.

Sure Blazer/Laker fans got shorted. Given the exclusivity that TNT maintains about broadcast rights..but I’ll admit, from a nationwide, National Broadcast perspective, I wouldn’t expect any other outcome.

Keep in mind...

the unfolding of an 3 overtime game is immediate and unpredicted. So your asking for some pretty serious on the fly adjustments to be made.

I suppose the unspoken option would be to tape delay The Blazers/Lakers game, starting at the conclusion of the Hawks/Heat game BUT showing the entire contest on tape delay.

But would that make people happy? Or just upset them more?

I don’t know, amongst Blazer fans I feel I can’t win this one…but personally, I’m not so upset.

Well...

…maybe you can’t win because it’s a poor argument. Although this may seem to you like an outsized reaction to a single event, many of us have had simmering anger towards TNT due to having to continually miss the beginning of games due to TNT’s poor capability to plan for sports viewing – especially for those of us on the west coast. They simply don’t seem to care and their arrogant response only backs up that opinion. This particular broadcast was simply the last straw. We see that ESPN can handle these scenarios just fine – why can’t TNT? They’re terrible response tells you what quality of management you are dealing with.

by NWfan on Jan 6, 2012 4:47 PM PST up reply actions

yes and no...

I agree that they couldn’t be expected to dump a tight game in progress (no matter how excruciating it is to watch). Unless it is a game that is completely out of hand early, they never do that. However, it seems to me that most people are upset that Turner doesn’t ever have any kind of contingency plan for alternate covereage. Even had the game ended in regulation we would have missed the first half hour or so of the Blazers / L*kers. And it isn’t the first time. I think the Heat / Hawks game wouldn’t have been the “exciting national telecast” they think it was if people had the option to switch over to a better game. There’s nothing exciting about watching the Hawks do everything they can (again) to give a game away.

by Tomahawk30 on Jan 6, 2012 3:09 PM PST up reply actions

That's not even addressed

I honestly don’t have a problem with them not cutting away. I’d be furious if they cut away from the OT of a Blazers game so that they could show even more Kobe Bryant.

However, scheduling the games so that they intentionally overlap even when they end in regulation is a problem that can be solved without any modern technology or sister networks, or picture in picture or magic at all. Just schedule so that you can show both games.

And it’s not like OT is unforeseeable.

by sagcat on Jan 6, 2012 4:49 PM PST up reply actions

NBATV is the solution

No one is expecting them to abandon an OT game (that essentially would be inflicting the same harm on another fan base). Turner should simply have a plan in place for when both games overlap which does happen quite frequently.

The simplest solution, in my opinion, is to broadcast the second game on NBATV until the first game concludes. NBATV never carries a game in opposition to TNT on Thursdays and when they do broadcast a game they always carry a local feed, so it clearly can be done.

The basic argument is TNT has far too long stuck to their status quo and cut the beginning of the west coast game.

Just give us a box in the upper right corner

Is that too much to ask? Not like it isn’t 20 year old technology. By the third overtime there were probably more Blazers fans watching that terrible game than Hawks and Heat fans. Most people probably watch Heat games for Lebron and Wade anyway and I’m not sure a Hawks fan could watch their team suck so bad.

Paul Allen, the 2011 Trail Blazers Owner/GM

The only thing I could do personally was turn TNT off on my TV.

We on the west coast get disrepected all the time from those on the east coast

by prof.mike on Jan 6, 2012 3:26 PM PST up reply actions

Is it unfathomable that the east coast start their games at 6pm

God knows we west coasters have to endure 4pm start time when playing back east. Maybe moiving a game up a hour for the East coast would be so hard after all. Or maybe we could make west coast fans wait until 9pm for their games to start.

In fairness

Atlanta is so horribly sprawled and mal-designed that driving anywhere takes 2.5 hours. So starting a game early there would be particularly problematic. Though it would give people an excuse to leave their 9-5 a bit early.

The 3-OT aspect....

…ignores the fact that even if the game had ended in regulation, They had no hope of getting to the start of the second game on time.

While y'all are here...

Last season the Blazers streamed KGW games for free to all of Portland on their web site. Do they still do that this year? Or is there a fee now?

(Just working on the GDT broadcast info)

In my best Milton voice.

Oooook but. I could set TNT’s building on fire.

TNT's next NBA contract

ought to have a performance clause. For every minute of playing time not broadcast, TNT will pay the NBA $100K, at least, per minute time penalty. Perhaps the penalty funds could to be allocated to teams with lost viewing time?

I’m inclined to agree with Krang on last night’s game, but suggest David call Ted and let him know that the current contract won’t be adequate next time and that any further missed minutes will be factored in the next negotiation.

I’m so happy that I can watch the streamed games now thank’s to Blazer.com … the OKC game was the first I watched guilt free on my computer. It is great to have that option in a small town that has a cable company that can’t afford comcast.

How hard is it to say "We're sorry"?

You’re not even saying it some intern types it.

If Paul Allen was forced to watch his team on TNT

this problem would be solved over a decade ago.

Turner can go ....yeah you know the rest

Im gonna try boycott them now. Except for Conan. I hate how they are acting like it is not a big deal. Hogging Nba games to themselves and leaving us with no other option.

If I never watch any of their programming (except blazers) anyway...

…does that count as joining your boycott.

I follow a lot of people on twitter, not just PDX people..

and not a single one of them wanted to watch that Hawks-Heat game, let alone 3 overtimes. It was not exciting, and people just wanted it to be over with. That’s a BS statement and that’s a ridiculous way to handle it.

here is proof that no one cared about the Heat-Hawks game last night

Did anyone notice all the empty seats in the arena?

If they can’t get butts in the seats (can I say that, BE?), why should anyone want to see them on TV?

Would it be so hard for TNT to replay the game this weekend as an apology?

I record all the games and save them to watch in the offseason. Now I’m missing the first half of a game in my collection. I’m suffering from imperfect collection syndrome! I must acquire the first half, haha!

by manfredi on Jan 6, 2012 6:00 PM PST reply actions

That was my biggest frustration

ESPN replays games. Comcast replays the games. The first half of this game will never air. If they didn’t have exclusive rights to the game I wouldn’t care. I would watch the local broadcast over them anyway.
