Charles Barkley: "That Portland Trail Blazer team is the best team I've seen in the West this year."
Kevin Harlan: "What do you like about them?"
Charles Barkley: "They're tall, they're athletic, they're deep. They've got a terrific coach in Nate McMillan. They are the best team in the West I've seen so far."
Conversation from a TNT Thursday night broadcast.

first nice thing ive ever heard barkley say about us
by jt$ on Jan 5, 2012 5:42 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
I keep hearing he was negative on the Blazers a lot
But everything I hear him say is neutral to positive….. all last season
Trade John Canzano
He wasnt really wrong
Surely over simplified, but I think some of us perceived that as hate when it was more just an observation of those teams..

He's always praised the Blazers
In fact, he wanted to play here after he left Philly because he loves our fanbase
He once did a taco bell commercial
where he attempted to “rap”
remember that?

You mean
the greatest Taco Bell commercial ever? Though that doesn’t say much given that his biggest competition is a talking chihuahua and an inane insistence on an extra meal during the day…

Barkely picked the Blazers over Chicago

'91-'92 Finals
Barkely predicted a Blazer series win if they opened on the road with a victory in the first two games.

He was joking
Barkley has never said anything good about Blazers
Did he mention that they don’t have a center but do have a pudgy little point guard?
No. He was joking

He was joking
Barkley always bad-mouths Portland.
Without a better center rotation Portland is a first round and out team.
With a solid center rotation, very scary, IMO.
by Steve Parrett on Jan 5, 2012 7:57 PM PST up reply actions
Obviously you have selective ear.
Barkley is usually neutral toward Portland or praising them and/or Nate McMillan.
"They're a jumpshooting team and jumpshooting teams don't win in the playoffs."
That has been his most constant comment the last few years on the Blazers and it isn’t positive.
This year we don’t necessarily have a great post game but we do get into the paint. And so far we are playing TIGHT D. No more Brandon, Rudy, Patty etc to hide.
put a body on 'em
Have we won in the playoffs?
Since we haven’t been out of the first round for years it looks like his assessment is pretty fair. Is that bad mouthing or accurately evaluating a teams strengths and weaknesses?

He probably watched us beat OKC.
I don’t value Barkley’s opinion a whole lot more than Shaq’s or any other goober on TNT.

Whatever. Barkley’s just going w/ our current record after this many games.
BEAT LA! Go Blazers!!
GO BLAZURRRRS!
Ok after they all say...
That blazers won’t even make the playoffs! Lame!

he followed it up...
by saying that Kevin Love was the “best power forward in the world who should be starting in the All-Star game”
M, period. Fresh, comma.
Hard not to love on Love
He’s a wonderful outlet passer, rebounder, scorer and 3 pt shooter. He is not the best at D but let’s be honest neither was BROY who almost to a person when he was at his best was the most beloved Blazer. 25.7 pts and 15 rebs is pretty damn spectacular if you ask me.
Also from the TNT Broadcast....
Heard this watching from International League Pass. The camera and sound came back through the online stream before the TV coverage had returned from the ad break (which happens a bit with live streams), and I got to hear this little exchange between Charles, Reggie and Kevin Harlan….
About Charles weight and Weight Watchers:
Charles: “I’m at 38 pounds now. They come and weigh me every two weeks. I aint never missed a weigh-in…never going to!”
Kevin: “Do you feel better?”
Charles: “I do I feel much better, but I aint givin away no money Kev, I’m not giving away no free money…. I thought this was the greatest scam going, getting paid to watch sports. This Weight Watchers thing is a bigger scam…”
Kevin: “yeah…(chuckles)”
About the Atlanta Hawks
Charles: “man I can’t stand to watch this Atlanta Hawk team play…”
Kevin: “This game is terrible…”
Charles: “It is”
Kevin: “Look at this game… 31 percent, God Almighty….”
Reggie: “Yeah but this is great for what you’re saying, you setting it up”
Charles: “Man the Hawks aint got… they got…they got nothin but a bunch of nice guys…… See if I were the Hawks… they’re the team to me… I try to do anything to get Dwight Howard, say you can have anybody on our team…”
Reggie: “Who them? (pointing towards the Hawks bench) He doesn’t wanna come here….”
Kevin: “Okay we’re back in Atlanta Charles with us tonight, Kevin Harlan, Reggie Miller…..”
Nice.
Nothing like being “mic’ed up” when you don’t know it. One time the CEO of our company—after a big talk during an all-company meeting (with a couple hundred people)—walked straight the bathroom and we could here the whizzing loud and clear.

Wasn’t uploaded by me, was linked in an article on Yahoo! Sports….
"It's a scam."

I think he was just referencing the fact that he's getting paid to lose weight.
Because he refers to the fact that he gets paid to talk about basketball as being a “scam”

barkley
Picked the mavs last year less than a month into the season and suck with them all year. I know he doesn’t look or sound too bright but I think he knos somethin about bsketball. Ill take the compliment either way
by PortlandReign81 on Jan 5, 2012 7:04 PM PST via mobile reply actions
Maybe
somebody from tnt told barkley to hype the Blazers because they are on tnt tonight
To be fair to Barkley,
his beef with Portland the last few years is that we have be primarily a jump-shooting team, and that jump shooting teams don’t win in the playoffs. With this now being LA and Wallace’s team, we are no longer primarily a jump-shooting team.
Disclaimer: This is a ‘truthy’ statement, a la Colbert. Meaning I haven’t looked at any of the stats, but it feels true.
Aut disce, aut discede; manet sors tertia, caedi
to be fair, he has been right
weve been a soft, live by the 3… usually die by the 3, 1st round and out fun team to watch. hopefully he is right this year too cause i like this team.
yeah, me too..It's like they have this whole new identity.
Between Camby…who is one SMART veteran LEADER..to Kurt Thomas..TOUGH..and also just solid..the Bulls fans were PISSED they didn’t re-sign him…to Wallace..who is a freaking COMPETITOR…and Craig Smith…who is also a beast..though I don’t know him as well…to that Crawford guy…man..what a great player and person…he’s like the teacher’s pet…and of course LMA who I love and who is learning and soaking all of this up…and of course Batum..who is so talented and needs to find his place to excel on this team…and Matthews whose 3 pt shots have been GREAT…and Felton, who can run AND plays defense and will be killer when he finally gets those lay ins at the rim.
I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!!!!!
Barkley has been hard on the blazers
But he’s also often been correct. This team obviously isn’t the same team from these last couple of years. Maybe he actually likes what we’ve got going for us so far? Maybe he has seen what the other teams in the west have to offer so far and thinks we have the best of the lot? I mean he did say last year that he felt LMA should have been in the All-Star game, so it’s not like he tries to hate on us just to hate on us.
Maybe he had placed a friendly wager on the blazers.
