Gameday Open Thread: Lakers vs. Blazers

Let the rivalry begin anew. Tonight, the Los Angeles Lakers come to town to play the Portland Trail Blazers (Late tip-off! ~7:45pm). We all know the Lakers dislike playing in Portland, and the Blazers would love to foster that attitude. What do you expect to see tonight?

Injury report: All's quiet.

Read: Dave's Preview | Blazers Media Notes | Facebook | Ben's updates on Twitter
Watch: TNT (Nationwide, no League Pass tonight!)
Listen: 750 AM The Game (Portland) | NBA Audio League Pass (Free)

The usual rules apply:

1. No swearing | 2. No pictures | 3. Be Nice!
4. Don't discuss unofficial game streaming

And, of course, have fun. Go Blazers! -- Tim

I turned on Chuckerbation on TNT,

and a basketball game broke out.

Seriously, TNT isn’t even about the game, they just blab their opinions about the teams and what they need to do. It’s nauseating. If NBA action is so “fantastic”, why do they talk over it like it’s a cheap B movie? Horrible marketing. Barkely sucks.

You gotta love an ex-player who let himself go who knows the game, is pretty intellegent, and has solid takes… He also doesn’t give a crap about who he ticks off, so you always know he says what he thinks..

Fouls to the bigs determine the game.

Felton has a hard time finishing without defenders there. Bynum and Gasol make it even harder. Blazers have no backup to deal with Bynum. Lakers aren’t much deeper up front. If it’s close I give Kobe the edge. Interesting matchup.

He's been solid, considering he had to play out of position for 4 games

I dunno though. I think he’s getting lazy. He’s got top-5 NBA talent, yet there have been times recently where he looks like he’s between 10-15. Still great, but I think he’s capable of more.

by Berkeley on Jan 5, 2012 7:28 PM PST up reply actions

Had a feeling

I haven’t heard about any progress.

I did contact the Blazers directly to let them know about CenturyLink, but I know there isn’t an immediate fix. (I haven’t heard what they can do yet). Have you given CenturyLink a call to let them know your location isn’t being listed properly? Honestly, I’m not sure they’ll fix it, but they should at least know.

by Timmay! on Jan 5, 2012 7:30 PM PST up reply actions

I filled out the form on the Blazer website on Sunday...

…regarding the same issue. I got an email back on Tuesday that said:

“Looks like you live in the approved territory…Sometimes internet providers route people to larger population areas and the streaming programs believe you live there, instead of your actual address. If you are still not able to view, can you please visit the website below and let me know where it is said you are located? ”http://whatismyipaddress.com/" target="_blank">http://whatismyipaddress.com/"

I replied on Tuesday that my IP address says I am in Eugene, but that I don’t live in Eugene, and that my zip code is approved. I haven’t heard back from the Blazers since.

by kyjo57 on Jan 5, 2012 7:35 PM PST up reply actions

I also sent your geo info to the Blazers front office

I got a thanks back, because I specifically singled out CenturyLink in the mail. I’m not sure if that info has trickled down to the staff that replies to the form, but in general I hope they’re working on it.

I don’t think they can get CenturyLink to fix this (the Blazers don’t have that power of course), but I’m hoping they’re working on an alternative.

by Timmay! on Jan 5, 2012 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, that sounds like the exact message I got too

and I sent them a copy of the IP data and no response since.
I am just thinking, if your zip is good, they should enable the IP.
Hope they come through.

Somewhere Michael Jordan is smiling at Gerald Wallace Blazer highlights.

by Berkeley on Jan 5, 2012 7:45 PM PST up reply actions

Thing is, the zip isn't representative of your cable company

One zip can have multiple cable company. So by approving your zip, they’re saying at least one cable company in that zip doesn’t offer CSN. Then they pinpoint it by ISP.

I kinda wish they’d go straight to IP, or explain it better to prevent the confusion.

Hahaha they're probably checking the crowd for reaction shots

I used to do that when I did camera work for sporting broadcasts. I probably would have never thought about my random camera work being televised on the internet…

She was walking across the court, amongst a bunch of people walking around randomly and he was following her perfectly.

She even suddenly stopped and walked backwards and the camera followed perfectly. Never let her get behind the graphic that was up on the screen either.

Hey I don't mean to hijack the thread...

But since there’s about 25 minutes till gametime I thought I ask a question that has nothing to do with the Blazers.

This summer I am coming to Portland for five days to see the city (plus Seattle), its culture and to see the Portland Timbers play as well. Now I want to come up the week of May 5th because that’s when play the MLS team i’m a supporter of the Columbus Crew but i’m a bit weary of going them because of the weather. How is the weather during that time of the year?

I ask this because two years ago I went to Seattle during that time of the year to watch the Crew play the Sounders and it was 51 degrees, freezing and raining abit. Now I know Portland and Seattle have two different climates but there both part of the Pacific NW and I just want to make sure because I have saved up well over a grand for over a year for this trip and I don’t want to fly out there and be cold for an entire week you know.

Another question, when I go out there i’ll be seeing alot of the main attractions in Washington Park and the main way to get around is to take the shuttle which runs during the summer. But my question is does it start running in May.

I’m sorry if these sound like stupid questions or if it sounds like i’m hjacking this thread but the game dosen’t start yet and I thought this would be a good place to ask since most of you guys are from Portland.

As long as it's just a slight chance of rain i'll be cool with that

I just don’t want it to be like when I went to Seattle two years ago around the beginning of summer and it was barely 50 degrees, cold and raining. Plus hopefully when I see the Timbers play there fans are more respectful because I never met a more arrogant bunch of fans than Sounder fans.

You could consider visiting during the Rose Festival in June

Lots of extra activities and a higher likelihood of Sunshine. But it’s REALLY busy.

Like staylost notes, sunshine is never guaranteed here. July was awful this year. But normally July’s a decent time to visit.

Well July's a good time for me

Because the Timbers play on a Saturday night (28th) and the Mariners are playing on a Sunday afternoon (29th). But i’m not just coming for sports. I’m also coming to see everything in Washington Park, the Chinese garden, the various parks in the cities just to name a few things.

A weekend trip to Seattle is an easy one usually. Plan for 3 hours in clear traffic with one short stop.

I’ve done the Blazers/Mariners/Blazers trip up to the Northwest before. No too tough.

by Timmay! on Jan 5, 2012 7:47 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not driving at all...

I’m taking Amtrak to Seattle. In fact that’s one of the reason why i’m coming to Portland because the mass transit is so great with buses, MAX and the streetcar that you can get to anywhere in the city with it. It’s quite impressive if you ask me.

The NBA has GOT to do something about how long it takes to finish the end of the game...

I propose no more than 1 timeout allowed per team in the last two minutes.. This is ridiculous, I’ve read this whole blog when it said 4:00 left on the game…

But.. it did give me a chance to say – GO BLAZERS!

Crazy... (not you, the TNT stuff)

First of all, who thinks more commercials = higher ratings??
Secondly, who thinks a game that takes a half hour to play 5 minutes leads to higher ratings?
Thirdly, who thinks that keeping fans of game 2 watching a lousy game 1 ending increases ratings?

Lot of dumb people in this world.. more in television and sports than most professions…
