Gameday Open Thread: Lakers vs. Blazers
Let the rivalry begin anew. Tonight, the Los Angeles Lakers come to town to play the Portland Trail Blazers (Late tip-off! ~7:45pm). We all know the Lakers dislike playing in Portland, and the Blazers would love to foster that attitude. What do you expect to see tonight?
Injury report: All's quiet.

I turned on Chuckerbation on TNT,
and a basketball game broke out.
Seriously, TNT isn’t even about the game, they just blab their opinions about the teams and what they need to do. It’s nauseating. If NBA action is so “fantastic”, why do they talk over it like it’s a cheap B movie? Horrible marketing. Barkely sucks.

It's entertaining
And Barkley likes the Blazers.
Oh come on, Chuck is fun!
You gotta love an ex-player who let himself go who knows the game, is pretty intellegent, and has solid takes… He also doesn’t give a crap about who he ticks off, so you always know he says what he thinks..
I, for one, find that pretty refreshing these days, even if I don’t always agree with him…
I’ll stop FF’ing to listen to the Round Mound of Rebound! (And I hated the Sixers!)

I hope the announcers on TNT are more focused on Blazer game than they are for this Miami/Atlanta game. They are just talking over it (not that I blame them, it is really boring).

Fouls to the bigs determine the game.
Felton has a hard time finishing without defenders there. Bynum and Gasol make it even harder. Blazers have no backup to deal with Bynum. Lakers aren’t much deeper up front. If it’s close I give Kobe the edge. Interesting matchup.

question: has anyone on CenturyTell had any progress
with being able to get the Blazers stream to work.
I got an email saying I should be able to get it (zip code ok), but no change – still says out of area. I sent them requested error message and IP data days ago….
Somewhere Michael Jordan is smiling at Gerald Wallace Blazer highlights.
Had a feeling
I haven’t heard about any progress.
I did contact the Blazers directly to let them know about CenturyLink, but I know there isn’t an immediate fix. (I haven’t heard what they can do yet). Have you given CenturyLink a call to let them know your location isn’t being listed properly? Honestly, I’m not sure they’ll fix it, but they should at least know.
I filled out the form on the Blazer website on Sunday...
…regarding the same issue. I got an email back on Tuesday that said:
“Looks like you live in the approved territory…Sometimes internet providers route people to larger population areas and the streaming programs believe you live there, instead of your actual address. If you are still not able to view, can you please visit the website below and let me know where it is said you are located? ”http://whatismyipaddress.com/" target="_blank">http://whatismyipaddress.com/"
I replied on Tuesday that my IP address says I am in Eugene, but that I don’t live in Eugene, and that my zip code is approved. I haven’t heard back from the Blazers since.
I also sent your geo info to the Blazers front office
I got a thanks back, because I specifically singled out CenturyLink in the mail. I’m not sure if that info has trickled down to the staff that replies to the form, but in general I hope they’re working on it.
I don’t think they can get CenturyLink to fix this (the Blazers don’t have that power of course), but I’m hoping they’re working on an alternative.
yeah, that sounds like the exact message I got too
and I sent them a copy of the IP data and no response since.
I am just thinking, if your zip is good, they should enable the IP.
Hope they come through.
Somewhere Michael Jordan is smiling at Gerald Wallace Blazer highlights.
Thing is, the zip isn't representative of your cable company
One zip can have multiple cable company. So by approving your zip, they’re saying at least one cable company in that zip doesn’t offer CSN. Then they pinpoint it by ISP.
I kinda wish they’d go straight to IP, or explain it better to prevent the confusion.
lol
i just am grateful that you take time to explain stuff about the site to me, I appreciate it.

Hey I don't mean to hijack the thread...
But since there’s about 25 minutes till gametime I thought I ask a question that has nothing to do with the Blazers.
This summer I am coming to Portland for five days to see the city (plus Seattle), its culture and to see the Portland Timbers play as well. Now I want to come up the week of May 5th because that’s when play the MLS team i’m a supporter of the Columbus Crew but i’m a bit weary of going them because of the weather. How is the weather during that time of the year?
I ask this because two years ago I went to Seattle during that time of the year to watch the Crew play the Sounders and it was 51 degrees, freezing and raining abit. Now I know Portland and Seattle have two different climates but there both part of the Pacific NW and I just want to make sure because I have saved up well over a grand for over a year for this trip and I don’t want to fly out there and be cold for an entire week you know.
Another question, when I go out there i’ll be seeing alot of the main attractions in Washington Park and the main way to get around is to take the shuttle which runs during the summer. But my question is does it start running in May.
I’m sorry if these sound like stupid questions or if it sounds like i’m hjacking this thread but the game dosen’t start yet and I thought this would be a good place to ask since most of you guys are from Portland.

Then my second hint would be not to wear Steeler's gear as we despise them...

Bring light clothes that can handle the rain. Don’t bring a coat, but bring a rainjacket. It won’t be cold, especially compared to what you guys can get in Pittsburgh.

Thank God i'm not that much of a football fan
I’m more of a hockey-soccer-basketball type of fan. But i’ll certainly remember all of that.

Bad news, May in Portland could by 80 degrees and sunny or 50 degrees and pouring
It’s so hard to predict. It’s usually the start of warming temperatures, but the weather has been so weird lately.
Well May is not etched in stone
If I don’t go out then, i’ll go out towards the end of July.

As long as it's just a slight chance of rain i'll be cool with that
I just don’t want it to be like when I went to Seattle two years ago around the beginning of summer and it was barely 50 degrees, cold and raining. Plus hopefully when I see the Timbers play there fans are more respectful because I never met a more arrogant bunch of fans than Sounder fans.

You could consider visiting during the Rose Festival in June
Lots of extra activities and a higher likelihood of Sunshine. But it’s REALLY busy.
Like staylost notes, sunshine is never guaranteed here. July was awful this year. But normally July’s a decent time to visit.
Well July's a good time for me
Because the Timbers play on a Saturday night (28th) and the Mariners are playing on a Sunday afternoon (29th). But i’m not just coming for sports. I’m also coming to see everything in Washington Park, the Chinese garden, the various parks in the cities just to name a few things.

A weekend trip to Seattle is an easy one usually. Plan for 3 hours in clear traffic with one short stop.
I’ve done the Blazers/Mariners/Blazers trip up to the Northwest before. No too tough.
I'm not driving at all...
I’m taking Amtrak to Seattle. In fact that’s one of the reason why i’m coming to Portland because the mass transit is so great with buses, MAX and the streetcar that you can get to anywhere in the city with it. It’s quite impressive if you ask me.

Amtrak will take you to a VERY short walk from the stadium, if you're arriving that morning
King Street Station is just down the street from the Park.
Yeah it's about 13 minutes from the stadium if Google is correct

Safeco’s just a short walk down the street.

Blazers getting praise on national tv? Wow. I'm scared now, not used to people expecting this team to be elite.
Remember TNT is a business
and Barkley is an employee.
Along with hyping the Blazers (who happen to be on tap on TNT), he’s also hyped the entire weekly lineup of sitcoms and dramas.

Yeah but that never stopped him before from ignoring this team. He usually just says some back handed comment about
how we have a good coach and that’s it.
I'm not watching TNT, but I can only imagine that Shaq is a huge failure.
What’s the general feeling on him?
I would prefer they go with an analysis who is interested in talking about basketball.

Anyone having trouble getting TNT tonight?
I get a message that the channel should be available shortly. Argh!
Why do I have a feeling that this game is going into overtime and we will miss a huge chunk of the game?
Now you know how we Big 12 basketball fans feel on Monday nights
when we always get the second slot and the Big East games in the first slot go into overtime.

The NBA has GOT to do something about how long it takes to finish the end of the game...
I propose no more than 1 timeout allowed per team in the last two minutes.. This is ridiculous, I’ve read this whole blog when it said 4:00 left on the game…
But.. it did give me a chance to say – GO BLAZERS!
But.. it did give me a chance to say – GO BLAZERS!Blazers 108

It's a TNT thing. The NBA allows for extra commercials and stuff, for ratings
At least that’s what I’ve heard.
Crazy... (not you, the TNT stuff)
First of all, who thinks more commercials = higher ratings??
Secondly, who thinks a game that takes a half hour to play 5 minutes leads to higher ratings?
Thirdly, who thinks that keeping fans of game 2 watching a lousy game 1 ending increases ratings?
Lot of dumb people in this world.. more in television and sports than most professions…
Commercials add length, and a longer game with high ratings is better than a shorter game with the same ratings
So it’s the same rating over a longer period of time, not a higher rating, my bad.
hey are we favored in this game?
I don’t think we should be favored because the Flakers have a really fantastic team. And Kobe Bryant is an All Star.

The Hawks are the same every single year. Solid team that can't even make it to the second round in the East.
They need to go in a drastic new direction. Same players that fail the same way is not working.
