Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

Portland Trail Blazers
Current TR championship odds: 3.7 percent

"TeamRankings.com's Power Ratings have Portland as the third-best team in the West, making them dark horse contenders as is. LaMarcus Aldridge is a bona fide star, but could use some consistent scoring help from the wings. Jamal Crawford was brought in to do that, but his 36.1 FG percentage does far more harm than good.

Needs: Brandon Roy and Greg Oden are clearly missed, because the Blazers' biggest holes are consistent wing scoring and a young big man. Marcus Camby still provides strong defense down low, though, so getting an offensive upgrade at shooting guard might be more important.

Assets: Wesley Matthews and Nic Batum are above-average youngsters who could fit in on many teams.

The trade: Matthews and Camby to Golden State for Monta Ellis and Andris Biedrins

This is a downgrade at center and a worse contract for Portland. To give itself a realistic chance to win, however, Portland needs to take a risk on somebody like Ellis. A little shot-selection coaching and some encouraging on the defensive end would really improve his game, and he has much more scoring talent than Matthews or even Crawford. This trade builds a team that can push the pace with small ball, something with which it already has success.

Ray Allen and J.J. Redick could also add the kind of offense the Trail Blazers need."

I agree with the premise, just not the players

I still think our best bet is to trade Gerald Wallace + Batum or Matthews to get a legit player to put next to LMA. Then we can let Camby and Felton’s contracts expire, and we’ll have some legit cap room to sign a 3rd major piece.

I don’t like Monta Ellis, Ray Allen, or JJ Redick as options. I wonder if we could get someone like Danny Granger or Kevin Martin

Amazing?

I’d amazingly trade BOTH of our SF’s for Granger.

by FPS NorthWest on Jan 31, 2012 7:29 PM PST up reply actions

it's more about value

I think Nic is more valued around the league. Wallace is an asset but a team’s going to want another piece with him for someone legit. Considering we have Wes signed to an affordable contract, I’d say Nic isn’t out of the question

I like KMart

But I think that would cost us Crash, and I don’t know that him that.

Trading for Monta Ellis and Andris Biedrins would sink this team's cap space for years, as well as make ...

sure Portland was a one-and-done playoff team from 2012 through 2014. I mean, c’mon, perpetual mediocrity isn’t the answer. Wait, scratch that, I guess it’s an answer to something. That answer flat-out sucks, though.

Yeah, mediocrity sucks. It SUCKS!!!

i love monta

he’s the third best SG in the league right now, and CAN play point. but getting him and biedrins would kill our capspace for the near future.

but if monta better than anyone we can get this summer with our capspace, you absolutely do this deal.

PHILLY!

SG's that are better than Monta: Wade, Kobe, Iggy, Manu, Eric Gordon, Kevin Martin, Ray Allen,

James Harden, Tony Allen (All-NBA defense+efficient but limited offense beats inefficient offense and no defense everytime), maybe OJ Mayo, maybe Evan Turner, probably Arron Afflalo…..

inefficient offense? his shooting is down this year, but he’s a career 47% shooter from the field.

PHILLY!

In Don Nelson's system.

I know the Blazers are running more but still a differant animal! Steph Curry yes, Ellis NO!

He's prone to some pretty terrible ORtgs, and his TS% is just "meh" for as much as he shoots

His shot selection is also absolutely terrible. He takes too many 3’s for shooting a relatively low percentage, and yet he’s proven himself to be an excellent trick shot, so that comes down to having very little BBIQ.

You got me on uptick in assists in recent years, though

No thx.

Monta is a very good player…but I’m really not sure if that guy is a winner. I could be wrong because he has played for a bad team. Curry is a much ideal player for the blazers, but why would they trade him to us?

On the other hand Ray Allen would be very nice to obtain, but the question is… For what price? Wes and GW for Ray Allen? I’d do that trade…. But would the Boston do it?

I still bank on a push for Nash. I think he’s the easiest to obtain of all the names that’s been tossed around. Fits the mold of win now and keep flexibility later.

by Hoi on Jan 31, 2012 7:41 PM PST via mobile reply actions

...this year.

he’s shooting poorly for some reason.

in 07-08 he had a historical year by shooting 53% from the field. his career FG% is 47%

PHILLY!

Same reason

the rest of the league is shooting poorly.

Monta Ellis

YES!!!I would trade for him in a heartbeat….I dont know who we should give to GS,but either Batum or Wesley or Gerald would be a very good trade…I love Wesley,i love Gerald but in order to get back a tremendous scorer like Monta and have a trio of Monta,Jamal and a better Raymond,i would do it for sure…The fact is that they dont understand that Wesley is a great defender player, not a scorer and that his job is to play hard defense first and score some buckets then…Thats his role,he is a tremendous piece next to a good point guard and a good shooting guard…HE IS NOT A SHOOTING GUARD…Monta Ellis to the Blazers, come on,make it happen!!!

Nate would probably get arrested if he had to coach Monta Ellis

Luke probably would have punched Monta for the way he plays.

I just have a feeling Monta would be a locker room cancer too...

Whether true or not, I’d rather not have this kind of stuff hovering around our roster.

Ellis also once in an interview called himself the third best player in the league after only Kobe and LeBron. That kind of bloated ego is no good for chemistry.

PASS.

^This.

Monta has always come across as a selfish jerk that makes bad decisions. Plus, we still have Jamal Crawford for a while. There just aren’t enough possessions in a basketball game to keep them both satisfied.
