The whole rivalry thing...
Do fans truly hate the Lakers? I mean for real. It seems like every fan has poison sweating out their pores when the word Laker is mentioned. It's like people are reading this and become desperate, trying to ovoid the vomit that ruins their laptops.
I must admit, I too have become a L@ker hater. The thing is, it's because everyone else is doing it. Here is a quote from Wikipedia, " The AFL encourages the building of such rivalries, as a method of increasing publicity for the league". I think it works that way in the NBA too.
I am a true Blazer fan, but don't want to jump on the bandwagon of marketing and acting like a sheep. Yes, I detest Kobe but I think it's silly to hate a team of constantly changing players.

The Lakers
and Shaq, cost us the only ring we have been close to since Drexler. Even if that wasn’t the case. The Lakers are kind of the Lebron James of NBA teams.

Plus an abnormal percentage of Laker fans (and Californians) are dbags.

People are people wherever you go.
I just returned from living in California for five years. Made friends wherever I went. Not a single d-bag in the bunch. After a while, I stopped caring if they rooted for the team that crushed my dreams so many times as a kid. It was then I realized my issues were my own.
Yeah. I've really grown to despise the L*kers
despite only having vague memories of the 2000 series as a kid. Kobe represents a lot of that me-first basketball that I really hate the most out of everything, plus those courtside celebrity fans never cease to anger me with their obnoxiousness. And Andrew Bynum once collapsed gerald wallace’s lung with that flagrant foul.
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
You mean THIS flagrant foul

It could be pent up rage from throwing the lead away, but that was a hard thing to see.
Lol.

Somewhat of a contradiction, so say we?
It’s mostly about hating guys, then hating who the guys play for, and then you later hate guys that end up playing on a team with guys you’ve hated.
I.E. if you hate Kobe and Snaq (yes, Snaq, not Shaq) and the Lakers, then Kobe and Pau with the Lakers, then Metta World Crazy, and then finally Steve Blake, who actually I like since he’s been playing so poorly for a team I detest. Same with Metta, who’s batcrap crazy.
Essentially, I just am not a big fan of Kobe, and hence why myself and so many others don’t like the Lakers. It’s a reverse-bandwagon effect. If everyone likes a team, you have to dislike the team. And the fact remains, more people are probably bandwagon fans of the Lakers than bandwagon haters of the Lakers. If for any reason you like Kobe, then you’re probably a Lakers fan… That goes to say, if Kobe retired and Brandon Roy magically came back to lead a different Lakers team, I’d be a fan.

agree on that
maybe not hate him, but definitely not like him

meh. to me, Brandon Roy rekindled my love for basketball.
whatever he does for the league in the future, I’ll try to witness it, whether with the Blazers or whomever.

The Lakers have a history of d-bag players
…and d-bag fans. They get hype and star calls, favorable schedules, extra home games, etc. I don’t see what’s not to hate.
A picture is worth a thousand words.
A .gif is worth a few more:

Hate isn't a strong enough term.
Do fans truly hate the Lakers? I mean for real.
Yes. I loathe and despise the l@kers from the very bottom of my heart. They are the embodiment of evil and corruption and represent everything that is wrong with this crooked league in charge of the sport i love. (Well not quite everything. They don’t have Clay Bennett) I would tell you in exquisite detail all the facts behind those statements but i honestly don’t trust myself to get out a rant like that without making massive violations of BE’s no profanity rules.
I see from your user profile that you’re a newer fan. Part of the hatred (the fully justified and seething hatred) comes from history. Go back and look at our playoff history from the early 2000s.

Like many have said here already
it has to do with history. Honestly, the actions of Laker fans aren’t much to worry about so much as the history between these two teams. Having been a fan of the Blazers for well over twenty years, I have seen the team frustrated in the playoffs against the Lakers (1991 being the most vivid example, in my mind, as I liked that team so much more than our 2000’s editions).
Yes. To be a Blazer fan, detest the Lakers you must.

The Lakers are...
the team that enjoys the head start, due to their legacy of success, desirable exposure and geographical location. They are the ultimate front-runner. If you are the type that likes to see a great story, you could never love that team. If you are the type that wanted Ralph Macchio to get his ass kicked by that blonde kid in the Karate Kid, then get in line and sign up.

The Lakers
are literally the Yankees of the NBA.
Spoken like a true Beaver :P
I think the parallel is a little stronger with the USC of the PAC conference

Is it a rivalry
if the other team doesnt consider us their rival?
Cause ive never met an LA person who thinks of Portland as a rival, in anyway to be honest.
I live in SF, plenty of laker fans here (especially after that bandwagon severely lightened after 2007).
Seattle on the other hand….RIP. had a great 90s bball chat the other night with a seattlite, that is a good rivalry.

It's pretty much that the lakers are hated by nearly every team in the west
but i’m not sure exactly. we should do a survey of western conference fanbases and see who hates the lakers most. for us it’s pretty bitter because we lost a few championship shots because of them, but i’m sure it’s the same way for the kings, who lost that chance at the ring in 2002, and at least a few others.
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
exactly.
its not a RIVALRY -
we only really ‘win’ in terms of Rose Garden record – even kobe admits this.
but its not like we are fighting for the same place, playing each other in the playoffs year after year, nor are we division rivals.
i just dont see it (the rivalry). How, hate all you want, they are fun to hate.

when you're viewing it from the outside a rivalry needs to go both ways
but as one of the involved parties, I can frankly say that I don’t give a damn whether stupid Laker fans acknowledge it or not. Maybe they should try winning in Portland sometime.
I feel like this rivalry has been one playoff matchup away from flaring back up for a few years now, it just hasn’t happened yet. Maybe this is the year.

What was telling to me
is that MULTIPLE teams have the “BEAT LA” Chant, its everywhere.
its not like they chant anything towards the blazers.
im guessing the Lakers really only see Boston as a ‘true rival’ due to history and the championship count.

maybe the spurs as well
since they’ve battled for domination of the western conference

Like I said, makes no difference to me
Is it a mutually acknowledged and nationally recognized rivalry? Perhaps not. Are they our rivals? Absolutely, unequivocally, and 100%. Therefore, we have the rivalry mentality regardless.
As such, I think I speak for everyone when I say that the Lakers and their fans can all suck it.

when I googled rivalry basketball
a lot of division rivalry came up, but no mention of portland.

Technically it's not really a rivalry
A rivalry requires hate on both sides. And really, it seems that pretty much every non-laker fan hates the lakers. Maybe not as much as we do, but still. I think we are close enough that we get to see their fans on a daily basis, but not close enough that most are automatically already lakers fans. Then again, can you imagine being a clippers fan in LA? Ugh. So who knows.
Truthfully, I don’t hate all the lakers. Ron-Ron is just too hilarious to hate anymore. Pau isn’t bad because often enough it’s obvious that he’s the most important player on the floor. I’m meh on the whole dunk competition. Of course, Kobe and Bynum make up enough for the rest of them. And I’d love to see the Zen Master coach a team without multiple superstars.
Mostly I just hate the media’s bias for the Lakers, and how they can just pick up any superstar that comes along. The Knicks are bad enough just assuming they can get any superstar.

I hate em because
I dont feel like they deserved at least half (and probably more than that) the titles I’ve seen em “win.” Unquestionably faulty officiating led to their titles. They always mysteriously seem to be on the winning end of lopsided trades and they have to worst fans in the league. Its not that they win that makes me hate em. Its the way they “win.”
I'd say...
…a lot of the rivalry is marketing or unreal..BUT….
My strong, strong dislike of The Lakers was born out of childhood. When I was innocent enough to not really know much about marketing and manipulation. I honestly didn’t like them, on a DNA building block of life level.
As I grew and concievably became more sophisticated. Nothing arose to change my desire to hate them, infact the more I discovered about The Lakers, the more I disliked them.
I find the rivalry to be real and valid. I have no desire to join the younger generation that seems to want to find common ground with The Lakers.
Why should we? The Rivalry goes back to the Pacific Division and Walton slamming over Kareem. It was born like some evil forged ring in the fires of an evil volcano.
It’s not that I “Hate” The Lakers….it’s that as a Blazer fan I cannot like them. Ever. I get facial ticks when I think about Mychal Thompson. I don’t know what side he’s on? Is he the chosen one that will bring the opposing camps together? Is he a traitor?
The only time I ever found myself rooting for The Lakers was Lakers vs. Boston when Mychal Thompson played for Los Angeles.
Is it unreal? No it’s real, it’s valid and if I listen carefully to the angels of my better nature? I hear them saying….BEAT LA! BEAT LA!….
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"
