Mahoney: Extra Attention On No Extension For Batum
Rob Mahoney writes on the New York Times' Off The Dribble blog that the Portland Trail Blazers' failure to extend forward Nicolas Batum gets extra scrutiny because of the many roster pieces that could move this summer...
-----------------------------
Batum’s impending restricted free agency wouldn’t be getting as much attention if not for the possibility that Portland might also lose its other combo forward. Gerald Wallace and his representatives made it clear that he wanted no part of a contract extension because of the limitations of the new collective bargaining agreement, seemingly ensuring that Wallace will turn down his $9.5 million player option for the 2012-13 season in order to test the open market for a longer deal.
Regardless, Portland seems to be a great fit for Wallace, and most reports indicate that there is mutual interest from both parties in keeping him there.
The chaos of free agency, however, will undoubtedly test the strength of that interest; Wallace is sure to receive some attractive offers from teams in need of his slashing, rebounding and defensive intensity, and the choice of where to play will be his alone. The Blazers can still offer Wallace a longer, more lucrative deal than any other team, but will they dig deep into their pockets for a player dependent on athleticism and energy as he enters his 30s? And once Wallace has the freedom to choose from a handful of potential landing spots, will Portland’s offer be enough to retain him?

no team will offer
Wallace a long term contract over 10 per. He just doesn’t have that ability or upside anymore. He is most valuable to a team like us who need toughness and defense, or a contender who needs the same, but a contender won’t be able to offer that dollar amount.
This summer...
…is shaping up to be a lot of fun.
Fun like Damiens Birthday Party in the Omen.
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"
Batum is going to the Spurs
I don’t think he really wants to be with the Blazers. I think he is frustrated with Nate and the minutes he is getting with the Blazers. I think he wished the Blazers got Parker, and now that they didn’t he will go play with them. And they need a SG/SF on that team.
I know they probably want him. But they have a younger Wallace/Batum in Kawhi Leonard.
Being a Blazer fan is not exactly healthy.
Rob Mahoney: The new Blogfather?
Rob is a really talented writer and I’m pretty stoked to have him talking about the Blazers on a semi-regular basis, even if it’s not in the print edition of the NYT. He originally came from the Two Man Game, which is a Mavs blog, right?
Can anyone tell me what % of his blog entries are about us? I’m pretty sure it’s more than 1/30th of his total coverage.
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice they're not.
Give Felton a Break?
What fun would that be? Felton is the perfect scapegoat and we need someone to blame.

Sorry Wrong thread
Oh well we can still blame Felton for us losing Batum.

To follow Mahoney's analogy,
Felton IS on probation, for one year. As are Batum and Wallace.
Oops, wrong thread for me, too.
It’s a two-car pileup.

Not sure Wallace is that great a fit.
Law of Logical Argument
Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.
hopefully Batum plays his butt off to earn his next contract.
Does anyone know what the $ value of his would be if he was traded or if the Blazers didn’t match an offer sheet? It would be whatever he is currently earning right?
Seems like the Blazers would match whatever offer and then if they were going to trade him it would leave more $ off the payroll right?
I say sign Batum. Trade Matthews and Felton for a decent point guard. Let Batum play starting shooting guard position.
