Bernard B. 750 the game on Batum
Did anyone hear Bernard B. on 750 the game in about the 1:00 hour? He was talking about Batum, and he was basically saying the Blazers don’t need him, he is a waste of money at 7-9 million, which I don’t really disagree with…That isn’t my point. He said the Blazers acting GM knows what Batum is and that is why he didnt get signed. He basically said Batum is a guy who for his career averages 9 points and 3 boards, and that is what type a player he is. He isn’t worth the money cause of those low averages.
I found it funny that he was using his “career averages” to make his argument and not really acknowledging that he has had better numbers every year he has played (except this year which is still young). So he challenged people to call in and throw “stats” at him that justify him being signed by the Blazers, and they he reiterated that he is a “stat nerd/geek” and the great thing about sports is you can go to the stats to tell the story.
So a caller called in and said, look at his per minute averages, he is scoring more than Gerald Wallace per 36 minutes vs. Gerald Wallace. Then the host dismissed that and said he isn’t tough like Gerald Wallace, Batum is soft, blah blah blah.
The then next caller called up and said look at Batum’s true shooting percentage, he is the best on the team. Then the host and the co-host? Looked up the stat and sure enough Batum was #1…but then they looked at who was #2, #3, #4 in that stat and it was like Kurt Thomas, Craig Smith, and Chris Johnson (not sure of the exact order) and they dismissed that point by saying “What should the Blazers do start Chris Johnson and Craig Smith over Camby and Aldridge, too?” These hosts were just total garbage, it was really frustrating working and hearing these clowns on the radio. Why did they just not filter the true shooting percentage to guys who play at least 20 minutes a night?
And you guys didn’t like the Hawk at the noon hour, he was better than this dude.
He went on to conclude that if someone offers the Blazers a lottery pick for Batum he would take that all day. Would you be happy with a lottery pick for Batum? I sure wouldn't be...well unless it was like a for sure top 3 pick, but the lottery system is never for sure.

Oh and his other brilliant point
was Nate doesnt need to play him anymore, he is playing him just the right amount of minutes cause he is getting the same production from him in 24 minutes this year, as he was getting from him in 31ish minutes last year. He never came to the conclusion that maybe Nic would average better than last year if he got the same minutes as last year. He more or less made it sound like he bottoms out after 24 minutes production wise.
I really want to see Nic get 30+ mpg

I like Batum better for the future
But right now Wallace is without question the better player.
Actually
Wallace may not be the better player. Take a look at this guy on the road. Add in his history of injuries and then look at his price tag. He was hot early and has crashed back to earth. He is 1 or 2 years from being over the hill especially with his style of play. We are simply making a huge mistake because everyone likes the dudes attitude. Right now batum is as good or better then two starters and the 6th man. He doesn’t get play because Nate is bias and simple slow.
This
GW is a slightly better defender vs physical sf, but a slightly worse defender against quicker players (Nic can actually guard pg/sg as well as softer PFs). Nic is a much better shooter, is several years younger (about 9 years if you consider GW’s impending body breakdown), and is far more efficient offensively. As the author stated, nic’s per 36 stats are almost better than GW already (depending on what you weigh most heavily). with GW’s inability to play on the road and his lack of pure skills (he gets by on effort/athletic ability), and the fact he will be broken down in 2-3 years should be reason enough to not commit to him long-term. They should have just paid Nic $7-$9 per year (he is better than wesley and should be paid accordingly) and he would have been a happy camper. Instead he will go out into a weak SF pool and get a much better offer (the Nugs just paid Galinari $10.5/yr!!). If the blazers let nic walk in order to resign GW, then they are making a huge mistake. GW is at best a #3-#4 option, which is about what Nic is already, so why would you pay GW $11-$14/yr when you can get a comparable (IMO better) player for $7-$9/yr?

The Game sucks raw eggs.
Station management is clearly clueless — I’m surprised you can still hear them after they sunk to the bottom of the ocean. I doubt they will ever resurface… My greatest hope is that Cantzano finds Davey Jones’ locker and can’t swim out.
stop listening to the game after Wheels left
1080 The Fan is much better specially at 3pm and about the Batum thing, he and Wallace are about the same they just give you different things. If they could start Batum at the two or play him more with Wallace the team would look a lot better. the stats don’t tell the whole story when Crawford chucks the ball every chance he gets.

Wallace is way better than Batum right now.
We lose on the road because Wallace doesn’t play well on the road. You think we’d win AT ALL if Wallace weren’t here? Or if we dumped him for an overpaid mediocre player and marginal upgrade at another position, e.g. Okafor?
I really like Batum. If we could get the right player for Wallace (e.g. Josh Smith or Anderson Varejao), we could start Nic, and we would probably be improved. But, if we could get a lottery pick in this years super deep draft for Nic, the FO would be stupid not to do it in a heart beat.

do you think we could get a lottery pick for Wes or a good back up 3
and start Batum at the Two

I have no idea what we could get for Matthews
I assume we’d probably have to take back a bad contract in addition to Wes to get a lotto pick. But this is a deep draft, so don’t expect there to be a whole lot of lottery picks moved for just players. You’re more likely to see, say, teams that are short on top-end talent moving a couple picks to slide up, with teams that need depth moving a high pick to get a couple cheaper guys further down.
We could easily get a decent back-up 3 for him, but he’s already a decent back-up 2-3, so I doubt anything we get for just Wesley would be any better than a lateral move. Chicago might give up Ronnie Brewer for him.
But starting Nic at the 2 is not a great idea. I agree that he needs a bigger role, but that needs to come out of reduced minutes for Jamal Crawford and additional rest for Wallace and Aldridge.

Have you ever heard a nich – olas Bat – um chant in the rose garden, have you ever seen him dive for a loose ball, Has he ever taken a charge?…. My point is that he has the potential to do great things but the drive of a non- competitior. I’m sorry but Batum is not better than Crash. There is a reason Crash starts.

yes
I’ve seen Nic dive on the floor for a loose ball on several occasions, and he takes a charge every other game or so.

The other day he mentioned how the Blazers should follow the Grizzlies lead and build through the draft.
The Grizzlies, who of course drafted 4 people in their ten man rotation.

Agree.
Last year, John Lund Show was my favorite radio show. And I miss it.
I don’t know why Dave Smith was dismissed, but at least he always offered an interesting perspective to the discussed topics. Now I prefer to fill the time from noon to 3 PM with something else.
The truth is that many of the radio hosts don’t have greater knowledge on sport than the average fan.
When they know less than you do, you can't give anything they say any credit.
I agree with you.
Once I hear some moronic take on the Blazers, it’s already checkmate.

750 The Game has gone downhill and fast.
Never thought I’d say this, but Dave Smith is better than what they replaced him with even if he was offensive and his act was tired after a week. That’s coming from someone who really disliked the guy all around.
750 really needs to stop recruiting from amongst their obviously weak crop of interns to host shows. If they can’t afford to keep anyone (Gavin Dawson, Lund, Wheels or Jaynes) and can’t afford to even stay on the FM dial, which was supposedly the whole point of the station at the beginning, then they might as well fold it up.
Chad Doing and John Strong are the only tolerable hosts, but they’re riding Chad into the ground and John Strong isn’t on nearly as much as he used to be now that he’s working for the Timbers. No one on that station is compelling anymore.

The best summary of the game yet!!
Couldn’t agree more—-best summary of the game and it’s situation I’ve ever seen.

I agree about Chad being the lone bright spot on a dying station...
But I have no interest in listening to soccer on the radio.
The sad thing is that the longer this thread is, the more that The Game (and any other media outlet) would look at it as evidence that this was a great show because it is so “compelling and provocative!!!”.
They are just doing what sells. Soap operas for men.

Seriously bad
After noon and Brian Berger the game is garbage. I used to hate Chad but he has grown on me recently. The noon spot has been brutal ever since Kenny Vance left. He was a goof ball but was actually pretty insightful. The man cave, if it even is still on, is AWFUL. I’d rather hear the Hawk.
As much as I hate to admit that canzano was right about the switch over to AM (because I can’t stand him either) it really has gone down hill since then.
