Because of the strains of this years schedule, it is hard to make accurate comparisons of teams—especially making broad generalities like “contender or pretender.” However, as long as we get in the playoffs, I give this team a great chance against anyone else in the Western Conference.

I have learned to value ESPN commentators’ opinions very low. They blow everything (both struggles and hot streaks) way out of proportion.

Bottom line, I want to see three things from this team during the regular season: (1) avoid serious injuries by managing minutes and playing smart, (2) learn the new running system so we can be more effective later in the season, and (3) leave some gas in the tank by utilizing the bench.

If we do these three things, I say Portland is a legitimate contender.
