Berger: Batum Negotiations Continue, "Deal Not Close"
Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reports...
--------------------
Discussions continue between the Blazers and Nicolas Batum's agent, Bouna Ndiaye, on an extension, but deal not close, sources say.
--------------------
The Blazers were reportedly set to meet with Ndiaye on Monday to continue their negotiations. The two sides face a Wednesday deadline to reach a deal.
Update: Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com reports that Batum said on Monday that meetings will take place Monday night and Tuesday.

Don't lose Batum
This is painful, but we aren’t close enough to Western Conference Championship form to gamble on Gerald staying healthy while we develop. Do what it takes to sign Nico, treat Gerald as kindly as possible while trading for another impact player. Owwwww…..
They wouldn't lose Batum if negotiations fail
He just goes to restricted free agency, and the team can match any offer.
agree
but it does depend on what Nic is asking 9+ mil gets to be a little steep, and I don’t think he would break 9 mil in the open market…unless some team misses out on a few guys and offers him big to save face and not miss again

true
that’s why they gotta deal fair and square now…use that 5th year if you have to…or just trade the guy.
If they lose him without getting anything in return…oh boy, this team’s management…they make it tough to be fan sometimes

Predictable
Batum knows that the market for his services this offseason will be big. He’s not going to accept what the Blazers probably consider a fair value for his services, because he knows someone is going to offer him a borderline crazy number.
won't be as huge as people think... there are a ton of FA's out there, and a really good draft class
And he better do more than disappear if he wants those offers
Sounds like we'll end up overpaying
Better prove your worth Nico. Cruddy defense and 5/15 shooting against a terrible Detroit team…not going to cut it if you’re asking 8 mil+
Can’t do a semi-rebuild by overpaying role players.
how do you figure?
if we were going to overpay i’d imagine we’d have already extended him. the team looks like they are willing to let him reach RFA, i think they are trying to avoide overpaying him.
just a feeling
if he goes to RFA we’ll probably definitely overpay for him to keep him. I guess it really depends on whether you think they will actually let him go or they will actually extend him for something reasonable.
there are a bunch of teams
with cash to burn this year…who wouldn’t love a wing that can defend 3 positions has a great attitude, can shoot and rebound and is under 25…he makes 8+ easy this offseason.

Makes you realize
what a deal Matthews is for this team…his real value is probably 50% or better than what he is making now.

Still can't afford to overpay role players
Detroit game was an example. Kings game might have been some family trouble.
I don’t like the “doesn’t know his role” “doesn’t get enough minutes” “guys won’t pass him the ball” excuses among others. Nico has potential and he’s still young but he’s not a rookie anymore. He shouldn’t act like one.
Obviously just my opinion and I know I’ll probably get flamed for it.

Nic, you didn't help your case tonight
Trust and look for each other

funny...
they actually do though…they have Claver in waiting who is similiar to Nic in that he is tall defensive minded and a shooter…in fact, he may be better suited to a Nate run team in that his skill set is limited which nate seems to like.

I haven't seen much of him... is he really that promising?
If he is and is going to come over in a year or two. Then I completely believe they will trade batum and keep wallace. Think about if claver comes over next year, he will be in a rookie contract, and cheap. We can afford then to keep wallace around and bring claver along, then when its time for him to be resigned wallace will be ready to retire. Plus we can get whatever we can for Nico.
I'd be disappointed if they don't extend him
I would rather see them re-sign Batum than Wallace. Maybe its just cause he’s younger, less injury prone, and the fact that I like me some shooters!! or it could be that game winner on the spurs last season. either way SIGN HIM!
