Lowe: Praising Portland's Early Guard Action
Zach Lowe of SI.com praises Portland's early in the shot clock guard movement.
----------------------------------
7. Portland’s early guard-guard screening action
It’s such a simple thing, but it works, in part because of the fast pace at which Portland is playing: One Blazer guard, normally Raymond Felton, will speed-dribble the ball up the sideline directly at another guard stationed near the three-point line on the wing. When they meet, Felton will either hand the ball off and cut to the hoop off his teammate’s screen, or keep his dribble going toward the corner, using the other guard for a ball screen.
You’d be surprised how much chaos this can cause defenses. They either switch themselves into a less favorable matchup or run the risk of losing the ball-handler around the screen. And since Portland’s guards are pushing the pace, there aren’t any big men clogging the lane when this initial action happens on the sideline. If Felton can turn the corner, he’ll often have a clear path to the rim. It’s another funky way in which a team lacking perimeter shot creators can nonetheless create shots.

I was pretty shocked to see praise of the guard play.
Cool observation though.
He isn't praising the guards, if anything he's complimenting Nate.

Yeah, it was a dig at the subpar talent level of the guards if anything.

"I Am Mine"
I Saw this
it was under his ‘likes and dislikes section’ which can be difficult to discern if he LIKES it or DOESNT.
i had to read this a few times to figure out if he was being sarcastic. at first i just pictured felton running to the corner out of control (perhaps falling or dribbling off his shoe), and then frantically giving the ball to Jamal crawford, or Wesley, who will pull up an ill advised mid range jumper with 17 to go on the shotclock.
now reading it over, he definitely likes our guard play., lets just hope our shooting improves from deep.

Please note one important point here...
He is not praising the ability of the guards to make the shots they gain by using this strategy.
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice they're not.

They consistently miss wide open shots but they look good doing it
Nice to know

Next up for praisings:
1. Our depth at center
2. Our ability to develop young PGs
and 3. “Most Organized Front Office Award!”
I don't always root for an NBA franchise, but when I do, I prefer the Portland Trail Blazers.
I've noticed the same thing
There is more ball movement, early offense exploration, and screens set in transition which is resulting in more open looks. The fact that Felton, and Crawford are both shooting sub 40 is Matthews is barely above 40 is even scarier when you consider that they are getting better looks than Roy, Miller, Matthews and Rudy did last season.
yeah definitely getting better shots
as long as Jamal doesn’t have the ball. If our guys could shoot straight we’d be near undefeated.
I uploaded a couple examples of what Lowe is seeing to youtube.
Synergy is great. Have had it for 3 years now. I used to get League pass too but the prices this year despite the short season turned me off.
Games get archived pretty quickly (normally within an hour or so after the game is over), you get the stat tracking, plus you can get through games pretty quickly with all the stoppages edited out for you. But because it’s a mash up of short clips it’s not quite the same.
I just heard Mike Rice saying "And that was a good look, too."
