If not Felton...
Then who.
I read a lot about Felton's skill set and while he have been frustrating at times this season he is still playing like a starting pg in this league. He isn't an all-star, but he can play the position and he isn't (historically at least) a bad shooter.
Sure Andre Miller is out there, and Jose Calderon could probably be had...but can you really build a team around a old guy or a guy who doesn't play defense.
Felton is far from perfect, and his 4th quarters are an adventure...I just don't know what kind of an improvement you could get...realistically.
For better or worse, he might be the guy for a while

that's obvious, at least for this season
though if we could have him for a reasonable contract over the next couple seasons, I wouldn’t be opposed. Somewhere in the $6-7 million dollar a year contract for 3-4 years, maybe $28 million for 4 years with a team option the last year.
My belief is the longer he’s around the team the more he’ll improve.

it sucks that portland is a small market team. If not, we could be thinking of getting deron williams next season...
dont extend marcus camby, gerald wallace, ray felton....i think we should have enough cap space for deron.
we'll have enough but so will Dallas which is where Deron williams

incomplete thought green jeans?
it’s not a lock by any means that Deron is going to Dallas. they have their own problems.

he probably meant to finish that with "where deron williams is from"
since he’s a dallas native, along with the fact that dallas has a lot of contracts expiring, an elite power forward, and a rich and enthusiastic owner, dallas is considered the favorite.
well, i guess we also have a lot of contracts expiring, an all-nba power forward (who’s also a lot younger), and rich owner. but dallas’s management has proven that they can build a championship team, while our roster isn’t producing very well for the amount we’re paying.
defensively IMO Felton and Calderon are about the same

If the guy can make that stupid face on more than 15% of his attempts without turning it over...

Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Nah, Jose Calderon is a sieve on D. He can't guard a chair.
The advantages Calderon has are his superb assist-to-turnover ratio and 3PT shooting.

whats Feltons advantages
I like Calderon’s and his defense isn’t bad compare to every other point guard in the league. only really Rondo and Paul should be called a good defenders at the point.

Yeah, but Josie's just bad
Still, he’d be an upgrade over Felton if it weren’t for that contract. I’d be down with trading for him next season, though. He’ll be an EC ;) I’d just rather not have an immovable contract on the books for now.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Calderon has his strengths, but also his weaknesses.
STRENGTHS
1. Superb Assist-to-Turnover Ratio.
2. Efficient Shooter.
WEAKNESSES
1. Grade F Defense.
2. Overpriced Salary.
"I Am Mine"
Add Ricky to that list:
That was published 1-11-2012. In his last 8 games he has a total of 30 steals . According to the Wolves broadcast commentators, Ricky is the NBA player who takes the most charges in the NBA (I think they said 14 charges).
Rubio is a very smart player.
I found it funny when many fans, a lot of Portland fans, thought his defense was bad like Rudy or Sergio. He was known as a good defender in Spain, and it looks like that type of basketball intelligence transferred with him.
I think Rubio will be one of those players that basic stats hate and advanced stats love. Some fans will point to his lack of many 20+ point games and say he is below average for an NBA guard, others will look at wins added and point differential and say that he is a top 5 NBA guard.
Here I thought he wasn't going to be any good
Now, he looks like the best PG out of the last 3 drafts.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Kyrie Irving is having a pretty amazing rookie season as well
but Rubio has such a unique set of skills and is just so creative with the ball that Irving gets ignored.
Rubio's defensive impact makes him way better than Irving,
considering their offensive numbers are pretty similar.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
If you ignore shooting and scoring their numbers are similar
just so different. Irving has a super high usage , but at 59 TS, definitely should be taking a lot of shots. Rubio’s been a pretty awful shooter outside of threes (Irving still shooting better from downtown), but the assists make up for it. Factoring defense probably makes it a wash, but the numbers are definitely favoring Irving these days.
I could not agree with you more, ripcitymilehigh! In fact I gave you a rec!
I think it is time for Blazers fans to Get The Heck Off Felton’s Case!!!!!!
The way I see it he has been improving and I think that will continue. Wont you Felton haters feel silly when at some point later in the season he wins you over?
Stop trying to get rid of the best shot we have at having a decent point guard, that Nate will trust enough to give consistent starter minutes to. Let’s face it there may be no harder job in all of the NBA than playing point guard for Nate!
/end rant
LET THE LAMONSTER ERA BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Andre Miller is way better
We oughta cut Felton and trade Crawford for Dre. that makes sense now. sad.
Ok I changed my signature. Do you like it better now?
Would Nash come to Portland?
I don’t care how bad his defense is, he would make the Blazers one of the best offensive teams in the league. Nash is one of the best shooters in the league. He is one of the best passers and he would not command tons of money. Just a thought. If the Blazers actually had a point guard who could hit a three it would change the dynamics of the team completely.
Hey, there's a thought...Nolan Smith.
Didn’t he play at Duke last year? I wonder what we’d have to give up to get him?

oohh good one
ive totally forgotten about this dude. he was huge against us in 09 when he tore apart blake.
PHILLY!
I think its been all down hill for him since then
except for the occasional good game in china; I remember reading about him being a headcase

Good Question
I’ve kind of given up on the Blazers finding that premier point guard. For the most part of my life a a fan (since the 1990 NBA finals), the Blazers have always seemed to be in search of that next great point guard more than any other position. Strickland had a great run after Porter, and in my mind, was the best overall point guard that I have seen play for them.
Following were the Kenny Anderson and Rumeal Robinson years… nothing fantastic there. Then came the great Oregon hope… Stoudamire. We all watched several painful years of mediocre shooting, cringe-worthy A/T ratios, and defense leaving a lot to be desired all in the hopes that he would turn it around. At best, he turned into a decent support player as opposed to someone who ever led the team.
After a failed experiment with McGinnis, we drudged through a band of misfits with the highlights being Steve Blake, Telfair, and Steve Blake again. Andre gave us a couple of solid, very efficient years, but clearly wasn’t able to put us over the edge.
Felton’s early performance has been disappointing and I’m not convinced he’s the guy for this team. I don’t think the Blazers have any chance of grabbing one of the the “big two” in Williams or Paul. I also think a trade for Rondo is highly unlikely, although I think he’d be a perfect fit for the Blazers.
Nash would be interesting however very expensive for a very short period of time. If the Blazers were one player away from a championship, I’d say go for it, but they’re not. They’re more like 3 or 4 players away from the Finals.
Not a huge Calderon fan for the same reasons people have discussed above. He would also be quite expensive and isn’t exactly a spring chicken.
I’ve talked (at great length) about DJ Augustin who has the benefit of being readily available, and relatively cheap. He’s 3 years younger then Felton and playing at a much higher level currently. Is he the ultimate answer? Probably not, but better than the current options.
Aaron Brooks is decent, but probably looks to shoot a bit more than I’d want in a point guard. Same with Jack, although he seems to becoming more of a legit point guard.
I’d give up quite a bit to get Rondo on this team. If a trade can’t be worked out, I’d then go for Augustin and a premier center via free agency.
I agree with you on all points but one...
Calderon IS a spring chicken.

Devin Harris
Could’ve had him at the last deadline if not for that pesky Deron deal.

i wouldn't say that
Kendall Marshall and Jordan Taylor. their not number one over all picks but both could start in the NBA
by Daddygr33nJeans on Jan 23, 2012 11:39 AM PST up reply actions
well, we probably wouldn't have to trade up much to get either of them
unless a lottery team with a point guard need reaches for them.
some pg prospects that i like in order of most fav to least fav:
deron (’nuf said) indy will have to pay both him and hibbert, and they might let him go, even if he’s from indy)
-george hill (rfa this summer
dj augustin (rfa this summer, on the verge of breaking out, but CHA might be invested in Kemba)- ideal backup PG)
-kirk hinrich (FA this summer, ATL loves teague)
-nash (FA this summer)
-maynor (might not be available, but i think he’s a starting PG in the league, and OKC is committed to westbrook)
-livingston (produces when given PT
PHILLY!
wow that sucked
stupid strike function:

here are some more names:
Jeff Teague – Love what he is doing in Atlanta, but since they are looking to win now, maybe the young guy is available? Might have to overpay using Wallace, but I would consider it.
I need to second the Maynor rep. I agree he’s a starting guard in this league, does lots of little things very well.
You didn’t mention Ridnour, NW-shoutout, but he can defend and shoot and run a team.
Stuckey would put a lot of pressure on opposing defenses, opening the game for Aldridge. Might not the best fit available, but possibly the biggest talent available.
My biggest favorite… Jrue Holiday. I would love to pair him with Batum and Aldridge. I don’t think Holiday is available at all though.
I think Felton will bounce back here. He's definitely showed signs.
We’ll see. I remember all of the Dre hatters when he first came here too…
"Brandon Roy has done this before."
Some players get the love immediatly
but not pgs in portland it seems
