Blazers F LaMarcus Aldridge Still 6th Among West Forwards For All-Star Voting
As noted two weeks ago, six members of the Portland Trail Blazers appear on the 2012 NBA All-Star Ballot for selection for the Western Conference team: Guards Raymond Felton and Wesley Matthews, forwards LaMarcus Aldridge, Nicolas Batum and Gerald Wallace, and center Marcus Camby.
The NBA released the first returns last week and Aldridge was the only one of the six Blazers to make it on the list of leaders. Aldridge, who is seeking his first All-Star appearance, started sixth among Western Conference forwards, trailing Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, Dirk Nowitzki, Pau Gasol and Kevin Love.
The NBA released its second round of returns on Thursday and there was no movement on the list. Aldridge is still sixth and the players above him remain in the same order. His vote tally has climbed to more than 188,000.
Here's the list of leaders at the Western Conference forward position.
Forwards: Kevin Durant (OKC) 973,152; Blake Griffin (LAC) 619,913; Dirk Nowitzki (Dal) 354,434; Pau Gasol (LAL) 327,596; Kevin Love (Min) 232,656; LaMarcus Aldridge (Por) 188,829; Tim Duncan (SA) 133,575; Lamar Odom (Dal) 96,080; Metta World Peace (LAL) 63,055; Danilo Gallinari (Den) 59,646.
Here's the list of current All-Star starters based on the first two rounds of voting...
- West: Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, Andrew Bynum
- East: Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard
Click through for the rest of the list of leaders at all positions for both conferences.
Voting continues on NBA.com.

vote for him!!! even though it's dumb and all..it seems like he would appreciate it.
I’ve tried to remember to vote every day..they are really picky this year though..if you vote one day at 5pm they don’t let you vote again the next day till 5pm!!! 24hrs!
Blake Griffin is outplaying LMA...
It’s time to accept that.. I BG makes it as the starter, it’s not a snub, it’s deserved. If LMA wants it bad enough, he’ll start rebounding more and demand the rock. Griffin is posting better stats on a team with more top flight players. I love LMA, but he’s not making it easy on voters to pick him over Griffin.
Disagree entirely
LaMarcus has a much better repertoire and higher skill level than Griffin.
by oregonslee on Jan 19, 2012 12:41 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
That argument is quickly changing
Blake has added a mid range shot to his game that falls quite regularly, and he also seems to be developing some post moves. Give it a year or 2, Blake will be the best PF in the league.
blake may be the best PF in two years, but he's not right now. oddly enough, we're voting for this year's all-stars and not next year's right now
compare their numbers. (higher PER, TS%, WS and lower usage for LMA, those all support my argument so i won’t look at any of the other numbers that don’t…) it’s doesn’t make sense to act like griffin is some sort of unstoppable superstar. every time they meet up, aldridge either exceeds his production or at least plays him straight up.

Just don't bring Kevin Love into that conversation.
His stat line has both LA and Griffin beat.
25.2 PPG/ 14.5 RPG/ EFF +28.07
not too shabby.
Oh but that one we'll use the eye test
I mean, we can mix and match right?
by Batumshakalaka on Jan 19, 2012 1:31 PM PST up reply actions
pretty much
Don’t forget about record, too, except when comparing Griffin and Lamarcus, after all.
i can't deny kevin love as a talented player who puts up ridiculous stats
i’d say the eye test supports lamarcus over griffin and love. kevin love’s numbers are elite and he’s got a skill set most nba players should envy, but i’m tired of typing so much so i’ll just sum it up as LMA > griffin & love based on everything except the things that say otherwise, which are clearly less reliable for a variety of reasons

Kevin Love is smart...
he added a 3 pt shot to his game knowing that most PF won’t come out to guard him that far away from the basket.
Go to Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company.
Kevin Love always had good range
and took a good amount of 3’s while at UCLA.

Aldridge is of the mindset
That if you just lead a virtuous life, the rebounds will come to you. By the way, and someone correct me if I’m wrong here, but I thought the bible says you are not to deface your body – say with gigantic religious tattoos.
by heybabydrinkyourmilk on Jan 19, 2012 6:21 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
I just had an argument about this
with a “Bible thumper”. I should say I am a Christian, yet not hardcore into the whole religion thing. Though it drives me nuts when I see people talking about how religious they are and live 100% by the Bible but only follow the things they choose to.
I'm pretty sure God pays more attention to what's inside, than outside...
Maybe if you keep trying, you’ll eventually be able to prove that LaMarcus is a witch and should be burned. ;)
If it didn't matter I don't think they would have put it in the book
It appears (to me at least) to be worth about two or three rebounds per.

That's part of the Deuteronomic law of the nation of Israel.
They’re found in the book Deuteronomy and are part of the Old Testament, or “law” or “Torah” (first 5 books of the OT). There’s all sorts of interesting ‘laws’ in there. We can learn a lot from them, especially the principles behind their application, but Christianity, which, some of the time is actually based on Christ’s teachings, teaches that the “law” was fulfilled with Christ’s mission on earth: to die, as a sacrifice for all, as all of humanity is fallen from the penalty of sin. Paul teaches later in Romans (in exquisite detail) what that means to both jews and gentiles who profess faith in Christ. He’s very detailed.
Come on, let's all hug it out.

I must be missing some context around this?
“You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh on account of the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the LORD.”
by heybabydrinkyourmilk on Jan 19, 2012 7:47 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
The context for the law is early Israel.
Not modern day Israel, mind you, which is a nation state, but rather the first nation of Israel that was delivered from slavery in Egypt and wandered the desert for 40 years.
These laws were not given to other peoples. They were particular to the Jews of this time period, although, certainly, others can choose to follow them if they want.
Paul was both Jewish scholar and a convert to Christianity. As his works explain, modern Christians are not ‘bound’ by “the law”, that is, basically, the books in the OT. They can, however, choose to follow certain statutes if their faith leads them to do so. So ancient Judaism was a religion of laws (although Paul later argues Abraham, as well all other Jews, was justified by his faith and not by “the law”) and Christianity is a matter of faith and conscience.
If someone wants to avoid tattoos (although the text seems to indicate some sort of practice having to do with “the dead”—it certainly doesn’t seem to indite ‘praying hands’ like LMA and Joel’s ink), I believe Paul would simply respond that they should do so if their faith leads them to do so. If they are doing it to please other people they are actually ‘in sin’ though. IE—Following Christ is a matter of faith, which can ‘lead’ many to observe laws, but said laws will never (in fact, have never according to Paul) set any human free from the peril of sin.
Romans explains faith in Christ, and what it means to modern Jews and gentiles alike. 1 Corinthians 8 lays out the principle of conscience in different ‘gray’ issues IMO, in this case, consuming meat in a pagan culture.
But basically, anyone claiming LMA’s tattoos don’t jive with his faith on legal grounds are simply mistaken, unless Lamarcus claims to adhere to the laws of Moses set forth in Deuteronomy.
Come on, let's all hug it out.
by Hipster Olympic Team! on Jan 19, 2012 8:48 PM PST up reply actions
Oh! Also,
I get what you’re saying too. If it’s “in the Bible”, shouldn’t people of the different Bible associated faiths be following it word for word? Well, no, frankly, but I can understand how it seems confusing. Christians are especially confused by it, if it’s any consolation…
Come on, let's all hug it out.

by heybabydrinkyourmilk on Jan 19, 2012 9:27 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
I'm not for Lamarcus getting any rebounds, actually.
He should be taking every shot while everyone tries to get rebounds. I guess we can make exceptions for Nic though…
Come on, let's all hug it out.
by Hipster Olympic Team! on Jan 19, 2012 9:38 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
The defensive rebounds are the ones I feel like he should get more of
It seems that he is either just too slow to react, or.. I don’t know? He doesn’t block out. He always wants to leak out. I mean, if you’re right down there anyway might as well? I have to think that’s what Nate was talking about when he challenged him to get 10 a game. No reason why he shouldn’t get 10.
by heybabydrinkyourmilk on Jan 19, 2012 9:59 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Nate meant LMA should get 10 commandments per game
They’re carved in stone for Pete’s sake. I don’t see rebounds mentioned in the old book.
most of the time he's running to position for offense
unless he’s under the rim already. LMA is an excellent offensive rebounder and I’ve seen him be extraordinary in defensive rebounding too.
Not consistently though and not with consistent effort.
Aldridge doesn't even care enough to block out
Guys just keep on going right around him for those rebounds. Been six years now.

He'll never be even a good defender
Really short standing reach, to go with the fact the he never really seems to care.
Yeah, I mean
Anthony Davis will already be in the league next year, after all.
I don't understand
I always hear stuff like that, and wonder what it really means. BG scores more, rebounds more, defends slightly worse than LMA. What do you mean by “higher skill level”? If you are talking about scoring and rebounding skills, I think that is clearly not the case.
again, i state
compare their numbers. they don’t make a case that lamarcus is a cut above griffin (and he’s not), but it’s bogus to say that blake griffin has ever outplayed lamarcus.
But Blake Griffin does own
the highlight reel. Like it or not. This is a popularity contest and Blake dunks real perty.
that's only because ESPN is

I guess we will have to disagree on that one

"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
exactly
i have no problem with fans wanting to see griffin. the guy can dunk (over the hood of a car…for an ad campaign that somehow wins the dunk contest) but griffin over lamarcus for all-star is not based on stats or talent, that’s all
since never... Allen Iverson or TMac was voted in one year,
it was the popular vote… the player didn’t even deserve to be in the all-star game
Wasn't Yao Ming voted in here recently when he hardly even touched a court?
That said it does help when you have the whole country of China voting for you.
by FPS NorthWest on Jan 19, 2012 8:53 PM PST up reply actions
exactly, again
lamarcus is “not making it easy on voters to pick him over Griffin” because he doesn’t play in LA and he doesn’t have highlight real dunks every game. it has nothing to do with LMA’s play or talent, just like every all-star game voting.
You have to realize though that Blake plays in
a city filled with millions of people and has a backing of millions of tards who jumped on his bandwagon after he side stepped the KIA at the ALL-STAR game last year. Lamarcus has a following of a few million people and there are some who still think he’s soft. He is great, but is only a tid better than what Chris Bosh was when he played for the Raptors. LA needs a second scorer to be legit.
LMA missed 2
that could have put us into OT last night.
He needs to get those "kobe calls" ... He needs to prove/show
to the refs that he is legit superstar/all-star and he deserves those calls. But then again, Roy barely got the “Kobe calls” so, I dunno
B-Roy got plenty of star calls go his way.
He was also a pro at whining to the officials.
"I Am Mine"
I see where you are coming from
but having to dig into advanced stats to support an argument is never a good sign. I think it’s pretty simple. PFs are supposed to rebound well. BG and KL both rebound better than LMA. They also happen to score more. Most fans probably never look past that. They should. They probably don’t.
I don’t think LMA is at his ceiling yet, either, and wouldn’ tconcede BG being better than him in two years either, BTW.
well look at the per-game and per-36, again there is no clear distinction between the two. that’s all my point is. i’m not disparaging blake griffin (okay i am, but i still understand most of the praise) but there’s nothing that has ever occurred on a basketball court or stat sheet that says blake griffin is a better player than lamarcus aldridge.
I think lma is pretty much capped out.

he can make a lot of strides mentally to take it to the next level
but that would be a pleasant surprise
"If I had a dime for every basket I made today, you'd still suck!" - from the book 'John Dies @ the End'
yeah unfortunately
he has the physical tools and skills to be great but it’s really looking like his drive to do so just isn’t there. That’s just a shame.
was he was what he was at the start of last year?
"If I had a dime for every basket I made today, you'd still suck!" - from the book 'John Dies @ the End'
Yeah, I know it was a short stretch, but his monster streak last year was pretty unique
and, unless you’re entirely numbers oriented, kinda shows how much more he’s capable of. It’s like you said above, he could do a lot mentally that would translate to improvements on the floor, but it’d be a pleasant surprise.
But if he did, he wouldn’t be the first big man to do it.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
yeah his ceiling is much higher than he's playing right now
if you discount the evidence that’s telling us his motor won’t get him there.
Been hearing this too often
and with the amount of improvement over the last few seasons, I think it is simply an uninformed statement.
Yet no Dre
and he is having the best season of his career.
I've learned the hard way on this site that surface stats, especially per game stats, don't carry all the weight or tell the whole story
"If I had a dime for every basket I made today, you'd still suck!" - from the book 'John Dies @ the End'
But it's just a popularity contest
As far as stats this is the PER ranking for PF’s:
1 Paul Millsap, UTAH
2 Kevin Love, MIN
3 Ryan Anderson, ORL
4 LaMarcus Aldridge, POR
5 Blake Griffin, LAC
6 Josh Smith, ATL
7 Kris Humphries, NJ
8 Dirk Nowitzki, DAL
9 DeJuan Blair, SA
10 Zach Randolph, MEM
Ask yourself why is Ricky Rubio ahead of Nash, Westbrook and Lowry. Right now Lowry is ranked #2 in PER whereas Rubio is 20th for pgs. It’s the Justin Bieber factor (especially embarrassing for BB fans).
it's ridiculous and the sports media is to blame.
They put a player out and shove him in to the faces of BB watchers everywhere… basically saying, “you must love the Blake Show”.
Even if ESPN faded to dark, LaMarcus Aldridge still wouldn't be marketable to the public at large.
"I Am Mine"
I think he has to help himself
Having guys like Dre and Rudy throwing lobs to him helped a bit. You shouldn’t need some complex support system to want to be great though.
We pay attention to the media.
If we didn’t they would try to figure out what we REALLY like and instantly change their message. Everything is our fault. Everything.

Blake Griffen is talented and hard working and also
gets away with shoving players to box out and has CP3 on his team.
i think part of what a “big” does depends on those who are on the team…able to feed into the post for say…pick and rolls (throw above the waist please Felton) and even lobs.
And coaching…pass the ball out to a 3 pt threat..oh…that would be the guy on the BENCH…Batum. so..no that won’t work…
LMA is very talented and works very hard also. It would be nice to see others around him who are able to deliver and bring out his best.
I would agree
excepting defense, Blake has earned it.
Sad, but...
Maybe it will make him hungrier for what really matters, a championship.
"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
Not sad IMO
He won’t be a starter, but I would be SHOCKED if the coaches don’t vote him in this year.
The coaches probably wont... they'll over look him again and again... he's needs to go into
a beast mode… or just stop trying to be a half way all-star and either play to be one or play to win a championship
I agree
I’d also be shocked if LMA didn’t get put on
"If I had a dime for every basket I made today, you'd still suck!" - from the book 'John Dies @ the End'
Maybe make your 4th quarter free throws
and votes will start pouring in.
Just a suggestion…..
we can still win........
He's made plenty of his free throws.
And he is not fading in the 4th quarter. He made the score tying bucket at the end of the game in Houston…to put it into overtime.
All-Star voting is a joke...
Hedo Turkoglu, Jose Calderon, JOEL ANTHONY, Metta World Peace, Marcin Gortat…
I wouldn’t even want that as a starting 5 on an NBA team, let alone an All Star team!
i just stopped voting after the 2nd day
coming into this season we knew who the fans wanted on the all-star team. if aldridge wants to be an all-star, he’s got to impress the coaches. he knows that and it fits with his personality (no ad campaign like bosh or love, both who did a good job). being an all-star is an honor for any of the players, but brandon roy even got tired of it and just wanted to rest. lamarcus talks about resting all the time, so let’s just worry about all-NBA and not even bother with the waste of time that is all-star weekend.
just vote! Figure it will make LaMarcus feel good if nothing else. The guy is pretty humble.
He can’t even hear how loud the RG gets when his name is announced because of that stupid LTRAIN noise that covers the sound of the applause.
He was shocked at the applause he got once when he spoke to the crowd before a game..and said so…well he gets that applause every time he steps onto the court when they are announcing his name….YET CAN’T HEAR IT.
Anyway, I say vote for the guy. He’s a great player, son, father..teammate.
Yes, but....
the way the NBA lets you vote as many times as you want to is just plain bogus. Some of these fans must have nothing to do but vote dozens of times for their favorite player. The vote totals are completely meaningless (just like Stern’s NBA, I’m afraid). I assume the NBA has this silly voting system to try to whip up fan excitement and to inflate the number of votes to make it look like the NBA has a lot of followers. Players should either vote each other in or let the coaches do it…
RCTID
he said he did it for his mom who had cancer...
maybe this year, he can do it for his ball club… just an idea
except his numbers are better this year
so…..
(I’m still waiting for the beast stretch too, but so far overall this is the best year he’s had to date)
"If I had a dime for every basket I made today, you'd still suck!" - from the book 'John Dies @ the End'
the beast stretch may have been at this time last year but they'd already been playing for months..
and had the occasional day off…
you know…little things like that.
I think beast mode is necessary
even just to be an effective #1 offensive option. He’s kind of looking like a decent #2 or #3 option on a very good team…(dramatic pause to consider what should have been).
Last year was a snub
This year I don’t think so much
If he makes it this year ,it might be from snub effect.
Let's just admit now... the Blazers are the step child of the NBA.... we
probably wont have an all star starter for some time
Woe is Portland.

Definitely a travesty
If a guy with LA’s extensive, unimpeachable resume isn’t getting swept into the game as a starter by the league’s fans, there’s no hope for anyone else.
LMA should call it quits over the fans disrespect by not voting for him.
That’d be fine, though, since LMA is already a surefire HOFer after just six short years.
Why, by the way, isn’t LMA’s jersey already hanging in the rafters? LMA is so grand that he should be able to look up at his uniform while he plays at home. Each year, Portland could retire a new number worn by Aldridge due his single seasons being that gosh darn good.
"I Am Mine"
They should install wafer-thin video screens
on the back of the other players’ jerseys, so LMA can watch LMA highlights while he plays, to further inspire LMA.
HOFer and all star starter are not at all the same
All star starter is numbers and press.
all NBA or HOF is alot more.
That would certainly
make it much easier to dig up new numbers for our annual number retirement ceremony now that we’ve gone through the entire 1977 rotation, Clyde, and TP. Definitely more plausible than trying to make a case for Cliff Robinson and Buck Williams over the next couple years.
obviously sarcasm.
He is very good. And would be better with a better coach and point guard, shooters on his team.
LMA could get those rebounds but it's not nice to push and shove.
He’s a class act, he’s above that, and the official scorers should recognize this superior quality by giving him an extra five rebounds every game.

Just following AK's lead.
In Asia, my SAPD (snark attempts per day) is about 0.0 because it just doesn’t fly here. Gotta say it was real fun, since I can’t match AK in knowledge or incisiveness, to be an equal in snark for 15 minutes. Anyway, I actually hope LA reads this and gets angry and nasty because I think he’s just too well-adjusted and content in life to be an elite NBA rebounder. Or start taking ginseng, with coffee. That should make him agro, AND solve that heavy legs problem.

Hey, whatever gets you through the night, is alright, alright...
Definitely puts lead in the pencil, as does jiaogulan and dried moringa leaves. Hill Tribes, Shans, Thai Yai, Karen, Thai, Farang, we all love the stuff. The hippie farang numbers are pretty huge here in Chiang Mai. Not sure I’m a hippy anymore but what the heck –
Hippies for Ron Paul, unite!
Hahahahaha.
DUDE. What just got into you? I like it but…damn…this place is getting too snarky for me.

Well I just checked the BEdge script. Checked it twice, even.
Snarky Guy has already been filled. BY ME.
AK. Go back to being smart and having dead-panned facts to back up your points. Role of sarcastic butt-head is filled already, thanks!;)

No worries, sarcasm isn't my regular ride.
Just wanted to give that car one drive around the block.
"I Am Mine"
Hehe.

it'll be a good sign when we do though
it’ll mean we have star power again

I don't worry about this.....
LA will be voted in by the coaches. Because they actually know/watch basketball.
Go to Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company.
I doubt LMA actually makes it or even deserves to at this point
If he goes on another 35/10 tear before the All-Star game then he’ll probably get in. Other than that he’s playing fine but there are just too many talented forwards in the WC playing better.
He’s not playing as well as he was last year around and after the All-Star break. By comparison, Griffin and Love have improved. LMA needs to stop giving teammates rebounds, stop getting bullied in the paint and start demanding like 25 shots. Draw some fouls while he’s at it.
If it’s tired legs or whatever…at this point the rest of the forwards are dealing.
I've got news for you
So long as LaMarcus Aldridge is the team’s number one option, the Blazers will never win a playoff series. Because jumpshots don’t win playoff series’. I will say I’ve seen two up and under moves from Aldridge since I called him out two game ago for not having developed a single facet of his game since he was drafted six years ago, so I stand corrected there. What I don’t understand is why there is so much emphasis placed on making an all star team, when the fans vote for the starters? Who makes the first, and second all NBA teams is really more of an honor.

Dallas just won a title with jump shots.
There really isn’t much of a post game in the NBA these days, in fact. It’s a dying art, but more importantly, the style of play in the NBA is more and more perimeter oriented.

Well... That's a good point
Although, I’d say a great many of those jumpshots were not normal jumpshots as they were Nowitzki’s, and most of the others were because Nowitzki was drawing double teams and passing effectively out of them. For as long as I can remember prior to that, the tougher team has won. Also, conversely, the reason many people cite for the Heat losing that series was their reliance on jumpshots, and the lack of Wade and James posting up.

there is more to an offense then posting up and jump shots
just seems Wade/Bron could take turns, one being the point & one being the man who plays off the other, with Bosh going to the open spot on the court for jumpers. Or I’m just making this sound too simple…

Im a little upset here
ALdridge is better that Griffin. People give Griffin more credit simply because he is a highlight reel. I think every blazers fan should go to nba.com and vote for Aldridge daily. If Aldridge gets snubbed again then dont expect him to want to stay in Portland much longer.
