The Official 'Complain About Raymond Felton' Drawer
This is necessary. After seeing even Nate lose faith in him during tonight's game (for those who missed it, Nolan Smith played in favor of Felton going late into this game) I'm sure we all are feeling the frustration mount towards his awful and unreliable play, especially as we watch our beloved Andre Miller put up 28-8-10-2 while leading his team over the surging 76er's. With that being said, go ahead. Release your anger. Complain all you want. We're all here for each other.
I'll go first. What worries me is that Felton doesn't seem to be a leader--at all. "Who cares?!" you'll say, "Aldridge is our leader!". Yes, that's true...however, do you really want the man we traded for in hopes of being our PGOTF to be completely devoid of leading a team when they need him? Every game in which we are losing who does Nate have to rely on to play point? Crawford (or tonight, Nolan Smith). I don't see a fire within him, the same passion that makes Gerald eat anyone's face who tries to score or the defiance on Aldridge's face when they get in a hole.
As far as a player, the only skill I've seen of Felton's is that he's a pretty good finisher at the hole; it seems like this is what Nate saw in him. I thought this would be a good trade initially because Felton had decent 3P%'s (way better than most of our players last season) so I thought he would space the floor well. So far this season he's shooting 15.56%, worse than Andre Miller who, for the first time in any regular season ever, is shooting 3's (only with 22.2% success, but still). If it's a slump, it's one of the worst I've seen and his bad shot selection doesn't help. I haven't seen anything that's led me to believe he's a more than okay/decent passer and his lack of size makes him pretty irrelevant defensively.
There's a lot more to complain about but I'll save it for the comments. I feel like we will be discussing this for a while (hopefully not, though).

On another note
Nolan Smith played 10 minutes during this game, albeit off the ball mostly
Felton NEEDS TO GOOOOO
I hate to say it this early, but, we NEED to trade Felton. Even if his deep shooting gets better, his horrible defense, overdribbling, inablity to run the pick and roll, inability to finish at the hoop, unintelligent passing, and running way too fast arent going to change, hes been in the league 7 years, he is who he is as a player. Hopefully his, late game turnovers and slips/stumbles on the court will change as he continues to get in better shape, but Im not even so confident that will change. His TO average this season is right around his career average, so its not likely that will get much better. I think many blazer fans looked at Felton’s stats(specificly his high assisnt numbers his bloated 3p% of the past few years from NY and Denver) before we acquired him and assumed he was much better than he is. His high assist totals look nice but he really ISNT even better thn Andre. I guess hes a little bit better trade chip for the future but I really really hope thats all the Blazer brass considers him as. Andre put in a 28point 10 assist 8 rebound game last night and single handedly won the game for his team. To be honest I dont see Felton doing that once for the Blazers.

the player he's been this year is not the player he's been...that's part of the problem
he is who he is as a player

Never should have traded for him it seems
his value has dropped since we acquired him, with his production so far.

He has got to go
Ray was an interesting experiment, but he has no desire to win and has only ever played on loosing teams. He doesn’t read defenses well and seems to have subpar handles for a point guard. He also doesn’t run the offense well and is outplayed by almost every point guard in the league. I don’t know what we should do with him, but it isn’t in the blazers long term interest to be tied to a player like raymond. At this point in the season I think the team needs a major shake up and possibly we should be looking at rebuilding. I know this seems drastic, but this was our one last year and we clearly don’t have what it takes to beat even the most mundane teams and I find it unlikely that will change anytime soon.
He made the playoffs each of the last 2 seasons
And was a huge part in the Knicks’ hot start last year. Trading him just to trade him after 3 weeks will make the team worse now and long term
If you're not careful, Andre Miller can really sneak up on you
But we are on a losing streak
and anytime the blazers are on a losing streak, its time to blow it up.

this year he has not been good
but he has had more NBA experience than just these 14 games…it’s not as simple as “he just sucks”

We are always thinking we have to get rid of guys to get new guys who, when finally come, don´t make us enough better.
The faster we play that game, the faster we get worse. What I don´t like is that in the last five years we haven´t been able to develope and keep other than Batum, and I wouldn´t say he´s been improving that much. We have had a problem, other than injuries, in the development department. Now the team is limited and we have to stick with what we have. We are always in “win now mode”.
I pray that this is a start of the season slump.
He is a starting quality guard. Just not a playoff quality starting guard. This is not the East where you can blow a few games by blowing cute behind the back passes and still make the playoffs. I don’t know what happened to his three ball. But he is more of a liability than Dre was at the three point line. I’m afraid we are stuck with him for now though.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
Aside from his terrible shooting percentage
Ray is doing fine I guess, by his standards. We’ve just been spoiled by the great unheralded Andre Miller who got no respect when he was here, but was the main (or at least#2 reason behind lmas development we were competitive last year). How many easy buckets has lamarcus got this year as opposed to last years dre lob fest? Dre had intangibles that we tried to replace with a slightly better 3 point percentage. I’m not gonna rail on Felton anymore. He’s fine, he’s trying but he is no DRE. (would make a great backup to dre however).

I agree totally
The team is playing better with Felton at PG than it did with Dre at PG. I don’t think Ray’s inability to shoot in the early season is that big a deal. He gets to the cup, gets fouled, runs the offense, and generally is doing everything he is supposed to be doing.
The problem is more that other players (Wesley Mattews, I’m looking at you) are not hitting shots. Open shots. Shots they should make.
Also I accidentally flagged your comment when I was trying to rec it, not sure how that happened.
and i think it may have made me flag you too when I tried to rec the comment (?)
the system just hates you I guess.

I don't disagree with any of this
but Aldridge is having his best season so far

Aldridge is showing improvement
But no thanks to Felton. I can’t remember a single ally oop from Ray to LA this year. He’d probably be averaging about 27 ppg if dre was still here.
by blazerbacker on Jan 19, 2012 8:34 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
....
Ally oops aren’t what makes a PG good, or even a PF. Ray is averaging over 7 assits per game this season, a little more but roughly the same as Dre last year.
no but Dre
did a far better job of delivering the ball to LA deep in the post. Thats what makes both PG and post players good.
"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
He needs to lose about 20 lbs.
If he could get his weight under control I think he’d be just fine. He seems to tire quickly. Tired legs lead to missed shots and sloppy play.
Maybe he should join Barkley doing Weight Watcher commercials?
And he's missin' his shots, too.

No Surprise Here...
But I have been a vocal Raymond supporter, almost to a fault. He hasn’t been what I had hoped for in total, but I’m liking the direction the team is taking (getting everyone involved, much faster pace). What I don’t like are the growing pains (shooting woes, adjusting to new style, coming off post lockout era where few guys maintained the training level needed to succeed).
The following bugs me though:
1) comparing miller to ray. We were below .500 with miller at this time and we would be if he was still here. Get over it.
2) people saying “blow it up”… Obviously Ray still needs time to adjust. Lets stay the course, his stats will improve.
3) Lamarcus – saying he was better with miller doesn’t even make sense. LMa’s stats are better this year. Period.
4) Raymond can get anyone / everyone involved. His assists would be thru the roof if we as a team (including him) could finish at the rim. He distributes and can find teammates. Unlike miller who went one on one lol.
That’s all. Honestly what we need are bigs to rebound and interior presence so we don’t play this small ball.

We started last year 8-6 as well
With no Gerald Wallace and a much worse Aldridge.
Sorry,
I saw our 9-11 record, which was below .500 with miller at the helm. Hopefully we dont go 1-6 in our next 7. Lol.

I don't think we were an under-.500 team with Miller at the helm
I think Aldridge is having a good season DESPITE Felton’s PG play.
i agree with you on all levels.

Felton has to go...
through about three or four practices.
Here is what I see: Poor execution because of unfamiliarity. He doesn’t know the system yet, ye hasn’t had any real practice time to learn the system and that results in not knowing where to expect the player movement to send the guys around him, which then leads to errant passes, bad spacing, frustration that then leads to ill-advised attempts at driving into traffic, and further turn-overs which kill his confidence and affects his shooting percentage because he’s a half-second behind everything that is going on.
I know it is frustrating as a fan to watch Felton play right now. Believe me, in that first quarter of what would become a blowout against Phoenix last night, I was yelling at my TV in disgust over Felton making stupid passes and racking up turn-overs. To be fair though, you have to know it is ticking him off as much as it is anyone else by the expression on his face and by the efforts he displayed last night to get the ball back after he made those mis-reads.
Give him time, he will come around. The fact remains that he’s had virtually no time to practice with the team, no time to learn the system and his screw ups aren’t due to incompetence, they are due to not knowing the spacing, the routes his teammates are running and the tendencies of those teammates which will all come in time.

Sorry, I know that should have been a complaint. ;)
