Gameday Open Thread: Blazers vs. Hawks (2nd Half)
UPDATE: Nicolas Batum was poked in the eye during the first half (See details below). He's headed to the hospital for x-rays, and we'll update you when we have word.
Oh man. I hope you missed the first half. Atlanta leads a (stop me if you've heard this before) lethargic Blazer team by 9. Have you seen the movie "Crank"? This was exactly the opposite. There were no highlights. If you have it on DVR, just skip ahead.
Hang out here and commiserate with your fellow Blazer fans through the second half. And if you haven't learned what that SOPA thing is all about, pop by here (Google) and here (SBN), while you're ignoring the game, to learn more. -- Tim

we were moving the ball, playing fast, and looking very entertaining.
WHAT happened? why is nate calling out sets everytime down again? why aren’t we running?
PHILLY!
The team was bound to slow it down against down-tempo opponents.
This’ll continue against the Dwane Casey led Raptors and Lawrence Frank led Pistons.

We played Nothing but home games.
That’s what happens when your on the road

Yep
if there is one word to describe the Blazers this season it would be lethargic
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
It's not really lethargy.
I mean, look, here’s the thing: Portland lacks talent.
That’s pretty much it. The Trail Blazers don’t have enough talent to compete at an elite level.
"I Am Mine"
that was a horrible defensive unit to end that half
and we got torched, Smith + Jamal = no ball movement, Smith is more of a blackhole than anyone else
Blazers!!
These road games are painful to watch. What happened to our free flowing running offense? We seem slow and plodding like during the Roy era. Of course good offense starts with good defense and LaMarcus seems to be forgetting Camby isnt behind him to block shots and rebound. Come on Lamarcus.
Also can anyone on our team dunk?? SHEESH. We miss all these two footers because we try and flip the ball in instead of going up hard and trying to jam. Refs more likely to call a foul inside if you go up to jam!
Frustrating to watch.
OMG
According to Blazers, Nicolas Batum will not return because of a left eye injury
quick
ugh
PHILLY!
Defintely not haters
just people who aren’t wearing rose-colored glasses and think he can do no wrong at all and never actually see his faults
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
It's the Tebow Effect
people just bow down to him and act like he can absolutely do know wrong.
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
Are you kidding

Ya, I would say I had a eye injury
after watching Crawfords shots fail miserably each time he chucks the ball
Maybe the buddy buddy chemistry has succeeded in completely destroying the professionalism
Looks like these guys don’t really care much of the time.
It's not about chemistry or professionalism.
It’s about a lack of talent. That’s all there is to it.
"I Am Mine"
Agreed AK, this team needs to rebuild. The talent just isn't there. Wesley and Batum are solid players but Aldridge needs another star next to
him.
by BRoyInThe4th on Jan 18, 2012 6:18 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
Yeah, LMA is a #2 option on a title contender.
After that, Portland has a couple 4th/5th option types in Wesley Matthews and Nic Batum. It’s a weak foundation.
"I Am Mine"
yeah but outside of the draft, is there any superstar out there that you could honestly get to portland?
probably not
thats the other bad thing, has there been any team in the league that has drafted worse then us in hte last few years?
I bet if we looked around, we'd see we're not alone.
Especially if you look at people who haven’t had any high picks.
i dunno miami is starting one of their rookies they chose at the end of the first round
and even the lakers have had some luck, and we know San antonio always pulls gems out of the draft, thats how those teams can hold onto their stars and continue to put talented young players around them year after year
Miami started one of their rookies because they needed to.
Some rookies do great in trail by fire, and I honestly wonder if ours would. So hard to say.
What late draft pick has succeeded in LA to a significant level? I honestly don’t remember.
SAS has done some good drafting. I think they’re the model all teams wish for, they’ve stolen some great picks.
I don't talk up Batum much, but with further (well focused) growth he could become a third option on a contender
But yeah, that alpha superstar is still missing.
Can't build a Wes Matthews, but he could be a piece...
they need a legit scorer, not a sixth man of the, who thinks he’s the reincarnate BRoy
You mean Aldridge and a once healthy Roy.
How the Blazer’s fortunes have changed…
its not like they dont want to miss shots
they just cant make them
by Peteyhasnohead on Jan 18, 2012 6:19 PM PST up reply actions
i think your right
the only time they’ve looked decent is at home with a good crowed. a really talented team should be good with or without a crowd or other emotional boosters.
they did just fine last season
the talent is there to play the freaking Rockets. This may be about talent in the playoffs but right now it’s more than that.
that's fine but the play as of late is more than a lack of talent
Unless we want to claim the same about the 0 – 5 road Spurs.
by poorwebguy on Jan 18, 2012 6:22 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
We have a bunch of shooters that can't shoot. Wesley, Batum, Crawford, and Felton are all bricking.
Aldridge doesn’t look as strong in the post as last year. I would love to see Batum or Aldridge just attack the rim with authority. Even if they get a charge, get stripped, or blocked. It would be nice to see. They never challenge the defense.
Aldridge being met in the paint by at least 3 guys
because he’s the only threat we have from mid range and out
Aldridge
Why did Aldridge add muscle in the off season if he isnt going to use it? Man up and get in the paint. He said he cant jump as high because of the added weight and that contributes to his 2 foot misses. Well whats the point of the weight if he isnt going to bang?? Oy vey.
i actually don't hate nic, but i do hate how everyone acts like he is amazing
he has great potential, but we have been saying htat for years, hes still inconsistant at best, and very passive.
Sounds like Batum has a serious eye injury. Could this be Amare level type injury that requires surgery.
Amare's was very serious
how are you figuring Batums is as serious from him missing the second half, do you have more info?

The home games have had mad hustle and defense. Offense was secondary.
The road games have been awful stinkers, including the one win in New Orleans. Just, terrible basketball all around.

I dont think Batum is the only one with injured eyes. None of our other guys can hit a thing.
Someone find some 3 goggles!
Assuming this is the same team next year, what do you think Aldridge will be saying about this season?

OKC won't win the West with Scott Brooks as its head coach and a #1 option with terrible handles.
For OKC, it needs two things.
1. For Russ Westbrook to surpass Kevin Durant.
2. A competent head coach to fix the team’s offense and defense.
That, by the way, is why I think San Antonio with a healthy Manu can take the Western Conference this year.
"I Am Mine"
Yeah, I also think the Lakers could maybe put it together for a run if Kobe goes off.
Can’t trust the Clippers due to VDN and its porous defense. I also feel that Denver and Portland lacking a superstar player makes it too tough to climb the mountain.
"I Am Mine"
If Portland made a key trade, they could sneak into the WCF
But it would need to be a pretty genius trade, and a very vulnerable West.
Really bad luck there
If SAS hadn’t had that shot count that was after the buzzer in the final week, the Blazers would have played the reeling seventh seed Hornets.
Portland could have snuck into the WCF in that scenario
The Blazers have had some awful luck beyond injuries the past 5 years.
Oddly, I think a 1/8 between OKC and Portland could be that matchup.
A team like San Antonio — if healthy — would be a terrible matchup for Portland.
"I Am Mine"
Yeah, Portland needs to shore up the interior via trade.
And also hope that Ray Felton and Jamal Crawford go on a hot streak at the right time.
"I Am Mine"
They've got Bynum and Gasol.
If they can both go 36 to 40 per game come playoff time, then they’re fine with McBob getting the scraps.
"I Am Mine"
Do you trust Bynum enough to go 36-40?..
and will they be able to spread the floor enough to not get completely clogged in the middle?
I was watchin some of the okc game and westbrook just looks like he's doing what felton says he does.

I know for a lot of guys being selfish is part of their nature. They've been the stars their whole life in high school and college.
In the NBA though you can’t do that, especially when you are just a role player. We got guys thinking that Aldridge plays off them instead of the other way around. I love playing basketball with tall players that do work in the post. If Aldridge is in the post he should get the ball every possible chance.

Refs specifically said he hadn't gained control
It was basically a pass to himself, which is legal if he hasn’t dribbled yet.

When they have energy they are SO good.
When they look even remotely tired though, it’s crawful to even watch.

they need to get offense from their defense
which is hard to do consistently

"Say his NAME, Portland. Gerald Wallace is...awesome." -Dave, 4/9/11
I guess, but usually when he misses his first few he gets timid and doens't do much
Looked like the start of todays game
any nolan smith fans watching?
I keep hearing people calling him a “true point.” I hope those people occasionally watch games cuz i’ve yet to see him set someone up.
by hollywood robinson on Jan 18, 2012 7:05 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
Has anyone called him a pure point?
I’m as high on him as anyone, but my comparisons were always of the George Hill to Darren Collison variety. A solid rotation player who should get immediate burn.
"I Am Mine"
Kirk Hinrich is bigger is size, as well as a far better defender.
Nolan, however, has got a better dribble-drive game than Hinrich.
"I Am Mine"
Yeah, I don't think anyone assumed he'd be a great distributor right away.
Especially considering he played the two at Duke until Irving went down.
Nah, but he's a George Hill type combo guard.
Players like that make an immediate impact and should be playing from the get-go.
"I Am Mine"
That wasn't a travel, just looked at the replay. When Wallace had control of the ball he took 2 steps. He usually does travel
though so it’s kind of ironic that play got the fans upset.

I don't mind him
But I don’t think he’s been leading the charge here or anything. He’s certainly holding his own which is a reason to give him more minutes, but lets not overhype him (yet)
Can hit the 3, looks alittle slow but looks like he actually is trying to defend Teague and help

This is what happens when you have two of the most inconsistent-but-good teams in the NBA
just trading streak after streak
Jamal. Atlanta. 4th Quarter.
Add any other variables after “Jamal” and it doesn’t work, but this often works.
i usually criticize nate
But his defensive advice was right on the money – get in there body force them off there game – seems to be working

Too be quite honest Crawford is still not a very useful player if he isn't scoring. He doesn't do much off ball and his defense is bad.
We’re just lucky the Hawks are a crappy team too.

At the end of the day
Nolan HAS to play. Why not give him some burn CONSISTENTLY in big minutes. Without Nolan, its Felton for big minutes and Crawford playing out of position at the 1. Both are not good options

Bad call by Nate.
He’s got a pathological problem with rookies. At least leave the guy in until he does a Felton-like mistake.
felton dribbiling out there like my grandma
I don't always root for an NBA franchise, but when I do, I prefer the Portland Trail Blazers.
Felton comes in and everything bad that can happen does happen. I'd trade Felton for Nash. At least with Nash he can make a wide
open shot.
Would love to have Nash.
He’ll get that 3 point shot all day. He and LaMarcus would be like peanut butter and jelly.
Felton couldn't hit a 3 even if it was on the jersey of the guy guarding him.

I'm going to have to choose a Portland player or coach to hate on
so I don’t stand out from the crowd so much.
#52--------I believe in Greg Oden
No, I'm not new here or to the Blazers. The only active players I've ever hated
are Danny Ainge and Rueben Patterson.
#52--------I believe in Greg Oden
This is definitely not the McGrady I remember
Also, I’d like to note how happy I am the “first initial — last name syllable” nickname thing has died out.
Long 2s aren't the answer.
Some perimeter ball reversal to Wes in the corner for a 3 sounds good right about now.

Oh no ... foul on Teague ... Thank God he's not shooting. I couldn't take that close up again.

And that's the cunundrum
Play a struggling Felton or Crawford at the 1 in crunch time. Oh Lord.

Josh Smith
is a perfect symbol for the Hawks. It’s like he plays on both the Globetrotters and the Washington Generals at the same time.
He has been closing out on shooters decently
but he usually over plays it & doesn’t have the quickness or commitment to recover on most NBA guards :\
Then again, that might be my pro-Seattle bias talking.
I can’t take the Plunder seriously.
"I Am Mine"
1 Win on the Road 1 loss at home.

LET THE LAMONSTER ERA BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When Brandon Roy went down, that was it. The sum of a bunch of mediocre guards doesn't amount to a superstar.
Scrubs don’t make other scrubs better. Superstars make others better. We have no superstars.
Felton/Crawford
9 for 28, 2-5 from three. Dont get it done yet again
Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB
Ever since we took out Nolan we are getting killed
Smith is the only one on the team who was playing on ball defense against teague and when he came out they were able to run their offense and penetrate to the lane and hit open shots.
Well, if you like moral victories, the 2012 Blazers are a good team to root for.
Well, they made a nice comeback…
I'm sorry but
you can’t really get a moral victory by losing to the Hawks.
