Desperately need a back up point.
I Can't think of any moves that are more responsible for the Blazers funk than putting Crawford at the back up point. It's a small move on the surface but hugely significant to the team's mentality. Crawford is the only player the Blazers have that steps outside the offense to get his shot and the Blazers need that to take the pressure off of Aldridge, Felton, and Batum. Those guys get their shots within the flow of the offense which is great, but a winning team has to have players that don't hesitate to put up their shots whether its the first or fourth quarter or if they are hitting or not hitting. Their confidence always has to be there. Making Crawford the back up point has caused him to hesitate with his shot and now his confidence is lost. He needs the green light as soon as steps on the floor to bring that offensive confidence to the whole team. Not to mention he's just not a good point guard. Would rather see Elliot Williams get a shot at that and have Crawford go back to shooting when he gets in the game.
This team doesn't have traditional stars at this point. Maybe Aldridge will find his groove again, or Felton will start hitting his shot, or Batum will become a better finisher in traffic, but right now It has to be a mix and match of roles. Crawford needs to be fullfilling the role in which we signed him for otherwise this team has the same problem it had before the off season problems. An offense that inevitably stalls out.

Last year All-Star candidate isn’t good enough for you at point? I mean he only has 9 assists today against NOH…..trash.

he not the same player he was last year
he can’t shoot even when left open (1-8 FG). yes he finish with 12 assists in today’s game, that was great, spectacular, All- Star worthy, but also turn the ball over 8 times and the guy he was guarding had 21 points. looks good to me sign him to that big deal.

How closely have you followed the Blazers?
Remember Outlaw, and Andre Miller? They and Felton use the season to work themselves into shape and always have. Felton is a good shooter who just needs to find his place on the roster and get in shape.

Felton shoot 46% from 3 in Denver
He said he weighted 225 or heavier at the time.(said this in first media interview in Portland.) I don’t think its getting in shape is the problem.

Its not all about body weight
getting your arms and legs in shooting shape is the bigger issue.

Totally agree
Its not a normal season on top of a small sample size. Better to look at career stats right now then what has happened recently.

My thoughts too.
I was excited to get Pot Belly Felly because of his three ball%. He’s making Dre look like a sniper this year.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

Even if we got another point guard, he would just come here and suck just like every other point guard not named Dre.
No team will ever let go of one of the good ones so forget it.
LET THE LAMONSTER ERA BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah you know Andre Miller served our team quite capably
And he would be serving to this day if some ignoramus hadn’t gotten the fool idea to trade him for Felton.

and he would continue his legacy
of never making it out of the first round.
Felton would look good playing a slow pace
And dumping it to Roy too I think. One of the problems with a fast place offense is it puts a lot of pressure on the PG spot. Felton wasn’t much worse then Miller in recent seasons so I don’t think the switch made much of a difference.

Agree that Crawford not the answer at point.
I’d be willing to give up some of our young talent (not currently being developed with adequate playing time) for Farmar, if NJ were willing. He also has a player option, so may push RF a bit in anticipation of an opt-out/new contract next year.
Farmar ought to be a farmer
He would look better in overalls.

When reached 40+ years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Interesting observation
In a small sample size Crawford has provided both the best and worse of his potential. It makes me wonder about the long term planning of the team and whether it is wise to include Crawford in the future.
For this season, I don’t see the management moving away from the guy. The coach loves him and players like him (see Roy, Outlaw) and it was one of the major successes of the (current) GM to sign him.
It would be nice to see if Nolan or Williams could handle a larger role…and don’t give me this stuff about they have to prove it…If Nate has shown anything it’s that he is stubborn and will hold fast to his veteran first mentality (almost every time).
Nolan and Williams have shown small flashes this season…let ’em run coach!

It's time for Cap'n Kirk!
no one has mentioned his name in months

What?
He is having a much better season then Felton. Not to mention how well he played in the playoffs last year. He is exactly what we need in a backup PG.
Paul Allen, the 2011 Trail Blazers Owner/GM
He could be a decent pickup
good D big PG with a 3 point shot. I don’t think he gels well with the fast pace offense. But if we get Kirk we should also trade G3 for a legit center if possible and slow the game back down.
You just can't trade Batum
strait up for much cause of his small contract. Thats why I lean towards G3. I really don’t want to trade EWill, I still think he could be something pretty special.
You can trade him for rookie scale players, like Javale McGee.
His coach hates him & neither of Washington’s small forwards that they drafted are turning out to produce much. Nic’s french pal Kevin Seraphin is already on their team too.
I wonder if they would just take a 1st round pick and cash for him
I know their owner doesn’t need any more cash, but it never hurt anyone.
Hey it worked with Lamar
btw, how did we not get in on that deal?
This wouldnt be a need if Nate actually developed players drafted by the team
What kills me is that with the shortened season you would think Nate would be playing a deeper rotation and actually giving our inexperienced players some run, not only to keep the rest of the teams minutes down but to also keep them from being gassed as we have seen over the last 3 game losing streak. We have point guards on the roster, put one of them out there instead of having Jamal Crawford play the point, he is a scorer, use him for his strengths—scoring!! Put out Nolan Smith or Armon Johnson, for the last 3-4 games Nate has said he was going to play Nolan Smith alongside Crawford, that has yet to happen.

during the PHX vs. POR game
Nolan Smith was absolutely murdered by Nash, 3x in a row on the pick-n-roll. He would go behind the screen, lose his switch, and run back to the original guy, creating space for the opponent. I went to all the sites after the game and was astonished no-one really zeroed in on this HUGE monumental problem he was having during this game.

Nash murders almost everyone
Smith against a second unit PG isn’t as scary – or isn’t in theory.

the season in still young
i’m not totally sold on Felton though. Miller is a hard-nosed lunchpail hardhat kinda guy. I loved him. My favorite Blazer during his tenure. But, he had obvious limitations that Felton is supposed to erase. Felton’s outside shot, UGGGHH!! What is he, 6/40?
I wanna see more Elliot Williams!! Not just for oohs and ahhs at his leaping prowess.. More so because he has shown passion(arrogance), talent(fearlessness) to do what it takes to be a standout. I think the kid could really be some1. He’s made the most of his time and shows real chops to get it done. Much more so than Babbitt “theWhiteRabbit”, and arguably more than AJ and CJ.

Felton would look more luchpail if the Blazers played a slow pace
For all the excitement over the fast pace, it does change what the PG’s role is. So comparing last year’s Miller, to this year’s Felton, isn’t as telling as it would be in past years.

I like Felton.
My point was Crawford shouldn’t play the point when he is on the court with the second unit. I have a theory that you have to have players that play with a ego. The bench is an unlikely source for that, but probably our best source in Crawford. However now he is playing conservatively out of a responsibility to the team as the back up point. We need that ego.
Would love to see Batum or Aldridge play with that ego. Though last night I saw Aldridge get the ball against Jarret Jack down the stretch and he waited for the double to come then passed it out. A star thinks of himself as a star and takes that shot and the team wants him to as well.
Batum blew by a guy on the perimeter on the base line only to see his shot get swatted at the rim. I don’t know how that happens but it shouldn’t and Batums confidence going to the rim is still limited. He has been trying more which is good.
Crawford brings that confidence when he comes in shooting and the rest of the team feeds off of it. I just think that since he has played the back up point that confidence has been flushed down the toilet.
Really how hard could it be to fill the role of back up point. Wallace did it just fine for a couple of plays. Smith plays to fast and isn’t feeling the game, but what would he be like if he knew he was getting consistent minutes. Elliot Williams maybe isn’t a traditional point, but he can blow by pressure and apply it on the other end. Plus he’s a stand out in development. He needs some minutes.
Crawford at the back up point is damaging.
Agree
Crawford at the 2 is a much better place for his skills. I was hopeful that Nate was actually goingto follow thru and play Smith some, but alas, not yet.

I made a similar point a few weeks ago
but for a different reason. I get your point about ego and how it screws up Jamal trying to decide what to do, but I don’t think that’s the main problem with him playing the point. He is essentially an iso player who will drop the ball off on occasion. We need someone like that on the second team, and occasionally on the first team, but not as the point, because everyone else ends up standing around, and Crawford’s always going to have cold stretches. We need someone other than him having some control over how often Jamal shoots.
