POLL: Blow It Up or Stay The Course?

Well here we are at 7-5 with 3 losses in a row and make that 4 more games to go on the road. Weve seen some great early season play and weve seen some absolutely horrific basketball. We cant seem to get a road win to save our souls. Our team at times looks really good, but on the road we become seriously lackluster and just plain dumb. I read all the comments last night, most of which were negative, few were positive. It got me wondering, what is the right course of action for this team. Also, One question I certainly have is when does its "still early in the season" quit being an excuse for us? We are over 1/6 of the way done and have played a dozen games together. Anyways, some games have made us look like the best team in the NBA and other games make us look like my JV squad back in 8th grade! So I ask you, should we blow this team up, trade away everyone but LMA, Batum and Wes? Or, should we stay the course, let this shortened season play out - even if we suck all season, let the chips fall where they may? Is it still too soon to ask this question?

Give this team some time

They have only been playing together for about a month? Camby is injured. We all knew some injuries were coming. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is out for two to three weeks. The Blazers with coach Nate historically have done well with their backs against the wall. Let’s not throw in the towel yet.

Blowing the team up is a bad thing. Add pieces as you go and try to win now. Planning for the future is a roll of the dice. Remember when it was Broy, GO, and LMA that where going to take us to the promised land (championship).

I shoulda put in an option for

just making a casual fixit trade, because the fact is, we need a center, a good starting center. A small trade, that doesnt give up to much. Who we give up and who we get?, IDK.

Also, I voted for stay the course. I feel we are just one piece away from being a championship level team. But even so, I still think this team will make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs with this roster. If only Oden could get healthy enough to play the last 20 or so games to get into game shape, we could be unstoppable by the playoffs!

by cavejunctionblazer on Jan 15, 2012 11:35 AM PST reply actions   2 recs

yeah, casual fix-it trade is the answer,

we need a center who can stay on the court. desperately. crawford-felton have been pretty bad lately, but center is most important, and otherwise we have a great forward tandem with aldridge, wallace, and batum that could form a winning team if we can get some durable, high quality players at PG and center. both of those problems could miraculously be solved from the inside somehow (oden coming back dominant, felton finding his groove), but if they don’t, we have enough flexibility to do something about it if our front office can do a good job. It’d be better to go out and get a good center anyway, just so we don’t have to depend on Oden for survival.

You made a mistake

you may want to edit. We have 4 more road games NOH, ATL, TOR, and DET. The last two are back to back. Anymore I usually just try to guess what management will do as trying to play GM is futile. I think they’ll stay the course as next summer opens up the possibility to completely change the team. Right now both Felton and Crawford are shooting well below their career averages. That should change for the better as they settle in. We need either an elite PG that will provide 9 or 10 assists per game or two fairly good guys at 5 to 7 a game. We need at least two big men unless Oden suddenly reappears at a decent level. I’d keep Wallace, Batum, Matthews and Aldridge. No reason to give up good players when you don’t have to.

by XBlazerfan on Jan 15, 2012 12:46 PM PST up reply actions

Too many question marks with this team

I don’t know either way, but if management decided to trade away everyone (including Aldridge for say, john wall plus an unprotected wizards 1st round pick in next years draft) they can get value for, I wouldn’t think it too foolish. This team is good, but it may not be great enough to win a championship I’m afraid. If there is ever a time to predict when to rebuild through the draft, next years draft would be a good place to start.

I'm feeling the same way, I really don't know.

It all comes down to the small forward position. In which, if we want to stay the course, we will stick with Wallace & trade Batum. If we are blowing it up, we will keep Batum & build around him/Aldridge. Also, good point on next years draft being the time to rebuild.

i think GW as much as i love him and hate to say it

is our most valuable trade asset, 1, because hes a great all around player, 2, because we have Batum at his position and 3, because he might bail after this season anyways

if we can combine GW, Camby and (?) in a trade, we should go for a center. Who? I dont know.

by cavejunctionblazer on Jan 15, 2012 2:11 PM PST up reply actions

The thing is

he is only valuable to contenders, or teams with several young stars who think he is the missing link.

Purely logical point of view...

I think they should trade Wallace and pieces. I like him. If they don’t, I have no issues. The human side of me says it would suck for him to be traded again after settling in and buying in. I just want to see more Batum and I think it would be folly to trade him thinking Wallace is going to be able to play this level for very much longer. Wallace might actually bring back some help in the front court.
If they stay the course, I am fine with it. I like the team. I have just wanted to see them get a quality big to pair with LA for a long time and am kind of done with the “Waiting for GOden” script. Oden Camby, Przy, would have been nice if it ever would have happened. Camby, Thomas, Smith, Johnson, isn’t enough. It would be a bonus if they could keep Camby for this season but if it takes trading him to bring something of value back to the Blazers, I would not be opposed.

but is Khan really that stupid?

by YoniRap on Jan 15, 2012 12:09 PM PST up reply actions

Nope.

He tied his future to Ricky´s (that way he bought 2 years of ownership and fans patience, as Ricky was not coming until this season) and he won at last.

yeah.

if we had gotten to rubio before he arrived in the NBA and proved everyone wrong, there would’ve been a chance, but now him and kevin love have become total league darlings and khan is looking like some sort of accidental genius.

Yep.

Wait until they can get rid of the scrubs surrounding those two. Then they are going to kill most teams.

lets not give them too much credit

unless they get a dominant defensive center they will be in the same first round playoff exit bucket we are.

we're not an elite team...so I say blow it up

we had a nice start to the season, but I still don’t think we’re an elite or true contending team. I definitely think we should blow it up a bit and rebuild. How? :

1) Trade Gerald Wallace and either Batum or Matthews for an elite wing (Danny Granger-ish?), PG, or C.

I love Gerald Wallace too. But he’s getting older, and his contract is going to be up next year. Are he and LMA enough? Not in my opinion. I think we move him while his value is high. To get an elite player, we’d likely need to add either Batum or Matthews to the deal. That helps thin out our rotation a bit, and also prevents the issue of having to pay more than $7M to two guys who can’t create their own shot. If we can get a solid PG we can feel better about letting Felton’s deal expire.

2) Let the contracts of Felton and Camby expire, and waive/renounce other deals necessary to get max contract cap space – sign another to-flight free agent with the max cap room next offseason.

If we let Felton and Camby expire, we can get enough cap room to offer a max free agent deal next offseason, mostly due to Brandon Roy’s contract coming off the books. We could add another prime free agent to the LMA+Elite player (trade for in #1). So we would have 3 legit guys as our core, with Matthews likely too. Then we can add smaller pieces as needed moving forward.

Obviously, the decision becomes, is Felton+Matthews+Batum+Wallace+LMA+Camby good enough to win a title. Also, is that group better than what we would end up with (i.e. can we get a better PG than Felton?) That’s why those front office guys make the big bucks

by rip_city_swagger on Jan 15, 2012 12:07 PM PST reply actions

it's a relatively "stay the course" season

Blowing it up would do nothing good for the season…and if it’s a fail season, so be it – there are plenty of moves to be made in the summer and the roster could essentially be blown up then if need be. In the meantime, I wouldn’t say that a trade or two shouldn’t be made in the coming months.
Three games ago everyone thought we were a contender – two games ago everyone wants to blow up the team. There has to be a happy medium here.

Gerald Wallace and Felton for Deron Williams.
But I am definitely against the idea to blow the team up.

some folks are, im not unless its for howard and he agrees to sign an extension

mostly im for a decent trade where we land a starting center and give up a couple pieces of our own.

One thing that kinda bums me out is Ray ceiling isnt much higher that it already is!

Raymond is playing just below his career averages. Right now this season he averages 11.1pts 6.8ast 2.8rebs 2.6tos and his career #’s are 13.6pts 6.7 ast and 3.4rebs 2.6tos.

Seems to me there isnt much more that Ray is gonna give us.

Unless he has a complete turn around to his game, hes barely shy of what hes averaged over his career. Not holding out for a better PG and trading away Dre was not a good move, atleast it appears that way so far. Even so, I say we need a starting center position more than we need to upgrade Ray at this time.

by cavejunctionblazer on Jan 15, 2012 2:39 PM PST reply actions

Smart

Teams maximize assets and move players when perceived value is highest. We always wait to long on players who end up falling apart under Nate. Right now both Felton and Wallace have good value, especially Wallace. If Boston wants to make one more run they might go for a rondo for Wallace and Felton move. That would give them enough fire power to make one last go of it. We get a star next to Aldridge, with two really good glue guys in batm and matthews. Rondo can penetrate and set up the correct open man. We then have to move camby and crawford for a pure healthy defensive center that might not be the rebounding machine, but clogs the paint. Or wait on oden or freeland in 2013.

by Cabbol on Jan 15, 2012 4:14 PM PST reply actions

Rondo for Felton and Wallace

doesn’t work on trade checker. Felton and Batum does or Wallace and Elliot Williams does. I doubt any of those trades would be of interest to Boston. That’s the trouble with trades you have to give up at least as much as you get or like in the case of Miller for Felton a downgrade.

by XBlazerfan on Jan 15, 2012 5:18 PM PST up reply actions

We gotta deal almost everyone so we can have cap space this summer.

I would be looking pretty hard at the 2008 draft class. Some real studs-Specifically Eric Gordon, Kevin Love, Roy Hibbert, OJ Mayo, Brook Lopez, Danillo Gallinari, Russell Westbrook, plus DJ Augustin, Javale McGee, Michael Beasley, and Ryan Anderson.
Offer max money to Love, Westbrook and Gordon, and try to add Rudy Gay through trade or sign some of those other 08 draftees and you would have a solid rebuild on the fly. Just getting Gordon would be solid for our future 2-guard position.

by philthebballplayer on Jan 15, 2012 6:57 PM PST reply actions

Who would you deal for him?

I would like to have him AND Rudy Gay because you wouldn’t have to worry about Rudy leaving via free agency(like you do with Batum, Felton, Camby and Wallace) and he would be a solid #2 option.
Maybe Felton and Wallace or Batum for Gay, Conley, and Mayo?

by philthebballplayer on Jan 15, 2012 11:09 PM PST up reply actions

2 things we need to do

Get a pg and a c
I think the team will be fine this year it’s just not fun to deal with a 3 game slide.
a dream trade for me would be batum Felton crossfaded for McGee granger and a scrub.

by DonttrashCrash on Jan 15, 2012 8:45 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Roy Hibbert, JaVale McGee, or Andrew Bogut

We need to get one of those three next to Aldridge. What we give up to get them is more or less meaningless as long as we aren’t pulling an Orlando and getting long term expensive contracts all over the place. If at all possible, I’d prefer to keep Batum, Matthews and the rights to Freeland. Hibbert, of course is the hardest get for us, as Indiana is playing very well and has no need to look to upgrade anywhere but to add a wing without sacrificing their core (preferably a two-guard). Matthews just isn’t good enough, and neither is Batum, for them to give up a borderline franchise center now. Last year, maybe. This year, no way. McGee, considering how Washington is playing, would probably be dealt for a decent package of draft picks and young guys. Perhaps giving up all our rookies/sophs and Wallace could net McGee in a three-team trade. Finally, Bogut is one of the only players the Bucks have going for them, so its no telling when Milwaukee decides enough is enough and goes back to rebuilding. When it does, Batum plus our rookies/sophs and one or two draft picks should be enough to pry Bogut, especially if this years draft pick is involved. Unfortunately, this means giving up Batum, and I see no way around it, as he is young enough and good enough to give them a good value (relatively) on their end.

by avalancheman on Jan 15, 2012 8:52 PM PST reply actions

I don't think that McGee or Hibbert

Would be easily traded for, but offering a massive and toxic contract to either this summer, that their teams won’t/can’t match, is very plausible. And you would keep everyone together except like Camby.

by philthebballplayer on Jan 15, 2012 10:27 PM PST up reply actions

The team will be fine

What we have seen are problems, but fixable ones. The team is doing better than most people thought it would, and they’ll be fine. I don’t want fine though, next year we have a few peices to pick up and do great.
