Patty or Pryzbilla?

Marcus Camby's injury got me thinking. With injuries being a part of the game, especially with the Blazers, it seems like the team goes from deep to shallow if just one key rotation player goes down. It seems to me the Blazer's do have money to sign a decent bench player.

Should we even bother, could Pryzbilla be the quick fix, or could Patty help us the most?

Either solution has its ups and downs.

Lets look at Patty. If we choose to sign him, it could mean having a backup PG or another guy sitting on the bench. We don't know for sure if Patty has improved in China and Australia, and if he hasn't, then Nolan will probably get the few minutes ahead of him. Even if he doesn't play, he is the joy of the team and can bring smiles and energy to the team, especially Nic and Wes. If he has improved to where he can play 5 or so minutes a night consistently, then his value skyrockets. Right off the bat, he brings energy to a team looking for sources of energy. He can shoot the three with accuracy, and most of all, maximize Jamal's play, something the team is relying on but isn't getting. Although he isn't a very good defender, I think he is better at D than Nolan and knows Nate's style.

Pryzbilla on the other hand is proven and will give what is expected. He would probably act as Kurt's white twin, and give a decent 10 to 15 minutes off the bench at C or PF. Although he does get injured, between Marcus, Kurt, and Pryzbilla, having one injured at a time wouldn't be all that bad. He doesn't seem so old compared to 37 and 39, and also knows Nate's style of play. He would fit in with the second unit well too, which seems to be slower paced with Kurt, Jamal, and Craig in there (exception: Batum). He isn't a long term solution, but the team isn't made for the long term either. Plus, he could fill out a couple of those empty seats with long time Vanilla Gorilla fans.

Finally, the most likely scenario is signing nobody. Hoping that injuries don't plague the team, Jamal will learn to play a little more PG, and Craig continues to play at around the level he is at, the team seems fine for a deep playoff run given chemistry increases and people start playing to their potential. The season could be rough and tiring, but we have people fighting for minutes and trying to find their roles as we know it.

There doesn't seem to be many other interesting FA left out there, but if there are, comment below. And if signing Patty isn't even possible, please let me know. I kind of assumed at that part.

I like patty

But the blazers need another center. I have a feeling if we had joel we would of had more rebounds and more tipped balls for us tonight.

If we just just

turn Oden, Camby, and Priz into some Voltron type of player.

Fiba Won't release players who played in CBA

Until March or so, whenever the Chinese Basketball Association finishes their season, even though Kenyon Martin and others were cut, FIBA hasn’t cleared them to come back to the NBA yet.

What....

Patty was cut like a week ago because he had a hamstring injury. Thats why he was at the rose garden during the orlando game…

Yep he was cut so was Kenyon Martin. However chinese basketball association does not allow release of players during the season and so they can’t play in the NBA until the end of the CBA’s season.

by PeregrinePDX on Jan 19, 2012 10:11 PM PST up reply actions

Neither would make any difference.

This team needs a starting PG who can pass and handle the ball (shooting would be a plus, but not a necessary one), and a durable starting C. 3rd string backups won’t do anything to fix these issues.

They also need a coach capable of some Xs and Os.

Patty?

Does anyone remember this guy, he couldn’t play PG to save his life. Patty was just a good locker room guy. we need size go get Joel.

Rec to highest degree.

This guy drove me nuts. Horrible PG. I’ve heard him described as a tiny SG, and that seems appropriate because he was an abysmal facilitator. Defensively, he was one of the single worst players I’ve ever seen, constantly finding himself out of position and getting shot over by the most diminutive of NBA guards.

The only benefit to having Mills on the team was all the rad Aussie fans he netted us, who all hate me because of my unrelenting criticism of the little guy..

yeah.

we already have jamal crawford, why should we get an even worse inconsistent chucking guard?

by YoniRap on Jan 15, 2012 12:22 PM PST up reply actions

I've called PM a micro SG

a healthy Mills has great straight-ahead speed. He doesn’t feature lateral quickness however, and he’s a defensive liability which forces his teammates to help out on either penetration or when he’s posted up. This leaves gaps in the defense and wide-open shots for the opposition

With Crawford struggling and Smith/Williams too young and inexperienced, the Blazers have a glaring need for a steady backup PG. The drop-off is obvious whenever Felton leaves the floor, and if Raymond was ever injured and had to miss a chunk of games, Portland would quickly slip out of the playoff picture

As I’ve said many times in the past, if Patty is “the answer” then I don’t want to know the question

pretty sure we have a full roster right now, somebody would have to get cut before we could sign either

Neither will help much

I’d rather wait it out and get Kenyon Martin when he’s cleared, or just wait for Oden to come back.

Not very good choices but

Mills may have some trade value, whereas Joel has NO value and is no longer an NBA player. I like him as a person and all , but If we are going for nostalgia we may as well sign Bill Walton

actual GMs of at least 6 NBA teams disagre with your assessment

No Patty For PDX

He will never fit in with McMuffin (coach not PG). Just look what is happening to Nolan and Armon. Amazing that Patty played any minutes in his two years at PDX!!! Hopefully, Patty might land up with some desperate NBA team that needs somebody that can handle the ball, pass, shoot and score.

by keywester on Jan 15, 2012 3:57 PM PST reply actions

Patty has improved considerably as a passing guard over the off season in his last 6 games

in the NBL before moving to China, he was averageing 7 assists a game under FIBA assist rules which would have been 10+ under NBA assist rules.

He is shooting very well to before being cut.

He is ready to step into the back up role a lot more than last year where as Berkley said he did have some very good games last season. For the 750K he would cost we could do FAR FAR worse. He would slot straight back in. Id be waving before he signs somewhere else. Several teams are having a look.

by benfti on Jan 15, 2012 4:49 PM PST reply actions

I watched a few of those games

in China and Australia, and although he is a scoring pg he made some plays and good passes too. His defense wasn’t too bad either (against lower quality players in CBA and NBL), and with his speed he should be able to keep in front of most NBA point guards if he commits himself to it. I’d like to see him get another chance in Portland too.

by simoninaustralia on Jan 16, 2012 7:06 AM PST up reply actions

Why Portland?

I’d love to see Patty play NBA ball, but for another team that can develope his PG skills.

by keywester on Jan 16, 2012 8:34 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, you might be right.

I think he is an NBA player, and in the past he hasn’t really fit with the Blazers, but as the Blazers have increased their pace Mills (who plays better in a fast paced offense) could be more valuable.

I guess as a Portland fan and an Australian I want to see him play for the Blazers. I also think that some fans are overly critical of Mills and I’d love to see him succeed on the Blazers despite their weak protestations…

by simoninaustralia on Jan 16, 2012 3:25 PM PST up reply actions

with his speed he should be able to keep in front of most NBA point guards

Straight-ahead speed =/= lateral quickness

he’s tweaked his hammy recently, so it’s not like his lateral quickness will be improved by will power

by two4larue on Jan 16, 2012 12:32 PM PST up reply actions

Patty Mills =/= lateral slowness

He’s actually pretty quick laterally. His hamstring tweak would slow him down for sure, but his biggest defensive weakness is his size. His defense can improve with a combination of will power and hard work.

by simoninaustralia on Jan 16, 2012 3:14 PM PST up reply actions

I've seen average NBA guards drive right around him

so I stand by my scouting report, and I expect you Aussies to stick up for him

Oy, oy , oy

by two4larue on Jan 17, 2012 12:12 AM PST up reply actions

It's true- Aussies do stick up for little 'battlers'

and I can’t say I remember a lot of Mills defensive plays in the NBA (which is to say that he probably wasn’t memorably good or bad) but I remember one game against Phoenix when he did a good job of staying in front of Steve Nash (true, one of the oldest pgs in the league, but still a very capable player not too far removed from MVP seasons).

by simoninaustralia on Jan 17, 2012 3:25 AM PST up reply actions

Don't want either.

I also don’t really want Armon. I’d waive him and go for Wallace or ANY other big we can get.

by hoodieNation on Jan 15, 2012 6:07 PM PST reply actions

Patty Mills please

We need him for his energy more than anything. We got to get him out of the CBA! Also, he wants to play for Portland – he considers it his home. We’d have to cut someone… I’d say cut Chris Johnson. His fouls per minute are too many for my taste. I’d rather they cut Armon, but I don’t think we can… some contract issue.
