Gameday Open Thread: Blazers vs. Rockets

The six-game road trip continues with a late afternoon contest, as the Portland Trail Blazers play the Houston Rockets (Tip off 5:10pm!). Can the Blazers start this road trip with a win?

(Also, if you'd like to talk playoff football, SB Nation has football blogs galore to discuss it with like-minded folks. Thanks!)

Injury report: Marcus Camby is out after injuring his ankle yesterday, and Kurt Thomas will start in his place (not Nicolas Batum as discussed last night).

Go Portland Trailblazers!

It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong. I am NOT a big man.

Joel? Joel? Are you out there Joel?

I think we’re gonna need you real soon; please return for the Spring and, hopefully, early Summer!

I saw Golden State signed Barron.

Wonder if the Blazers would take a flyer on Fesenko if he still wants to try the NBA. He can at least rebound if he can stay out of foul trouble, and take up lots of space inside. Maybe he could even get better with experience.

by kacee on Jan 14, 2012 4:41 PM PST up reply actions

yeah there a decent chance he could work out

and if he does, I’m pretty sure he’s a lot younger, so if he’s good he could stick.

4 bars 3 chicks 1 band

1 hotel room, 1 hot tub, 1 4am breakfast. Ashland is a fun town sort of a mini Portland!

plus got 86ed from a bar for the first time ever. Caught smokin inside the bar! CYA on to the next spot!

but did I mention 1 hottub? OK nuff said!

Breaking ankles.

The only one on the team who should be breaking ankles is JCrossover. That includes Camby.

by Oh. Em. Gee. on Jan 14, 2012 4:25 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Yep.

He’d have to sign the QO and spend a season in uncertainty before becoming a free agent.

Could happen, but I suspect a team would throw an offer at him in RFA that he’d take, leaving the Blazers with a big decision.

Boy i missed 2 of our worst losses so far

vs phx and last night vs SA. I saw a little of last nights game in the third right before SA tookover and never looked back. Its a shame because we were in it until the end of the 3rd.

by cavejunctionblazer on Jan 14, 2012 4:28 PM PST reply actions

I saw PHX, but not Orlando, SA or LAC

Very scared about our ability to play on the road or on b2bs based on the season so far.

What do people think about KT starting?

Personally I was hoping for Batum, because I think GW can defend Scola just fine.

Batum will get plenty of minutes with the starters

he just isnt starting on the court with them which is fine, it’s not like Thomas is going to play 42 minutes while Batum gets 15, however if you see CJ getting the majority of the minutes and not Batum small ball then something is definitely up

Seems to depend a lot on your area.

A couple years ago, Mortimer and I always saw the same feed on League Pass, while TD and a few others would see the opposite feed at times. And we all had the same overall cable provider.

Yeah I'm surprised it's not a choice on broadband, agreed.

I get that there are limitations on cable providers in terms of the number of channels they can offer, but broadband seems like a freebie unless there’s a licensing limitation.

They’re a pretty big market team and may have to tank in order to really rebuild around a star, or find someone willing to sign when they have cap space.. They attempted to grab Gasol, but once that fell through, there was really nothing.

It was in the cylinder and was going to bounce off the rim without him touching it.

Houston's broadcast

showed a replay and at least part of the ball was in the cylinder. I’m not sure what the exact rule is.

this is unbearable. let them play

The Rockets are a bunch of whiners....

Smith should’ve got more run-he was a one-man wrecking crew out there

I don't always root for an NBA franchise, but when I do, I prefer the Portland Trail Blazers.

Double digit deficit

Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!

by axel360 on Jan 14, 2012 6:00 PM PST reply actions

Of course we choose the 3 instead of the easy 2

But this was not so for Brandon Roy who listened to teammate Nicolas Batum, "You're an All-Star, a 3-time All-Star. Take the ball. They can't stop you. You just have to believe in yourself."

by speakers92blazers on Jan 14, 2012 6:00 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Seems like we always struggle in Houston

Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!

by axel360 on Jan 14, 2012 6:00 PM PST reply actions

Naw we dont wanna get up in the face of the games higest scorer

nor do we even have someone within 5 feet of him

how do you let lowry shoot an uncontested wide open 3 like that?

by cavejunctionblazer on Jan 14, 2012 6:00 PM PST reply actions

Well I don't know...

he’s a good 5 ft past the 3 pt line. Let him shoot it

Are game day threads always like this?

Where the last play defines the game?

Reactionary stuff must get old after a while…

by blacknoiseNW on Jan 14, 2012 6:02 PM PST reply actions

the entire first half has been defined by lots of mediocre play. that is reflected in here

by permaswoon on Jan 14, 2012 6:03 PM PST up reply actions

yeah this. GDT should technically be reactionary by nature

by poorwebguy on Jan 14, 2012 6:04 PM PST up reply actions

Reactions yes...but the "reactions" are that the game is over

Which is hardly the case…

Law of Logical Argument

by blacknoiseNW on Jan 14, 2012 6:04 PM PST up reply actions

yeah definitely not the case

some people are just more dramatic I guess

by poorwebguy on Jan 14, 2012 6:05 PM PST up reply actions

Deflating games always lead to bad GDT's

It’s just like the fans you see around you at a live game when things go south.

by poorwebguy on Jan 14, 2012 6:11 PM PST up reply actions

Well the HT score isn't too bad considering the play so far

Still in it. Just need to figure out how to play D in the second half.

by SlowCarCrash on Jan 14, 2012 6:11 PM PST reply actions

LMA’s in for a big second half.

by AP_18 on Jan 14, 2012 6:11 PM PST reply actions

So, will we get down by 20 in the 3rd, and try a late-game heroic comeback

Or build on some of the positives and decisively beat this lesser Houston team?

by CleBlazer on Jan 14, 2012 6:13 PM PST up reply actions

Batum is a guy who needs minutes and the greenlight to shoot so he can find his groove.

Unfortunately this season because of player dynamics and whatever, the opportunity hasn’t been there for him.

by Stryder9 on Jan 14, 2012 6:12 PM PST reply actions

He needs a little sprinkling of Jamal in his mindset

a little more “selfish” with the ball when he’s on the floor would be a good thing for Batum

Tell me again why we traded Miller?

by RenoBlazerFan on Jan 14, 2012 6:13 PM PST up reply actions

It's a tough situation

with both him and Wallace. I’d like it if the front office was proactive about finding a solution, maybe trading one or the other? i’m not sure what the answer is, but he can’t keep playing so few min.

by Batman_88 on Jan 14, 2012 6:13 PM PST up reply actions

58 points given up in the first half

Blazers need to learn that switching defense is a bad defense in general, and a horrible defense for a condensed schedule….

seems like when they get tired

they do a horrible job fighting screens and just switch everything and eventually get out of position

by Peteyhasnohead on Jan 14, 2012 6:15 PM PST up reply actions

And when you are tired, you switch slower...

Has Batum had a bad game, this season?

Law of Logical Argument

by blacknoiseNW on Jan 14, 2012 6:14 PM PST up reply actions

He hasn't had a great one to prove he has improved. His only good games are when he is on fire. So basically if he misses 2 shots

he is out of it mentally. If he misses his first shot or two in the second half he will become a non factor again.

by BRoyInThe4th on Jan 14, 2012 6:15 PM PST up reply actions

His offense has been totally uneven, for sure.

I think his defensive energy is there every game

by RenoBlazerFan on Jan 14, 2012 6:16 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah - Batum has found ways to contribute even when the shot isn't falling

by blacknoiseNW on Jan 14, 2012 6:17 PM PST up reply actions

Hasn't played out that way

The only picks he gets around late are the down screen curls…in that case, the paired defender should “show”, allow Batum to close, and rotate back on his man….the Blazers don’t always do that well….

Law of Logical Argument
Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.

by blacknoiseNW on Jan 14, 2012 6:22 PM PST up reply actions

No

Hes not out of it mentally he’s pulled from the game buy Nate. Nate has many players playing scared over the years.

Yep.

#52--------I believe in Greg Oden

by annthefan on Jan 14, 2012 6:16 PM PST up reply actions

I think so too

he’s fighting for P.T. and a new contract, the effort is there

by Peteyhasnohead on Jan 14, 2012 6:18 PM PST up reply actions

Is this the first time Batum has scored 20 or more?

by AP_18 on Jan 14, 2012 6:16 PM PST reply actions

Dumb move

I’d rate him a 5th or 6th rounder at best….
