Gameday Open Thread: Clippers vs. Blazers
Revenge is a dish best served on a basketball court. Tonight, the Los Angeles Clippers bring their new nicknames to the Rose Garden, to play the Portland Trail Blazers (Tip off 7:10pm). The Blazers could use a win over the Clippers to show they can beat them, and to continue their strong start. So, what do you expect to see tonight?
Injury report: All's quiet.

I say Zers all the time, not on here though
I don’t understand all of the hate. People should be able to call the Blazers whatever they want without being called out.
Hot sauce in my bag.
I think, though
that ’Zers reminds me too much of something Brent Musberger would say. I hate that guy.
But I suppose I should say officially that it’s not nice to ride someone for omission of a syllable in a proper name.

I really don't say it much anymore
I have since moved on to try new things. Nothing has stuck however. For now I’m sticking with Blazers. The Brent Musberger call is fairly spot on however. Now that’s all I’m going to be able to think about every time I hear it. In a perfect world Gus Johnson would announce every game.
Hot sauce in my bag.
You are more then welcome to call them what you want...
…and people…including me… are free to not like it.
It sounds very “O-Live” to me.

Are we the only decent team the Clips have beat so far?
They did blow out GS and Houston. Close win against the Bucks and a cake schedule. I still think we gave the first Clips game away. Hopefully the Blazers can prove that tonight.
Yeah we are… They haven’t even played a back2back yet and they think there good

they played bulls and spurs and lost both, so yeah.

Huge game tonight going to find out a lot about this team
by Rosecity503 on Jan 10, 2012 6:21 PM PST via mobile reply actions
I agree with an asterisk to massage what we're going to find out or not
This is the last of the “need to win in order to show you’re serious about being good” games for a while. In other words, it’s not that a win will propel the estimation of them upwards. A loss would send it down a little bit. So basically they need a win to maintain and verify the course they’ve set so far.
Tomorrow’s Orlando game plus those road games are all of the “Win if you want to be considered great” variety. A good team could lose plenty of those games and still be considered good. But a significant number of wins in the next six games would begin to make the case that the Blazers are ready to be more than just good…that they can overcome adversity and their own weaknesses. That would more than verify the course, it would improve the trajectory.
Naturally no games are must-win or all-encompassing this early in the season. But the wins and losses in the next few games should show us where the Blazers are for real.
—Dave
The Blazers need to play well tonight
Or more accurately, this is a win-no-matter-what situation. Hope they come out fired up and ready to go. It’s revenge. It’s a hot conference opponent. It’s a beatable opponent if you play well but who can also take you if you screw up. This is another nice test to see how the team will react. Pretty or ugly, all that matters here is the “W”.
—Dave
I can't believe you guys added another rule.

For a second
Sadly I can’t stay for the game. But I’m halfway pumped for tonight’s game and expect a good showing (or at least a “W”) so I needed somewhere to let that out.
—Dave
#blowthemout
No mercy please! The new Clipper bandwagoners are freaking me out! SILENCE the MADNESS! lol
If the Clips do win tonight
I think we begin to ask if they have our number. They’re just BEGGING to be beaten. This team should be able to do it.
—Dave
Yeah I'm hoping they don't turn into one of "those teams"
that we just can’t beat for some cryptic reason.
BTW if you're ever not sure...
Go to the front page, on the left column, there’s a “More SB Nation Blogs” section…. expand out any given sport, and boom, there are all the team blogs.
Clips fans need to stop this griffen is better than LMA talk and they gonna find out why tonight
by Rosecity503 on Jan 10, 2012 6:37 PM PST via mobile reply actions
Blake's defensive numbers alone have been terrible so far
The guy is much better than LMA at being a complete defensive liability.
I dont think he is better now, or at least not in any significant way
I do think Blake will end up being a better player then LMA, though he is a very good player himself.
To me this is one of those situations where
if the two guys wore the opposite uniforms everybody here and there would think the opposite is true. Griffin is good. LMA is good. They’re different kinds of good. What matters is how each fits with his team and how many wins are generated by their goodness.
—Dave

They don't turn over so much
and we’re pretty bad at that. But we’re better at getting defensive rebounds and they aren’t so great at that. They also suck at free throws. I feel like we are pretty evenly matched.
Out of curiosity...
how come the link for streaming the game on the Blazers site isn’t posted? They are still doing the free trial thru the 11th for the Comcast streaming. I’m not real sure on how many of us qualify for it since you have to be in a certain region but I was just curious just in case other people weren’t aware of this…
It's all good. Glad I could be helpful.
Glad there is still a free-trial going on because I am half tempted to buy the subscription if I like what I see.

Most Power rankings had them top 7
Most common spot was probably 5, so yeah they look legit.
I dont think we will beat you guys this time around. Gerald Wallace and Crawford will torch us in this game.
I bet at least one of them does- probably both do
I was shocked at how ineffective wallace was against us last game. Since he should be able to abuse Butler, I would be shocked to see him under a 15-5 game this time around.
in our 2 losses he's had 0 FG. So yeah pretty weird, I think he'll be ready tonight.
Plus it’s a home and the crowd always is a huge boost.

Johnson, Johnson, Smith, Smith, Thomas, Williams, and Babbitt: the Blazer's law firm.
Is lob City
kind of a rip off of Rip City? Same goes for Loud City? I guess the only thing in common is City, I just am looking for any way to call out either of these new organizations. Yes, the Clippers are a new organization. Has anyone heard of them before a couple years ago?
Hot sauce in my bag.
Lob City and Loud City are lame concepts
And they don’t have a Shonely behind them.
by manfredi on Jan 10, 2012 6:52 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
For some reason, what bugs me is that they're corporate catchphrases
“Rip City” was started organically during a broadcast and grew naturally. It wasn’t a group of marketers talking to the front office and saying “Hey, let’s just use the phrase, ‘Loud City’! The fans will go for it and will believe they’re the loudest!” Of course, my favorite it Miami’s “Fan up!”, which entertains me to no end.
It seems you’re not allowed to start a team or an era without a new catchphrase, basically getting the fans to latch onto a random phrase they’ve been told to accept.
Agreed
We are just as guilty of this as anyone however. We change ours every couple years depending on injuries and team concepts. What’s next, Run with Us?
Hot sauce in my bag.
Oh we're totally guilty of it too.
I definitely should have noted that. We fall under the “new era slogan” thing a lot. It’s like there’s a marketing book handed to every NBA team and they just follow the instructions.
Lob City is pretty organic
when you think about it. Griff said it off the cuff and now hates the phrase anyway.
Johnson, Johnson, Smith, Smith, Thomas, Williams, and Babbitt: the Blazer's law firm.
Dave...
This stuff with Gerald Wallace not extending his contract…is that just to hold out for more money or is this something we’re worried about?
Who knows?
Likely it’s what he said. He wants to keep his options open. Is this really the best fit for him? Is the team committed to and capable of his style of play? Is he going to be a featured player on this team? How much money is involved? How well will the team do? Frankly if I were him I’d want my options open too until I saw more.
What’s more, I think the Blazers should keep their options open too. I love Gerald Wallace more than any other current Blazer. But I want those questions answered from a team perspective before I go throwing money at an aging, physical small forward with an injury history. The new luxury tax rules make you pay heavily for mistakes. Even a well-meaning mistake is still a mistake. I want to know how Gerald fits and whether he’s integral to Portland’s long-term plans.
I still think there’s a possibility of trading him at some point as well, depending on how things go.
—Dave
Good points
I feel like if he’s doing what he’s doing for us now consistently he’s worth every penny. He drives us to this speed we need, we’re so much slower without him on the floor. He’s like this energy bomb that gets everyone turned up. If we don’t have him we need someone like him.
Probably wants a longer contract
I think we can only offer a 2yr extension?
Nate is too tight with the line-up
Bring in Craig Smith tonight for at least one really hard foul on Blake.

they’re still mentally on summer break.

Just pick and choose what NBA rules you want to enforce
call Crawford for a carry that every NBA player does and not call a step in on an inbound play. Unreal.
Hot sauce in my bag.
some pretty easy calls being missed
hope the reffing improves in the 2nd half
why did batum pass it twice
he shoulda shot it
