Gameday Open Thread: Clippers vs. Blazers

Revenge is a dish best served on a basketball court. Tonight, the Los Angeles Clippers bring their new nicknames to the Rose Garden, to play the Portland Trail Blazers (Tip off 7:10pm). The Blazers could use a win over the Clippers to show they can beat them, and to continue their strong start. So, what do you expect to see tonight?

Injury report: All's quiet.

I say Zers all the time, not on here though

I don’t understand all of the hate. People should be able to call the Blazers whatever they want without being called out.

I think, though

that ’Zers reminds me too much of something Brent Musberger would say. I hate that guy.

But I suppose I should say officially that it’s not nice to ride someone for omission of a syllable in a proper name.

by Dave on Jan 10, 2012 6:35 PM PST up reply actions

I really don't say it much anymore

I have since moved on to try new things. Nothing has stuck however. For now I’m sticking with Blazers. The Brent Musberger call is fairly spot on however. Now that’s all I’m going to be able to think about every time I hear it. In a perfect world Gus Johnson would announce every game.

You are more then welcome to call them what you want...

…and people…including me… are free to not like it.

It sounds very “O-Live” to me.

Are we the only decent team the Clips have beat so far?

They did blow out GS and Houston. Close win against the Bucks and a cake schedule. I still think we gave the first Clips game away. Hopefully the Blazers can prove that tonight.

by poorwebguy on Jan 10, 2012 6:20 PM PST reply actions

Yeah we are… They haven’t even played a back2back yet and they think there good

yeah they do. Beat us without Evans and Billups so they think they’re too much for the Blazers to handle now.

first b2b is tomorrow, us tonight and miami tomorrow. Pretty nice sched so far.

I agree with an asterisk to massage what we're going to find out or not

This is the last of the “need to win in order to show you’re serious about being good” games for a while. In other words, it’s not that a win will propel the estimation of them upwards. A loss would send it down a little bit. So basically they need a win to maintain and verify the course they’ve set so far.

Tomorrow’s Orlando game plus those road games are all of the “Win if you want to be considered great” variety. A good team could lose plenty of those games and still be considered good. But a significant number of wins in the next six games would begin to make the case that the Blazers are ready to be more than just good…that they can overcome adversity and their own weaknesses. That would more than verify the course, it would improve the trajectory.

Naturally no games are must-win or all-encompassing this early in the season. But the wins and losses in the next few games should show us where the Blazers are for real.

by Dave on Jan 10, 2012 6:27 PM PST up reply actions

The Blazers need to play well tonight

Or more accurately, this is a win-no-matter-what situation. Hope they come out fired up and ready to go. It’s revenge. It’s a hot conference opponent. It’s a beatable opponent if you play well but who can also take you if you screw up. This is another nice test to see how the team will react. Pretty or ugly, all that matters here is the “W”.

Blake's defensive numbers alone have been terrible so far

The guy is much better than LMA at being a complete defensive liability.

by poorwebguy on Jan 10, 2012 6:41 PM PST up reply actions

He may be

No big deal if the Blazers finish with a better record overall or go farther in the playoffs. They’re more than welcome to the “better” player as long as Portland wins more.

—Dave

by Dave on Jan 10, 2012 6:48 PM PST up reply actions

I dont think he is better now, or at least not in any significant way

I do think Blake will end up being a better player then LMA, though he is a very good player himself.

by NewCavsfan on Jan 10, 2012 6:54 PM PST up reply actions

To me this is one of those situations where

if the two guys wore the opposite uniforms everybody here and there would think the opposite is true. Griffin is good. LMA is good. They’re different kinds of good. What matters is how each fits with his team and how many wins are generated by their goodness.

They don't turn over so much

and we’re pretty bad at that. But we’re better at getting defensive rebounds and they aren’t so great at that. They also suck at free throws. I feel like we are pretty evenly matched.

Out of curiosity...

how come the link for streaming the game on the Blazers site isn’t posted? They are still doing the free trial thru the 11th for the Comcast streaming. I’m not real sure on how many of us qualify for it since you have to be in a certain region but I was just curious just in case other people weren’t aware of this…

Is lob City

kind of a rip off of Rip City? Same goes for Loud City? I guess the only thing in common is City, I just am looking for any way to call out either of these new organizations. Yes, the Clippers are a new organization. Has anyone heard of them before a couple years ago?

Lob City and Loud City are lame concepts

And they don’t have a Shonely behind them.

by manfredi on Jan 10, 2012 6:52 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

For some reason, what bugs me is that they're corporate catchphrases

“Rip City” was started organically during a broadcast and grew naturally. It wasn’t a group of marketers talking to the front office and saying “Hey, let’s just use the phrase, ‘Loud City’! The fans will go for it and will believe they’re the loudest!” Of course, my favorite it Miami’s “Fan up!”, which entertains me to no end.

It seems you’re not allowed to start a team or an era without a new catchphrase, basically getting the fans to latch onto a random phrase they’ve been told to accept.

by Timmay! on Jan 10, 2012 6:53 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed

We are just as guilty of this as anyone however. We change ours every couple years depending on injuries and team concepts. What’s next, Run with Us?

Oh we're totally guilty of it too.

by Timmay! on Jan 10, 2012 6:59 PM PST up reply actions

Lob City is pretty organic

when you think about it. Griff said it off the cuff and now hates the phrase anyway.

by CleBlazer on Jan 10, 2012 6:55 PM PST up reply actions

Who knows?

Likely it’s what he said. He wants to keep his options open. Is this really the best fit for him? Is the team committed to and capable of his style of play? Is he going to be a featured player on this team? How much money is involved? How well will the team do? Frankly if I were him I’d want my options open too until I saw more.

What’s more, I think the Blazers should keep their options open too. I love Gerald Wallace more than any other current Blazer. But I want those questions answered from a team perspective before I go throwing money at an aging, physical small forward with an injury history. The new luxury tax rules make you pay heavily for mistakes. Even a well-meaning mistake is still a mistake. I want to know how Gerald fits and whether he’s integral to Portland’s long-term plans.

I still think there’s a possibility of trading him at some point as well, depending on how things go.

Good points

I feel like if he’s doing what he’s doing for us now consistently he’s worth every penny. He drives us to this speed we need, we’re so much slower without him on the floor. He’s like this energy bomb that gets everyone turned up. If we don’t have him we need someone like him.
