Portland Tribune: Getting to know the real Joey Crawford
Kerry Eggers talks with referee Joey Crawford, a "warm, funny guy with a heart of gold."
What can I say? He actually sounds like a likeable guy in the interview.
---------------
Crawford has brought his wife to Portland on the occasional road trip through the years. How does she handle sitting in the Rose Garden and listening to fans’ catcalls directed toward her husband?
"She’s good," he says, laughing again. "My kids are the ones I worry about. They’re adults now and have that Philly craziness about them. If somebody’s taking a shot at their father, they scream back. I tell them, ‘Those people paid their money; leave them alone.’ "

I've seen enough of joey crawford to last a lifetime
I certainly don’t need to be reading about him in the offseason, telling us about what a great guy he is.
Well, he's saying the right things.
"Our profession has totally changed for the better since I first came in," Crawford says. "Some people complain about the scrutiny, but I like it. You have to keep an open mind to growing every year and getting better. Once you stop trying to get better and thinking you have it made, you stop growing. You have to be able to admit — which is very hard to do — that you were wrong. You can grow from that."
I have a tremendous amount of respect for that attitude. I certainly don’t see enough of it in my own work environment. I have two takeaway thoughts here:
1. It’s too bad that Stern doesn’t seem to want or be able to show the self-reflection that goes on within NBA officiating. The tight-lipped, behind-closed-doors approach is SO lame and outdated. I’m sure the goal is to protect the officials from the slings and arrows of backseat refs, but I think it’s counterproductive.
2. I realize that Joey Crawford is a widely hated ref. Is he universally hated? In other words, is he disliked by fans regardless of market? If true, wouldn’t that be an indicator that he actually is fair, both in his application of rules that other refs left slide, and in being consistent from one team to another?
"You can pretty much flip a coin to see which Portland team will show up: the dark-horse world-beaters or the mixed-up eggbeaters" - Dave
I don't want to know any refs name, so no, I guess I'm not a Crawford fan...
Refs should be completely invisible if they are doing their job right.
Joey holds grudges.
I just don't believe this
Has Crawford ever let his feelings about a player affect a call?
"No," he says. "You’re just looking at shirts. They bring a stat sheet into the locker room after a game. You see so-and-so had 40 points, and you didn’t know he had four.
And the Tim Duncan (plus the NBA) agree
Me after hearing of a Rudy Hardwood Classic Jersey going for $45:"Take the "RNANDEZ" part off....and sew on a "LTON and you are good to go"."
All call BS on this one
Are calls made differently near the end of a close game?
"No," he says. "We’re graded on the calls and non-calls we make. What you’re trying to do is stay consistent from the first exhibition game to your final game. That’s what you’re striving for.
Playoffs anyone? Playoff reffing is notoriously different and yet this clown says : “Nope…all the same”

Joey, Mr; Stern is calling...
Joey? Nice job. Have a $1000 dinner on me… usual back channels…
The guy can give an interview...
I’ll leave it at that…
The smarter you are, the more likely you are to be tripping balls at any given moment.
Bring Back Dre.
I kind of feel for Joey Crawford.
Having to deal with idiot fans ripping him mercilessly has to gnaw at him.
And yeah, fans are a collection of idiots.
"I Am Mine"
Fans > Idiots
Idiots are, by definition, very low on the IQ scale..
Fanatical followers of teams, however, may have very high IQ’s, just like to be fans…
In short, fans don’t have to be idiots…
Read Tim Donaghy's book...
if you want to know how “nice” NBA refs are (and Stern, as well). Nobody believed Jose Canseco in the beginning, either.
