offers up his previews and predictions for this week's EuroBasket tournament. He selects France -- which includes Portland Trail Blazers forward Nicolas Batum -- to make the finals, but lose to Spain.
Here's his team preview
of France and here's his group-by-group predictions
France’s journey through their preparation games is a pretty interesting one. They started their pre-EuroBasket schedule blowing out Canada twice, but followed it up with a game against Spain and they were promptly blown out, losing by more than 20 points. However, after that loss, France went undefeated, including a win against a tough Serbian team. One of the reason for the flip in performance is because France started to figure out their offense and gain their footing. France has a number of solid players on their team, but no one offensive option that can create for themselves (a lot of second bananas). Noticing that, the French coaching staff implemented a lot of sets that involved movement off of the basketball, making it difficult for the defense to stay in front and opening things up for their offense.
Without anyone out there to create for themselves, France’s offense relies on screens off of the ball and movement off of the ball, putting players in position to score the basketball.
Before doing this scouting report, the one game from France that I did see was their game against Spain, and they didn’t look good at all. After watching the rest of their games for the purpose of this scout, I came away really impressed with France and their offense. If they can produce enough and score enough out of these sets and be consistant, they have a chance to make it pretty far in EuroBasket.
