Transcript and Video: Blazers C Arvydas Sabonis Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame Induction Speech
RELATED: Videos introducing Arvydas Sabonis at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a transcript of the speech given by former Portland Trail Blazers center Arvydas Sabonis during his induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday night. Sabonis was accompanied by former Blazers center and Hall of Fame member Bill Walton.
"Thank you, Bill. Thank you. Today is a very special day for me. For my country. And I'm very proud to be here. I would like to say thank you for the Hall of Fame, for my family, whole family, my parents, my friends, my teammates, my coaches. Special thanks I would like to say for Portland Trail Blazers and Blazers medical team for believing in me and helping me after serious injury when I got to come back to professional basketball. To be Olympic champion and to be tonight here together with Bill Walton and all of you, thank you very much."
By my count, Sabonis's speech clocked in at 48 seconds and was 103 words long.
It is quite interesting that he specifically mentioned the Blazers medical team.
Here's video of Sabonis' speech.

Short And Sweet. Love You Sabonis, you're the man

Maybe it's just me, but I much prefer the longer, more emotional speeches.
On that note, kudos to Dennis Rodman. As always, “The Worm” didn’t disappoint.

Sabas!
short and sweet. very nice comments from Arvydas!
thanks so much for your concern, but i do not require your validation in order to feel free to submit my comment.
Definitely agree, extremely well deserved honor for the big fella
The What If questions about him are no another fascinating aspect of the story as well. What if he had come over in ’86? How many banners would that team have added to the Coliseum and then later to the Rose Garden? If he came then, where would he have been ranked in the All time best players? What if he never had the debilitating injuries, how much greater would he have been? I never saw a big man with so many uncanny guard like qualities, from his possessing phenomenal passing skills to his shooting range he was truly a one of a kind IMO. Congrats Sabas, we miss ya…
There would have been a statue outside the Rose Garden
It would have been “The house that Our-Vydas built”

Congratulations big man
It is well deserved
Me after hearing of a Rudy Hardwood Classic Jersey going for $45:"Take the "RNANDEZ" part off....and sew on a "LTON and you are good to go"."
He Looks Great!
Lets bring him back @ the age of 46! He’s still better then half the centers in the league!
His wife looks pretty good too!

Man...Oh man! Glad to see his career being celebrated.
All the stories, features, and clips of late have brought back a rush of all the emotion & excitement he brought to the Blazers. It was such a great time to be a fan of the team, and I am so glad I did not miss it. We were lucky to have such a great player be apart of the Portland Trail Blazers history. THANK YOU ARVYDAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

World champion
The blazers were lucky to have Sabonis. Class act and world champion. Smith was right in the video, no other center could pass or shoot the way he could.
Well deserved.
What a great guy and great player,
a man of few words (at least in Englsh) but he was the key to that contender Blazers team.
I remember thinking on any game, “is Sanbonis playing?”… that was the big factor.
Love him together with Walton, two of my favorite all time players.
Really nice to see them both getting recognition and honor.
Someday, in a better world, there will be no injuries, and no aging. I want to see them play again.
Wake me when the game is on.
Maybe, someday, both Walton and Sabonis
can bring Greg in.
Yes, it could happen.
Wake me when the game is on.
Bring Greg in to where? Center heaven?
Oh, please God no. This isn’t going to happen to the tune of the Ewok Theme Song, is it?
I guess I AM slightly intrigued by whether or not the Sabas ghost leaning back against the heavenly scorers’ table will be the young USSR one who won a title, or the older one donning the Blazers’ jersey.
But yeah, hopefully Greg has a few years of actual basketball before he is absorbed back into the living force.

well, I was referring to bringing Greg into the hall of fame...
not familiar with Ewok.
Wake me when the game is on.
That would be awesome
Walton & Sabonis represent the yin & yang of keeping a 7ft Blazers bigman healthy. Walton thought he was mistreated, yet Sabas went out of his way to thank the medical staff of the Blazers – who managed to keep him healthy after Soviet Russia ran him into the dirt.
I really like the idea.
Get it done... Paul.
maybe bring over yao...heh

All of them.
"How many banners would that team have added to the Coliseum and then later to the Rose Garden?"
LOTS. Barkley would still call us a jump shooting team though.
Yay for Sabas!! Amazing to know how good he was when he pretty much had no knees. Best passing and long range center in the game. He absolutely deserves to be in the Hall.

Congrats to Sabas.
Well earned. It’s a shame, as Jack McCallum said (and numerous others), that we didn’t get to see a young Sabonis. That would have been something to behold.
Also, I can’t believe I’m hearing Sabas speaking English. I can’t remember a time where he wouldn’t speak Lithuanian while eschewing English.
No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
Congrats big man !
Greg watch video of Sabas in action. Pay attention to those black things on his knees.

Classic Sabonis
Yes congratulations to Sabonis on what I think is well deserved recognition. I’d say more, but in honor of Sabas…I’m keeping my praise short and to the point.
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"
Yeah....No one wants to upstage Arvydas by saying more than he did. LOL

Sabonis dunks right in Jordan's face
as far as Hall of Fame speeches go…way to show the rest of the league how to be classy #11
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
In 2009, Michael Jordan's Hall of Fame speech wasn't even the most acerbic, bitter diatribe.
That belongs to none other than Peter Vecsey: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tY6NlVdI0A
Vecsey’s speech, however, has impacted the voting process, especially when it comes to ABA legends.
Yet, the funniest part of the whole thing is when Vecsey gets cut off at the end when he’s thanking his family.
"I Am Mine"
Rain Man 1
Being a Portland fan then, we all knew how good he was.. His rookie year, they asked him if he liked his season and the weather in Portland. Like the man of few words, he relied, “I leave tomorrow”.
congrats to Sabas
he’s prolly best Europian player ever played in NBA
and i can understand why he gave thanks to Blazers medical staff -when he did get on Blazers team noone could even say that he will even properly walk again
-i remember seeing him when i was a kid and he was in his early 20ies -he was so dominant that it’s really shame that he had to play his NBA game with legs like this and in his 30ies -though he still had amazing impact -if only you could see this running jumping backboard crushing Sabas that he was back in a days

huge respect to Arvydas
Even if you do succeed most people wouldn't notice anyway.
The speech gets an A
Too bad they didn’t use a translator, though. It would have been fun to hear Sabas talk more extensively about his great basketball career—in Portland and abroad.
I still believe in Greg Oden. The Blazers' medical staff? Not so much.
I'd change my handle to "bringback'09," but I'm too lazy.
Ben, a few days ago you posted the reason why he would specifically thank the medical staff
"I’m satisfied with my career," says Sabonis, 46, who lives in Lithuania, runs a youth basketball school and is part owner of the Zalgiris club, for whom he began his pro career in 1981. "Maybe one regret – that nobody stopped me when I first got injured and explained to me to watch for the symptoms."
He was almost a sports invalid after playing through his knee injuries before coming to Portland. Probably not only the treatment he got was better, the Blazers also trusted him that he could still contribute even on balky knees and that there was no use in using up all that was left within a season. Whatever they possibly did wrong with Walton and later Blazers rushing them or misdiagnosing things, they did a lot right with Sabas.
