When the NBA Season Resumes, Who Gets Dealt? An In-Depth Look w/ Poll

No signings or trades are allowed until a new agreement between owners and players is reached. When it eventually does end, however long it may take, deals could heat up quickly. Here's who should get moving when the custodians of the game find the keys to the gym, turn on the lights and let the action start, via ESPN:

1. Which team must make a major move this offseason?

Lakers must get younger by moving Pau Gasol; the Magic must move some of their awful contracts too.

2. Pick: Tyson Chandler, Marc Gasol, Nene, Yao Ming or Greg Oden.

Nene is overwhelmingly chosen, with Tyson Chandler being a cheaper alternative, and Marc Gasol being my own personal favorite.

3. Who's the best non-center available this summer?

David West first and foremost (he's put up 19-8 nightly for five seasons now), then Wilson Chandler (a cheap alternative), Caron Butler, restricted FA Thadeus Young, Andrei Kirilenko, and Tayshaun Prince.

4. Bargain hunting: Who's the best buy on the market?

JR Smith (could be Jamal Crawford 2.0 at about 60 percent the cost), Marcus Thornton (the 24-year-old former second-round pick averaged 21.9 points per game over the Kings' final 18 games), Jonas Jerebko, our own Joel Prybilla (since he'll be a VERY cheap veteran), Troy Murphy, and even Anthony Carter is mentioned.

5. Use the Trade Machine to make a deal that should happen.

Orlando gets: Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom, Steve Blake, Shannon Brown
Los Angeles Lakers get: Dwight Howard, Gilbert Arenas

San Antonio gets: Travis Outlaw
New Jersey gets: Richard Jefferson

Atlanta gets: Monta Ellis
Golden State gets: Josh Smith

Charlotte gets: Paul Millsap
Utah gets: D.J. Augustin, Matt Carroll

Orlando gets: LeBron James, Mike Miller
Miami gets: Dwight Howard, J.J. Redick

Please check out http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=5-on-5-110704 for more info on the topics discussed above, noting that this post is very much a summation of a much longer and detailed ESPN 5 on 5 article.

Oden will be back..don't need Gasoline

JR is a shooter…Nate can manage his head and we’ll get points when needed for cheap. When Oden is rocking, poor Marc G would be getting blisters on his butt from sitting on the bench. we’re Oden and a 3-point artist away from a championship team.

Chandler earned a pay day this year.

I don't remember him doing to much last year when cp3 was hurt

But he is a strong true power forward that can knock down jumpers. West vs Aldridge battles have always been classic. I was at the one this year when they both went over 30 but LA took over in the fourth. That putback slam over everyone was probably my favorite aldridge play of the year

Tyson Chandler

if possible, but probably not.

Get it done... Paul.

Dallas ain't letting go for cheap. After years of cycling overpaid centers they finally got one that is perfect for them

Loves to do the dirty work, cleans up those jumpshots and finishes hard at the rim when teams help off him. he also serves the same role for dirk that lucas did for walton

If Oden can comeback and play that same roll for us, I'd be stoked

At this point, we don’t need him to come back and a dominant back to the basket player. if he can come in and set hard screens, roll strong to the basket, play with energy and work off scraps, then we should be one of the best front courts in the nba

Some of the trades those guys suggest make no sense. Utah needs Augustin and Carroll instead of their Millsap how exactly?

Also LA will trade Odom 1, Artest 2 and Gasol 3 would be my guess even though Gasol disappointed in the playoffs. They don’t “need” to trade him at all. The cap won’t crash down immediately, it will be a process over a few years.

I don't get why everyone thinks that Gasol is finished.

If I see one guy to build around on that team right now, it would be Pau. Look at his track record as a laker. 1rst year- lakers go from fighting to get into the playoffs to going to the finals and losing to the big three. 2nd year – championship, blows the west away in regular season and make the magic look bad. 3rd year- championship, again blows out west and saves kobe’s butt in game 7 against boston. He had a bad fourth year but his team combusted. Bottom line is he is still one of the most skilled 7 footers in league and Lakers are just about unbeatable when he is playing right

Who else could LA build around?

Their only real option is Bynum, and IMO that isn’t much of an option. Unless they got the keys to the candy store, LA would be wise to keep Gasol.

LA got swept and Gasol forget to show up?

That was certainly not all Gasol but he seemed to dog it a bit this year and especially against Dallas.

They said on Sports Center I think

That supposedly Gasol was mad at Kobe because Kobe’s wife broke up Gasol and his long time Fiance. Sounds like some TMZ to me, but if its that big of a deal…maybe Gasol wants out?

I REALLLLLY hope the l*kers don't get Dwight Howard

Instead, I’d like him to be a Blazer.

And/or, for the fakers to all get locked into a room and have to eat each other to survive.

Everybody keeps saying Howard's going to LA

I don’t see it unless it’s a trade. LAs in the worst cap position in the league, and I don’t see Howard taking small change to play with a rapidly-deteriorating Kobe.
I can see Portland putting together a nice package trade-wise; whether it would be their best offer…Of course, I can also see Orlando demanding we take Arenas. Not worth it in that case.
We’ll clear Camby off the books after next year. Hopefully we’ll be able to amnesty Roy off the books. If Dwight wants more help, Felton/Matthews/Batum/Crash/LMA (and God willing, GO) will be looking mighty fine to him.

Everyone is sure that Dwight is walking to lakers, just like everyone was sure James was walking to new york

Laker fans always say everyone wants to play in LA, but since Shaq no star has walked to LA. Just a bunch of ring chasers.

No one in the world can beat me at RBI baseball 3(nes).

Miami needs to try and make a deal for Dwight

Either Bosh or Lebron. Dwade/DHoward would be much like that Miami team that won a championship. Except they would still have no bench. I really have no clue were DHoward will go. I feel like he wont go to LA cause he doesn’t want to follow in Shaq’s foot steps. I think with Amare and Melo that NYK wouldn’t be a good fit. If he really wants a ring, OKC, Boston, Dallas, maybe PHX, maybe Portland, New Jersey might not be a bad fit with Derron Williams. It’s tough to say…but I really dont see him going to the LAL or NYK. I guess the LAC could be an option, I would love to see the Clippers rise and the L@kers fall.

Chandler

best defender in this group hands done. Despite him being a bit of a punk against the blazers in the past I would love to have him. Nene and then Gasol. A resounding NO to JR. Nate would hate that dude.

by blazethenugs on Jul 5, 2011 5:58 PM PDT reply actions

Greg Oden (healthy) is by far the best defender in this group

Chandler had a good playoffs. But after all these years of waiting. how do you project that he will maintain his intensity? Or was this contract year all we will see?

by lee3022 on Jul 6, 2011 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd take Greg Oden...

If not him, then I’d take Marc Gasol.

by Aaron Sass on Jul 6, 2011 4:39 PM PDT reply actions

Not reasonable that we get any but Oden

We do not have the desire to pursue players that we gut the core for,. And Howard will not want to be here.

by lee3022 on Jul 6, 2011 8:40 PM PDT reply actions

That's a nice list of centers

but none of them are realistic options. I would say there is a better chance of Oden playing 82 games (or however many there are) than us signing any of those centers. And West is going to start somewhere, and I’d rather not pair him of all PFs with LMA.

I think its more likely we pick up a Juwan Howard/Chris Johnson type to sit third string and hope we don’t need to use him too much.

Portland could coast along with their superior talent and stay right with us. Now that Portland woke up, the hammer cometh down.
