Camby would be my model for Lanky finesse C.
Ben Wallace would be my model for Defensive specialist.
Pryz is my idea of a classic pivot.
Inside/Outside C would be a modern day Sabonis.
Defensive specialist...
Any time you can find someone who can truly effect the game on defense down low you have to go after that guy. Thats why we took the risk of drafting Oden over Durant. They are game changers & playing next to a scoring PF like Aldridge they won’t be asked to do too much offensively.
With that said I have always been a sucker for a post player with passing skills. I wish Channing Frye could have shot the ball the way he does in Phoenix now because we could have really used him – a 3pt shooting center is interesting but definitely not a player you want to start.
Draft Reggie Jackson/Justin Harper/Kenneth Faried
Sign Reggie Williams/Kenyon Martin
Trade for Anthony Randolph
My preference is for a classic pivot
Either
1. Marc Gasol by sign and trade in the event Memphis can’t keep him.
2. Biyombo, should we get up to the 10-15 range in the draft.
3. Beg and bribe Freeland to come over and be groomed for a spot in the PF/C rotation.
4. Vucevic, should we stay put at 21.
I think Aldridge has the ability to go inside or out depending on matchups, post pairing, and game needs. He is the real deal. I’d like to see our defense shored up in the paint and still get put-backs. No stone hands for me. If they can’t catch a pass in the key they are no good in my book. Therefore i want a classic Pivot.
I like Chuck Hayes and Fesenko.
Hayes can do a little of everything but excels on the defensive end. He is under-sized but still a strong rebounder and a very good passer. Fesenko is a big body to throw around which we don’t have plus he’d be dirt cheap.
I’d prefer a good all-around Center but those aren’t readily available to teams like ours. I’d look to the draft to take Vucevic in the 1st round and Greg Smith in the 2nd round. Both can play the PF spot as well so we’ll be sorted at both big positions.
Hayes would be an awesome tandem with Camby at the center spot.
Hayes can hit em low & Camby can hit em high! Not sure if he takes the MLE or not a lot depends on the new CBA :\
Draft Reggie Jackson/Justin Harper/Kenneth Faried
Sign Reggie Williams/Kenyon Martin
Trade for Anthony Randolph
I'd love to have...
DeAndre Jordan, Nene, or Tyson Chandler. Someone who can clean up a lot of rebounds and put down some easy tip in’s and dunks etc. I think we’re looking for someone who can consistently get around 10pts-10rebounds.
If there's any way to get Nené, the Blazers should go for it.
Maybe if they trade Camby for a pick (Biyombo?), that will free up enough cap space to make a bid.
Nené is just the kind of dynamic offensive threat that could push this team over the top. With both LMA and Nené attacking the paint, there’s not a whole lot other teams could do. Packing the paint could work for stretches, but I haven’t seen anybody who can keep Nené out for long, and LMA’s shooting ability thwarts that technique (a 3pt shooting PG would help too).
Otherwise, Gasol would a great option; I think Memphis is going to try to keep him though. That publicity about them having the better Gasol probably boosted their fanbase in Memphis, which needs to happen for them to keep that team. If there’s any way to keep him around, Memphis will do it, maybe at the expense of other key players (Conley, Allen, Mayo).
Turiaf seems like the most economical choice this offseason (could probably be signed for the MLE), and could be a great answer to the backup PF/C conundrum when Oden returns. While I would love to have a new franchise center to get excited about, I think Turiaf is the wisest choice all around.
Still, if they can get Nené…
Stealth > Wealth
I'm going to focus on back-ups.
I’m assuming we’re still rolling the dice on Oden and retaining Camby and Aldridge and need a solid talent/toughness infusion to fill in at both spots for 10-30mpg.
Here are the guys I like that might be attainable and willing to take that role:
Joel Przybilla!
Kyrylo Fesenko
Erick Dampier
Jeff Foster
Nazr Mohammed
DeAndre Jordan
Dan Gadzuric
Kwame Brown
Etan Thomas
Question & comment...
What value does Greg Oden have in a sign & trade situation? Can we get a center who has been healthy & productive the last few years? Nene? Gortat? Okefor? Hibbert? If you have a chance you have to look hard at it.
I’d welcome free agents like Dalembert/Chandler but neither of those guys will come to Portland. Marc Gasol is a situation I really can’t predict, Memphis is a notoriously cheap franchise, they already have signed Randolph/Conley/Gay, signing Gasol certainly puts them over the cap even though it would be a legal move because of their Bird rights. That leaves you with shorter post players like K-Mart/Chuck Hayes(either of which I would welcome). After those two it gets a little murky, the post above mine by SaveOden has a solid list of them.
Regardless of what type of center any of us wants to play next to Aldridge, one thing we know for sure is we can’t keep playing him against centers. I’d also like to stay away from playing Gerald Wallace extended minutes at the 4 spot unless the match up absolutely demands it.
Draft Reggie Jackson/Justin Harper/Kenneth Faried
Sign Reggie Williams/Kenyon Martin
Trade for Anthony Randolph
I agree with keeping Wallace at the 3
and would add that Lamarcus wouldn’t be so crispy burnt by playoff time should he not have to play against Cs for 10 minutes on top of his PF duties.
I can’t remember which thread I put it in, but I proposed a megadeal that sent Oden, Batum, and Miller to Minnie for Ridnour, Randolph, and the #s 2 and 21. Don’t know if it’s realistic, or doable, but they certainly have the cap space. Or maybe a S&T of Oden and Batum for Biedrins and Curry… Funny thing is i don’t feel cold-blooded for wanting to give up on Oden. He hasn’t been in Portland for months, has he?
Fesenko is the only person on the above list that I’d consider. The rest are toast or have major red flags to their attitudes.
i'd like this guy that came out of ohio state a few years ago

That guy is a one of a kind monster.
It would be nice to have Marc Gasol as a backup though, just in case Oden continues to be the unlucky kind of monster.

BIIYYYYOOMMMMMMBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
" Yeah, this is pretty much me, every day. Staring at butt holes and getting my buzz on. "
Think though
OKC is also going to be pushing hard for him… For a congo front court of Ibaka/Biyombo they would probably consider sending out Harden. Not sure if we could match what they have to offer.
Draft Reggie Jackson/Justin Harper/Kenneth Faried
Sign Reggie Williams/Kenyon Martin
Trade for Anthony Randolph
They already have Kendrick Perkins
They have built well. They don’t have to give up an asset to strengthen THEIR front court.
All the more reason that the Blazers need to get BB.
by spencerbutte on Jun 8, 2011 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions
They don't have to
But it would be smart to. Perkins is a risk, already has a lot of miles on his body. a Perkins/Biyombo center rotation would absolutely destroy just about anyone in the western conference.
Not to say I would not welcome Bismack here, because I would. But I think if you say we can move up for him, so can OKC & they can put together a better package.
Draft Reggie Jackson/Justin Harper/Kenneth Faried
Sign Reggie Williams/Kenyon Martin
Trade for Anthony Randolph
That's a ton of assumptions about Bismack
while Harden, who was a top 5 pick and shown plenty of promise, is firmly entrenched as their vital third scorer. They would be crazy to move Harden for an unproven rookie like Biyombo. That could set their franchise back years if Biyombo falls flat.

Either Nene or Marc Gasol
This team needs game changersm, not a team full of “potentially good” guys, but already good players. Unless the goal is to compete in 2022.
sam dalembert
if we can get him for the right price
Hawes
I would like to extend the qualifying offer to Oden & see if he can turn things around and sign Spencer Hawes as a backup. Hes from the NW area and has alot of skills and is still young and has a chance to improve. He can shoot outside and can pass well for a big but needs to improve his post D and rebounding. Ideally we could sign & trade Camby for Nene but thats not likely. Gasol resigns w/ Memphis as does Deandre Jordan w/ LAC (who I’d love to steal away from the Clips but they’d rather trade Kaman to keep him). Or Dalembert or Jeff Foster would be nice in a backup role too. I just hope we dont make the mistake of overpaying for a low ceiling backup big and I’m not really in favor of bringing Priz back either.
