Bucher: Blazers Would Be Good Fit For Hornets PG Chris Paul?
Ric Bucher of ESPN.com (Insider) writes that the Portland Trail Blazers could be a good fit for New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul if and when he becomes a free agent...
--------------------
If Paul has a list of preferred destinations, he hasn't let it be known, so let's assume the field is wide open. Let's also assume he wants to go to a bigger market and play with another superstar, which seems to be the blueprint du jour. I see the Knicks as the most ideal fit with either Amare or Carmelo. (Put down the pipe, Knicks' fans, if you're thinking you can have all three.) His toughness and ability to penetrate and kick would work well with the skill set of either current Knick star and, unlike Dwight, he has the necessary nastiness to keep Melo focused. The MSG crowd also enjoys a show and Paul is certainly an entertainer. I'd worry a bit about marrying two stars -- Amare and CP3 -- who already have knee issues at such a relatively young age and are average defenders, at best. But I'd love to see Deron as a Net and CP3 as a Knick battle for point-guard supremacy in Gotham.
Now, if market size weren't a factor, the Trail Blazers would be an ideal fit for Paul, assuming the Brandon Roy issue can be resolved. Roy and Paul would have a hard time coexisting, but I can't think of a big man who would benefit more from playing with Paul than LaMarcus Aldridge, and Portland has the necessary compensatory size at the other perimeter positions.

Can we trade Felton?
If so. This indicates we are getting Chris Paul.

Chris Paul, a potential Trail Blazer? What a novel idea!
Why haven’t more people been talking about this? This is the first I’ve heard of it here at BlazersEdge.

Excuse me...
…but we just traded Andre Miller and Rudy Fernandez for Raymond Felton, with the supposed hope that he will be our PGOTF for the conceivable future. He hasn’t yet played a single second as a Blazer. Maybe I’m just not in the mood for Chris Paul replacement scenarios yet…infact maybe I’m so sick of hearing about Chris Paul as a Blazer I hope it never happens.
Get back to me, when the lock-out is over and if Raymond doesn’t lose the pudge.

Blazers G Raymond Felton jealous of Chris Paul, sources say
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Newly acquired Trail Blazers point guard Raymond Felton has a bone to pick with superstar Chris Paul, anonymous league sources say.
“CP3!!!! I will destroy his flesh on the court,” Felton apparently told sources.
According to anonymous league sources, Felton frequents Blazer’s Edge, the popular Portland blog filled with ravenous, obsessed basketball fans. The blog is believed to be the leading source of workplace procrastination in the region, and has been responsible for seven known deaths.
Apparently, Felton was angered by Portland fans’ obsession with Paul, despite the recent trade that brought Felton to the Trail Blazers.
“I will take him any day, one-on-one…”
When asked if he meant one-on-one in basketball, Felton assured that he meant a one-on-one knife fight.
More on this story as it develops.

Sources in Paul's camp say he has burned the fat of three young bulls in preparation for the upcoming duel.
Felton is pursuing a less traditional training regimen, calling on experts from many different backgrounds including, sources say, voodoo magic.
“The other day, Ray asked me where he could find a live chicken,” teammate Wesley Matthews recalled, “He wouldn’t tell me what it was for, but he was hanging out with a pretty scary dude that had a snake wrapped around his shoulders.”
When told about his new point guard’s upcoming duel, coach McMillan was enthusiastic, stating that he likes to see his players show “scrap”, and encouraged Felton to “get some shots”. When told of Felton’s unorthodox fight preparation, McMillan was unsure whether it was legal in city limits, but declined to criticize, instead focusing on the bout. “He’s going to have to out there, and play the game the right way.” When told that there were to be no rules or referees, and thus no right or wrong, McMillan gazed out the window and muttered the word “scrap” under his breath.

as long as chris paul doesn't go to the knicks or l*kers, i'll be happy
I hate that knicks fans think that every player wants to join the knicks, plus, i don’t think even chris paul can find a way for carmelo and amare to coexist.
i don’t even have to explain my problems with the l*kers.
I'm not sure it's worse than the lakers
Bynum? Sure, trade him. I mean, we’ll be getting Dwight next year anyway. And point guard problem? Don’t worry, we have a couple easy options coming up.
It looks like sarcasm, but that wasn’t the context I read it in.

but for L.A. that’s just one small piece in the long list of reasons that i despise the L*kers. If you want a few other sample pieces:
Andrew Bynum’s cheap shot elbows
over 30 appearances in the finals
Kobe Bryant is the Darth Vader to David Stern’s Emperor Palpatine
Jack Nicholson is more obnoxious than Mark Cuban

Bottom line
if the Blazers fail to reach the WCF following the lockout, they are not going to be a destination for any blue chip FAs
losing in the first round 3 years in a row = pretender, not contender
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
WCF?
I’d think that if they made the WCF, they wouldn’t be looking for a new core player.

Sure it's different
prior to this past season, Dallas had been to the finals with Dirk 4 years ago, OTOH Portland hasn’t been past the first round since 2000
Dallas is a major metropolitan area where many professional players make their homes. University of Texas players are available year-round for workouts. OTOH, Portland is tucked way up in the NW corner of the country, there’s no incentive for FAs to come here, unless…
Paul overpays for them, which he can’t do while the Blazers are over the cap
Or the team looks like it’s ready to compete for a championship, which, if you ask anyone outside of PDX/BE they’d say is far from the case
So, comparing the Blazers future to the Mav’s recent past is apples and oranges. The only thing the two franchises have in common are rich owners—but Cuban knows how to stay out of way and let his basketball department do it’s jobs—while Allen is hand’s on re:draft day and insists that his “favorite” players like Rudy absolutely not be traded away for years, until finally all of their value/upside is wasted away.
Keep on thinking positively if you want to, but it’s going to be a long offseason and nothing will be settled by Bedgers talking about it from now until the end of the calendar year
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Well we agree on all counts here!

As a player, I would prefer D-Will
As a person, I would prefer CP3. Not saying Deron is a bad actor, but it’s pretty clear that Paul is one of those community guys who really drinks the kool-aid on being involved and giving back and all of that sort of thing. I think he’d be a much better cultural fit.
And since we’re not getting either of them, squishy off-court criteria is as good as anything.

I thought it was more like feb.
I know you can do it sometime mid year, if you don’t you are stuck like we are with Oden.
Not coincidence, IMHO.
Felton – 1 year left
Camby – 1 year left
Batum – 1 year left
And if Greg takes the QO:
Greg Oden – 1 year left.
I don’t think it was orchestrated to be like this from the very beginning, but I do think that at a certain point they realized there was an opportunity to build in an escape hatch into the team’s development plan. I fully expect that if we end up with Greg not panning out and/or further dissapointments, we’ll be well positioned to blow this roster to kingdom come.

It' fun to dream...
But sooner or later we are all going to have to wake up. There are plenty of players around the league that would be a good, if not great fit on our roster. No question (stealing coach Mcmillan’s favorite phrase)! But the problem that plagues our franchise is the location of said franchise.
Why would you want to come to drab and dreary portland oregon when you could finish out your career in sunny LA or Miama? Dont get me wrong, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my city but I’ve also lived here all my life. High profile super stars arent able to get past all the preconceived notions about our town to want to play here.
Its really to bad Portland has this stigma hangin over its head because if it didnt, who knows where or how far our team could go if Chris Paul would want to come here and play.
Why would you trade Paul for expiring contracts?
His contract expires after next season, they’d get cap space if he bolts anyway. Let’s use common sense people.
cuz you could possibly resign the expiring contract players if you want to keep them.
or you could get absolutely nothing out of losing the best pg in the world.. but you know whatever..

Roy and Paul would have a hard time coexisting
Seems like Roy has a hard time with all his PGs. Funny how nobody else does…
Look at all the good SGs
No top Tier SG has a top tier PG next to them. The only thing close is Monte and Ellis and Curry…and now looks like one of them will be traded.
Allen is different
He plays much more like a 3. How many top tier SGs stand in the corner and throw up threes all day?
Besides the alleged friction with Miller, who has he had problems with ?
Seemed to coexist fine with Blake, Jack, Bayless.

by hoodieNation on Jun 30, 2011 2:40 AM PDT up reply actions
The league needs to sell this team back to individual ownership.
There’s two ways to do it:
1. The Hornets are a contender, and represent a “blue chip” sports team acquisition.
2. The Hornets have slashed their payroll and have both minimal operating costs and are well positioned for the next couple of drafts. This makes them a “value” acquisition.
Chris has said repeatedly that he wants to stay with the team long term, but the odds of an owner wanting to buy a zydeco band by the name of “Chris and the Benchwarmers” is highly unlikely. Assuming West goes and contention hopes along with him, the league will pressure CP3 to move on so that the team can become both terrible and marginally profitable from day 1.
I don’t see that having anything at all to do with Portland now or later. I’d sooner predict something like Chris and Dwight anchoring Boston or some other large market team in need of retooling around a new core.
"You can pretty much flip a coin to see which Portland team will show up: the dark-horse world-beaters or the mixed-up eggbeaters" - Dave
If Chris Paul wants to win
he will go to PDX. The NY media is like playing a secondary opponent every night.
I'm more interested in how available this makes Okafor,
although now that they’re losing Gray, the Hornets might try harder to keep him. Still, if they have any interest in blowing things up, I’d love a Camby and Babbitt for Okafor kind of deal.
"Nicolas! You're the strongest boy in the world!"
Did anyone see Chris Paul in the playoffs this year?
He was killing it. You can’t even tell his knees are bad. But yeah his knees are probably bad, so we shouldn’t sign him. Can you imagine having Roy and Paul…..injured…:\ so that means we are trading for Chris Paul.
What would the "Batum is the next Pippen" crowd offer Frenchie?
Should Uncle Pauly open up the wallet to ensure we get to keep him forever and ever in PDX? Wake me up when he accomplishes anything more than CP3, as I know his presence is why the latter isn’t here still. I mean we coulda, woulda shoulda in the draft, but no, we decided Martel was the next Jordan, and then in recent years deals involving Pip, I mean Batum were apparently squashed involving CP3. Look, I really do think he is a pretty good player, but we have so overvalued him as a fanbase and an organization that we failed to cash in our chips at a great value. Now we either will have to resign him or be faced with losing him to another team, or perhaps see his trade value shrink ever more when others see he aint Pip or even Prince.
