Yahoo writer marc Spears views Blazers draft as a failure
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=mc-spears_nba_draft_winners_losers_062411
Although I do agree the draft this year is questionable, I do not see Rudy as an insurance policy. Marc Spears wrote, “While Fernandez wanted out, the Blazers helped the NBA champion Mavericks and lost an insurance policy for injury-prone guard. Doesn’t this guy realize Brandon Roy isn’t starting? Or…. I might be mistaken but the last I heard Rudy Fernandez has been happy of late with his situation in Portland. We also have a player named Wesley Mathews? The proven starter? It seems to be people think Roy is still capable of making a comeback. I do think Rudy will flourish in Dallas, Rudy and JJ Barea will complement each other really well. Anyways…. Just thought I would share the link. What do you people think?

Stupid
To already declare it a failure. It’s just as likely that Felton resumes his play from last year and is an All-Star, that Nolan Smith turns out better than Irving and wins ROY, and Diebler breaks Rudy’s rookie 3 point record. It could also be a total failure I guess, but the odds are about the same.
We didn't really lose an insurance policy with Rudy
We drafted Nolan Smith who is a combo-guard that can play the two plus we have Williams, but we really don’t know what he is capable of in the NBA game. I think they both can have spot minutes along side Roy. Plus, Roy’s production is still in question…
I still wonder
What Rudy will play like on the Mavs or for any other team for that matter. I would like to see him do well. I bet he could be a lot more productive with the mavs second unit; they will be running like crazy. I hate to say it but I think Rudy will flourish. I am excited for Nolan smith. I only saw a few of his highlights but he seems like a decent addition. Just wish we could have aquired a decent PF.

They absolutely failed.
They blew it when they passed on Faried. Plain and simple, that was poor work. Smith would’ve been available later, if they were really high on him. They blew it with DeJuan Blair last year (twice), and blew it with Faried this year. Heck, PA could’ve bought a late 1st round pick and picked up Smith, they just left Faried out there. Can anyone give a good explaination on why they didnt get Faried??? I haven’t found one, yet.
Yep makes no sense to me either.
I’m hoping there is another trade on the horizon that will make this look a little better. It’s hard to justify passing on such a great rebounder especially when its a team need just to take a player whose position is already overloaded.

Um, because he's a one dimensional player?
He’s a poor man’s Reggie Evans.

Actually, he's being called more of a Dennis Rodman type,
or a poor man’s Dennis Rodman if you want to put it that way. Truthfully, though, even a Reggie Evans would fill a need for us.
i heard as part of the Felton deal
we couldnt pick Faried because they wanted him. If we picked Faried no Felton deal.

Trying to grade drafts immediately after the fact is pointless because nobody knows how good players will acutally become
For example, look at this grading of the 2006 NBA (part 1, part 2)
Here are some of the grades:
Bobcats: B+ for drafting The ’Stache
Bulls: A- for ending up with Ty Thomas and Sefolosha
Bucks: B for drafting David Noel
Blazers: B+ for ending up with LaMarcus, Roy, Freeland, and Sergio
Toronto: A- for ending up with Bargnani

Wait...
I thought Rudy didn’t have any value?
only when he's on our team
now that he’s gone…

Marc Spears
likes to take short cuts when it come to thinking. This are people that get paid stupid amounts of money to be “experts”, but if they had to put their money where the mouth is in a sports gambling forum they would loose there shirts.
Maybe
I’m not sure if he’s just too much of a fan to be objective or he just doesn’t think through his opinions sometimes. I am often left shaking my head when I read or listen to him, but if he has his followers who like and/or are empassioned about his views, then great for him, and I wish him well…

To add to this
I heard him the Lund show when the Monta Ellis rumors were heating up. He made it sound like the Blazers couldn’t get him even for LMA… Spear painted a picture of Ellis as an all-NBA level talent, and all-defense as well. He sounded like a paid shill for the Warriors.
