Blowing up the Heat?

In the wake of Miami's loss, I'm wondering (and I'm sure I'm not alone) whether the Heat's experiment with the Big 3 (or Big 2.5) will survive.  It seems that there isn't enough ego-room or elbow-room on the court for these three players.  Dallas wins with team basketball, and the Heat suffer.

Is it time for the Heat to trade one of the Big 3 and go after a few solid players in exchange?  Could their team be better without so much star-power?  I think so.

Bosh for ??

Trading LeBron James

Not sure if Wade is going anywhere, but Wade sure showed more heart than James in the series.

Speculate away, friends, but I'm voting in favor of Bosh or James being offered for trade to strengthen the team.

How does the new CBA figure in?  Could the new CBA block or discourage breaking up the Heat?

Will be interesting to see whether the Heat can stay in the kitchen and keep the Big 3 together after their implosion.

I doubt it....

The Heat won the Eastern Conference. I’m sure that’s little solace to them right now. But the truth is, even “as is” The Heat are one of the true contenders in the league. CBA, lock-out looming, I’m sure their will be some repercussions from falling short of the goal, which for a team made up of Lebron, Wade and Bosh certainly is winning a N.B.A. Championship. But I doubt it will take the form of “Blowing The Heat Up”.

I might expect some role players, some tweaks. I like Spoelstra so as a coach I hope he doesn’t become the sacrificial lamb…but he might. But I don’t expect Miami to touch any of the principals with the big 3. In short? Miami IS Wade, Lebron and Bosh…those 3 have come together to win a championship. First try? FAIL. I think there will be fall-out, but I don’t expect a dismantling of the core.

knee-jerk reaction

You see a lot of this with today’s 24 hour news cycle. We want to over analyze, break down, and react to every event. The Heat made the finals, the team around the big 3 will be made better. It’s this same mentality that lead people to think Nic Batum won’t get any better, or that Dallas couldn’t win a title with Dirk as the centerpiece. Miami is just fine (provided Lebron wakes up next finals he’s in).

Not even a trade of LBJ for Dwight Howard? I’m not convinced that Wade and LeBron fit together.

I see what you’re saying, but I think that LeBron’s baggage might become too heavy for the Heat. It will indeed be interesting to speculate and to see what actually unfolds. :-)

I mean if they can get Dwight Howard that's one thing

but I’m not convinced that they won’t win championships with their current core…in fact, I expect them to despite being beaten by Dallas this season. Let’s not forget this was their first year together and it’s probably the worst supporting cast we’ll see them with.

LeBron and Wade both had near MVP quality seasons.

Can’t work together? Not sure I agree with that at all. LBJ for DH they might have to listen to. Anything else elicits laughter or a hang-up.

Blow up the team? LOL!

The Heat just made the Finals and you’re already talking about blowing it up? By blow it up I assume you mean trading away one of the big three. Not gonna happen. Not in a million years. At least not this offseason. Riley will “wait ’till next year” before doing that. Bosh would be the only player in that group who he would even remotely consider offers for. Prior to that we’ll see what he can trade some of the senior citizens on his team for, plus the MLE.

Actually I was thinking Lebron for Howard

Wade is still the star of this team, so let him stick with the 4th quarter heroics, and Bosh and Howard would be an amazing tandem together. Bosh would finally be used as he should.

Portland could coast along with their superior talent and stay right with us. Now that Portland woke up, the hammer cometh down.

LeBron is the best player in the league and has been for about 4 years now. He is also younger and has a better track record of durability than Wade. A few bad quarters at horrible times this year doesn’t change that. To put Wade ahead of LeBron in the pecking order would be purely a sentimental decision, not basketball related.

Despite the poor performances in 4th quarters in the finals, on the whole deciding for Wade over LeBron would be a disastrous decision from a basketball perspective.

Yeah sorry you're overrating LeBron.

He’s an amazing athlete and a gifted player, but Wade has proven himself to be amazing under pressure while LeBron has continually faltered when put in those similar situations. I personally think that Wade + Bosh + Howard is more of a championship contender than Wade + James + Bosh.

Even if you consider James’ superior productivity to be canceled by his recent late-game issues (I don’t—give me the better player over the course of the season and I’ll figure out how to make it work in 4th quarters) the scale is clearly tipped by LeBron being almost three years younger and having a far less extensive injury history. That makes him a much better bet over the next 5 years.

I just dont see wade and him winning multiple championships together, maybe 1 or 2 in the mext 6 yrs. they both want the ball and lead….I dont think trading him is all that bad…though my money would be on bosh in a Howard deal…Riley is an amazing coach and good GM at what point does he go,. I disagree

Wade has a killer instinct. LeBron does not.

Jordan was talented… but what really set him apart is how hungrily he wanted to kill his opponents. You saw that in 2006 before wade suffered injuries. I’d 100% take wade over lebron because lebron just doesn’t have the fire.

Assumming that the CBA is anywhere near where the current rumors are

eg. 45-50 million hard cap, and “super-amnesty”

I think that Bosh will be traded or “amnestied”. Trading would make more sense, but would require replacing most of his salary, which is why I wouldnt be surprised to see the Heat use amnesty on him.

Really depends a bit on how the next CBA looks like

The harder the cap, the more likely they’ll have to move one of the big 3 at some point. If there is still a mid-level exception and the cap only gets lower and harder over time, there is no need to make drastic moves. They can just add a quality guy plus minimum salary vets and the occasional draft pick every year with the MLE (plus re-sign Chalmers this year who is in the Oden situation yet his QO is dirt cheap).

As for their roster construction, most of the guys are signed through the 2013-14 season (Wade, LeBron, Bosh, Miller, Haslem, Anthony; with JJ expiring one year earlier).

by Norsktroll on Jun 13, 2011 1:44 PM PDT reply actions

Miami lost because:

LBJ showed his immaturity — he’ll get over it!
Miller and Haslam missed most the season — much better teamwork next year
The other 7 didn’t do much — which free agents won’t want to sign with Heat for less $$$?

Conclusion: Pat Riley will continue to add a great supporting cast + the team will continue to improve = likely champions next year.

I think Bosh has taken unwarranted flack this year.

With 3 stars on a team, which he is admittedly the least of, someone has to step back a bit. He still posted solid numbers and won several games for them. He had some huge games too when LBJ or Wade were a bit off. I would trade any Blazer not named LaMarcus for him, and I’m not even sure my reluctance there is anything more than Homerism.

by goobie1 on Jun 14, 2011 6:56 AM PDT up reply actions

no, he deserves it.

take a step back in scoring? okay.

but as the only one of the “big 3” who is a big, he shouldn’t have played a shrinking violet inside. his rebounding was way down, blocks were down and he stopped posting up.

having a power forward who shoots outlet jumpers is okay, but not when he’s one of your three superstars and not when you have no other inside threat.

Yeah, in all fairness to Chris Bosh, he was a more statistically productive #1 option in Toronto than ...

LaMarcus Aldridge has been in Portland. For proof, view Bosh’s age 25 season last year and Aldridge’s age 25 season this year: http://bkref.com/tiny/BHXiW

I also feel pretty safe in assuming that Aldridge would’ve wilted in Miami like a flower without sunlight if he played next to LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Like Bosh, Aldridge would’ve withered away as an ancillary option. I’d argue even more so than Bosh, though, as y’all’ve seen what happens with Aldridge when he steps aside for somebody else — such as Brandon Roy, who doesn’t hold a candle to James or Wade — and fades to the background.

It would be monumentally stupid to blow up the heat

but trading Bosh for better depth might not be a bad idea. I’m sure there’s a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 trade out there worth thinking about.

#52

by Magnum on Jun 14, 2011 5:30 AM PDT reply actions

Yes, perhaps I used the wrong phrase

“Blowing up” is not exactly what I imagine, but what I wanted to discuss was whether the Heat would trade 1 of the “Big 3” for pieces that would make them a stronger team. I’m arguing that having the 3 superstars may not be the optimal team structure for the Heat, and that, in fact, it may become disfunctional with LeBron and Wade sharing command responsibilities. More than one “Alpha” can and will result in drama both on and off the court.

With all of the PR coming out of “The Decision”, it would not surprise me at all if the Heat felt it was better business to cut LeBron if they can do so and actually get better, and in the process restore the dignity and reputation of their team, who are currently viewed as Villains because of, mostly, LeBron. Trading LeBron to another team could benefit both the Heat and LeBron.

Bosh? He went from Superstar to Afterthought. He played pretty well, but he is underutilized on the Heat. I could see him being traded for pieces that make for a stronger “whole.”

Folks here think I’m daft, and maybe I am. Maybe Riley will try to herd the cats into a championship team. As stated in this thread, there is a good chance of success. I just expect the Wade / LeBron issue to eventually explode, much like Kobe / Shaq. Winning isn’t everything for these guys. Alpha Dogs want the limelight and need command, and winning without that, to them, often isn’t worth it.
