John Canzano of The Oregonian writes...
-----------
A source familiar with the situation said Thursday that Portland figures it must deal with Roy's future if it's truly going to rejoin the league's contenders. Retirement for Roy is among the options they're considering.

Note: Roy is not going to retire this year. A medical retirement case is essentially impossible to make at this point given how he performed post-surgery. A buyout -- given the dollars remaining on his contract, the team's overall cap situation and the hole that would be left by his departure -- is very unlikely before the end of next season at the earliest. -- Ben

haha ikr!

And ben you couldnt be any more wrong. HE still can have a medical retire, everyone in the dang league knows he cant play, or he can “hurt his knees” in the offseason. or he can just retire like an everyday person, you dont need medical reasons to retire.

For sure, you can drag back out that old W-A-L-L-A-C-E Blazers jersey you confiscated from your kid a few years ago. The thing takes on a new meaning today.

alright, this is a misleading title...

it says in the article
“A source familiar with the situation said Thursday that Portland figures it must deal with Roy’s future if it’s truly going to rejoin the league’s contenders. Retirement for Roy is among the options they’re considering”

therefore, its AMONG several things they are considering. Again, Paul Allen’s pockets are very deep, and i think he’d rather have Roy as the 6th man and overpay him than to lose Roy altogether while saving a couple million dollars a year in luxury tax by using the Amnesty Clause or having him retire.

As if the blind rage had washed me clean, I opened myself to the gentle indifference of the world... For everything to be consummated, for me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate.

That's what I thought...

…when I read the article. The context of comments by this “source familiar with the situation”, is unknown. Plus yes, there is a BIG difference between The Blazers want Brandon to retire vs. Portland figures it must deal with Roys future.

It could simply be Canzano asking what do you do with Roy? And “somebody” answering, well A, B, or C could happen…..and of course Canzano runs with the most inflamatory hypothetical option….with the most inflamatory headline…

I HIGHLY doubt the Blazers would seriously consider asking Brandon to retire…because they know he doesn’t want to…and a guy that just won a playoff game almost single handedly IS not going to qualify for medical retirement…the Blazers have got to remember how badly that went with Darius Miles….and Darius was far more “Over” than Brandon is…

I think this is just Garbage Spin by Canzano….

The opening line of the fanshot, quoting Canzano

My point is that everybody here at Blazers edge is “familiar with the situation”, i.e. Roy’s knee injuries, and thus just as qualified as Canzano’s ‘source’.

His qualification of his source only means that it could be a guy off the street corner. By using the word ‘source’ he attempts to give credibility to his crummy story.

Isn't retirement up to Roy?

He would be forfeiting his salary if he chose to retire, so I don’t think the team can say “Brandon, we picked you a nice place in Florida.”

Medical retirement is also probably out since he’s been playing. Last time I checked overpriced contractitis wasn’t a career ending injury (not for players at least).

by Devenex on May 26, 2011 10:27 PM PDT reply actions

Looks like he played out his big contract

Then decided to take a year off to be with his family, forgoing the pursuit of a new contract (which would have probably been a mid-level exception offer).

Then got a 3yr deal (only one year guaranteed) to be part of the Devin Harris/Jason Kidd deal but didn’t participate in a single game as he was just a filler contract to make the numbers work.

by Devenex on May 27, 2011 9:57 AM PDT up reply actions

There was a MLB guy recently who felt like he stunk and didn't deserve his contract.

So he retired.
Hadn’t heard of that happening since Mike Schmidt. It’s rare.

by mittsabishy on May 27, 2011 4:50 PM PDT up reply actions

That was Gil Meche, who didn't think he "stunk" at all. In reality, he retired due to injury.

Here’s an excerpt from the article on Meche:

"When I signed my contract, my main goal was to earn it," Meche said this week by phone from Lafayette, La. "Once I started to realize I wasn’t earning my money, I felt bad. I was making a crazy amount of money for not even pitching. Honestly, I didn’t feel like I deserved it. I didn’t want to have those feelings again."

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/27/sports/baseball/27meche.html

Anyhow, I’m still stunned by the curveball of Meche leaving $12 million on the table like that.

Money might not buy happiness, but it sure as heck makes being unhappy easier to live with.

Still, I’m a bit perturbed that you took liberties with the story by stating Meche “felt like he stunk” and crap. What could be seen by some as an uplifting human interest story — although I find it to be hokey bunk that plays to people’s mawkish sentimentality — was distorted by that insipid quip of yours, so job well done.

Good luck with that....

Getting Roy to retire is a pipe dream. There are stuck with him and its just not too advantageous to use amnesty clause to save luxury dollars but not free up cap room. The only way they get him to retire is by doing one of two things which are probably both pretty unethical.

1) They could publicly humiliate Roy by relegating him to the role of a Patty Mills. A bench warming overpaid cheerleader whose face isn’t used in any marketing or advertising and whose skills and talents arent considered when designing the team. You bench him and frustrate him to the point of speaking out and complaining then you recoup some of your losses by fining and suspending him for that.
OR….
2) You start the guy and you ride him for 42 minutes a night and just kill his knees and make sure you blow them to crap then you ask /hope that he retires due to pain or that you can get a medical evaluation to dump him.
Either way, these are kinda D-bag moves. So that means Paul Allen Might consider it right?

If i'm right more than Jason Quick, does that make me a "Blazer Insider"? If so where do I get paid?

Someone on the radio (can't remember who, sorry)

Had a great point- the thing that made Brandon special was his consistency. That Game 4 performance was legendary, but it doesn’t address the inconsistency issue Roy deals with now.
Canzano is Canzano. He will always try to irritate. This is no different. It’s time to cut Roy loose, and the only way to do that is with a Salary-Cap relief Amnesty Clause, so here’s hoping they get it done.

by TheThinWhiteDuke on May 26, 2011 10:42 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, there’s no way Roy gets bought out before making SURE he is a liability to the team. And that won’t happen until we get to see him for another season. You never know, Roy is a professional. Perhaps he spends some time on that 3-ball and gets his shooting percentages into the 40’s reliably. The Blazers could really use another 40+ shooter. Matthews was the only one (I think) who played significant minutes and averaged 40+ % from downtown.

"You know, when you are in the game, you hear 20,000 people behind you, you don't feel anything."

by halo_on on May 26, 2011 10:53 PM PDT reply actions

Finally someone said it. Once we realized that Roy had no knee cartilage left and has an arthritic knee it was over.

If he can’t play at an all-star level next season, he has to retire. I don’t want to see him be used as a spot up shooter because he can’t play defense with a bad knee.

I’m fine with Roy retiring if he can’t get back to all-star level. I don’t hate Roy and I completely understand. I just don’t want to waste one more second on a truly hopeless situation. Oden has hope for a healthy career, Roy does not.

by BRoyInThe4th on May 26, 2011 11:37 PM PDT reply actions

It's all or nothing huh?

BRoy will not be our all-star again, but he can be one heck of a role player for what years he has left. Nothing is forever, Even LMA2 is limited. so when he slows down instead of adjusting, just retire him. That means Camby is gone, Dre is gone, Wallace is gone, since he didn’t return to his all-star status last year after his injury. We can’t get any seasoned vet because they have slowed down from the all star years and need to retire.

It is true we hired him at a premium played player and he is damaged goods now, but he got damaged while producing for the Blazers. Yes I know that is argumentative, but nevertheless it was finalized while playing for the Blazers.

BTW, he does have knee cartilage left, just no meniscus left or a cushion for the cartilage,

Roy can still ball

You just wait and see, next year he’ll surprise all you naysayers. It’s terrible how many of you turned your back on Roy when he needed his fans the most.

He’ll be the starting SG because that’s what he is and it’s not surprising that he isn’t a successful PG. If he was a great PG then he would play the position.

I still think it’s ridiculous that he wasn’t given his starting position back, limited minutes or not. Roy over the course of his career, short or not, has EARNED that position over anyone else on this team, regardless of Matthews play this past season. That probably hurt Roy the most and he is right to feel hurt because most injured STAR’S are given their position back. He had to battle back from injury and learn a new position, backup PG.

by Leif Jensen on May 27, 2011 1:23 AM PDT reply actions   2 recs

We know he can still ball, but 1 game here and there doesn't do much good. He can score 100 in a game for all I care, but that only gets us a spot win.

We need 16 wins in the playoffs to reach the ultimate goal. It doesn’t look like Roy will ever be able to give us that.

by BRoyInThe4th on May 27, 2011 2:00 AM PDT up reply actions

It's possible he is inconsistent...

…due to being used inconsistently!

Brandon has always been a rhythm guy and takes a while to get into the flow of a game. My opinion is similar to Leif’s. Give him a chance to be the starter… He deserves it! Given consistent minutes and a consistent role he could very well be our most consistent player… Again!

For the investment the Blazers have made in him that seems like the obvious choice to me.

#7... GO BLAZERS!!!

by Ilikeemall on May 27, 2011 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Sure, if his health permits it. But, his health no longer permits it.

Likely gone are the days Roy can play starter minutes due to his knee issues. It would be really short-sighted and irresponsible for the team, both financially and player health-wise, to throw Roy as in as starter and give him starter minutes. He might perform for a year or two if lucky, but what happens for the rest of the years of his max contract?

Also, I’m not sure why Roy “deserves” to start. No one deserves to start unless they legitimately earned it as being the best players on the team and also give the team the best chance to win. If Roy beats out his competition, fine. But, I have a hard time seeing that happening since defense is also part of the game of basketball. While he might still be our best offensive wing, his defense has regressed to a point that the team has to actively scheme to hide him on the defensive end.

In addition, I do not understand why we have to play him as a starter just because we made a bad financial investment. The salary is already a sunk cost and should have no impact on decisions going into the future. If the new CBA is drawn up so that Roy’s contract is costing us extra $$$ in terms of luxury tax, or opportunity cost due to amnesty having cap-clearing clause, there’s no question that we should use the amnesty on Roy. The dumbest thing the team can do now is to use the argument “well, we are already paying him this much money anyway” to justify player roles going forward.

The cake was a lie.

by xedubx on May 27, 2011 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Being a "starter" doesn't come with a guaranty of minutes...

…and your speculation regarding his health is just that… speculation. It should go without saying that he has to be ABLE to play for this to work.

Of course it hinges on his health allowing him to play but that is the case whether he starts or comes off the bench. I think the, “his health no longer permits it” conclusion is a little premature but only time will tell.

Your quote:

No one deserves to start unless they legitimately earned it as being the best players on the team and also give the team the best chance to win.

…That statement fits #7 pretty much to a “T”…

My statement assumes that when the next season starts (whenever that may be) BRoy will be at least as healthy as he was to end this last season and hopes that he will be even stronger.

We don’t have to play him as a starter because of money but we certainly should if he gives us the best chance of winning which in many scenarios… He does!

The dumbest thing the team could do right now is to cut off their nose to spite their face without knowing what the REAL future holds for Brandon Roy.

#7... GO BLAZERS!!!

by Ilikeemall on May 28, 2011 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the reason many here believe the worst for Roy is because of all the medical evidence that was released

describing his injuries and not to mentioned the type of physical condition he’s in. No meniscus in a professional sport is a difficult hurdle, historical evidence has shown that it may be easier to be pessimistic because it will be close to impossible for him to sustain his all-star status.

The eye test also shows that he just moves slower and is less explosive, which even for his style of play which never relied on being explosive or blindingly quick is evident.

All I’m saying is that until Roy proves us wrong on a consistent basis it’s hard to think he can be a productive player. I’m just trying to be realistic with the information that I currently know, the future may change that. Will the lockout or amnesty clause prevent that from ever being seen? I don’t know. Tough position to be in.

Also, there have been a few who were saying his play was as bad as Rudy’s. Rudy has played poorly but only earns ~$2M, Roy earns ~$14M, 7 times that. That is not cost efficient, hell according to some Rudy is not worth $2M…

Being a Blazer fan is not exactly healthy.

by dpnim on May 27, 2011 4:52 AM PDT up reply actions

I am a BRoy fan, and I haven't turned my back on him

I agree he can still ball, but it would not be in BRoy’s best interest to put him back to force him to do what he used to do. He is not healed from his injury, the Dr. just bought him some time. his injury will progressively get worst and eventually it will win, but in the mean time, he has been given some time and it would not be wise to use it up all at once or in a few month. As he said himself his knees are what they are. so he has to learn to play differently or not play at all.

I asked my knee specialised about PRP, and his evaluation is that it is just a experimental procedure that has no scientific evidence of working. And even with that I still find myself hoping that it is a miracle procedure that will buy him new life, but in reality I too have to say his knees are what they are.

After they already had lost high draft pick Len Bias before he could play a game. But that of course was under a different CBA, though under the same commissioner.
