I was just looking at the standings and playoff implications, and as of now, we'd be playing our old friends the LA Lakers in the first round. San Antonio will get the #1 seed, and the Lakers the #2, but Dallas, thanks to their recent collapse, is only one game ahead of OKC for the #3 seed, and OKC could potentially surpass them.
At the bottom, we have the same record as New Orleans (45-33), but NO owns the tie-breaker, so technically right now they are the #6 seed and we are the #7 seed. Memphis is at #8, and one game back. There's some interesting matchups coming up there, as Memphis and NO play each other, and Memphis plays us as well in our last home game.
Taking all of that into consideration, I wanted to see what the thinking was amongst BEdge nation on possibly tanking (now that we have clinched) a game at the end of the season to get a more favorable matchup. IF we end up not being able to catch NO for the 6th seed and a matchup with Dallas (or OKC), I honestly think we'd be better off falling to #8 and getting the Spurs as opposed to playing the Lakers. I won't rehash here - I'm not scared of the Lakers, a Blazers pessimist, or anything like that, but in the interest of max experience and playoff run I don't think the Lakers in round 1 is a good idea. As much as I despise them, they are a championship team with a ton of experience.
If we are sitting in the #7 seed, it might make sense to drop the Memphis game and the Golden State game next week, let Memphis move ahead of us (I actually think they could be the best bet to upset the Lakers), and take the 8 seed and a matchup with San Antonio.
My feeling on tanking - HATE IT. I believe a team should play every game to win and not let up, as it can lead to chemistry issues, inconsistency, etc. HOWEVER, it happens all the time in the NBA (they call it "resting your starters"), and I think if we can ultimately decide if we see LA or SA in the playoffs, we'd be better served playing SA.
