Hey Dave,

Are you and Casey going to do any more chats/podcasts?

Casey

has gone all TV big time which is a place I can’t follow, being in Idaho and all. So not for the foreseeable future.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I wonder the same thing

It’s a bit disturbing to hear that Greg wants to have a new start because of all the “naysayers” and negative talk. Fans need to get more positive and let him know they still support him

by longtimeblazerfan on Apr 2, 2011 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Nope

As I said in the Dallas game preview, winning is the only value here, just like it will be the only value in the playoffs. You don’t prepare for a scenario by practicing the exact opposite of what that scenario requires.

I think he's still finding his way

and we haven’t seen his potential either way. Until we do, it’s hard to answer this question. He needs to find a spot and fill it. The current best chance looks like point guard.

Dave, who do you think is the best playoff matchup for the Blazers? I'm thinking Mavs.

Bringin' Rip City back.

by blazer in DC on Apr 2, 2011 9:12 PM PDT reply actions

I'd love to beat the Thunder

but all of them will be tough in a 7-game series. Keep in mind how much prep time a playoff series allows. Veteran teams get tougher in that scenario.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Hey Dave,

Which of our non-rotation players do you think has the best shot of becoming an impact player in future seasons?

"Hey! If the moon were made of ribs, wouldja eat it? I know I would!"

by cubs0505 on Apr 2, 2011 9:13 PM PDT reply actions

You mean out of the Top 8?

And serious impact? Armon Johnson. Patty Mills is already having an immediate impact, but I don’t think that’s what you were aiming at.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 9:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree!

I like armon’s game, good defense which is the best raw skill to work with, not afraid to shoot the ball, I think if he can calm down, get comfortable and learn to run the team like dre, he will be very valuable in the future… but it will take alot of work on his part cause dre can really run the team and get them where they need to be well! great court vision and bball IQ! armon can get there

by blazefanin97123 on Apr 3, 2011 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions

i'd like to hear you clarify your response on this...

“Not in the long run, no”….does that mean you think the team CAN’T handle different starting line-ups over the long-run and that it WILL mess with them too much? Or “not in the long run, no”, meaning over time, no, it won’t mess with their minds muhc?

~T

by barnabas75 on Apr 2, 2011 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions

It will mess with their minds and rhythm

At some point you have to have a starting lineup you trust and bench guys who know their roles. If you can’t get that you have to move guys until you can.

2nd Round Match-up

Hey Dave,
If the Blazers do end up with the 6 seed, and we manage to beat the Mavs, who would you rather see us play: The Lakers or the Spurs? Please explain your reasoning.

by baller_34752 on Apr 2, 2011 9:15 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

I will be so out of my tree if that happens

that I won’t care. But Spurs because we at least make them look slow.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 9:17 PM PDT up reply actions

why not the Lakers?

I think SA would be a nice 1st round match-up, because they’re on a downswing. But if they get to the 2nd round they may have some of their momentum back…

by baller_34752 on Apr 2, 2011 9:19 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Lakers:

Kobe, Artest, Odom…rough and tough and hard to handle. Fisher, Blake…don’t make mistakes. They’re not going to lose to us.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 9:21 PM PDT up reply actions

SA will do better?

They are coached so well by Coach Pop, they won’t turn the ball over much either…

Brandon Roy and Armon Johnson

for point guard. I haven’t checked who the available FA PF’s are so I’m in the dark on that one at this point. A tough rebounder with some offensive potential would be great. I’m not as married to the need for defense here with Wallace, Camby, and maybe Oden available.

sometimes it is annoying to be at a game and not have as much information about what is going on as I would have watching TV

player injuries, for example, are confounding to the fans at the RG - what really happened, is the player seriously hurt, is he coming back etc.

is there anything BEdge can do to inform fans at the RG what is really going on – - – many of us have smart phones and can monitor reports on BEdge and Twitter and so forth

have you any thougths about this?

Dave,

Who is better suited for the 6th man role, Matthews or Batum?

Stealth > Wealth

by 500dogs on Apr 2, 2011 9:28 PM PDT reply actions

I'm not sure either is

in their own minds. I frankly wouldn’t mind seeing both form super-sub bench. I wish Wesley did a couple more things well. Then I’d have no qualms about him as a starter. I like Batum starting better but then again he’s got a better guy at his position as well. That’s what makes the question convoluted. In isolation Wesley would be the more likely bench candidate but in this lineup having Batum come off the bench would make more sense right now.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I see.

So you’re not sold on Batum as a SG?

Yes

I don’t know about his handles but he will learn how to contribute all over the floor every game. I have high expectations of Wesley.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Matthews ankle is more of an issue than the organization will admit.

He just seems to be dragging it out there. When was the last time he put up an explosive 20+ point game. They just seem to be less frequent in 2011 and I attribute it to him playing through some serious pain.

by austinpwnz on Apr 2, 2011 9:28 PM PDT reply actions

Pre-season I would have said Miami

but not because I thought they were overwhelming like some did, rather I didn’t think the competition was that good or that ready and I figured the league would want to see Lakers-Heat. In the name of consistency I’ll stick with that.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

What’s your favorite starting line up, effectiveness wise, that you’ve seen so far?

LET'S PLAY SOME DAMN DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!

by Batum Shakalaka on Apr 2, 2011 9:28 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

We haven't seen enough of any

to make a good judgment. I want to see Oden back, myself. I think both Batum and Wallace are good in the starting lineup and I don’t mind Batum-Wallace-Aldridge even.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I know what you mean about Gerald Wallace becoming one's favorite player,

partially also because of his deep voice. And beyond that, because he always seems to be trying so hard. I’m trying to remain loyal to Lamarcus however, because for so long he was a definite 2nd in anyone’s thoughts to Roy. Plus there was the “soft” business, which he has overcome. How much of the love for Wallace is based on the very natural love for someone new?

ignacio

by ignacio on Apr 2, 2011 9:29 PM PDT reply actions

Wallace is harder to love

because of his game. He makes what he does well look too easy and makes what he doesn’t do well look too hard. That’s a bad combination for fan affection.

I don't think LMA 2.0 is here yet.

We’re at about LMA 1.7. He had a good run against some poor teams and that’s to his credit, but the real credit comes over a course of seasons, not months. He’s grown for sure…everybody can see that. But he hasn’t developed to the point of having permanently revolutionized his game, nor of forgetting the past entirely. He’s still becoming a different player. He hasn’t arrived yet.

Nate has gotten a lot

I said once long ago that the problem with actually getting some production out of a guy with variable potential is that everybody assumes there’s still way more to be had. It's not "let"

1. Ben is super-talented and has made great inroads (and contributions to) the Portland media scene. He’s there because he deserves to be there and people see that.

2. I might also be able to make those inroads and contributions but I live in Idaho, not Portland. I also have a family, a non-media full-time job, and I’m not relocating for anything less than a high five-figure media deal (which ain’t coming). Somebody should get the shot off of the Blazersedge platform though, and I’m glad it’s Ben.

Developement

Hey Dave,

What effect does veteran presence have on the development of young players? You always hear stuff about how Armon Johnson or somebody “can learn things by watching Andre Miller”, but does that kind of learning actually happen frequently at the NBA level?

by jumphook on Apr 2, 2011 9:56 PM PDT reply actions

Depends on the vet and the rookie

It can, but it doesn’t always. We do know that it can’t without vets though. I think some of the roadblocks that Roy and Aldridge, for instance, are still hitting in their 5th years are because they didn’t have that vet to both teach them and to earn/take a place from. It’s good to learn about your position but it’s also good to have to fight for your position from Day 1. That makes you less inclined to let anyone else take it, especially some guy in an enemy uniform on your court. Your position on the team translates to your position on the floor, your control over the ball, etc. Having to fight through veterans makes you tough. It also helps you understand what they’re doing right, why they’re still in this league, why the coaches trust them…valuable stuff that you have to figure out in order to beat them out.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions

As far as actual little tricks

I think LMA has really watched Camby. He does that tip-out rebound now, and I’ve even seen the windmill swat on occasion.
Roy, not so much, but he’s never had a true vet with a similar skill-set.

Not a chance

What if none of the best 16 teams reside anywhere on the Eastern seaboard? Disaster from league perspective. Even worse, what if most of them were in the West? 9:00-10:00 p.m. start times for most every playoff game wouldn’t make people in the East very apt to watch.

Stealth > Wealth

by 500dogs on Apr 2, 2011 10:01 PM PDT reply actions

I would think that would be a good pickup

if he could be gotten cheaply. Keep in mind that defense is starting to become less of a priority in places the Blazers don’t already have it. Nash would be an interesting wrinkle for this squad. But Phoenix’s price would probably be too high, especially to trade him in the West.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 10:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Nothing from the Blazers

If they’re going to dump him for cap space it’ll be as far East as they can manage.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 10:13 PM PDT up reply actions

For now

I think they’re just starting to come to terms with a Nash-less future, which means also coming to terms with the death of the old playing style. I think Brooks is a transitional player who will provide points while they suck but ultimately not be the centerpiece of true regrowth.

What needs to change

For opponents to be afraid of the Blazers?

Interviews with other coaches and players usually garner a lot of nice, respectful comments about the team. You know, along the lines of “they’ve got a lot of length!” … or “up and coming talent” (still) … or “well coached- dangerous team!” … and lately “Yeah, Aldridge should have been an all star.”

But nobody’s afraid of them. Does this only happen after playoff success? Or a big time, season-blistering winning streak?

I feel like we’re kind of on the cusp of that transition from the team that is always worried about adjusting to what the more feared team is doing, to the team that comes in confident, knowing that other teams will have to reckon with their unstoppable game plan. So, how do we get there?

by HowlinJoeWolf on Apr 2, 2011 10:04 PM PDT reply actions

The Blazers need to kick butt

and grind people into the dust until their coach is subbing in their 10th-12th men with half the fourth quarter remaining. The Blazers need to get Oden-Wallace-Matthews-Batum scary on defense, dominate the boards every night, and keep a consistently efficient offense. There’s room for improvement all around. Portland is still in the stage of we CAN win games. They need to grow into, we WILL win games.

You know what would be amazing?

Filling the entire Rose Garden for a BE Night game. Or if not BE exactly, some sort of coordinated charity tickets for kids assault from any similar group that does something like this throughout the year. With some help from the organization and Uncle Paul.

Not that, you know, that would be technically possible (unless season ticket holders gave up seats).

Ah, well. Dare to dream.

Hey Dave, great job with everything you do with the Blazers and Blazersedge Both you and Ben!

I think this is the most visited website I go to each day!

Anyways, I was just wondering on what your opinion was of KP during his time here, during the rocky situation with PA at the end, and since his firing?

Loved him when he was here

but if ownership felt he wasn’t adequate, that’s their call. Several smoking guns—Oden/Durant, lack of moves for expiring contracts among them—could be laid at his feet. On the other hand maybe those weren’t his fault. The only people who know for sure are the people who fired him.

Batum

I believe that Batum could be a very nice SG. especially defensively with Wallace, LMA and Oden WHEN he comes back. Defensively could be a very tough lineup. Batum is already guarding the other teams best guards. His mid range game is starting to click as he strengthens. You still bring Rudy and Roy for guard play with Wes helping at either sf or sg and Camby up front. For a lot of teams his size brings a mismatch. I do still see a need for a PG and a power front line player to help against the Ibaka’s in the league.

ok, hypothetical scenario

Say we get a backup 4/5 and have a solid big men rotation, don’t need Nic or GW at the 4 anymore.

Should anyone other than GW, Nic and We$ see time at either wing spot?

by austinpwnz on Apr 2, 2011 11:03 PM PDT reply actions

You need Rudy's shooting

and dynamic play (when he’s on) as long as you have him on the roster. Also you can’t just bury Roy.

by Dave on Apr 2, 2011 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I know, I know...

I just see examples of how when the roles get straightened out, and everyone gets consistent playing time, of how everybody just gets better (such as Houston post deadline, Lowry especially).

I guess in this case, Rudy probably doesn’t have enough trade value to get a Pachulia/Nazr Mohammad/Nenad Krstic rotation big that I feel we need. The roster is just so heavy to wings right now.

Roy isn't playing enough

to hurt anything seriously. And he’s actually had some nice moments as a reserve point. It’s easy to miss that opponents still respect him in a way they don’t Patty Mills, for instance. He draws defenses even now.

I suspect Roy is going through a serious adjustment period…that all of what you’re noticing cannot be attributed to the physical alone.

No

Or at least not more so than they are against any team. Bias is situational and particular. On the whole Portland will get a fair call against anybody. If Kevin Durant or Kobe Bryant are driving in traffic in a critical situation they’re going to get calls Nicolas Batum wouldn’t. But then most of the league wouldn’t either. OKC gets more calls than most anybody and the league certainly doesn’t consider that cow town critical to its success.

Might be too late...but why has Dre never honed in a 3pt shot?

I mean this is as bad as shaq never getting ft to reliable percentage.

Not like Dre would have to change his game…just be able to hit 1-2/game at least 35% clip…kinda like gwallace isnt a gunner from deep but when open he will launch.

Some folks have it

Some don’t. Some guys spend 15 years in the league and can’t dribble. Being an NBA player isn’t as much about doing everything well as about doing a couple things unstoppably.

So, you know, by the standard of most guards he can’t shoot, but he’s well above the level of somebody like Rondo, who really can’t shoot.
