Roy turning into Pierce?

If anyone has ever watched Paul Pierce play, we all know that he's not the fastest player in the world. Certainly not any faster than Roy (post knee surgeries). Both are good shooters. Pierce may be the defender though. And Both are deceptively athletic.

My question is: What's stopping Roy from becoming the next Pierce? They both are very similar now in my opinion and I'm hoping Roy realizes that his best chance of becoming a really effective player for us, is to imitate his game on Pierces.

Paul Pierce is far more athletic then Brandon Roy is now.

Sadly.

Appear similar, but

Roy’s knees hurt while he plays. Short spurts, where Roy sucks it up (easier said), he can be effective. But, he does not dribble well under pressure anymore. He has a lot of work to do to become a consistant player. We will need consistentcy come playoff time.

by ORDucktape on Apr 2, 2011 10:12 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah, Pierce doesn't have bad knees.

And he definitely has a quickness advantage over Roy at this point.

by Gay4Roy on Apr 2, 2011 11:46 AM PDT reply actions

Roy and Pierce were similar BEFORE Roy got hurt...

Paul Pierce is who I have always compared B.Roy’s game to, and I still hope he can have a career as good as Pierce’s. Brandon is definitely not the same baller he was, and I have heard many many many many many people saying that B.Roy is flat out done. Give me a break. Haterz need to bail out get hooked on meth or something… no worries here. I hope Roy returns to form sooner than later, he was so exciting to watch and the REASON we had those 50+win seasons. He is a gamer and winner down the stretch. Portland needs Roy to be a true Winner!

I think there was some similarity there before

Pierce is a great player who played a huge role in multiple trips to the finals and is one of the highest scoring Celtics ever. So you’d be happy to be in his company regardless. I have always enjoyed Pierce because he doesn’t look particularly fast or athletic yet still dominates. I used to think Roy fell somewhere between Kobe and Pierce.

I think Roy has proven he can still score as a midrange and 3-point shooter who can create space at will like Pierce. He’s done that maybe every 3rd game since returning. Only time will tell if he can do it more consistently.

If anything, I think the hope is that Roy becomes the next Andre Miller.

Miller doesn’t make his living on quickness, explosion or elevation. These are the tools Roy once had, but are now gone.

He does make his living on craftiness, BBIQ, upperbody control, changes in speed and misdirection. Those are all tools that Roy still has.

The question, is can Roy develop court vision, and accept the role of facilitator instead of scorer? I think that’s what Nate’s trying to learn by persisting in playing Roy at the backup pg.

Brandon isn't as quick or as good a defender as Miller

Just a better shooter. So he should stick to shooting.

by zeusmith on Apr 2, 2011 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Or nearly as good a passer

he’s a decent passer but not PG good.

by zeusmith on Apr 2, 2011 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

he's a good drive and kick passer, and good at avoiding turnovers

but few of his passes make their way to easy buckets or anyone posting up or big men on the roll (remember how Aldridge used to only ever pop?).

You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.

I agree

If Roy wants to be effective his best bet is to become a slightly-altered Andre Miller… better shooter, an adequate passer and high basketball IQ. What Brandon lacks in quickness (compared to Miller) he makes up for with height.

Roy and Pierce are light years apart

After going through a 6 game run in which he averaged 13.2 pts., shooting 49% from the floor and 44% from 3 pt. line(8-18) in 24 minutes per game, it looked like maybe he really could help the team. Then came the last 9 games and its like he just hit a wall. His average in the last nine games has fallen to an embarrassing 5.2 shooting 34% from the floor and his 3pt shot has totally disappeared (0-7), not even attempting a 3pt shot in his last 4 games in 19 minutes per game. Since his main contribution is scoring, and that seems to have gone away for the time being, I think its time to give Mills Roys minutes he can have the minutes that Mills is getting now. Maybe that would give his knees some time to recover for one last run in the playoffs, as for making his game like Pierce that ship has sailed, sorry.

I'm hoping for a different Pierce...

I remember Ricky Pierce being a pretty sweet off-the-bench scorer for the Bucks and Sonics back in they day – I’d take that out of Roy gladly at this point.

BRoy

Brandon is still fresh off of surgery, it takes time to recover from if even if it seems minor. Both kneeswere operated on, I had the same thing done to my left knee and it still isn’t the same. Give him time and I promise you we will see what he will be. I love Brandon but team first if he cant help us find him a new roll but we need to be patient like we are with GO.

I think pretty everyone said it.

but one thing not mentioned is Pierce’s size. It allows him to shoot over most defenders. An unathletic Roy cannot shoot over too many NBA players.

by JasonT on Apr 2, 2011 5:06 PM PDT reply actions

They are exactly the same

Except Pierce is bigger, stronger, faster, and more athletic.

I don't see it

Roy has always created his own shot. Pierce plays much more team oriented ball.

I hate Paul Pierce

He is the 2nd most annoying player in the NBA

by TP.5 on Apr 3, 2011 7:37 AM PDT reply actions

Wishful thinking

If Roy was as good as Pierce he’d be starting and fully earning the contract that he signed

It’s not Brandon’s fault that he can’t, them’s just the breaks of the game

The best bet is Steve Smith

Put Roy in the post and draw the double, and spot him up from 3. If they do that the guy will have a nice long effective career.

I agree

Despite their differences I’ve always thought that was a fair comparison. I hope that Brandon will become effective again within his limitations.

by cantdunk on Apr 3, 2011 9:48 PM PDT reply actions

Pierce is not as quick and athletic as he used to be

He IS alot tougher than Broy. Pierce likes to initiate contact and then finish – Roy is kind of starting to do that more and more.

by LicketyBrindleDowntheMiddle on Apr 4, 2011 8:53 AM PDT reply actions

He likes faking people out more than initiating contact

That step back jumper of his is still nasty

Roy can do that.

I think Roy is figuring this out. It will take some time, but he can be a Paul Pierce type.
