Shouldn't Lamarcus start at 5 for team USA next olympics?

Not to distract from the playoff push and amazingness that is the blazers right now but I have realized that Lamarcus finally seems to be getting more respect from other players around the league. Part of it is that until this season not only did other nba players seem to just underrate or not respect aldridge's game, they almost acted as if he was a non factor and pretend his stat line was irrelevant and made him look better then he was (basically the same way i view kevin love- cool stats but id prefer alot of PF's before him with alot worse stat lines if im a gm). He never seemed to be able to shake the image that all he does is shoot jump shots. Sure, he developed into a terrific outside shooter very early into his nba carear but the predominant view of him being soft and unable to score in the paint was to simple and ignored the complexity of lamarcus as a player.

The view completely glossed over what Nate put Lamarcus in position to do, and asked him to do. We all know Nate likes to keep the floor spread on offense, and for most of Aldirdge's carear keep the paint open for roy. On defense nate likes to protect the paint and dominate the defensive glass. Aldridges rookie year nate certainly didn't encourage him to focus on scoring in the paint, but to develop a more well rounded game and continue to improve on knocking down that midrange jumper. Why? He was playing next to Randolph or Joel. no need to clog the paint when zach was in, and joel cant spread the floor so lamarcus wouldn't have any room to effectively operate in the paint (let alone for a rookie trying to adjust to the nba) anyways if nate had wanted him to. In both cases, Aldridge was more useful spreading the floor and hitting his jumper and ceding the paint to zach and roy. and don't forget that when joel went down in february lamarcus finished his rookie year starting at center.

And then greg oden got drafted. what do you think nate told lamarcus to focus on during the offseason? post moves? um no. this is the same dude who tried starting blake over dre. nate is obsessed with spreading the floor. you can bet rookie lamarcus was told to come back the next year ready to give oden space and live by the pick on pop with roy. sadly, oden got hurt. but id say the improvement lamarcus made coming into his 2nd year was remarkable. the best front court that year was la and joel, so once again it made more sense to not clog up the paint for roy. however, when outlaw played 4 and la 5, he showed a ton of promise in the paint  with limited opportunities. yet with aldridge at 5 and joel on the bench, the already dangerous pick and pop between roy and aldridge became lethal with outlaw in the corner and joel on the bench.

Next offseason, same thing. with oden coming back, why should lamarcus focus on improving his low post game? he was much more valuable to the team improving his face up game. not only did nate ask for more of the same from la, the number one offensive goal nate gave la during offseason was to EXTEND his range to the corner 3. sure they wanted him to continue to develop a lowpost game, but at much less of a priority and extent than they wanted him to improve his face up game. no way was la going to get a chance to play alot in the low post his 3rd year.

In his 4th, oden went down 22 games into the season and then followed by joel. up until this point the entire national media (notably chuck) had already been criticizing the blazers for not having a low post scorer. instead of understanding nate never wanted la's focus to be in the post and allow oden to develop into the low block scorer they chose to overlook lamarcus's emerging post game, albeit through limited opportunities. but now with oden and joel injured finally the team demanded la step up and play in the block. he began to adapt his game in the middle of the season and progressed very well. he started demanding double teams on a regular basis but was unable to improve enough during the season to effectively exploit the double team. in a sense, he had developed a good enough low post game to be effective in the paint, yet teams were still able to shut him down if they committed to stoping him. this forced him to teeter back and forth between his outside game and inside game depending on how good of a game he was having. the more teams tried to stop him in the paint the more willing he was to just shoot jumpers.

Every low post scorer encounters the same learning curve when the transition to the nba. scoring in the paint in the nba is tough. and once you learn how, then teams double you. and then it becomes really tough. most great low post scorers dont have la's sweet jumper however. this forces them to keep hitting their head over and over again against the double team wall until they either learn to overcome it, or their coach realizes it is futile, will never happen, and at that point try to get that player to develop a better midrange jumper. lamarcus was stuck in a grey area where in the short term (during a game) he better helped his team by going back to his midrange jumper when teams began doubling him, and the long run where he needed to eventually get more comfortable exploiting the double team.

The same point can be made about every offseason of his with oden always suposed to be inserted into the offense . yet this offseason, with an already elite midrange jumper for his position, he focused on a low post game.

The results speak for themselves. which is why media personalities and players alike are all starting to give him long overdue props. its just too many of them simply think something all of the sudden clicked in LA's head and that is why hes good now. instead, the truth is that something finally clicked in their heads.

All of this brings me to my point. Not only should Lamarcus start, or at the very least, back up Dwight Howard on team USA next olympics, he finally is getting the appropriate respect from his peers to allow this to be possible.

In the 2008 olympics, Howard started at 5 and Bosh backed him up. Bosh however played more minutes and normally finished games. Howard was simply to much of an unnecessary risk shooting free throws at the end of games. It is more then that though. Undoubtably a key reason Lebron and Wade were duped into wedding themselves to Bosh for 6 years was his performance during the olympics. they loved playing with an athletic big guy who wouldn't clog the paint and was able to knock down jumpers off kick-outs for easy assists. Bosh proved to be great for the international game, Howard more awkward. Yet from team USA's perspective, while Bosh may have been slightly more useful then Howard it was still more of a wash between which one to use since their strengths and weaknesses were so different. With Bosh they give up too much defense and low-post scoring, and with Howard they have difficulty creating driving lanes for James, Wade and co. Yet Paul and D-Will found pick and rolls with Howard far more effective then with Bosh, not to mention being able to throw countless more alley-ops to Howard then Bosh. The two complemented each other great, but im sure coach k would of loved to morph them into one player.

His assistant, Nate, did just that for him.

Good point

Aldridge provides the best of both worlds (between Bosh and Howard) for the international game.

However, I still think Howard would start.

you need to be on the team

before you can start for the team

my thoughts as well

let’s at least see if LMA make it to a team USA workout, first

(I have no problem if Aldridge takes the summer off, there’s no need to add excess wear and tear to his body during the summer…and his family comes first)

Aldridge is good but he is no Dwight Howard

With that said, Aldridge deserves a spot on Team USA more than Bosh does.

Very true, but dwight is no lamarcus aldridge either

Two different kinds of players. Dwight is obviously a better player right now, but LA is closing the gap. I will say Aldridge has more of a international game

Dwight is a much better off ball, paint patrolling clean up defender

But struggles when you drag him out of the basket area. He has a tough time guarding stretch bigs, guys like odom, Aldridge and gasol have exposed him in the past. He also can’t switch onto guards like LA can

TL:DR

Walls of text = not good, but no, when it comes to the Olympics guys like D12 will actually be committed, so Aldridge won’t start.

by gtbassett on Mar 9, 2011 7:20 PM PST reply actions

aldridge hasn’t committed because it has been obvious his game wasn’t respected. if he dominated in camps it could still have been easily written off as a fluke, or unrepresentative of his consistency as a whole. on the flip side, if he underperformed it would only exponentially re-enforce negative misconceptions of him as a player. not to mention, in the past he hasn’t possessed the necessary skill set to anchor team usa in the paint. only this year has he became capable of both scoring on double teams and passing out of them effectively.

this summer, if you put deron williams, kobe, durant, lebron, melo, wade, paul, rose, gordon, westbrook in a gym with howard, bosh, and aldridge, which big do you think most would want to run with? again, howard is hard to pass up, but im guessing that unless LA continually gets dominated defensively in the paint and on the boards the rest of our nations superstars would more then prefer to work with aldridge on offense.

agree/disagree

i agree with the notion that he could play five and do really well for the olympic team. no doubt. he would be a terrific complement to james, wade and paul.

but personally, i really hope he never plays for the olympic team. every player only has so much mileage in them, i hope he gets it all with the blazers. i don’t think he would have progressed as much as he did last summer if he had been figuring out how to play beside lebron and wade and carmelo, rather than focusing on himself.

at the end of the day, a blazers championship would make me approximately seven thousand times happier than an olympic gold medal.

go blazers.

I’m sure it’s an honor to play for your country, but

’Dre, Cuban and the Spurs have it right…the summertime is for rest, not more pounding

LMA can keep right on doing what he did last summer, as far as I’m concerned

The post was a nice summary of LA’s development as a post threat though.

agree

i totally agree with everyone’s input and greatly appreciate the feedback, this being my first fanpost. i am capable and willing to argue that id prefer lamarcus to howard as an nba gm but accept that this is a minority opinion and recognize dwight’s superior defense. however, i put much more confidence in lamarcus’s developing low post game as opposed to dwight’s future mid-range game.
sure, howard has deserved the starting spot but lamarcus game is much more tailored to international play. maybe lamarcus is best off anchoring a small and poor shooting but effective driving/fast breaking 2nd team featuring rose/gordon/wade/melo and closing games with the starters.
the best point made by you guys however was no need to have lamarcus play ball in the summer… rest and stay healthy. as a selfish of a blazer fan i am and considering our past i totally agree. but the dude is balla and doesn’t get enough respect from the nation being quarantined in portland. once the county sees him run up and down the international court with lebron and co im not to worried about him being snubbed from another all-star game. la deserves the fruits that come with being an elite player. he already is elite, and earning a rotation spot for the usa national team is best way for him to prove it to casual nba fans.

(this being my first fanpost i should of mentioned im a daily lurker and give much props/thanks to dave and ben. it is impossible to expect half of what they have given me/blazer fans over the past years)

Great first post

Although, I’d like to add a comment on LMA early inside play. Teams often double teamed him, which made Lma very tentative and he usually passed back out which was the better decision. This greatly discouraged Lma from playing inside. Blazer coaches really worked with Lma to get comfortable with the banging and Lma responded by developing several moves to allow him to counter no matter what the D threw at him. Now Lma rarley passes back out of the post; and that is still usually the right decision.

Lma has come a long way and I am proud he is a Blazer. If he never plays on an Olympic squad so be it, but I’m sure he will not be overlooked anymore.

love the post and the ideas

i do agree with the ‘summer rest and improvement camp’ though. Also, while LMA undoubtedly brings far more offensive firepower to the table than Dwight Howard….do they really need it? The team has been built around ‘Melo, LeBron, Kobe, Wade, KD….these guys are some of the best scorers EVER. To be honest, I think D12 could go the whole Olympics without scoring a point and we could still win easily. LMA would be a great but unnecessary addition to the team, from Krzyzewski’s point of view. AKA he would be the best backup 4/5 any team has ever had haha

"Some things you just can't question. Like you can't question why two plus two is four. So don't question it, don't try to look it up. I don't know who made it, all I know is it was put in my head that two plus two is four. So certain things happen. Why does it rain? Why am I so sexy? I don't know."

this is an awesome first fanpost

keep writin’ em

lamarcus was stuck in a grey area where in the short term (during a game) he better helped his team by going back to his midrange jumper when teams began doubling him, and the long run where he needed to eventually get more comfortable exploiting the double team.

For me, this is the money quote. I’m not totally onboard with justifying LMA’s lack of improvement inside, but I definitely agree that this is why.

Also, he would be a very good international 5. Long, quick, versatile. As with many others though, I think he could use the rest (especially after a 40 mpg season).

You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.

PLEASE no!

He already plays way too many minutes in Portland. I think it’d just be asking for injury to have him play all summer. He already had ambiguous knee pain after playing 99 minutes in back to back overtime games. The last thing he needs is more wear and tear.
