Potential Playoff Matchups

If the Blazers get into the playoffs this year, they will be playing one of 4 teams in the first round:

Spurs

Lakers

Mavericks

Thunder

This is jumping way ahead, but assuming Portland's current active players are healthy going into the first round, who does Portland match up best with?

Each team presents their problems. Spurs with their 3 point shooting and tough rebounding. Lakers have size that Portland can longer match up with if Bynum is healthy. And the Kobe factor. Mavericks have the Dirk factor and Jason Terry seems to kill us every time we play them. The Thunder have a point guard who absolutely dominates our back court. And Durant is a crunch time killer. Plus, Ibaka has been able to guard Aldridge fairly well. Who knows how Perkins is going to impact their team?

I know everyone has been saying OKC, and it's hard to disagree

but looking at those lineups? Man does SAS look like a great matchup for us:

Aldridge v. Duncan
Nic/Wesley defending Parker/Ginobili
and our bench is miles longer than theirs.

I

I agree. I think the Thunder could be problematic...mainly because of Westbrook

The Spurs on the other hand, are countered at practically every position by our roster of players. And Wallace gives us someone who will actually work as hard as Blair going after rebounds.

based on matchups alone

I think you’re right, it’s San Antonio. They REALLY don’t want to see us in the first round. That would be the most even 1 v 8 matchup ever.

Why I picked SA...

Plus, don’t we own the recent history? Spurs are clearly prime for a Portland Playoff beatdown… We probably won’t slide to 7 or 8 to get them, but we might catch them in round 2…

SA is never going to make it out of the West. They will get by round 1 because 6/7/8 are garbage this year (unless we fall there ;-), but they won’t get past the 4/5… which I expect to be Portland beating OKC in 6.

If we get to round 2 and we see San Antonio there

look the bleep out, because we’ll have a real good shot at going to the WCF

Without Question OKC

Its not even close really. The main strength of our team defensively are the wings. We can throw the long Batum and the stronger Wallace and Durant, who has incredible pressure to score. We can also throw Wes, Batum and Miller at Westbrook, so that won’t be easy for him. OKC is too reliant on Westbrook and Durant for their offense, and I think that ultimately does them in. Perkins, Sefolosha and Ibaka are not good scoring threats at this point. Our bench also pretty much destroys their second unit, where the only scary guy in Harden. And he could be a problem, but he’s also streaky.

In essence, strong defensive wing play matches up against Durant, and to a lesser extent Westbrook. This OKC team IMO is one or two veterans away, and more playoff experience away from contending. They are still incredibly young. We can beat these guys.

Although we’ve played SA tough over the past few games, they present more of a problem. They have more outside shooters who can drain threes, so they spread the offense much better than OKC. Dujuan Blair is a handful inside and our post defenders have trouble against power interior players. Ginobelli is a threat anywhere on the floor, and their bench is pretty deep.

We matchup the worst against the Lakers

To big in the post. I hope we don’t have to face them.

by zeusmith on Mar 9, 2011 1:24 PM PST up reply actions

I still think we can catch OKC and overtake them for the 4th seed

And play them with the home court advantage in the playoffs. That would be the best case scenario.

by zeusmith on Mar 9, 2011 1:27 PM PST up reply actions

I agree that lakers are theworst option

And our weakness against them is inside. I can honestly say that this year I just want the highest seed possible and take whichever team it is that we get. We are a a matchup headache for anyteam outside of the Lakers this year. If/when Oden recovers then there is no team in the league that we can’t matchup against.

by NWfan on Mar 9, 2011 1:49 PM PST up reply actions

I want OKC in the first round, no question

Now, if we can overtake them in the standings and have us be the 4 and them be the 5, I’ll be more than happy with that.

Porter, Drexler, Kersey, Williams, Duckworth. The greatest starting 5 ever.

great observation

since the themes are identical i thought i’d let readers of this thread see what was written on it just recently

Today more people are liking the Thunder and disliking the Lakers

I guess that little Laker win streak after the All Star break has something to do with it.

Sorry I haven’t been spending much time on the FanPosts lately and didn’t see the similar post from Monday. I’d take it down, but it seems like there are quite few people voting on the topic again today, so I’ll just leave it up and let the mods decide if they want to take it down or not.

I'm thinking we'll face OKC in the first round

and either the Lakers or the Mavs (or Grizzlies) in the second round.

If we get reallly lucky the Lakers move up to 2nd seed and the Mavs drop to 3rd. There is the chance the Mavs could get upset by a team like the Grizzlies too.

WCF would be either Lakers or Spurs if we ever get that far. Finals would be Bulls or Celtics.

Lakers and Bulls are our two worst match-ups throughout all of it.

Note: There is a chance that things fall perfectly if we get on a roll and we end up facing OKC, Grizzlies and Spurs for the WC and Celtics for the Finals. It’s actually not as far fetched as you would think.

what in the world...

how exactly do you have the bracket seeded??

if we play OKC in the first round, we’re going to see the spurs in the second round, no question…unless you have the spurs losing the top spot.

by cdfw on Mar 9, 2011 3:13 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah my bad

Needed coffee and matched the top half of the bracket up inside out. No delete or edit as usual.

by poorwebguy on Mar 9, 2011 4:07 PM PST up reply actions

In reality the chances are very slim to pass OKC up, although it is still possible

Play San Antonio is really the best match-up for us, i dont see how OKC is. OKC has more depth in the post. A Point Guard that we can’t gaurd, oh and a style that would be harder for the blazers to contain. OKC seems to have more run-outs and fast break points, and puts more pressure for on ball defense while San Antonio plays team defense, and a more half court style of play, like the Blazers.

by tyeforshee on Mar 9, 2011 3:30 PM PST reply actions

The dream scenario...

We catch OKC for 4th, and beat them in the first round (if we have home court, in 5, if not, in 6). Spurs limp by the 8 seed, and we take them down (in 6). Meanwhile the Fakers have to play Denver, and the altitude tires them out, and Dallas takes them out in the next series. We then win our third straight 6-game series, beating the Mavs, and going undefeated at the RG…

In the East, the Heatles can’t get by the Knicks, followed by the Bulls (may even lose the Knicks), and the Celtics come out of the East….

Then, my Blazers and playing my Celtics, and I’m good… (I’ll even go Blazers in 6, for the record, tho…)

by Visionary2 on Mar 9, 2011 5:19 PM PST reply actions

Coaching can be a deciding playoff factor

and even though McMillan has never led us out of the first round (yet), I think he has an advantage of experience over Scott Brooks (a good coach in his own right). So I have to go with the matchup with OKC both as player positions and coaching.

"I don’t think it’s lost. I don’t think it’s lost. It’s adversity and something that we have to deal with. We wish it wasn’t like this, but it is."

Ideal seeding

1. Spurs
2. L*kers
3. Mavs
4. Blazers
5. OKC
6. Hornets
7. Nuggets
8. Grizzlies

Also keep in mind that we play OKC and the Spurs twice more this season, so that will be a good measuring stick for how we will fare against them in the playoffs.

Porter, Drexler, Kersey, Williams, Duckworth. The greatest starting 5 ever.
