I have heard multiple people talk about how Brandon Roy should play point guard, and the team does from time to time play him at the position. I have even thought before that it would be a good idea to have him at point guard. After thinking about it, however, I think it hurts the team if Brandon Roy is our point guard.
This teams biggest asset is its athleticism and ability to run the floor. Miller, Wes, Batum, Crash, Rudy, Patty, Lamarcus are all great at the fast break game. This leaves Brandon Roy and Marcus Camby who don't want to run. When we have Andre at point guard with B-Roy also on the court everybody can run the court except Roy and thats fine. There's nothing saying every fastbreak has to have all 5 guys involved in it, Roy can just jog up behind the break and if they slow it up he can play his half court game where he excels. But to put the ball in the hands of Brandon to jog it up every time completely wastes the open court ability of the rest of the team, because not only is he slow bringing the ball up court, he also doesn't have the passing ability to make the long pass to a teammate who gets open up court.
I think we need to give all the backup point guard minutes to Patty, or even let Rudy be the backup point guard, but to let Roy run point guard at any time during the game neutralizes one of the biggest advantages that the Blazers have over their opponents.
