Dwight Jaynes' Great Leap...

DJ recently posted on his blog about a study authored by someone named Griffin that, according to Jaynes, PROVES that Tim Donaghy (ruined former NBA ref. who bet on NBA games) was wrong about his allegations that the NBA and it's refs are crooked and basically fix games so that the teams they want to win do, in fact, win.

The following is the response to Jaynes' post.  I'd appreciate hearing what your reaction to this is.

I haven't read Griffin's study, but I HAVE read everything that was in the links you posted as well as the links Griffin included in his blog posts.  I don't see anything there that refutes Donaghy's claims that other NBA refs have biases against certain NBA teams, that those biases have in fact altered the outcomes of games, or that the NBA has in fact directed that the refs. officiate certain games in a way that alters the outcome of those games.

The central issue here isn't whether Donaghy is a pathological gambler, a liar, or a crook.  Obviously, he's all of these things.  The issue for the NBA and we fans is whether the NBA is on the up and up, or whether it's really more like pro wrestling or roller derby.

Clearly, Donaghy is a liar and a crook.  However, assuming, therefore, that he's entirely wrong about what he's accused the NBA of could be a big mistake.  Don't give the NBA a pass because of Griffin's study!  Where there is smoke, there is fire.  Bank on it!
