Not only alcoholism, but also mental disorder.
For those of us who suffer from these things, like depression, or maladaptive perfectionism in Bayno’s case, it’s wonderful to see an article deal with mental health like it really is.
What a superbly written article on a very serious issue. I’ve had beefs with what passes as journalism these days. But Matt Calkins puts an excellent piece together here. This is journalism. If only all of what gets put out would be this thoughtful.

Bill Bayno can break down an hour of game film and discover 30 areas for improvement. He can expose the most gifted players’ faults and morph the rawest players into stars.
This is one of the main reasons why the Blazers should be drafting big men instead of more wing players. The wing man assistant coach (ref: Travis Outlaw) left the organization last June (Monty)
Players like Batum and Babbitt are not getting the same level of coaching as compared to the past 3-4 years on the wing. OTOH, Bayno and Buck have done wonders with LMA
The solution? Draft and develop young big men (Seraphin, etc) they’re harder to replace and will typically bring more assets back in a trade

I still think Seraphin has a future.
I have nothing to base that on because I’ve literally never seen him play, but I just got a feeling about that kid. I had targeted Larry Sanders, but was willing to settle for Seraphin in that draft, and I was sad to see us pass him up for the shooter out of Reno. My other target was Craig Brackins, who has played 3 games this season. Time will tell with these guys.

Reportedly, the Blazers liked Sanders and Brackins prior to the draft
Bayno is working with Batum in the low post, but now that Joel and Dante are gone the strength of the Blazer’s developmental staff doesn’t really have much in the way of big men projects left to work with…Jarron Collins? Chris Johnson? This is not the raw material that dreams are made of

They're probably licking their chops for a healthy Oden.
Drafting an appetizer would be a smart move.
I read a lot of folks speculating about a return of Pendergraph, and I’ve gotta take the unpopular route… I don’t think he was all that good, and I bet Cho could dig a better option out of the draft/Europe.
Jeff went into the Summer League hoping to walk away with the MVP, but ended up looking about the same as he did the first time around. The new move he tried to demonstrate (a face-up jumper) failed completely—I don’t think he sunk one. Otherwise, he was still the thug he always was: bumping everybody that passed him by, picking up unnecessary fouls and slamming it home whenever he could.
I really like Jeff’s attitude, but then I also like Patty’s attitude. Unfortunately, both players fall short of the industry standard at their positions. Jeff’s injury problems (hip in year one, knee in year two) further encourage looking elsewhere. With the lockout looming, Paris is the new Ellis Island, so the draft or a trade is most likely.

This^
I was reading about how he Blazers kept an option to retain CJ’s rights following this season and I thought “they must not think that Freeland or Pendergraph are going to be on the roster, next year”

Freeland would have to be crazy to go from being one of the hottest, best-paid players in Europe...
to being a rookie coming off the bench in one of the most remote NBA cities during what could be a lockout year. Besides all that, if things go as planned and Oden gets healthy, Freeland has zero chance of cracking the starting lineup.
Personally, I’d be happy if the only moves they made this off season were to get Dante back and draft some Bigs.
Dante has proven to be a player that doesn’t make mistakes and can man positions 3-5. I don’t think it hurts to have a utility man like him around. I don’t know how much interest/competition there will be in scooping him up, but if the price is right, the Blazers should bring Trouble back.
I haven’t dipped into the draft class yet, so I’m not sure which positions are going to be strongest, but I don’t want another project PG. I just hope we pick the biggest guys with the longest arms. PF/Cs, please. We’ve got plenty of 1-3 guys.
I don’t think this team needs another big FA signing this summer. Sure, there are some players out there that are very tempting (Nene, Howard, Crawford, Battier, Turiaf), but if the Blazers went into 2011-12 with the roster as is (+ rookies and Dante), I wouldn’t mind. I think Armon will grow into the 2nd PG we need, Crash will nestle into his role, LMA will find The Groove, Roy will lock his 6th man of the year award, and the Blazers will once again scrap their way to the playoffs.

I like Dante but he's a 'tweener
and he would be redundant in a 2011-2012 rotation with Howard and Batum
the team needs a real banger backup for the 4-5. Depending on the rules of the new CBA, I’d rather target Turiaf than Cunningham. (I’d also like to see a return of Przy)
Unless you think that Armon is a future starting PG (I think he’ll be a decent reserve 1) then Portland has to keep on trying to find a PGotF. Batum is off the table, but if Cho could package Rudy, Babbitt, Patty and the rights to Euros like Claver and Freeland and come up with a young starting PG then the Blazer’s future would be more rosey. It seems like a pipe dream, but Rich did manage to acquire Wallace for Dante, Joel and Marks, so I guess anything’s possible…

The PGotF is coming in 2012.
Miller, Wallace, and Camby’s contracts all expire, combining for over 31 million. They’ve gotta sign Batum and Armon, which won’t break the bank. With that kinda cheese, they could target an All Star. I trust Cho to make the most of it.

I'm down with that goal
Miller can hold the fort until then

Great story
Really nice job by Calkins — told an important story while not trying too hard to impress us with his writing or over-dramatizing Bayno’s issues. I am surprised Bayno decided to open up about this.
Bayno was on Courtside, tonight
Bill said that ‘Dre stood up before practice today and told his teammates that it’s time to focus on the final 16 games (to “leave it all out on the floor”) and finish the regular season strong

Great Read
I have long admired coach Bayno, even from his Kansas days. And I do understand the disability he faces and applaud both his courage in addressing the problem and his courage in making it public. This is real, folks. Many others suffer when they could get help. If you know someone who is not enjoying the process of life perhaps you can show them this article and suggest help. It doesn’t have to be so.
Good article!
I have a sister-in-law with ocd/depression issues and it is not fun to watch people slide and be able to very little about it.
