Rick Bonnell of NewsObserver.com reports that former Portland Trail Blazers center Joel Przybilla will not be bought out by the Charlotte Bobcats...
--------------------
Przybilla thought he was just being thrown into the deal for Gerald Wallace because of his expiring contract. Silas convinced him he'll play plenty as the backup to Kwame Brown; that's he's wanted and needed.

"When I first saw him, walking down the hall, I said, 'How are you doing?' He said, 'Ah, I'm doing...' '' Silas described. "I said you're going to be all right and then we sat down and had a long talk.

"I said how good he could make our ball club, how good it could be for him. If he wants to play another year or whatever, I really think he will be able to, because people are going to see a lot different, as they've seen in some other players who have played here.''
--------------------

Przybilla's fellow former Blazers big man Sean Marks might reportedly be bought out by the Bobcats. Both were moved to Charlotte along with forward Dante Cunningham in the trade that brought Gerald Wallace to Portland.

Update: Bonnell reports on Saturday night that Marks, in fact, will not be waived immediately!
--------------------
The Charlotte Bobcats might not waive Sean Marks immediately, after all. Since they're already paying him, they might keep him around until they know how much Joel Przybilla's knee can take.

Sad day in Blazer town

Hope he comes home next season and can retire with his team.

NOOOOOOOOO! We need Joel! We need a BIG. Not just a big, but a BIG!

I won’t believe it until I hear Przybilla say it himself.

It's good to hear that you guys like him so much

Due his pretty dismal stat line, I think Charlotte aren’t that thrilled about him. What are we not seeing in this guy?

He could still retire...

and then come out of retirement to play for the Blazers, maybe next year.

by davebball on Feb 26, 2011 12:06 PM PST reply actions

But, he could play out the remainde of the year with the Bobcats

He would get stronger and better than we can offer him a contract for next year. No use retiring him until the end of the year.

Why not quotes from Joel?

I could see him being persuaded during a 3v1 meeting that included Jordan and Silas, but I wonder how he felt afterward? I’m waiting to hear something from Joel.

ESPN/AP has some Joel quotes. He seems positively surprised.
“They traded away an All-Star, and I’m an expiring contract,” Przybilla said. “I didn’t know what to expect.”

Przybilla, who passed his physical despite concerns about his surgically repaired right knee, met with Jordan and coach Paul Silas.

“They were honest with me and told me they wanted me here,” the 31-year-old Przybilla said. “That means a lot, especially coming from Michael Jordan. He looked me in the eye and told me this. I’ve never, to be honest, had a general manager tell me that.”
“I probably won’t be 100 percent for another couple of years maybe,” Przybilla said. “But every time I’m out there I’m going to give it everything I’ve got. If he wants me to play 40 minutes, 2 minutes, I just want to win.”

by Norsktroll on Feb 26, 2011 5:33 PM PST up reply actions

Either way

I hope that (a) Cho courts Joel in the off-season and (b) Joel doesn’t hold a grudge and considers returning to Portland. I think he’s been around the NBA enough to know that it’s a business and sometimes this requires trades that may not be the ideal for all parties involved.

no bridges were burned

Joel said he had a hunch he’d be back in Portland, I’m sure that he and his agent’s conversations with Cho and the rest of the front office staff had something to do with that

By the sound of that Quick article, I think he’s definetly leaving the door open. He knows how much the fans love him. I can’t wait to watch the game against Charlotte in a couple weeks. He’ll get a standing O

by Eric Loftin on Feb 27, 2011 2:07 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, when he refers to himself as an expiring contract, he knows what's up.

He knows why he was traded; and it wasn’t because we didn’t like him. Joel is super humble, and has expressed on more than one occasion that he’s surprised he’s even been in the league this long.

I won’t be surprised at all if there’s multiple offers for him to consider once he hits FA.

According to espn

Jeffries is headed to NY:
Houston bought out the remainder of Jeffries’ contract, making him a free agent, New York Daily News writer Frank Isola reports.

Spin: New York is expected to be Jeffries’ landing spot, though Isola reports that Miami, New Orleans and Oklahoma City are all interested, as well.

Marks isn't worth waiting 30 days for

I don’t think there’s any way that Bobcat fans can appreciate Przybilla like Blazer fans do. Joel chose to resign with Portland after the team won 21 games, and he was the heart and soul of the team and the backbone of their interior defense until he hurt his knee 13-14 months ago

then he busted his hump to rehab the knee, came hack ahead of schedule and has been playing on one leg, trying to get his timing back, etc

he’s not going to “wow” you in a week. JP’s the kind of guy you have to see for awhile to really appreciate. Watch how he sets picks

10 day contract

But he’s here for 10 days and he plans to make the most of every minute, especially knowing Boston created three available roster spots with Thursday’s trio of deadline moves.

Shaq is supposed to be coming back and they have a couple other options in the other O’Neal and Krstic. So they could let him go once they have all their pieces in place and healthy.

I really wouldn't mind picking him up if he doesn't go somewhere on a full contract

He’s skinny as a twig but he’s mobile, plays hard, can score, rebound and block shots. He’s probably toast against any decent big but he could be effective spelling LMA/Camby for enough minutes to get them rest.

ya, I was secretly hoping we were going to get him with Wallace

Since we were giving up Joel. Then I found out about the Nazr deal and was like…“So much for that.” Seriously, when you guys watch Joel, understand that he’s no where near 100%. He’s been such a rock for the Blazers for so long helping the team transition from the Jailblazers to what they are now and he’s been an OUTSTANDING citizen in Portland, he’s one of the most under-appreciated guys in the league. Every Portland fan will tell you the same. He’d give his shirt off his back for his teammates, he doesn’t back down from the trash talkers like Garnett, Shaq, and Stoudemire, and he’s pretty much a mean SOB that you hate to play against, but love having on your team. There isn’t a fan in Oregon that didn’t like Przybilla for the way he called it like he saw it, his blue collar work ethic, and the fact that no matter what, he had his team’s back. We all love him and wish nothing but the best for he and his family. I truly hope he’ll get to come home to the Rose Garden in the future and retire a Blazer.

If you can, try to watch the upcoming game in Portland when Charlotte visits. You’ll see the standing ovation that Joel deserves.

Well, technically the team has a slight amount more power.

They can cut the player, essentially “buying him out” for the remainder of the guarantees on his contract, which they would still have to pay.

But typically when there’s a buyout it’s for somewhat less than the total so there is some advantage to the team and because the player can offset that difference by signing somewhere else.

He doesn’t have a real high ceiling, but he’s another blue collar work horse. He doesn’t quit at all, and he’s got a really high BBIQ which allows him to play bigger than he is. It’s only his second year this year, but he plays like a vet. The only knock on him is his size. If he were a little bigger, he’d be a great PF. I’m stuck in Beer Hell, FL. Natty Light is the gold standard around here, Bud Light if you’re “drinkin for flavor” and maybe even a Yuengling Light if you’re especially sophisticated or adventurous.

Good Catch...

….and it explains everything. Joel has always been a consumate professional. Doesn’t suprise me too much that if Charlotte management can convince him he’s wanted, and needed that he would embrace that…

I would of loved to see Joel back in 30 days, BUT if it is not to be? Then I still wish him the best of everything….

Bummer.

Przy is one of my favorite Blazers because he came to work.

Hopefully the Blazers can find some decent big dudes in the D-League.

Thinking of playoff time. Pilla would have been great to have.

Now we but more pressure on Camby and LMA, then we see how physical G. Wallace can be.

Juwan Howard?

if Miami picks up another big like Troy Murphy they’ll have to drop a big Jamaal Magloire and Juwan Howard seem the most likely. If Juwan becomes available he would be a good pick up.

by Biph on Feb 26, 2011 3:30 PM PST reply actions

That would be awesome

I wasn’t crazy about Magloire, but I’d love to have Howard back.

My guess is that they'd waive Dexter Pittman.

Gadzuric?

He’s most notable for changing the pronunciation of his name.

I'm fine with Gadzuric

I mean, he’s not the worst filler around. Between 03-04’ and 05-06’, he was actually not a bad player. He had a PER between 17-18.1 in 236 games, and could rebound and blocks shots fairly well. When those rates declined, he got relegated to the back of the bench and only sporadically got of it in subsequent years.

He’s a guy who actually might hold his own in very short bursts. Would be a decent guy to use when we’re up and want a decent 4 or 5 minutes every so often to rest LMA and Camby.

he should be

I think NJ bought him out or are going to shortly. Of who’s available, there’s Troy Murphy, Leon Powe, Gadzuric, Jared Jeffries. I believe those are the most notable bigs hitting waivers right now. If I had my pick, it’d be Powe and Jeffries, but it looks like they’re spoken for. Murphy scares me because he’s been hurt, but it looks like he’s probably going to Boston. Gadzuric is the next best option. I’d be fine with him. He knows how to play in a limited role, he’s tall, and he’s good for 6 fouls. That’s all we need. UCLA product too I believe, so at least he has that going for him.

by Eric Loftin on Feb 26, 2011 10:31 PM PST up reply actions

I'd be OK with Gadzuric as well

he’s a year older than Joel, and he’s been in a dozen playoff games.

Nothing special, but serviceable

and he may be a west coast kind of guy (UCLA, last played in Oakland)

Ya, hopefully Cho get's it done.

I don’t think we’ll be able to outbid Boston, Orlando, NY, or Miami for Murphy or Powe, so I’m cool with Gadzukes.

by Eric Loftin on Feb 26, 2011 11:50 PM PST up reply actions

Dan Gadzuric is an actual center, too, unlike Jared Jeffries or Leon Powe.

Plus, Gadzuric’s stat lines in some seasons reminds me a lot of Chris Dudley.

Knew he would be wanted

You could tell who the bobcats wanted to keep on their website. They added pictures of the players after a few hours of the trade and the rest didn’t have their pictures on the roster page. Przy and Cunningham pictures were thrown up right away in the blazer jerseys.
