Thoughts on the Trade
This is an email I just sent to my cousin. We have 1/3 of a season in section 319. My analysis of the trade.
Hey man,
I've just spent a half hour watching videos of Gerald Wallace. The "Crash" nickname is for real. He is off the hook and hardcore almost all the time. And recently, he's been as complete a player statistically as someone like Shawn Marion was back in the day, when he was scoring, rebounding, blocking shots and stealing the ball every game. But Wallace does it all without the helping hand of someone like Steve Nash.
This year, he's had a bad year. It started well. He played every game in November, averaged 17, 8.5, 3 assists, and more than a block and steal a game. Then he missed five straight games in December, and the Bobcats lost 4 of the 5. He then missed four games to start January and had a BAD month, averaging 12 points and less than 7 rebounds a game and shooting 42% from the field and 20% from the three-point stripe. February he's come back very strong. He's played every game and averaged 17, 10 and 3 and shooting 47%. I think he may be feeling better.
And if he's feeling good enough to keep it up, he's a fantastic piece of the Blazer puzzle. Just consider last season. He was healthier than ever before (played 76 games), averaged 18 and 10, plus a couple assists, a block and a steal. Only guy to average a double double PLUS a full block and a full steal in 09-10. I think his stats and impact last season should have vaulted him to the status of one of the best players in the NBA. Should have gotten All-NBA consideration. Yet Crash only got five all-NBA votes, and finished behind Bosh, Lee, Boozer, Randolph, Horford, Josh Smith and Paul Pierce at the forward position. That's great news for the Blazers; he's obviously used to being ignored by the national media, so he'll fit right in in Portland and not expect a huge spotlight. Hell, he's played in Sacto, Charlotte and now in Portland. Dude's small-market all night long.
Blazers are smaller now, and maybe less tough. I loved and respected Przybilla's grit and how well he used his limited tools. Dante is going to be a good player. He's good now just by his hustle and muscle. As far as the picks... I kind of say "whatever" about them. Essentially, one of the picks is Bayless. He still makes the trade a positive one if you said Wallace for Przy, DC, BRex, Marks and a protected pick. And jeez, it's the Blazers... they just got a better asset than they would have gotten if they'd kept, and used, that pick this summer. The Blazers have a grip of picks sitting in Europe that may/may not ever see light of day in the NBA. I think maybe it's time to cash in those chips and see if they can play. Time to bring Freeman over. Time to Kopponen up or cop out. And Claver? Bring him over before the unrest erupts in Spain, too.
Anyway, check out this link. This is from last year. It's a kick-A compilation. I suspect you will see a place for him in the Trail Blazer lineup that you may not have realized existed. I think Wallace is a gem, not necessarily a one-of-a-kind but a rare commodity. He immediately makes the Blazers better.
But the lineup of Miller, Matthews, Batum, Wallace, and LMA could be very very deadly in short spurts on both ends. My goodness, it's exciting just to think about it. I don't want to go all Golden State in this hizzie, but LET 'EM RUN!

Trade for Gerald Wallace!!

Under-rated or not, I don't think that this is a good trade
in the short term. This trade will look better in the summer but for now its a bad one. We gave up Pryzbilla and Dante, two very important role players on a team with so many injuries, for a SF/PF in Gerald Wallace. Both Pyrz and Dante helped lessen the loss of Oden and then Camby, both of them not just one player thats two of them! Cho only brought back one player and he is only 6"7 220, who has suffered numerous concussions over the years. Apparently thats why Gerald does not like to play PF so if he does not want to play the 4 then why did we get him? Hopefully not to play the SF as thats for Batum plus we also have Matthews, Roy and Babbit to play the SF role. Point is we have plently to play in the wings but no real help to LMA at the 5 or 4 spot.
The failure to bring in a player with size is what I have a huge problem with, fact is Cho is a slow worker and we gave up one draft pick too many for “crash”.
Games played.
Wallace averaged 68 games played his first 8 years, and has played in 48 so far this year. In the last 4, he’s played in 72, 62, 71 and 76. In that in this span, he’s played in 85% of his games. At the same time, you’re ignoring the fact that he was the best player available not named Williams or Anthony, and the best rebounder – including those “big bodies” who switched teams. As far as the “extra pick”, come on now. Those picks are both in the 20’s, and Allen buys them almost every year from other teams. They look better on paper than they do in the draft. For many years now, and other than Batum, not one of the Blazer picks taken lower than Aldridge and Roy, both drafted in the top 10, turned out to be a starter. Here, you get an established starter. Down the list, you get second team players and fillers.
Frankly, this deal was a steal for Portland. Pryz was expiring and not going to be 100% this year (and can be resigned if we want him back), Cunningham is not remotely the player Wallace is, which is who Wallace replaces, and the picks are fluff and candy that Allen buys for kicks. Sure, we need another big body, but we may also not be done yet, given players like Powe and Marks have both been released.
And where do you get this “he doesn’t like to play PF” routine?

disagree with most of your post, except ...
The part about Babbitt. He better get in the weight room and turn himself into a stretch 4 or the guy is never gonna see meaningful minutes.
Somehow, I don’t think worries about Babbitt even entered Cho’s thoughts during the trade talks.

3 words will live again!!... flaming bag pass
The Faith don't panic, the Faith freaks out, burns out small farms and villages in the name of the Faith.
The "doesn't like to play PF" thing is from something he said in charlotte
What people fail to realize is playing PF next to the likes of LMA, Oden, or Camby is a far cry from Nazir Mohammed, Kwame Brown, or Desagana Diop. Also having wing players such as Wes, Nic, Roy, and even Andre is also a far cry from Stephen Jackson, D.J. Augustine, or any other crappy player Charlotte might plug in.
Now these are two completely different things but in high school i played PG mostly but on certain teams i was on i would be asked to go to either the 2 or 3 spots at times for long strectches, some teams i didnt mind it other teams i hated it because i had to much pressure on me and i was out of my natural position, i think this may have been what Wallace was feeling but its a guess.
