UPDATED March 3, 2011: Transactions and Buyouts (C's sign Murphy, Al Thornton Available)
See comments at the bottom for updated movement around the NBA.
From what I remember, the deadline to pick up free agents qualified to be on a playoff roster has ended. That is to say, anyone we pick up now will be a temp for the regular season only. So if we make the playoffs we will be able to suit, AT MOST, twelve (semi-)healthy bodies:
PG Andre Miller
PG Patty Mills
GF Brandon Roy (GIMP)
G Rudy Fernandez
GF Wesley Matthews
F Nicolas Batum
F Gerald Wallace
FC LaMarcus Aldridge
FC Marcus Camby (GIMP)
C Jarron Collins
PG Armon Johnson
F Luke Babbitt
PLEASE note in the comments below if my memory is at fault. Otherwise, this thread has probably served its purpose.

So our Wallace trade comes down to a Joel Physical?

Good work
I would love to get Joel back if they actually buy him out. Other than that, Murphy would be nice, though it looks like a contender (Bos, Orl, Mia) will pick him up. Ford also. I would like to have.
I voted for Murphy
We need a big in the worst way. Right now, not in 30 days. I’m thinking Murphy will have plenty of teams to choose from though.
Bibby
Where did you hear Bibby was a candidate to be bought out? I would think there would be a significant amount of interest in a veteran point, including the Blazers.
I read in a trade deadline diary
from HoopsWorld, although a recent Google search says that despite
asking for it, a buyout for Bibby is
unlikely

Nice Post
Thanks for the information. If the Blazers are really looking at TJ Ford, I doubt they’ll shift gears and sign someone else, even if Ford doesn’t become available. From what I have heard, Troy Murphy only wants to sign with a contender if he’s bought out.
Possibly immediately available free agents after 2010-2011 season buyout:
Add Leon Powe and Jared Jeffries to that potential list

Charlotte is reportedly going to release Sean Marks along with Peterson, Brown (Derrick, not Kwame), Collins and McGuire.

although from a later tweet, they’re still hanging on to marks and peterson for the time being, I guess pending some other waived/bought out or FA guys agreeing to sign with them
Do the blazers have to wait 30 days to re-sign Marks (not that he’s anything special… ) like they do with Joel?

Jeffries is an average defensive center
Even though he plays that spot rarely. He’s a better pickup than anybody else.

Bring back the Vanilla!
And if not pick up Murp and Ford…both applicable to this team. Don’t really see Charlotte parting with Joel however.
Now seems like as good a time as any
to bring over Claver and Freeland.
Yeah, Claver broke his foot though
We could easily sign TJ and call up Freeland

And leon Powe is expected to head back to celtics now that he was bought out.
GREAT every center/ forward is TAKEN now.

My vote
If we are going through all the trouble and expense of getting Crash, we need 3 more bigs and 1 more point guard. So I am all for “all of the above”:
1. Release Armon
2. Throw money at Powe, Murphy, Jeffries until they come over
3. Sign Ford.
4. Buy headgear for both Ford and Crash (both suffered significant neurological injuries if I remember)
Honor Alaa Abdelnaby.

Not today.
We need a back-up point guard. We’re not drafting the next Blazers next PG of the future.
release Johnson?
not
I’d release Babbit before AJ (guaranteed money and all)
There are 2 roster spots open, one more decent big man will be enough, there’s no need to start “eating our own young”
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
ask the Knicks
they seem to interested in Jeffries, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen Jared play
my point was there’s no need to waive Luke or AJ to add a backup big man. I expect Cho to sign someone soon to replace Joel/Sean/Dante. Hopefully, we’ll all be surprised by how well he plays, regardless of how much/often that may be
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
I guess the humorous intent was not clear
Sorry to pick on a player you liked. I am really surprised the Blazers made a commitment to winning this season rather than giving up due to all the injuries.
My point was if they’re willing to go this far to win this season, I’m anxious that they had something planned about the gaping hole in the middle. And I don’t know enough about NBA talent to be sure my first choice in big men would work on the court—thus, the need for two or more. But obviously “throwing money” at players isn’t how things get done, and buying headgear, I’m sure you see, is apropos of nothing.

Johnson is OK, I'm expecting him to be a career backup, he's not a personal favorite but he was a decent 2nd round choice
I’m not surprised that Paul made a commitment to winning when the team hit the break 7 games over .500. The coach/players made that decision relatively easy for him (if not for Rich…)
I’m anxious that they had something planned about the gaping hole in the middle. And I don’t know enough about NBA talent to be sure my first choice in big men would work on the court—thus, the need for two or more
I understand the anxiety, but by telling the scouts/GM you want 2 big men, you’re showing a lack of confidence that they can choose the right one on the first try, eh? The Blazers don’t have PT for 2 more big men (unless there’s more injuries…) so a decent backup will do. They need a Przybilla, not another Marks. Two Seans would not equal one Joel, if you get my drift.
Now, I was not a fan of Chris Johnson because of his slight build. Now that the team has added Wallace I suppose they could acquire another beanpole, but I’d prefer they find someone with a little more meat on his bones. Shot-blocking isn’t as important to me as position defense and blocking out. Camby, LMA, Batum and Wallace can all block shots, but that’s not all they do—obviously. Find someone who can set picks, defend the post and rebound the ball in traffic and I’ll be satisfied for the short-term—even if he’s a brick-layer with no offensive skills other than a dunk. Buck and Bayno can work with that raw material, but what they can’t do is make a 210-pound stick man into a banger, no matter how much footwork they teach him.

yeah Sam would want Miami and the Heat would want Sam
I was just wondering if the Pacers were hurting for cash they might release Jeff Foster, but I think they’re all in for the playoffs, and (to my knowledge) Foster hasn’t asked to be let go, like TJ Ford
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
I hadn't even thought of the Heat, but that makes sense for Dalembert.
I really hope we don’t give TJ Ford multiple years.
Portland’s pursuit of Indiana PG TJ Ford is real, according to a source close to the guard. He’d still like to leverage additional years.
by Nick Van Excellent on Feb 26, 2011 11:26 PM PST up reply actions
I hope not, too
if Cho didn’t want to give Dampier multiple years last December, then they should tell TJ’s agent it’s one and done…then if Ford plays well, Portland can change their minds in April like they did when they extended Camby, last spring
I can’t blame the players for seeking guaranteed money extended through the lockout, even if they aren’t getting paid until it’s over…at least with that assurance they’ve got a team to go to, instead of being caught in FA limbo and maybe being passed over for some rookie, or low-balled after the new CBA
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
This ^
Don’t give Ford a long term deal up front.
I might be okay with offering TJ Ford multiple years...
…if the extra years were non-guaranteed until he met specific performance metrics. (XX games/minutes played, XX points scored, XX All-Star games appeared in, etc.)
Ford’s problem has always been injuries. Not what we really need to take on, but if his contract is structured so that we are not tied into a long-term commitment if he does get hurt, then I could live with it.

Now there...
…is someone who might actually make a difference for us.
Juwan knows our system, and while not exactly a dominant force, he’s one guy that might actually see playoff minutes (a few, anyway), and not just practice minutes if we signed him.
Go get Juwan Howard!
Portland Trail Blazers, Future World Champions 2011-2021.
The story kinda implies that he *won't* get bought out, however.
It does seem a little odd that Miami, in the position they’re in, would want to get rid of a solid big-man like Howard, anyway.

He might prefer going to Boston or Chicago or Orlando or (shudder) Los Angeles.

I second this.
Howard is smart, experienced, knows our team, and can play the 4 and 5. Even given his age and likely limited mobility (I have not seen him play this year), he appeals to me more than a young player who presumably would have some learning curve.

Howard would be an awesome pickup.
Then pick up some sort of DLeague guy who is at least 6’10, 250 who can rebound and foul and we’ll be all set.

Could someone please explain to me
how a team like Dallas over the cap can sign Corey Brewer to a Multi-Year deal?
I would guess
that they haven’t used all or some of their Mid Level Exception(MLE). I believe the MLE is around 5.5-6.0 million a year this year. The MLE can be split up between any number of players. So, assuming they are giving Brewer 2.5 Million a year, they would have been only able to spend up to 3.0-3.5 million of the MLE last summer/earlier this year.
The other possibility is that they used the bi-annual exception(BAE). It is around 1.7 million per year for up to 2 years.
