Blazers Trade Joel Przybilla, Dante Cunningham, Sean Marks, 2 First Round Picks For Bobcats F Gerald Wallace
According to multiple reports, and after days of rumors, the Portland Trail Blazers have traded center Joel Przybilla, forward Dante Cunningham and two first round picks to the Charlotte Bobcats for forward Gerald Wallace. The Blazers will hold a press conference at 4 PM PST this afternoon.
Update (2:00PM): Nicolas Batum tweets that reserve center and cult hero Sean Marks is also leaving. Ken Berger of CBSSports.com confirms that Marks was traded to the Bobcats.
I've posted some quick trade analysis over at CBSSports.com.
Wallace, a versatile and defensive-minded 28 year old that can play both the three and the four, is averaging 15.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.0 blocks in 39 minutes per game. Wallace has been a member of the Bobcats since the 2004-2005 season. He attended the University of Alabama.
Wallace is on the books for $10.5 million for this year and for next year, and has a player option for the same amount in 2012-2013, according to StoryTellersContracts.com. The Blazers take on roughly $747,648 in this deal, going that much further into luxury tax territory.
Przybilla's contract expires this season and he has mentioned the possibility of a buyout and/or retirement. Cunningham is on the second and final year of his second round draft pick rookie deal. Both will be free agents this summer.
The three-for-one trade brings Portland's roster to 13 players, leaving two spots open. Earlier in the day, there was talk about signing point guard T. J. Ford if he is bought out by the Indiana Pacers.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Portland Trail Blazers have acquired Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace.
Charlotte's Gerald Wallace has been traded to Portland, a league source tells Y!
Portland will send Joel Przybilla and a 2nd round draft pick to Charlotte for Gerald Wallace, source says.
Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reports...
It's Joel Przybilla and two first-round picks to Charlotte for Wallace, source says. Player is Cunningham to Bobcats.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports now reports...
Ken Berger has picks right going to Charlotte for Wallace. I can't read a text message: Two future first-rounders for Wallace.
Przybilla for Wallace straight up doesn't match salary-wise so there will need to be another player(s) involved.
David Aldridge of NBA.com notes this fact as well...
Bobcats will get another player in addition to Przybilla and picks for Wallace... Player is [Dante] Cunningham to Bobcats.
Ken Berger of CBSSports.com confirms this as the package...
Source confirms Bobcats also get Dante Cunningham in Wallace deal, plus Przybilla and two firsts.
Jason Quick of The Oregonian also reports...
The Trail Blazers have traded for Charlotte small forward Gerald Wallace, giving up center Joel Przybilla, forward Dante Cunnigham and two future first-round picks. The move, finalized right before Thursday’s noon deadline, was first reported by Yahoo! Sports and CBS Sports.
Dante Cunningham tweets...
PEACE PDX THANK U ALL!!!!!!
LaMarcus Aldridge tweets...
Lost some good teammates!
T. J. Ford tweets to Blazers center Marcus Camby...
glad u survived deadline. Lol u know I wouldn't mine being with my TX boyz... Lmao
Footnotes: Berger also reports that Blazers center Marcus Camby will stay in Portland and that a rumored deal sending Houston Rockets point guard Aaron Brooks to the Blazers is not true. Brooks has been traded to the Suns for Goran Dragic.

Let's face it, Cunningham is filler
I appreciate his work ethic, but he’s completely 100% replaceable as a player. Wallace makes him redundant anyway, and we keep every single part of our core. Shedding Pryz muight actually help our defense too, but Camby has to come back healthy
If Pryz gets bought our
I’d resign him for the playoff stretch cause we’re thin at C. But Pryz might be better off getting more rest fro the knee anyway

Sad to see him leave, but GWallace is worth it.

If this is true then Cho is a genius. He makes the team better now, and the future for essentially an expiring contract.
We played soft vs Lakers. One guy in the paint most the end of the game
i promise wallace wont be waiting to shoot a 3
Plus this gives us flexabilaty. Now we could concievable trade oden, miller, batum/wallace for a guy like chris paul.

He can come in for Wallace or LA. And then Brandon can come in for Matthews or Andre. We have a lot of flexability.
Nic and Wallace could start at the 3-4 (or 4-3) with LMA at the de facto 5
depending on the matchup, and Camby’s status

LMA has been very effective at the 5 this season, and the Blazers have thrived with him at that spot.
long live the jd.
It's superstition
We’ll still call him a PF, to satisfy his idiosyncrasies. Duncan, who has a very similar game, has had the same issue. Pops just plays him at the 5 next to a banger 4 or another long stretch 4 and calls that guy a center. We have basically been using Camby in that role.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Andre will say he's the 5
Miller is a team-first guy, and he’s indestructable
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
he still plays 4, just does it alongside smallball.
He’s not a center stylistiically and doesn’t alter his game as such.
50/50
there aren’t a lot of centers to go around
LMA isn’t a defensive center, but Wallace and Batum can help make up for that
LMA is an offensive center, at least since December
Camby will probably start once he’s healthy, and Nic will come off the bench. Batum-Roy-Rudy are 3 guys who could be starters and they play well together—nice problem to have
the real sticking point is what happens if Brandon thinks he should be starting? But I’m not going too far down that road today…let’s see how Wallace fits in, first

No, it can't. MLE has nothing to do with trades at all.
And our trade exception could only be used for one player coming in, and none going out, so the trade exception cannot be used here either.
I believe it does work
because Joel has a trade kicker in his contract. The teams have to be within 125% of each other, without the trade kicker, they are only a few hundred thousand apart from it working, with the kicker it works. I have not confirmed this, but I believe this to be so.

A little bittersweet with Thunder making improvements, too
But I’ll take it!
I don't think they improved.
The word is that the trade had more to do with money. Perkins isn’t that much better than Krstic, and Nate Robinson isn’t nearly enough to make up for the loss of Jeff Green. The Celtics were the clear winners in this trade.
I call it pretty even
Celts needed a backup offensive 3 with Marquis now maybe done for the year, and evidently were willing to bet on Perk’s knee injuries to do it. Thunder needed a defensive 5 to protect the paint.

Source confirms Bobcats also get Dante Cunningham in Wallace deal, plus Przybilla and two firsts.
If that's the deal, that does sound like a lot to lose.

It's not at all.
Joel is on his last leg as a player, Wallace is pretty much Dante’s absolute ceiling and Blazers are known to purchase picks like they’re quarter machine toys.
Maybe its a 4-way with...
like this with Houstons 1st pick going to Phoenix and a Portland 1st pick to Phoenix also if the Brooks rumors have any legs
berger
Portland had nothing to do with Brooks trade. He goes straight to Phoenix for a first, source says
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!

I cannot say enough about how HUGE of a steal this is. HUGE HUGE. I will miss Dante. He’s been steadily improving, but we basically gave up NOTHING to get a near All-Star caliber starting SF. Wow. I am stunned that MJ did this w/o Portland including Batum.
Ready? Imagine this fast break starting lineup NOW: Miller, Matthews, Wallace, Aldridge, Camby. LOL! Hell. Yes.
"You know, when you are in the game, you hear 20,000 people behind you, you don't feel anything."

Wallace was an allstar right?
if I recall, he was in the hunt for DPOY one or two years
Starting lineup is almost the best in the WC
It’s 4 deep and maybe 5 with Camby. Wallace rebounds like a 4, and is athletic and strong defensively. No core given up. Great pickup I beleive it puts us in contention in the Western Conference assuming Camby is healthy and Roy is a good sixth man
Yeah I think so we still have 15 guys or so because of this
So Marks will still back up Camby

The beautiful thing about Wallace is he can be great next to a "just a big body" player like Marks.
His rebounding is great.
This is a wonderful trade if we have a healthy center remaining.

I knew about his defense and open court offense.
I didn’t realize he’s such a good rebounder.
I’m even more excited now!

Dear Jeebus,
ODEN ODEN ODEN ODEN ODEN ODEN!
(next year, obviously)
Crash, LMA and Camby could probably
more than hold their own against any front court in the league. We do have depth issues to address though
Camby and LMA 6'11 each
Wallace plays bigger than 6’8.
Yep
and LMA has been dominating the best front courts all by himself. He’s had issues with maybe 3 but Crash, LMA and Camby could probably do some serious damage.
They all run, hustle and rebound + both Crash and LMA with score and dunk at will if we still have Dre.
Agreed
Wallace is a great fit. Just pray Camby comes back healthy because he’s integral to us being in contention. And I abosolutely believe we’re right there in the Top 3 or 4 in the WC with Camby and Roy healthy
Camby will be healthy. He will make sure of it.
I know people are anxious for his return and some are calling him out for not playing yet….but the guy is smart and knows better than to come back before FULLY HEALED.

Funny enough
Aldridge has always had more trouble with the small pesky guys than the big strong tough guys.
I have always said this, height is one of the most overrated factors for a ball player.
How many times do we have to hear “great for his size” before people realize a couple inches doesn’t make or break a guy playing a position in the front court.
Lower body strength, instinct and good hands are much more important.
It makes a big difference once the games really matter.
But I’m just going by who wins championships is all. Winners never trot out 6’7 banger 4s when it counts.
dinasour type of guys choir boys
I'm not saying it doesn't matter, it certainly does.
It’s when you find a combination of that big size plus the things I listed that you end up winning a championship.
But any way you look at it, Gerald Wallace is better than Dante and Joel combined in pretty much any category, despite being shorter.
You make a good point...
The only exception that comes to mind is Ben Wallace in 2004 (he, of course, though, had Rasheed to help him out).

I hate to see Cunningham go, but Wallace is an impact player — a better # 2 option on offense than Matthews, and a first-tier defender. Great rebounder for his size.

Nice consolation for missing out on Harris. I like G-Force lots too since he can rebound and defend the perimeter
We can go small, or big
Yeah, he can guard multiple positions and do everything except shoot really well.
His head injuries have always been the scary thing about him, but for an expiring pick and draft picks we can easily replace?
This is a no brainer and an awesome deal.

OKC pulled two great deals too though
They get rid of Green and the temptation to give him too much money, and have their bigs with Nazr and Perkins. Thoughts?
I just saw that
I’m pretty out of it in regards to most trades that are happening, but that’s a great deal for OKC. I don’t get why Boston did it— Jeff Green is pretty sucky, and Perkins is a legit solid big who is one of the best big man defenders right now. I ain’t watched him since he came back from his injury of last season, though.
Based on my memory of him, that’s a steal for OKC. And Nazr as a backup is totally fine, he’s good when he wants to be.

something must be wrong with Perkins?
otherwise I don’t get this at all? What is Boston doing? I’m not so sure this is a home run for okc.

nice trade, though its not a steal since Crash has not played very well this year.
long live the jd.
Betta' than Joel and Dante, I bet
And two picks we can replace.
Here’s hoping playing for something revitalizes him.
Getting him and TJ Ford is kinda funny, since both guys might be one injury away from retirement.

I'm looking forward to seeing Rudy, LMA, Crash, Andre, and Nico on the floor together
I don’t know if or how much it will happen, but man, that’s a team that can get up and down the floor.
This trade makes LMA and Rudy better players, IMO.
Frees Rudy and LMA to go for steals on slower players
Almost unfair, if you think about it.
by TheThinWhiteDuke on Feb 24, 2011 12:57 PM PST up reply actions
And the best part of all
LMA doesn’t have to do it all himself inside anymore. He’s got much better rebounding help over Cunningham, and somebody who can actually score in the paint. Getting Wallace means that LMA can probably rest another 3 or 4 minutes a night when Camby come sback
I love Joel and I love Dante
But, this will better the team right now. I’m glad they didn’t have to trade miller. My grade was a B
ALLLL Rudy Then!!!!!
have to think
that Pryz will be pissed, unless they told him they will resign him if he gets bought out.

He’s probably just past his peak now. He’ll be his most effective for another 2 or 3 years. This is a win now move, and with a couple of breaks, we just may do that

truth
I was a McMillan skeptic but this is the reality. I don’t know if he’s a championship coach or not, you never know til you get there – but he’s become very skilled at moving pieces around to make it work. And he’s broken some out of his stylistic cliches this year, bowing to the reality of the team he has at his disposal.
This move is right in his wheelhouse. Wallace is an effort guy with skills on D who has seen a dropoff on a bad team – it’s plausible to think we’ll see a bump in production here, and even if not, he’s a good fit at a reasonable price.
Also, I think it is informed by what has happened in Denver and Utah. If those two teams were still looking to contend the next few years, maybe the Blazers go one way. But the general assumption leaguewide now is that each will at least fall off, if not actually crater. This makes it feasible for the Blazers to make a push over the next few years without rebuilding.
Basically, Roy just needs to learn to play within his new limitations. IF he can, the Blazers are well positioned for the period when LA and SA finally hit the wall.
Brooks would have been a great pickup but you can’t move both Camby and Pryz so if you have to pick 1, Wallace was the right choice.

Nate’s got a good roster again, assuming Roy and Camby can stay healthy. McMillian has said it enough times but fans aren’t listening
NBA coaches are graded on their post season records
Nate has won one playoff series, in 2004-2005. Then he left Seattle and came to Portland
If he doesn’t win at least one playoff series this April, he’ll be moving on again. Not because I think so, because his option wasn’t picked up last summer and…that’s how the NBA works (except in Utah…) and especially when your owner is Paul Allen
we’re rooting for you Nate—make us proud! But if the Blazers fall short in the first round again…don’t let the screen door hit ya

Not down on it at all. I just like to point out that Crash hasn’t been playing his best ball this year— hasn’t been close to allstar level. Still a good player though. Still a solid trade— just not a swindling or a trade that makes us contenders. I like to keep things in perspective.

Isn't that the whole point....to buy low?
Just one year has passed since last year’s rumors and Charlotte’s demands dropped significantly
I like the trade, but ‘buying low’ suggests there’s good reason to believe he’ll return to his former level, and I’m just not sure that’s the case. We gave up a fair price though, and we brought in a good player. Solid move. Just not one that makes us contenders. That’s all I’m saying.

If we’re going to have a real shot, it’s dependent on everybody staying healthy AND Roy providing solid contribution.
"...it was like he brought his own personal cross-wind to the arena." - Dave
Yes that's right
I do believe we have a good shot PROVIDED Roy can be 80% of the old Roy in fewer minutes. Not only does Wallace help a lot up front, it makes our bench way better because it’s another man deeper now with Batum coming off it.

We lack size/bulk inside, still

"...it was like he brought his own personal cross-wind to the arena." - Dave
Yes, kinda
But we also have quickness and athletism in the 3 and 4 most teams don’t have now with Wallace and Batum. Camby coming back healthy is key now to provide needed size and shot blocking
This won't cause any minute problems either!
Joel/Dante are taking up about 40 minutes a night as it is.. give most of those to Wallace

Nobody is talking about it, but if Charlotte buys out Joel for the remainder of the year, we could pick him up after 30 days right? As long as he’s willing to come back? We’ll have a vacant roster spot with Dante leaving. Then, if TJ Ford is a possibility, we can cut Marks to free up a spot.
this is if Joel wants to play for less money...he may just want to retire?
I know he has said he doesn’t want to risk re-injury. But he may just want to stay and play here.
That would be great. He looked better last night.

Now if we can just get the ball to go in the freaking hoop…

How will Wallace feel about coming off the bench and playing backup PF?
I seem to recall he didn’t like playing PF. Batum plays much better as a starter.

This was a very solid move
We still have some decisions to make going forward and I think a lot of our future depends on Oden’s health.
Hot sauce in my bag.
So, just to be clear
Roughly speaking, OKC traded J.Green for Perk, and PHX traded Dragic for Brooks?
The OKC one scares me…Not so much Perk in the middle (which is kinda scary), as more minutes and a starting role for Ibaka.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Excellent trade for OKC, Perkins is a beast...
Kinda surprising… I guess Shaq and the other ONeal are doing better than anticipated…
Wonder how Green will like coming off the bench?
I wonder how he'll like being a contributor on a title team
assuming they can handle Manu and Timmy
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
I hadn't even thought about that, but great point
Perk/Ibaka front line is legit. With KD/WB/Harden scoring all over the place they didn’t really need Green anyway. I’m really more surprised Boston did this
\\oo///
Yeah, if I'm Boston, I'd be really reluctant to give up Perk to a contender
I don’t think this move will get OKC past the Spurs and L*kers this year, but it’s a possibility if one of those teams suffers a major injury
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
All 3 teams hopes weigh heavily on shaky knees
Bynum/Kobe, Perk (just hurt his other knee), and Duncan/McDyess/Blair all have questionable knee health, at best. Anything is possible!!!!!
\oo///
C's are in the same boat with KG, Shaq, and Jerm
Shaq may have injured something other than his knees, but you get my point.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
They got a decent package I think
It’s not equal, but 2 first rounds and Dante is not that bad either
by Trail Ducker on Feb 24, 2011 1:26 PM PST up reply actions
Even though Wallace hasn't been as good as normal
At age 28, and not knowing any current injuries that would limit him, I do think it isn’t unreasonable to think the change of situation will mean a lot. He’s been rumoured to being traded for 2 years now.
Joel and Dante for Crash just seems like such a killer deal, since Joel was just a warm body this year. I am nervous about Crash lasting, but I don’t mind the risk.
#20
Whereabouts should they be?
For the Bobcats they are fine, but for us… since we have been able to get mid-late 1st round picks easily… it’s not losing much for us.
#20
Hornets pick will be around #20 or so. Our 2013 pick could be pretty much anywhere. I wonder if there’s any protection on it.
long live the jd.
It definitely is good for the Bobcats to get some picks like that
It will help ‘em. And they’re easy for us to give up, since we should be able to replace them if the draft is seen as weak as expected. Win/win!

This frees up a roster spot.

do note, please the QUANTITY of shots near the hoop,
obviously his primary scoring zone. The 3 threat is nice if they pack the inside.
In Portland, I assume that the location of his shots will depend on the position he's playing at the time.
As it is, I feel as if he’d be most effective at the 4 shooting high-post jumpers and crashing inside. It’s nice to see he can hit the corner 3, though, as that’s improtant in this scheme.

Quick math...
If my math is right, he has made almost as many layups/dunks (339/594) as the rest of his shots, 349 attempts. That is awesome. Layups galore.. Alley oops, fast break dunks, putbacks… nice…
And he hits at 48% from foul line extended, and 42% right corner. So you start him on the left, pick and pop up top, if nothing there, pick with the corner guy in the right… Drive the lane for an alley oop, and repeat if necessary..
Great trade…

I'm kind of iffy on this deal.
How is the team gonna afford a PG and a big man…and be able to sign Batum to an extension in the future? Trades, trades and more trades?
This really ties Portland down to a lot of payroll for a position they didn’t really need. Two first rounders for a borderline all-star might be a bit much. This is very Whitsitt-esque.
I reckon they'll be pretty active around the draft.
Andre’s option doesn’t get picked up for next season (due to the lockout), and they can trade him anytime before June 29.
They don't have to worry about resigning Joel or Dante.
Camby will retire, Miller will probably get traded at some point. I assume Camby’s money goes to Oden and Miller’s money goes to some other PG.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the team is banking on Roy medically retiring eventually
It’s probably worth it to Allen to pay through the nose for a year or two to build a contender (which will bring in more revenue anyway).

re: our 2013 pick
It’s quite possible that the 2013 pick could be a lotto pick, actually. Dre and Camby will be gone unless we re-sign them. Roy could be completely done by then. Rudy’s deal will have ended, and he might not re-up. And Crash can opt out the year before.

We will have LMA, Wes, Batum, and I hope, Oden. That’s not a lottery bound team, even if you add average players in drafts and deals until 2013…
I agree
win-win. We get what we want for pieces that don’t derail us immediately, or much in the future (we still have hopes on Oden, I think). Charlotte needs to shed salary to rebuild, weren’t going anywhere with GW, and the picks could really help them
\\oo///
win-win is right
not every trade is a zero sum game. both teams got what they wanted. no one got taken. We have different goals – CHA is clearing room and reloading to rebuild. Done. We’re working with a 3-5 year window that should peak in 2-4 and Wallace fits well in to that, while neither a 20s pick in this bad draft nor any non lottery pick in 2013 is relevant to that window.
this is about strategy more than tactics, and strategy is based on your high level goals.

I was just thinking about this.
Why does MJ make this deal? I really don’t understand what he’s trying to do.
How does 2 1st round picks on a playoff team help?
Does 2 Luke Babbits for one Gerald Wallace help the Bobcats?
Its utterly ridiculous to point to a sucky rookie as a reason late first round picks aren’t valuable. Sure you aren’t guaranteed to get a good player, but there’s a very real chance you will.
long live the jd.
and paul allen can sometimes simply BUY a pick in the 20s
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
I’m sure someone’s done the analysis on that, I’m too lazy to look it up at the moment. Still, for a team that’s going nowhere, getting first round picks makes sense.
I like the deal for Portland, but its not like Jordan got nothing in return. 2 first rounders, cap relief with Joel’s deal and Dante is not terrible return for a guy playing at significantly below his past level.
long live the jd.
for a team that wants to continue going nowhere, yes, late first round picks on guaranteed contracts make sense
why not keep paying a guy peanuts for three years, since he will probably not be in the league the 4th year.
dinasour type of guys choir boys
San Antonio has done a great job keeping itself afloat with late first rounders (and less)
In addition to some great second round and undrafted guys (e.g., Blair, Ginobli, etc.), in the 2000’s San Antonio made the following quality pick-ups in the late first round: Hill, Splitter, Udrih, Barbosa (traded), Salmons, and Parker.
And of course, Batum and Rudy were late first-round selections as well.
"...it was like he brought his own personal cross-wind to the arena." - Dave
One team is not a trend.
SA is always the exception. Especially considering the play they get out of undrafted free agents.
Look at Neal this year, Bowen, Mason jr…

To anyone who watched the LA game last night, it’s obvious that Aldridge needs someone who can spread the floor for him.

And hearing that Camby still has pain, makes me a little worried. We can’t expect LA to play center much. Let’s hope they plan to get a center with the open spots.

Playing with centers just gets you more injured centers.

Sean Marks to Charlotte is significant. Bobcats brought in 5 guys and dealt 2 if I’m reading it right, which means cutting 3 players.
I bet they keep Cunningham, cut Marks, and buyout Przybilla. Hopefully we can resign Przy for the veteran minimum.
They've got to cut three of their own players first to clear roster space for the two trades.

Doubt we'd win a 7 game series
but there’s a great chance the Lakers get Crashed if we play them. GW is a pain in the neck for the Lakers…as is LMA now.
It seems to me that this is a move for the future and present.
It makes us more competative now, because we have the much needed scorer and defender to play the 3/4, and I assume that Cho and co. made this deal with the assumption that Oden is coming back eventually. So next year, when it’s all said and done, we have a lineup of Dre, Matthews, Crash, LMA, Oden.
Can you say contenders?
you're probably right.
depending on match up, we’ll be lucky to get past the 1st round.

Is the plan now to play LMA 48 minutes a game?
I realize Joel isn’t the Joel of old and that Dante isn’t a true big. While this trade might make is better, it also makes us much, much smaller. Even if Wallace can play the PF for stretches Camby or LMA will probably need to be on the court at all times. Seems like a huge gamble in the short term.
Perhaps Cho has a big on his radar he is going to sign? Charlotte will probably release Joel, but I would be surprised if PDX can re-sign him. I hope we aren’t gambling with LMA’s future health by overplaying him this year.

How about this…trust the GM. He probably knows what he’s doing even better than we do.
He's 6'7" 220 and is a true 3.
I do trust Cho, but Camby and LMA will need some relief. Nic can come off the bench and Wallace can slide to the 4, but that won’t work all the time

Green is fairly inefficient. Not a bad pick (they only missed out on Noah, but that was hard to see with the 5 guys ahead and behind him worse). But not what they need going forward. He and Durant really duplicate in position. Ibaka, Nazr, Perkins is a better rotation. And they still have cap space or the MLE (if it exists) to go after Nene in the summer or re-sign one of their new guys.

Playing for the bobcats (doubtful)
Boughtout and back to PDX (doubtful)
Retires (most likely)
I hope I can get a bunch of championships, like 15. " - Greg Oden
that's what Canzano is saying, too
he said he talked to Joel last night, Przy told him he’s been playing on one leg
his last NBA block may have been against K*be, not a bad way to go out if that’s how it all comes down
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
I doubt the guy who listed Milwaukee as his 2nd choice behind PDX
on where he wanted to play next year stands much of chance of going to Beantown
Well, that guy was Przybilla himself
"I definitely wouldn’t mind playing for the Bucks," Przybilla said. "My first preference would be to stay in Portland; I have to see what their plans are for me.
"But my second choice would be Milwaukee. I wouldn’t mind playing there at all."
Wasn't it Pryz's wife who wanted to be in Portland?
I assume she’ll pull for him to come back here. He won’t play in CHA, so he just has to chill out at home for 30 days, then tack on another $500K on top of this year’s salary. Not a bad deal.
by Pooh Richardson on Feb 24, 2011 3:21 PM PST up reply actions
Does Miami have space or ability to sign him?
I can’t see Pryz anywhere but here, but the call of a contender can be tough to hang up on.
And if he is cut
Is it only Portland that has to wait 30 days, or does everyone?
I feel Pryz would do something REALLY bad if he was a Celtic
He really hates Garnett

Anyone else not that excited this trade?
I don’t think it’s bad at all talent wise. But our roster is already stack at the 3 position. We lose both our backup centers. Camby is the only “healthy” center left on the roster. We create more logjams and an unbalanced roster.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
I'm very excited
1-Miller 2-Wes 3-Batum 4-Wallace 5-LMA that line up is a match up nightmare
I'm excited in the sense
that we get another Wesley (high energy, go getter) type player. I also like how he’s built like a freakin’ football player. I do think you’re right though, we are waaay shorthanded at center position. I just hope those two extra roster spots can be filled by at least one decent big man here very shortly.

I think Joel will be back in 30 days
until then grab Johnson for another 10 day contract then get the next best d-league big for 2 consecutive 10 day contracts.
Its not about the position
Its about the talent. It makes the team more talented overall.

Charlotte has to cut like 3 players to make their trades work, so does that happen today? also, when is the tj ford cut supposed to happen?
Find it odd
to listen to the 95.5 and they still don’t have the trade right. Ugh. Twitter really is a lifesaver for breaking news.

I graded a "B"
Really fine trade to save face. I didn’t vote for an “A” because:
1. injury history of “Crash”
2. Thinking the two 1st rounders makes the price sound steep (which years? conditional?). If one of these is the conditional New Orleans one, I’m in.
3. We missed out on several better players that we needed more, possibly including Aaron Brooks
Caveat to number 3: with all the drama issues re: Carmelo and Deron Williams, I would hesitate on having them enter my locker room.

Also I would have given an “A” if
4. Augustin was included in the deal
But that may not be necessary if the other Texas guy, Ford, comes over.

This basically is forcing the lineup to change, in a good way
Aldridge will play the 5 – C
Batum will play the 3/4 -SF/PF
Wallace will play the 4/3 – PF/SF
Wesley will play the 2 -SG
Andre will play the 1 -
The Bench is looking weak for the time being
C- Camby
PF – ? Luke Babbitt Haha
SF – Rudy
SG – Roy
PG – Mills/Armon
With the two roster spots it looks like a big man is an extreme need now.
Roy looked pretty decent last night.
I don’t think our bench will be that bad.
"Nicolas! You're the strongest boy in the world!"
he looked decent?
I disagree – he stood around most of the time

by thomasikehara on Feb 24, 2011 3:51 PM PST up reply actions
You could fix the bench by starting Camby at center.
Then stagger players in so Wallace slides to the 4 when Aldridge plays the 5 and bring Batum in off the bench to play the 3. That’s enough defense and good spacing for Aldridge to work in the post.
You don’t need a 10 man rotation.
by Nick Van Excellent on Feb 24, 2011 3:19 PM PST up reply actions
camby will start when he comes back
so then somebody will have to come off the bench (batum) and then our bench will look pretty dang sharp
you have brandon roy
on your bench. camby.. and experienced Vet. and rudy fernandez scoring machine. and our bench is weak? idk.. Roy .. 6th man of the second half of the season?
wow
the fact that you sound excited about our all-star and franchise player being a good 6th man shows where we are
by rip_city_swagger on Feb 24, 2011 3:27 PM PST up reply actions
When you get the chance to add basically an all star that cheaply you do it 10 times out of 10
use the roster spots on some bigs for added depth. I don’t know if this trade is better than the Camby trade, but it’s certainly a good one.
Wallace and Batum can rotate playing the 4 in small ball lineups. I’m kinda curious what will happen when Camby returns. Can the team really start Crash at the 3 due to his lack of an outside shot?
#52
I think this year he's hitting the corner three about the same as Batum.
by Nick Van Excellent on Feb 24, 2011 3:24 PM PST up reply actions
yeah, Nic is having a down year shooting the 3 overall
Wallace is at 33% and Batum is at 34%. So it wouldn’t be a big deal to use Wallace at the 3 when Camby is back. I really hope we’re a little more inventive then just sticking him in the corner though.
#52
Some Bobcat fans said we would be stupid to play him at the 4, but I still think it's going to happen.

That lineup looks solid in both defense and offense
Wallace can score and any lineup including Aldridge is BEASTLY offensively.
If Batum can become a point forward then this is deadly for maybe 5 minutes
until the opponent puts in a quick PG and Batum gets routinely torched.

Especially considering what Cho was able to get for him, today
of course, Andre Miller and Wesley Matthews were pretty good FA signings, as well. This franchise has done well recently in that area, after striking out on Hassell, etc

Not gonna lie
Gerald Wallace for the last 3 years has been my favorite player outside of the Blazers.. SOOO stoked.. He always leads the league in Blocks Against.. WHICH in my opinion is awesome.. That means he goes to the hole….
I gotta believe that Wallace is stoked about joining the Blazers at this point.
And that is going to energize his play. Combined with, well, what this whole team is doing lately, and Camby back, really exciting.
Certainly looking forward to seeing the Blazers new look in action.
The fact Pryz & T.J. Ford will probably join us within a week.....priceless

Cho made it seem like they wanted him.
I hope I can get a bunch of championships, like 15. " - Greg Oden
I know I thought this before.. and think I posted it, but... I think I may now believe it...
It was mostly in jest… then.. But… Cho said they were going to use Wesley as the guide for how we collect players… Remember? Well, they certainly delivered in GW…
But I also wonder if they really are starting to believe that this particular team doesn’t need to collect first round draft picks. One reason could be that we seemingly can always find an owner who will trade their pick for a few mil… which is fine by PA… Another one, (previously said in jest, now maybe not so much) (The Wesley Factor) what if they plan to just draft the most snubbed, hungry, defense first guy who wasn’t drafted!
Thinking about that got me wondering: maybe Born and the rest of the scouts have uncovered SO MANY New Wesleys in college, that are NOT on the national radar for the draft, that they figure they just don’t need the picks as much anymore!
Random unrelated thoughts
1) Cho’s voice sounded like it was gone, like he had done something like,I dunno, use it non-stop 18+ hours a day for a few weeks?
2) We got the most talented player. (And it’s not even close) History has shown, in a star driven lead, that’s a winning strategy.
3) We got better defensively and offensively…
- I like the defensive unit we can put on the floor: Camby, G-Dub, Wes, Batum, and AJ.
- I like the fast break unit we can put out there: LMA, G-Dub, (Wes, Batum, Rudy, pick 2), and Dre…
- I like our starting lineup: LMA, G-Dub, Batum, Wes, and Dre…
- Or: Camby, LMA, G-Dub, Wes, Dre…. Lotsa options…
- This could be a good half court unit: Camby (up high), LMA (post), G-Dub (slash), Rudy (round picks), Roy doing his thing up top…
4) Our playoff rotation 8 to me is looking pretty set, barring… change… at:
- Bigs: LMA, G-Dub, Camby
- Wings: Wes, Batum, Rudy
- PGs: Miller, Roy
With our soon to be acquired big man, Patty, and AJ in spot situational duty…
