Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan announces his resignation during a Thursday press conference.
Here's my full wrap post. Also, All-Star point guard Deron Williams denies he wanted Sloan out in Utah.
I've professed my admiration for Coach Sloan for years, dating back to when Dave was still screening my posts! Example 1. Example 2. Example 3. Here's to a legend.

so its just his resignation?
should I hold any hope? ;)
Fan of Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Broncos, and Portland Timbers
no
even if Sloan was inclined to coach elsewhere, Utah still owns his rights

and I doubt that Rick would choose to work for Paul again, if the job was offered
although I think that Adelman still has family in this area and he might move back up here, when he’s in-between jobs

I'm not so sure about Sloan
He doesn’t seem like a great fit for the Blazer’s personnel. He may be even more rigid than Nate as well. Sounds like Sloan is leaving Utah because the players are revolting. D-will is not the only guy that has problems with Sloan. I remember Kirilenko not being all that happy with his style either. Sloan has always been a my way or the highway kind of guy. Not sure how well that’s going to go over with the team. They’ve been in the league long enough that they probably don’t need another “Sarge” type coach. Adelman would probably be a better choice.
sloan also has been able to keep the jazz relevant for years and has been tremendous at squeezing the most out of his players and getting them to play the right way.
plus you’d never hear the words “scrap” or “just missed shots” again.

Yeah, Jerry Sloan and Phil D. Johnson were probably the most system-oriented of all the coaches ...
in the NBA. As it is, the Blazers have got two solid fits at the wing, Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews, when it comes to running a crapload of old-fashioned UCLA and flex cuts that involve off-ball movement.
Yet, LaMarcus Aldridge wouldn’t do well in it. Aldridge, who’s a poor post passer and isn’t a strong pick-and-roll screener or finisher, would be ill-suited for the UCLA high-post offense — such as Al Jefferson had been for the Utah Jazz this season — so yeah.
Andre Miller, however, would theoreticaly be a good fit at point guard, but he’s not long for Portland. Oh, and last but not least, Brandon Roy would be an absolutely terrible fit.
All of that aside, though, there are some flaws within this offensive scheme (e.g., a lack of emphasis on three-point shooting) and with Sloan’s coaching philosophy on defense (e.g., instructing his players to hack frequently). So, all things considered, let’s be clear that he was far from perfect in Utah, but there’s no way he deserved to go out like this. Even worse, the Utah Jazz will soon be in a similar position to the Nuggets/Hornets. It’s then that people will truly know how important Sloan was there.

I think Derron Williams was going to go one way or the other...
Do you think the new CBA will address the star’s choosing where to play at all? Any chance for a bit more equity?
It seems to me the NBA could use a few less teams….what do you think about this?
Hmm, I'm not sure whether or not there'll be a franchise tag put in place like the NFL has got.
I’m also not sure how I feel about a franchise tag, since a part of me feels that it’s too restrictive.
And yeah, I’m down with contraction. I wouldn’t make it anything too excessive, though, because I doubt dropping back to 24 teams is realistic. Still, cutting back by 2 teams down to 28 — with the likely options being New Orleans and one of either Memphis or Sacramento — couldn’t hurt any at this point.

yeah...he wouldn't be resigning if he had the fire left in him to coach

That's my assumption, too.

Just a thought...
that older (esp white) coaches may be slowly losing their place in today’s NBA. I’m not saying for better or worse, but some of the recent strugglers (O’Brien, Brown, Westphal, etc) come to mind while guys like Doc Rivers, Monty Williams, Scott Brooks, our own Nate…are really getting through to their teams. Sure, Phil and Pop are still coaching, but Phil is retiring and I don’t think Pop will see many years beyond the Duncan era, heck they may retire together.
Anyway, my point is, I don’t think Sloan would come in and necessarily be a better fit for this team, despite his pedigree.

Sloan was a great coach,
but Frank Layden was much more entertaining.
Salt Lake City is still in Utah. Utah’s state gun is the Browning M1911 semiautomatic pistol. Brigham Young, had 55 wives, which, I think, should inspire awe.
Portland though, has a strong tradition of attempted theft, especially when it comes to contractually available Jazz assets, something I refer to as squatter’s rights, you hear me, Deron?
When I read this I thought "ho hum..."
Jerry Sloan signs another contract with the Jazz.
It took me a while to figure out that ‘resign’ did not actually mean that he ‘signed again’.
Wow. Big difference. I guess he just couldn’t take all of our toxic offers. It probably sucks to see Wes Matthews doing so well.

I just remembered that Larry Miller was on 'Courtside'
recently, and his responses to questions about Nate getting a contract extension did not look positive at all. I give Nate about 20% chance of coming back next year.
He sounds tired and exhausted as well
He sounds like an old man. An elderly man.

maybe he is just tired from lack of sleep...leading up to this decision.
The guy is healthy and will probably live to be 100 and live well while doing so.
6 AM workouts, everyday
reminds me of Jack Ramsay
I wonder what Jerry will do with himself when the fishing/hunting starts to get stale? Maybe he’ll coach his grandkid’s games?

Hire Sloan
…let’s make the blazers the dirtiest team in the league.
I wonder if Sloan and Nate could work together...
(I’m kidding, of course)

Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
My gawd, man!!!!
What is Phase 2: ??? ?

I'm sad for Utah fans...the guy is an icon.
He seems to have gotten the most out of whoever played on that team.
He’s made his decision and I am happy for him. It probably wasn’t an easy one for him to make.
I am also thinking….hmmm…maybe this improves the Blazers chances…maybe this will show “stars” that they are not all THAT. It’s the devil on my left shoulder….it comes out occasionally.
I just had a vivid thought....
can you see Sloan in the stands at a game as a fan and screaming at the Refs full blast?
The Faith don't panic, the Faith freaks out, burns out small farms and villages in the name of the Faith.
of all the things that happen in a season
one thing that you don’t expect is Sloan leaving the Jazz, voluntarily or involuntarily. I didn’t see this coming at all.

Best coach in the history of the NBA never to win a title? Such a great man too. No B.S. with that guy. Always knew where you stood with him, etc. As Charles said on TNT tonight, the NBA isn’t as good as it was yesterday as a result.

It's probably between him, George Karl, and Rick Adelman.

What? Not Don Nelson?

I'd take both of the Van Gundy bro's before Don Nelson, too.
That also goes for a retired coach who made a couple of NBA Finals appearances like Gene Shue.

I was just jerking your chain
I thought that Nellie had a lot going for him back in the ’80s when he was with the Bucks
but he could never get past the Celtics or the Sixers in the post season, then Nelson spent the second half of his coaching career trying to prove that a quickness mismatch was more important than size (small ball) That strategy tends to fade in May, if the team even gets that far…

Doug Moe was another one of these innovative coaches
more style than substance, tinkering with the game, the mile-high altitude had a lot to do with Denver’s regular season success

as best coaches in the history of the NBA?
Really?
How about Phil Jackson, Popovich, Doc Rivers, Stan Van Gundy? Were you kidding?
Nah, best coaches to never win a NBA title.

that rules out Larry Brown and Lenny Wilkens, as well

Now, if we're talking about the best coaches ever in NBA history, I'd go with Phil Jackson, Red ...
Auerbach, and Pat Riley.

This is incredibly sad.
Sloan, the legendary, tenured coach that he is, deserved a chance to go out on his own terms. Something tells me quitting half way through the season isn’t his ideal way to go out. That’s very disappointing to me, and I say that as an avid Jazz hater.
Much respect, Mr. Sloan. Thank you for standing for good basketball. I hope you enjoy your vacation.

So which current NBA head coach has been with his team longest, now?
I’m guessing Popovich
I think the Jazz are going to sink now that Sloan’s gone, and their fans may become very accustomed to holding lottery parties
Kind of like how the Kings dropped off the table, a few years ago

Yes, Popovich
And then Doc Rivers, I believe.

To echo some others here, this is just really sad.
To lose such an NBA mainstay like Coach Sloan only separates us even more from the “old-school.”
This is a bummer.
Sloan’s been coaching the Jazz for as long as I’ve been watching ball (since 1991). I will definitely miss the Blazers battling his teams. It sounds like he is retiring.

Entire press conference
just brought a tear to my eye. An end to an era.
Goodbye Mr. Sloan, you deserve better.
